How do you pronounce Topre?
« on: Mon, 21 July 2014, 12:54:51 »
I have always pronounced it "Tope-ray", but this guy at my work pronounces it "Topp-er"... Which one of us is right? Or are we both wrong?

I say Tope-ray.

But that's just how I read it. I don't know if I've ever actually heard anyone say it in real life.  :))

Well, Canadians have center as "centre" with the same pronunciation, so I initally kind of read it as Toe-per in my own little world.

Most people that I've heard speak it (just online videos really), say it as you do.

Interesting. Each to their own I guess. It is not really that big of a deal, because when IRL are you going to be discussing keyboard switches?

Get them into it then. Talk more about it. That's also in the prophecy.

Just because people aren't into it (yet) doesn't stop me from talking about it. I was talking about my Cherry board this morning to someone I just met.

I would really like to go to Keycon next year, but I do not know if I can afford it. Do people do local keyboard fanatic meetups? That would be a fun thing to start.

Created by Japanese, so shouldn't we go by Japanese pronounciation?

Close to "toh pruh" or "Toh Pluh"

The pronunciation from my link was how the recording at the Topre Corporation said it. If it's good enough for the public recording, it's good enough for me.

that's not so easy for most people

The closest I ever got to getting a friend into keyboards, was me helping him pick out one online, but he cancelled at the last minute, because he realized he was about to spend $110 on a keyboard

maybe it's people my age but no one sees the difference after trying boards and after me trying to tell people about them...

Your "Toe-prah" and my "toh pruh" are the same I think.

But part of my thinks it should be "ray..." just because "pre"

It's certainly not easy with that attitude. Whether or not they get into it, it's something we're passionate about and I think it's a shame people find they can't even talk about it.

According to TJ's Google Translate links:

Japanese - To-pu-re (toe pooh ray)

English - Topper

Japanese - To-pu-re (toe pooh ray)
Sounds about right. (“Toe poo” doesn’t sounds so attractive though.)

It’s hard to convert this to an easy pronunciation for an English speaker though, because the "t" and "r" here are not the same as the sounds in most (any?) English dialects, and all the vowels are also substantially different than any vowels used in English. Best would be to just get a recording of 4-5 Japanese speakers saying it; I don’t quite trust the google translate lady robot voice.

If you go to Topre's website www.topre.co.jp, you can get the full name in Japanese. However, the second half (株式会社) just means it is a company. It is the first half that is the actual name and is important to us (東プレ). If you google those three Kanji you will see that it does infact point to our company.

If you then take this and put them into a dictionary you get "とうプレ" as the reading. For those who are not familiar with Hiragana that is the Romaji "To-pu-re". However, since I don't want to say everything with correct Japanse morae I pronounce it like "Toe-Pray"

See here http://jisho.org/words?jap=%E6%9D%B1%E3%83%97%E3%83%AC&eng=&dict=edict

Edit: Looks like JD came to the same conclusion faster than I did.

If we go by Japanese pronunciation of that it sounds something like toe-prey

This is correct.

Toe-Pray.

東プレ is a three syllable word. Toe. Puh. Ray. :]

It gets shortened to TOE-PRAY because of how the Japanese language works. Kind of like how "desu" is usually pronounced "dess"

Would there be a slight glottal stop after the 'p' sound, as in Toe-p'-ray? I know we're getting deep into linguistics here for something simple, but why not be as correct as possible, right?

Topre is different from desu, because it is an acronym, so it may be treated differently. Just like Famitsu is not pronouced Famitss. Edit: Nvm I don't know what I'm talking about. Tsu is different from su duhhh. I've had a long day at work :<

So, toe-pray it is to be pronounced. But I propose that when saying it, you have to try and sound like a samurai.

To'h Pu'e Re'h
But I call it Thorpe!

1/3 the way down the second page before this.

Thorpe.

One syllable.

No confusion :D
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

There was one in the old thread IIRC.

But the problem is, the usual English pronunciation is broken, because of English. That's why most native English speakers can't speak Czech or Japanese without a horrible accent.
