[IC] Symmetry 70 - Cancelled due to lack of interest.
« on: Tue, 28 September 2021, 07:25:41 »
Hello, yuutsu from Desktop Designs here.
In the shortest words I can, 100% Transparency, entirely upfront and honest about the process with weekly updates,
and most importantly: a lot less marketing than what we are currently seeing.

So, with that out of the way, let's begin the no bullsh*t IC:

Name: Symmetry 70
Goal: To bring out the most symmetrical design possible while using simple layouts
Layout: Fixed Tsangan 70% (60% + Esc-F13)
Mount: Modified GEON F1-8x O-ring cord.
Typing Angle: 7 Degrees
Pricing: ~$480, see change log below for why this increased. (still looking into it for exact numbers)
Units: 300 + 60 extras (60 of each color total, this may increase at a later date depending on demand)
GB Date: Early 2022
Lead Time: TBD
Front Height: 20mm from bottom to front edge, 24.3mm for effective front height
(to switch stem for the people who don't know about the better system)

Foam: None, and no optional either, this was not made with foam in mind.

Differences from Geon's mount: bigger width cord, softer cord.... that's it.

PCB Specs:
  • Made by Sakura Phoenix
  • Yellow (prototypes are purple)
  • 1.6mm thickness
  • VIA and QMK Compatible

Color Options, Sandblast: 150 (Pictured Below and in discord server):
NOTE: ALL VERSIONS OF THE BOARD EXCEPT SILVER WILL BE 2 TONE (see prototype pictures)
  • Pink (Pantone 2037c)
  • Red (Pantone 1797c)
  • Navy (Pantone 2955c)
  • Silver
  • E-white or Grey (depending on the manufacturer I choose)
  • Black

Vendors
  • NA: Desktop Designs (My own storefront)
  • Asia: TBD
  • Europe: TBD

Like I said above, I am currently looking into multiple manufacturers at the moment, one of which is in the color matching phase right now. As for the prototype we made one final change to make the 4head and chin smaller because it looked better imo so anyone who thinks otherwise can click off now.

Anyways, we also made a change to the feet for custom molded ones based off of the SCUF design by Zambumon, but those were too tall and would probably change the front height a lot for non-deskmat users, so we made it much smaller (see below)

Here are some pictures of the keboard if you would like to see them for yourself:
(please note that this is not the final design and there is a redesign as stated above, prototypes for that soontm)

Here is a sound test if you feel like watching it:

Change Log

I have cancelled this project for the time being so that I can focus on something more people might like, details to come soon.

Nov. 15, 2021:
Small update, increased price to ~$480 due to china’s Ongoing power issue and aluminum prices still being at an all time high.

Looks great! Hotswap option would be great if possible this late in the design process.

I don’t plan to offer hotswap for one simple reason: there isn’t enough space under the PCB, I’m worried about bottom out.

I sure will! I'm trying to get some exploded renders done and I will post pics along with those!

Hmm, I oddly interested for some reason. I noticed the purple color chip, is there any consideration on running that color?

Ahh yes, the "no bull**** IC".

Where "bull****" is apparently any kind of proof that you've actually made a working keyboard. You've got a metal rectangle with keycaps on it and you're asking for $450.

No way I would be willing to buy a keyboard from someone who's proud of putting out an IC this poor.
Hello again, I see you are trying to start stuff here too? I am going to have to ask you to refrain from doing so for all our sakes.

I think a $400 40% rectangle would fit your taste better

Looks great! I'd love to see a sound test/typing test, even if the prototype you have on hand isn't finalized yet.

Hmmm, I’ll have to see about this in a future version, but as of right now I think I am done with the design overall and more prototypes are coming soon, so stay tuned for that!

Defo worth a UK specific vendor, not only EU, to avoid UK buyers getting stung with massive fees.

Looking forward to this.

I am still looking into vendors for other parts of the world. So don't think it's out of the running yet!

Any possibility of adding a flex cut on the pcb itself to take better advantage of the leaf spring mount cuts on the plate?

No, I don't believe that will be necessary as the keyboard is already plenty flexy as is, not to mention softer plates will make it even more so.
