I like your record shelves Hoffman.

Too lazy to take some terrible phone pictures that wouldn't be worth posting anyway...
My sound set up revolves around my PC, since I mostly listen to digital files these days. I've got an audioengine N22 amp, orb speakers and a JBL/Harman Studio sub. But I do also vinyl and I have a Stanton T60 with a Behringer preamp with USB out.

Next on my list of electronic upgrades is a nice set of speakers and then a vinyl player down the road. Right now I have basic logitech speakers. I have already started my vinyl collection with some limited edition pieces that I didn't want to miss out on, even though I can't play them :P

hi... if i post all my stuff I'm going to be here awhile... I love  me some vintage audio equipment.

my pride and joy is a Sony TA-N77ES / TA-E77ESD/TA-SDP-777ES/730ES/700ES stack in near mint condition i got at a G/W 1/2 sale $75 for all of it (oh yeah and a N110 amp also in the deal)

Speakers are JBL L1's I got at an estate sale a few years ago... excellent speakers:

Paid around 190 for re-shell, and $50 per side for additional faceplate. I'm not good in describing but it does sounds better as its deeper into my ear canel. You can check out at null-audio.com

I have several stereo systems. My favorite one is the system hooked up to this machine.  It has a pair of Bose 601 series II speakers and a pair of Venturi V52 bookshelf speakers.  Currently running a Pioneer A335 integrated amplifier (The Yamaha A1000 is broken, it took a serious fall....) with an ADC SoundShaper 20 Equalizer.  A Technics SLQ-200 semi-automatic Quartz-Field generator Direct Drive Turntable with an Audio-Technica PM9000 Dual-Magnet cartridge and an elliptical stylus.  (The Linear-Contact stylus tears up vinyl, so I went with an elliptical shortly thereafter.)
As far as listening to this system, it is bliss.  The imaging is spectacular, and there is no way to put it into words.  You have to hear it for yourself.

I also have a pair of Minimus-77's I resurrected from the dead when I discovered the woofers on them disintegrated and I had to find replacements for it.  I found a pair of replacement woofers for them that actually made them sound better than they were when they were new.  They are being used in an AV setup.

I have another project going on, which led me on a tangent to build a new speaker system which I really didn't plan.  When it's finished, I will be more than happy to talk about that.

There are a couple other systems I can go on about, but that's for another day.

Nice.  :)  This will be a stereo setup, or part of something larger?  Either way, looking good.

It's kind of an experiment in a speaker build.  I hope everything works the way I planned.  I'll know when it's done.
Edit: I have a small snag, some parts I need are coming in next week.  I hate waiting!
What is suprising, is if I really wanted to, I could probably finish the build without the parts, just to see how it sounds.  I'll be patient and do it right, even though I am anxious as heck wanting to hear them!

Well, I am having some serious problems with the design.  It's not working exactly as I intended and I have to work with the low/mid pass.  It's going to be on the back-burner for a while now.  Awww.

Oooo...good stuff!

I don't have pics but love my AKG 240Ms that I've had from when they were still made in Austria.  Mine are still 600ohm. 

I also just a week ago turned on our original family Panasonic stereo/turntable/8-track with Thrusters speakers.  What shocks me is that they were bought right around when I was born, so they're as old as me and they still work!  Some of knobs were a bit crunchy but a couple of turns back and forth and the whole thing came back to life.  :thumb:

IT is ALIVE!  Holy Smoke!  They KICK HARD!  I just had to low-pass (80Hz) to the subwoofers and go full range pass through to the Alpine 6960's.  (No high-pass, totally unnecessary!)

I thought I would have to do everything over.  Duh, if it ain't broke, don't break it.

Heck yeah!  I spend most of my time in that room, especially now that I've had to consolidate my computer room and video game room into my listening room after the move.  :O

Well, if you could, you may experience 3 different aspects of how sound can be experienced.  Arena, Hall, and narrow field.  Each has it's own effect on the senses.  I like image the best of them all.  Nothing like hearing music being reproduced as it was intended by the artist.

Having a great equalizer is a must.  You have to use them properly and adjust the sound to the environment your speakers are in.  If you prefer, you can bend the sound to your liking, however, you discover after time that maybe you are "drowning" out essential content.

This is important.

Take a song like "Year of the Cat" by Al Stewart.  Listen to it however you like.  Then, as an experiment, turn everything FLAT.

Try it.

Then, depending on your environment, adjust your bass and treble frequency up and down until you reach that spot where the song goes full dimension.  (You'll know it when you hear it.)

That song was engineered brilliantly.  There are others, but it's a good example.

I always aim for a "flat" curve in terms of produced sound.  So similar to what snowdog mentioned, I'll adjust the EQ but only to compensate for the environment.  I may also mess with things if I "know" the mix is poor and I want to fix it.  :P  (though almost universally, my attitude is to "listen to it as the artist intended")

I've also had great experiences learning from some experienced sound engineers (ran sound for a 5-12 piece band at a church - see the last pic in the OP :D ), which taught me a lot.  I don't claim to be an expert, but I do think it has helped me in my quest for better sound.

It drives me batty to hear the crap headphones with excess equalization that people are buying for $200.  I mean, if people want to throw away their money I guess its their prerogative, but at least give me some.

I'm going to have to try this at some point.  I'll have to find the CD somewhere as I'm sure youtube and whatnot have terrible compression that will destroy that full dimension. :(

Actually it's pretty good.  Especially when the lights are off and I'm playing a movie.  It's like being at a theater.  All I need are the drinks, popcorn and pizza!  It's awesome!

I had to measure Rowdy.  The TV is only 4 1/2" higher than it was when it was sitting on the subs.  There is no neck strain or anything at all when I watch it.  As far as the pizza is concerned, it's not delivery, it's DiGiorno!  (Sometimes delivery, admittedly)  Or some other frozen pizza like Tombstone or Totino's.  Whatever is there.  It's all good.

Edit:

I had to show you it may be an optical illusion by the angle of the picture.  The TV is actually about 1/2" below the door frame.

Wow, looks a lot higher even though it's not.

You need to try the www.screaminsicilian.com brand of frozen pizzas.  I used to only find them in MKE, but it looks like they've started distributing everywhere.  It's some real fresh goodness!

This was when I was living in my first apartment with my fiancee. The Polks I actually got for free from work at the time. They were going to be recycled, so I ended up taking them home, and the sounded wonderful! I still have these, however they currently sit and are not in use.

I picked up the B&W CM9's from work for a hell of a deal (1/2 off), and grabbed the Klipsch sub off Newegg on a Black Friday deal. I ended up selling the sub, as I also have a Mirage OmniS-10 sub that works really well.

At this time I had moved back in with my parents for a little while to save up some money. Found these pair of Vienna Acoustic Mozart Grand's at work for $300/pr (retail for ~$3000), as they were a bit beat up, and both tweeters were shot. I replaced both tweeters (~$150), so I managed to have an amazing set of speakers for a hell of a deal. I ended up selling these for a decent profit, however I still regret selling these, as they are still some of my favorite speakers I've heard.

I have the other systems too.  The "Gaming/TV" setup is what I use when I am watching my stuff and she's watching hers.  Of course I could play around with the game consoles with my son or watch him play something too.

This thing has an RCA selector switch on the left side, which allows to switch between the Wii, PS/2, PS/3 and XBox 360.  On the right side is an RCA to HDMI 1080P upconverter.  Extremely helpful little gadget that allows me to utilize everything through the stereo too.
The Minimus-77's are on either side of the JVC RX-315 Receiver.  Just fine for the setup.
Below are the Wii, Cable Box, PS/2, Wireless Bridge, PS/3 and XBox 360.
The big-ol black block thing is just a Proficient S8 powered subwoofer. 
To the right is just a rack to hold the game cd's and dvd's for the consoles. 
It's practical and saves space.
Don't panic about the UFO's on the TV.

Edit: I should clean up the wiring here too.  Ugh!

The most useless equipment I had was the old ADC SA-1 Spectrum Analyzer I had.  There was an input but no output.  It worked, but not very well.  It didn't really do much even when I had signal going into it too.  I've seen spectrum analyzers that were really cool, that actually gave you real-time results.  Unfortunately, the ADC one was no good at all.

I would call that an upgrade!  However, how are the condition of those speakers?  I had a big pair of MGA speakers like that, but the crossovers were shot on them, and the foam surrounds were going bad too.  It's not too hard to replace the drivers, just be sure to get the correct ones if you do.

Based on suggestions in my other thread (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=77044.0), I've ordered an amp, I have a cable (or two), and it's just a case of seeing whether they actually work.

FWIW the amp cost more than the speakers :))

Audio is really dangerous for me. After working in so many world class studios, I've been utterly spoiled when it comes to hearing music sound as good as it possibly can. I mean, I've heard some of the original Beatles 2 inch tapes in a 5+ million dollar room. For years I was really, really concerned with getting the best possible sound from my home stereo, but more than anything it was just never enough. I almost found myself disliking using my system with each new addition, because it really was just sub par to what I was used to. So downsizing with the intention of A)Being better with money and B)To get a system that's cost gives me more bang than buck has actually made me enjoy sitting around and listening to music more at home.

TL;DR - Now that I've stopped trying to compete with systems I have no business competing with has made home audio fun again. When I wanna blow my pants off, I'll go into a studio in the off hours, smoke a..pipe...and dissolve into the music.  :p

OMG that had to be awesome to listen to!  I can only imagine how much more the fidelity is and how much more you can actually hear.  A good friend of mine got me hooked on good sound when I was working with him and now nothing sounds 'right' anymore.  I can still get into the music and enjoy it based on the content, but every time my wife puts music her iphone on I want to cringe--that's a line I have to draw on listening to tinny, horrible quality.

So when's the GH studio meet getaway happening?  ;D

A slight improvement.  Used a pair of AIWA speakers for fill.  Very nice now.  Great for A/V experience.

I picked up the B&W CM9's from work for a hell of a deal (1/2 off), and grabbed the Klipsch sub off Newegg on a Black Friday deal. I ended up selling the sub, as I also have a Mirage OmniS-10 sub that works really well.

At this time I had moved back in with my parents for a little while to save up some money. Found these pair of Vienna Acoustic Mozart Grand's at work for $300/pr (retail for ~$3000), as they were a bit beat up, and both tweeters were shot. I replaced both tweeters (~$150), so I managed to have an amazing set of speakers for a hell of a deal. I ended up selling these for a decent profit, however I still regret selling these, as they are still some of my favorite speakers I've heard.

This was my setup after selling the Vienna Acoustics, moving my PC out of my bedroom, and picked up a Music Hall mmf2.2-le turntable. I also ended up getting a Music Hall Acrylic Platter, Denon DL-110 Cartridge, Phono Box S, Speed Box S, and the Alchemist Record Clamp. It sings quite beautifully!

This was at my last apartment with my fiancee. I ended up picking up an Adcom GFA-555II Amp for the speakers, as the amp section on my Pioneer Elite receiver was shot. I've been using the Pioneer Elite as a pre-amp, and it's been working fantastically with the Amp.

Celestion Kingston speakers.

I sold the record deck a while ago rather than put it into storage and risk damage, but it was a wonderful beast, better than any CD player I ever heard. The speakers are some weird composite that was supposed to be as sonically inert as possible, they stopped making it because it was very fragile.

Heres a few extremely potato pics of the last time it was all together. One day I may still return to the joys of extreme hi fi.

For my home theater I use some Sony STR-KG700s I got from a Best Buy store closing in 2007 for only $80 because they were new but in a damaged box they had in the back of the store. They still sound great!

Alright need your help / recommendations.

About to finally buy my record player. I decided to go with this: https://store.uturnaudio.com/products/orbit-builder

So my question.

How do I get this working with my current setup. I know I am probably going to possibly need to buy a new receiver.

Currently I have 2 JBL self powered monitors, a self powered sub, A schiit stack but not the ubers, so I have a switch to cycle between my speakers and headphones.

My switch only supports 2 at a time. I am thinking I can probably get the record player with its own preamp and then see if I can find a 3 cycle switch.

What do you guys think is the best option?

Edit: I also socred a sweet sony receiver over the weekend for super cheap. Ill upload pictures when I get home. I was thinking of maybe integrating that into the setup.

What's your current setup re: low-pass filter?  Since you're already using a switch it might be easiest to just pop the turntable in as another input (with a preamp) and just treat it as another input however you currently have it setup.  I don't have the most experience with active speaker setups though so don't take my word as gospel.  ;) 

The other sensible option is to hook up the receiver but then you'll have issues using that with the active speakers you have, and would overall (IMHO) be a more involved transition.  But again, would be best to get some input from the others to have a proper discussion.

Quite a nice vinyl collection you've got there!  Can't post pic as I'm not in the country where my audio gear is located.  I'm still using physical discs too, but they're CDs.  And then I'm not really using them: I'm ripping them and storing them, and listening from the ripped digital files.  Still rocking my same setup since years: floorstanding loudspeakers (DALI Zensor 7), Cambridge Audio amp, Cambridge Audio DAC.
