I made a vertical keyboard having mouse function.
« on: Fri, 19 August 2016, 07:19:01 »
Hi
I made a vertical keyboard using arduino leonardo and mouse.
Motive of this invention is my wrist ache.
My thought is vertical stuff make my wrist more good.
So I try to make vertical keyboard and mouse.

The keyboard I made have 84 keys. It consist of 6 analog pins and 14 digital pins.

This picture means a key array.

I modeling my keyboard in 3D and draw circuit in my model.
My major in university is civil engineering. So I rarely know about electronics.

This is what I made in middle process.

This is finished goods.
I forgot take picture in mouse assemble.

It is pretty comfortable. Because it is not need to move your hand for using mouse.
And vertical keyboard make your position more comfortable. For example, you can typing in adjective position.
I want to hear your opinion about my keyboard.
And sorry for my awful English.

Can you please make a video of you using it? I can't get my head around how that's even remotely comfortable.

Positive marks for using tape to keep it together :))

My major in university is civil engineering.

That's why it's built like a brick house/amphitheater. (Biomedical Engineer here, former Civil Engineering student too.)

Looks really interesting, I'd like to see it in action.

Really fun that is looks like theater.
And I didn't know that.

That's really cool!

I don't think I could ever get used to it, but I love that you had this idea and went through with it.

It looks great! For me, I would need one where the two halves of the board were at my shoulder's width. Still, really good job!

I completely missed the fact that if had keys on the outside!

Honestly, this is one of the most creative things I've seen keyboard wise. I didn't even think it made sense. Thank you very much for the keyboard.

How do you think you can improve it, perhaps if you do a 2nd version?

I'll make 2nd version of this keyboard.
New version have three improvement.
1st is mouse on&off switch at left side.
When I use word processor(ms), and typing, mouse cursor is moving.
It because mouse and keyboard is one body.
So I try to make mouse on&off switch.

2nd is rotating side keyboard about 30 degree.
Accurate vertical is a little comfortable.
But if I bend side wall, it would be more comfortable.

3rd is using 3d print.
Origin version use cherry key and pbt keycap. And structures are consist of acrylic.
These are little expensive. And hard to make what I want shape.

Maybe about one or two month later, I will show you.

Thanks for your interest.

I can see that allowing for a more natural wrist angle, but wouldn't it make it harder to move the keyboard?
What would you do about the keys on the inside then?

Real nice and innovative project while I have use neither this seems far more comfortable than the keymouse especially the fact that you control the cursor with both hands.

I'll test what is more easy to move keyboard.
But I suppose that the angle of side keyboard is not important.
Purpose of the angle is typing.
It is just my guess.

Inside keyboard array is like this.(You can see attached excel picture)

Left
ESC   Ctrl
Space   Alt
Shift   Win
Tab
Caps lock

Right
Back space
Enter   Ctrl
Shift   '
Alt   Pause break
Print screen

This array make easy to typing some hotkey.
For example Ctrl+C or V, Ctrl or Alt + F4, Win + D or E
And easy to click Alt, Ctrl and Shift at the same time.

I think adapt to use my keyboard needs time about 1 or 2 hours.
And control the cursor with both hands is pretty easy.
If you test my keyboard, you can feel how easy it is.
And I'm hard to compare what is more comfortable between my keyboard and keymouse.
I already know the keymouse. But I have no using keymouse experience .

Is accurate answer?
If I answer wrong, please let me know.

It would be great to see your next iteration. The current one appears to have some hard to reach keys and the keys in the center requires you to move your hands out of the home position that are not really that friendly with touch typing.

This is really interesting. It's gripped in a similar orientation to holding a sandwich with the entire thing simultaneously being a giant, movable mouse. Love the concept!

Very Nice, Thanks for sharing.  I've never used a vertical keyboard but I've often wondered what it's like to have the weight of your hand resting on the right side of your hand, just proximal of the pinky.  Does that impair movement of the pinky at all?

Also, seems like it would need a very heavy or else non-slip base to prevent your fingers constantly pushing it laterally out of alignment.

Do you feel like you have to intentionally hold your thumbs away from the inside buttons, or is the whole thing thin enough that your thumbs can remain at rest.  Maybe you can just have really heavy switches on the inside and your thumbs could literally rest on them.

I've got an ergodox that I've yet to add any tenting too, but I keep thinking that's the next big improvement towards further ergonomics

I love this.

Subscribing so I can see the next version.

I can imagine typing on it, sure, but the mods are what scare me the most about it.

Anyways, very cool project, and thanks for sharing the video!!!

Answer 1) Move of keyboard is free from pinky.
Answer 2) Typing make movement of keyboard. But it is not considerable. The problem of movement is cursor. When I make word, cursor is not disappear, so I will make mouse on off button in next version.
Coming soon^^

Answer 3) Both hands's thumbs are placed on key cap (under esc button). And thumbs can push most of key(alt, shift, est, enter, space, backspace etc...)

Do I answer right?
If I answer wrong, please tell me.

Hey, by mods I meant the keys that are not used for typing out letters, such as
shift Control Alt windows tab enter

. But you actually answered that question in your response. So thanks

It reminds me of someone playing an accordion. Nevertheless, it is ingenious. How did you think of this idea?
