So are Boobiecaps dead?
« on: Mon, 19 October 2015, 15:44:44 »
I haven't seen an update nor heard anything further from Mandolin regarding them, and he's since locked the topic. I invested money upfront on something not guaranteed, so I am OK with the possibility of getting nothing but am simply looking for informational closure.
I'm assuming the project is dead and no one is getting their prototypes or anything?

Ran out of crystals.

Didn't people pay in advance for those caps?

Yep, that's why I asked for (and received) a full refund for all my mandolin caps. I can hit him up on skype and see what's up, I know I've talked to him since he last logged in.

The dumber the reason the more it must be done

Imagine the walk of shame when your crystals fail to sync up and become illuminate

This thread is going wonderful places. Thank you.

Looks like I need to start searching craigslist for laughs. I guess I'm way behind the times.

If she found the beads in the son's room, do you assume he was using them on girls or himself?

I've had a pinky finger up there once just to try, and boy it was horrible.

No, didn't you read the Advert?  It was a girls bracelet, and it was a tacky one at that.

Doing keycaps for me is a privilege, a pleasure and a fun hobby. However, I'm a full time student and have been really busy lately with university. I haven't completely stopped working on my pending projects, just couldn't stretch the time to put some hours in it.

I plan on keep developing the boobiecaps even as full sets in the future, so that's out of the question, as well as other pending keycaps I've got to ship to some people.

If time is not a constrain you'll receive your caps. As of today, I can make them in resin according to the original post, but that would be taking the easy way out. I posted this as an experimental idea to make squishy caps and that hopefully will survive the most demanding typer and that's what I'm aiming for.

Aside from the preorders, I invested a handful of resources to solve a problem, not just make another resin keycap, the real cloud of boobs,  that I'm still developing. For your consideration, sourcing chemicals from Chile is an order of magnitude harder than in the US, and have to order overseas as the hobbyist market for makers/casting is almost nonexistent (2 providers that answer my emails, with scarce material list). It can be done, I do it all the time, but  it takes more determination, money and time.

Status:
- Patterns (sculptures ready and clean, in wax)
- PU foam tested discarded as it compresses linearly(not spongy enough) and tend to collapse overtime. Latex would be better, but it degrades throughout the years.
- PU rubber works, tried, discarded, but it degrades over the years, as happens in the batman rubber suits for hot toys kind of figures.
- I've tried dental silicone, isn't flexible enough and breaks.
- Imported silane adhesive to adhere quarz fillers into the silicone. Got problems in the customs, but got it mixed in the origin and shipped.
- It's gotta be platinum silicone, but the batches I could get a hold of locally were probably bad, as every cast broke under minimum bend.
- I don't have another place to order platinum silicone in the whole country, that's the main ingredient I'm lacking.  Will order it online, but run out of money. I'm not asking anyone for it. As I'm a full time student and have had been using my spare time with my expertise to earn some money doing custom hot toys heads (http://i.imgur.com/KaVDyjQ.jpg). I'm still in the midst of doing a run of it, aside from other things, so I could order more materils and keep working on keycaps.
- I'll reopen the original post to showcase the final casts when I've positive developments.

Posibilites I've yet to try:
- Another silicone.
- Boobiecap top silicone, with an adhesive like 3M VHB tape and a hard resin switch interface.
- Just hard Resin.

pic attached of a bunch of discarded and approved molds, patterns, etc.

TL;DR If time is not a constrain you'll receive your keycaps, although you could ask for a full refund without trouble. You'll get them anyways.

Oh nice, thank you for the in-depth update.
Personally I'm in no rush and get time x money constraints, and quality trumps speedy production for sure. Just wanted to know if it was still a go or that's another dream I'd put to pasture.

Here's some more inspiration!

necro'd

Not sure how many people invested in this project, but has anyone gotten anything out of this other than a smaller bank account?

Pardon the late reply;

If contacting him on GeekHack is a trouble, he's quite active on his DeviantaART page here. Hopefully that doesn't count as me throwing personal info out here.

As much as I don't want a boob on my keyboard, these would be something quite special. His old Chihuahua keycaps were so beautiful  :(
