Title: [FS] Rubber Mats Pads for Keyboard - EPDM dense rubber industrial material
Post by: fohat.digs on Mon, 09 June 2014, 09:47:50
I procured some heavy-duty EPDM roofing material to cut for keyboard mats.

This is the thick, 60-mil industrial variety, much thicker than similar materials such as pond liner or such that you get at Home Depot. You can see in the side photo that it is thicker than a dime or a cent, about as thick as a nickel, and slightly thinner than a quarter. This material is vaguely similar to a tire inner tube, but much thicker and stiffer.

These mats are cut individually so please specify a size in inches or centimeters, and I will custom cut it for you.
Please don't say something like "the size of a HHKB2" because I may not have the item you are describing.

Consider whether you want it the exact size of your keyboard, slightly undersize (so that it does not show), or slightly oversize (so that a narrow border of black shows around the edge) by adding or subtracting 1/4" or 1 cm all around.

$8    Extra-Small  - up to 12" x 4.5" (30 cm x 12 cm) for HHKB, Poker, JD40, custom very small keyboards
$10   Small            - up to 14.5" x 6" (37 cm x 15 cm) for TKL "tenkeyless" -type keyboards
$12  Medium        - up to 17" x 7.5" (45 cm x 20 cm) for average conventional keyboards
$13  Large           - up to 19.5" x 9" (50 cm x 23 cm) for larger standard keyboards such as IBM Model M and Dell AT101 keyboards
$15  Extra-Large  - up to 23" x 9.5" (60 cm x 25 cm) for oversized keyboards such as 122-key terminal boards

Send me a private message and pay via Paypal "merchandise" including postage via US Post Office domestic only.
I can ship international for an additional $10-$12 because they are surprisingly heavy. I will combine shipping for multiples.

While supplies last, I can cut larger pieces for higher prices.

This is an update of my earlier thread  http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=54414.0 (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=54414.0)

Actual comments from previous customers:

It's one of those things, I put mine down on my desk at work and was like....man I'm really liking this and it just kind of became the standard thing I used.

It doesn't actually look that bad, in fact it looks pretty sweet. It does a great job of keeping the board and place and dampening the sound.

Got it.
Love it!
Gives my keyboard a much more satisfying sound and stable feel.

Doesn't do much sound dampening for me since I'm using a soft MX brown, but the mat is a nice material and will protect the bottom of my keyboard from my messed up desk surface. It also doesn't slide around much, so it's pretty good for that too.

Overall this is exactly what I was looking for. This is perfect for my HHKB on my glass desk (and cheap too).

Just got in my mat and it is a perfect fit for the board and the palm rest. More importantly, the mat is performing exactly how I need it to on the glass surface that keyboard and palm rest reside on. Also it provides an ever so slight difference in the feel of the board, in a good way by being less jarring and dampens the vibration. Not that I had any complaints in that department beforehand.

Also got my mat today and it's awesome! Really strong and a perfect fit! Can strongly recommend this!

Just wanted to post and say thanks for the mat. Works great with the HHKB!

I got the mat, fits nicely. It certainly keeps the M firmly planted to the desk and it does lower the noise slightly even with my untrained ears.

Also, those rubber mats are great.  Nothing slides around on those things.

Fohat, reading these comments is a puzzlement to me.

Are so many people really suffering from a sliding keyboard problem?

I have almost no keyboard sliding problem on any surface, regardless of what keyboard I use or what surface I use.

About the only thing I can identify as a genuine difference, is that I use a fat gel wrist rest maybe 3/4" thick.

On the rare occasions when I use a keyboard without any wrist rest (eg in a public library), it is possible that the keyboard moves.

I think the high wrist rest allows me to type downwards from 'above' because my hands are elevated. If I had no wrist rest, I would find myself exerting some horizontal force when typing since my hands are no longer above the keyboard. That may lead to keyboard sliding.

As for sound dampening, I have had ad hoc solutions that worked pretty well from styrofoam or foam. I was never that crazy about sound dampening enough, but I think it's not really necessary to use these mats. I'm not saying all these to threadcrap, but because I think you (fohat) are quite interested in modding. I think it is worth considering alternative solutions that look more elegant and office-like than EPDM.

but I think it's not really necessary to use these mats.

Then, by all means, do not waste your money on buying one!

If I may throw in my personal thoughts, since I have one.

I have a ****ty ikea desk. It's ****ty in that over the years, it has developed cracks and bumps and some of the top lining material has worn off in places. My keyboards, both my Race S and Filco MJ TKL, have a tendency to wobble while sitting on this ****ty ikea desk. The EPDM material I purchased from you sits nicely on my ****ty ikea desk and provides a stable working surface for my keyboard. I no longer have to angle my keyboard oddly to get a non-wobbly keyboard. And before anyone tells me to "twist" my keyboard so it doesn't wobble, I've tried that. It doesn't work on this ****ty ikea desk.

True to form, the keyboard doesn't slide on the mat and the mat doesn't slide on the desk either. I didn't really have any issues with sliding, but I can confirm that it won't slide anyways with the mat. Also the flat black material helps my shinier keyboard stand out.

Fohat, I'm just musing aloud about the different possibilities. I know you like modding and trying out different materials, so it's not intended to thread crap.

By discussing pro- and anti- reasons for using EPDM we can work out conditions under which it is most useful.

In any case the next poster JinDesu had a response that was exactly what I was hoping to stimulate. Makes sense. EPDM mat has the weight to 'even out' crappy desk surfaces.

In contrast, I have a good desk and also often the need to move my keyboard to one side to do other things.

I have some and absolutely will be using it to secure my metal bottom plate to the PCB (for voltage reasons). I will fold the end over taco style so the slidy aluminium plate won't, y'know, slide.

The mat works. I use the rear legs with my M so it can slide a little. Its firmly planted now. It does cut the noise down enough that it can often appease the complainers. I'm happy with it.

The new pictures look nice.

It is amazingly hard to get them to look realistic. These are just plain black rubber rectangles, but the lighting always makes them look ugly, uneven, and scuffed. There are very light parallel lines, probably residual marks from rollers at the factory, but in general they are totally plain and nondescript.

Glass is deceivingly slick, especially if the surface (of the glass) has a little dust on it. I enjoy a little slide from time to time but a glass surface requires some brakes, for me at least. :o

I'm curious about the possibilities of using this internally as well. Are there opportunities to reduce ping on my Filco, for instance?

Get yourself some cheap rubber-foam shelf liner from a hardware store.  It most certainly helps dampen spring resonance by filling the empty space under the PCB:

It will be easier to cut and layer to fill the tray of a Filco keyboard--those have a lot of ridges and parts sticking out.

I still have enough material for a couple of large ones or a few small ones.

The waffled shelf liner is also a great product and very cheap, I have used it extensively. That is what I use for internal padding in cases, along with black felt. I discovered that filling cavities is best done by cutting long strips and rolling them into cylinders, rather than just wadding it up and stuffing it in.

My mats are very different - dense, heavy, and almost non-compressible.

I've had the mat under my keyboard for 3 weeks now and holding the keyboard firmly in place is what I am liking most. Doesn't seem like much, but when I use a board without it now I notice it.

For now, there is only have enough material for a couple more wide (~8") mats for full-size keyboards, but enough narrower (~4") pieces for several more for smaller boards.

I will make the price $8.50 shipped for small ones 4.5" (11 cm) or less in the short dimension ($16 international).

My family and I use them, and I have never gotten any type of complaints from anybody who bought them.

Buy up!

I just got a 10' long thin irregular strip between 4" and 5" wide.

I can cut several more for smaller compact boards as long as you want something no more than 4"-5" (10cm-12cm) in the short dimension. PM me with you exact dimensions.

These will go for $8.50 shipped domestic US and $18 shipped international, and I will combine shipping for multiples.

PS - I also have 1 or 2 larger pieces left for full-sized boards.

Using one of these mats with my HHKB right now. It fixes the issue of the keyboard sliding around my desk, which was really my only problem with the HHKB. As a sidenote, the color of the mat is pretty much flat black, definitely better looking than in the pictures IMO. I'd definitely recommend it   :)

Sorry, I have not been checking this thread.

I have a few more pieces that are big enough for a standard board, and several narrower ones for compact sizes.

PM me and tell me the exact measurements that you want.

If you want it hidden, assume about 1/8" or 5mm short on each side.

Bump, because these really are nice and I have not gotten much interest lately.

They are particularly good for the smallest keyboards, and I will go $8.50 shipped if it is something on the order of 4.5"x11.5"

(12cm x 30cm for our anti-Imperialist friends, but add another $8.50 if outside of the US!)

You don't exactly have to sell your car to pay for it.

I am down to my last couple of pieces to cut full-size mats, but I have enough smaller pieces (ie <4" or <11cm on the short dimension) for a few more.

When my company gets another contract that uses the material, I should get enough scraps to cut a dozen or more, but I have no way to know when that will be.

Got me some rubber in the mail! :D

fohat.digs kindly included an extra strip of extra thick variety, which I used to line the inside of my 60% case.  Initially, I was going to use the normal mat inside instead of a shelf liner I used to use, but this way I can use the normal mat under the keyboard.  Overall, the keyboard feels quieter and the sound of typing is deeper, softer (linear switches with thick Cherry keycaps).  I consider it a enhancement.  Pics!

Bump. We have a new project using this material, and I got some nice surplus cut-offs, so I am back in business for a while.
These are listed on ebay but I will sell them here direct for a bit less.
Prices include domestic US shipping. International add $10 for XS, S, and M and add $12 for L and XL. This stuff is heavy.

$ 8  - Extra-Small - up to 12" x 4.5" (30 cm x 12 cm) for HHKB, Poker, JD40, custom very small keyboards
$10  - Small - up to 14.5" x 6" (37 cm x 15 cm) for TKL "tenkeyless" gaming-type keyboards
$12 - Medium - up to 17" x 7.5" (45 cm x 20 cm) for average conventional keyboards
$13 - Large - up to 19.5" x 9" (50 cm x 23 cm) for larger standard keyboards such as IBM Model M and Dell AT101 keyboards
$15 - Extra-Large - up to 23" x 9.5" (60 cm x 25 cm) for oversized keyboards such as 122-key terminal boards

* PLEASE * specify the exact dimensions that you want me to cut.

For now, I might be able to sell larger pieces at additional cost.

Thanks

How difficult is it to cut this material? It might be a bit overkill, but I'm considering replacing the foam on my beamspring and would be interested in exploring something with a bit more of a rubbery feeling than the neoprene foam I used for my Model F. Would leather hole punches have a hard time with this kind of dense mat? I can't imagine it would be tougher to cut than leather? Or am I just wrong in imagining what this material feels like?
Title: Re: [FS] Rubber Mats Pads for Keyboard - EPDM dense rubber industrial material
Post by: fohat.digs on Mon, 23 May 2016, 20:16:39
It is very tough. I have never tried a leather punch on it but I suspect that it will be more difficult than leather because it is very resilient.

This material is created to be a commercial/industrial roofing material with a 30-year warranty, and is quite strong.

I have never built a beam spring and don't know how they go together, but this may be too much.

Edit - OK I tested it and you can punch holes in it, with a little extra effort.

I used a "moderately" sharp 5/8" leather punch. With my normal (soft) cedar block underneath, it did not cut well. Switching to a considerably harder Southern Yellow pine block, laid flat on a concrete floor, I could make the punch. But it took a good solid whack with my big 24 oz hammer.

It would be a terrible mouse pad.

Imagine the material of an inner tube, only quite a bit thicker and stiffer. My ebay description used to say "non-slip" but I got a complaint from one buyer who said that it did not help slippage, so I removed that term. Personally, I do consider it to have good traction and that is why I like it.

I use a piece on my work table sometimes and it is very tough. Incidental drops of solder probably wouldn't hurt it, but you couldn't actually lay a hot iron down on it without melting (and smelling terrible, I would guess).

Hello,

I just bought a few mats from fohat.digs a few days earlier.

Attached are pictures of the mat that I have on hand at the moment.  It's not especially slippery or grippy, which is fine for me.

If you are extremely heavy on your keyboard movements, you might actually move the mat slightly sometimes.  I have never had any such troubles, but I could move my keyboard if I give a little extra push.

At first, the mat looks pretty ugly, but after a while, its grown on me, and I don't really see it much.

If you want some cheap mats made to size, I'd highly recommend most people to buy these.

Looks simple and functional, which is all you'd want!

Thanks, guys. This is an industrial roofing material so it is not intended to be pretty, but on the other hand is extremely tough since it is made to have a 25-year warranty while exposed to the elements!

It is not soft or grippy like sorbothane, and would be terrible under a mouse, but it is a great utilitarian underlayment.

Yup; still got mine under my Realforce at work. I got one with excess mat with the intention to cut it and fit under the board, but I've kept it on and use the remainder for resting my fidget toys.

I'm wondering if I could save a bit money and buy this instead of the official HHKB Vibration Absorption Mat. Anyone have both to compare? Also would you be willing to cut it in about same dimensions.   A bit undersized and leaving free spaces for front and back feets and the 3 screws in the back. Like this: http://www.smartimports.net/hhkb-vibration-absorption-mat (http://www.smartimports.net/hhkb-vibration-absorption-mat)

No reason to cut one of these mats up just use it how it comes for the hhkb.

I was just kinda thinking about attaching it properly on my keyboard so it would need cutouts. But I guess I can do that with normal scissors myself if I ever feel need to.

Anyways do you still have the materials?

The anti-vibration mat from PFU is much thicker and has better grip than the rubber mats that I got from fohat.digs.  I'll attach a  picture to give you an idea of how the anti-vibration mat looks compared to fohat.digs's mats.

Like fohat.digs mentioned earlier, his mats are utilitarian and they are great for preventing more important things from getting damaged.  I like to put it under the PFU mat to keep the foam safe.
