assuming google is showing the correct city when putting in "Great Lakes, IL" this ends up being about 1hr closer for the MN people than actual Chicago would be. But still 1.5hrs more than Madison would have been. Most likely too much of a drive unless Scarlett is going to make an appearance :p

I looked up directions to the exact spot! This...Cyber Arena.

CPT! I actually should have those kicks....I'm heading to Utah in March, and should be back here before the end. I may potentially have time to drive down. Really depends on one really annoying thing....

Everybody, please know:

I'm bringing loads of stuff to give away prizes again, and plenty of stuff to sell, so bring your $$ (I can also take credit cards with Square).

It'll be a firesale for almost everything, I gotta make room in my tiny downtown apt.

So prevent keyboards from becoming homeless in an alley.  Yes that is a threat  :)) but really. It is.  >:D

Bring your wallets (plural).
[/pitch]

[excitement]
Its going to be a fun meetup everybody  :))

I'll put it on the calendar and see if I can make this.  I live in Indianapolis, and Gurnee is a bit of a haul for me, but I would love to try out many of those keyboards. I could take the Megabus, and then hop on the Metra to that stop you mentioned (I'll remember not to talk on the quiet car this time).  Easier than driving.

Here are some input devices I have to offer:

Kinesis Advantage w/ Cherry MX Red
Maltron Dual Handed w/ Cherry MX Clear
The Ergodox (if it's ready to go. We'll see.)
Apple IIGS keyboard w/ SMK Alps mount switches
Filco Majestouch 2 w/ Cherry MX Red
Rollermouse
Apple touchpad
Might have a trackball by then
Also, I've got my eye on some more Alps boards, so I could have those by meetup time.

Don't jot me down as a sure thing, but I sure would love to go!

I'd rather drive so I can bring a car for potential new goodies and explore Chicago a little. I just need to find a hotel to stay at.

Yeah I think this might be too far for me. Madison would have been doable, but for this I'd have to take at least 1 day off from work. We'll see how it goes.

Cheers,

Added and updated everybody. CPTBadAss - I'm glad you decided to come, I look forward to comparing the 60i vs, the 80i.  i3oilermaker - I sincerely appoligize that I chose a date you cannot attend, I enjoyed your company at the Chicago meetup.  I just really wanted to set something up, because nobody was stepping up and making concrete dates or venues.

Trent has texted in his vote, he can still make it.   With just CPTBadAss missing we have a clear victory.  Motion passed.
I hope CPTBadAss will still be able to attend, I know he was planning on making a bit of a comute, but we got this early, not last minute.

You can add a couple vintage Apple boards to the list:

1.  Apple IIGS with white SMK alps-mount switches
-Apparently, these switches the tactile version of the Monterey Blues

2.  Apple Extended Keyboard
-Either Orange or Pink Alps. We'll see when it arrives at my door.

Hey Guys,

I will be giving away my Model M at the meetup! I have no idea how it's going to be done, could even be random raffle for all attendees. But just thought since I'm not using it and I don't really ever plan to again, someone else Might want to take it home with them!

Cheers,

You can put me down on the list as tentative for attending. Looking at making this into a long weekend get away to Chicago for the wife & I

I'll bring along my "Super Custom" Wenge rest with Purple Heart inlay from The_Beast that people want to see.
For keyboards i'll bring most of the 1800 collection: the green G80-180HAU, G80-1863HUMUS-2, G80-1813HFU (Dolch), RAPTOR K1 ISO, and 2-4 more Mystery 1800's which are in the works currently :)

Just found this thread.  Not sure what I'm doing that weekend, but given that I live in the area, put me down as tentatively attending.  As far as boards go I don't have much, but I can bring a Dolch PAC 65 keyboard (and hopefully the mod I'm planning to get it working over USB will be ready by then).  Hi-Fi - I have a Sennheiser PC360 headset, I think that counts (it's basically the 595's with a mic attached).  Could also bring the WASD V1 in my sig if someone is interested.

Edit:  I forgot to mention the cherry G84-4100 I have on order - will also bring that, too.  ML switches!

Ivan, did you see the pictures of the place? I agree that we may not have enough table space. Last time we covered an entire snooker table with 30 boards, but now we have a crazy amount of people etc. I think that Rinkside or similar may be in order if we can rent out a party room and pitch in a few bucks to Ski.

FWIW, when I came in for the last one I dtsyed at la Quinta. When we were looking for venue I called them and they offered a conference room for $25 for four hours. It may be worth investigating something similar. At least you don't have to drag your gear around the street. Any hotel would probably do that for ya and you have no parking issues.

Just a thought,
John

Shwing. I might be able to put another copy of AutoCAD on my laptop (it's free sucka). Solidworks I can't since they don't have free student versions, but I like to free model in sketchup before making real, hard number drawings in Solidworks/AutoCAD

Just pulled the trigger on a couple more things that I might bring.

CST2545-5W trackball.  Got tired of using this Apple Trackpad.

On another note, if anybody wants an Apple Trackpad, I got one that I'm willing to part with.

This keyboard, but I don't have a clue what it is.  Looks like it has some White Alps. Only $10 on Ebay, so I said what the heck? Looks interesting, to say the least.

If only it wasn't 6+ hours each way I would be more likely to go. But it's 2 states away... Hell if it was in Madison WI that would shave off like 3 hours of travel from the round trip.

Hmmm... If I do attend, what should I bring...
Too many expensive rare things that I don't want any greasy fingers on...
Switch testers for sure, but what else...
No, that's TOO geeky... (VesperSAINT knows, and is a convert)
Maybe my Grey 39 3494? (Yes, I have 2 3494's)
Stuff to sell if that's OK.
That modded G81 (removed helical springs) that fellow Minnesotans got to try out. (Yeah, It's STILL for sale...)
Is there anything else that you guys know I have that you think I should bring? (IF I end up going)

There's going to be so much stuff that I think only a few people should get their stuff out at a time. That way people can keep track of their stuff better.

Hopefully there will also be a second MN GH meetup as I will definitely be there for that.

And we got confirmation of eDox shipping next week. My assembler said they will be ready in time for the meet. Therefore I should be able to bring them as well!

IF I am able to come, and IF I am able to do 2 bolt mods in time, I could bring 2 brand spanking new Model M's. A 1390120 (just arrived today) and 1390131 (hasn't arrived yet). Yes they are brand new, but they have broken rivets. SDL to USB cables from orihalcon are awesome by the way.

I have a lot of keyboard sources, but I find a lot of them through ebay. I then do business outside of ebay.

BTW - He may send me a list with pics to post on these forums. He says he has a bunch of used M's.

Bummer, I was able to purchase tickets for Dark Lord Day last weekend so we won't be in Chicago until April 26-28.

If anyone here wants to set up a beer trade, I can bring anything from MN with me.

I'd like to get my hands on some more Half Acre Chocolate Camaro and Hearths Ablaze, anything from Pipeworks and Revolution too.

Looks like my Ergodox will arrive on Monday or Tuesday. However, I don't have the tools to assemble the thing and I'm not in the mood to learn at the moment.

So anybody at this meetup want to assemble my Ergodox for me?  Not at the meetup, because we'll be in a public location, but take it home with you and put it together.  I'll offer some payment for your services and cover shipping costs back to me.

Just finished my Dolch PAC 65 keyboard USB conversion mod :D, typing on it right now.  I used the PS2/USB adapter from this buy:

http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=40549.0

I had to rip both the keyboard case and the adapter apart, strip a few wires, solder a few things together, etc., but it actually wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, and the all the keys appear to be working - or at the very least I haven't found anything that doesn't work yet (scoll-lock, caps-locks, num-lock, crtl+alt+del - only bummer is that it seems like the adapter is just 2 key rollover).  Overall, I'm pretty happy with it.

Here's some preview photos of the finished mod for those attending the meetup:

Wow, I'm impressed that the option exists tbh.  But for $70, nah, that's more than what I spent on the keyboard and PS/2 to USB converter combined.

I know... I got my 1800 for free, and while I'm not complaining at that, I'd rather not drop $70 on a controller.

I'm in one of the most boring cities on the earth, Des Moines.

Right only the 186X have 6KRO on usb or NKRO over ps/2, all other 1800 variants I know of are only 2KRO. Even with a controller mod, you would still have to add diode in every switch to make it working over 2KRO.

This meetup looks really fantastic. Kind of makes me wish I could blow off the Nashville Meetup this weekend (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=38767.0) and just drive up to join this one.

What was that? Did I just do a humblebrag AND threadcrap to promote my own event in one sentence? Yes, child, that is precisely what I just did.

It would be even easier for a UK meetup since it's relatively small.

The UK is only 94,058 sq miles large, Wisconsin is only 65,556 sq miles, so around 1/3 bigger and Wisconsin isn't even a large state

It starts at 10 and goes until whenever, I was kinda hoping some guys would be down for drinking afterwards, so we should be around at 1:30.  I know Trent will.

So, anyone planning to drive from the city and want to ride share?  I'd be happy to chip in for gas.

Otherwise, it's CTA/Metra for me and I'll still be looking for a ride from the train station (probably the Waukegan stop on the UP-N line?) to the meet-up location...

Don't even worry about the Metra. I've got a car and a hotel room on the North Shore. I'd be happy to drive in to get you. PM me and we can figure things out.

Thing is, the Metra doesn't get to the Great Lakes station until 9:40, and the train before that is at 7:46.

BTW, I'm also bringing my lubed G84-4100.  And I may have swapped the MX Green switch from the spacebar with the MX Blue from the ESC key on my Dolch board because I couldn't stand having the spacebar heavier than the rest of the keys... it was starting to drive me nuts.

I just got back from the meetup myself.  Hats off to tipo!

I was worried we wouldn't have enough room but it turned out very well.  Back in 2001-2002 Cyberarena was packed front to back with Counterstrike players; today it was a shadow of its former self.  No way they would be closing at 3:30 on a Saturday back in the day.

The BBQ restaurant across from CA was closed as well. :(

Things I learned this time:

- Orange LED's on the Ducky Shine are completely AWESOME and the pics on MechanicalKeyboards.com don't do them justice.  Remember the LED's off a WYSE terminal board?  Now imagine an entire board of them.  Yea buddy!

- The XM Whites on the Filco Zero are very decent and do not deserve the reputation they have on GH.

- While the switches on the HHKB weren't as stiff as I like the board felt much higher quality than the 86U/87U I've typed on in the past.  If Fujitsu made a 55g HHKB that would be the one for me.

- During the first Chicago meetup people treated the Fujitsu Peerless as having some sort of disease.  Today was the first time I got to try them and it was very, very good.

- Imsto's thick dyesub PBT are well worth the money.

CPTBadAss bought one of the NIB G84-4100's on eBay and didn't like it very much so he gave it to me.  I'm going to give it a couple weeks but so far I think I might buy a couple more G84's off eBay for backups.

Just got back also.
Observations, how many boards did we have?
What is this Zero doing in my bag? :P
Lots of new faces and a TON of boards.
I got some coffee beans, switch tools, a Hapster, a monitor, and an eDox to assemble!

It was nice to finally meet some of you guys.

Today I learned that ergo-clears are as good as people say they are. I also got to try blacks which were surprisingly good as well. The Ducky Shine backlighting is amazing in person.
The Full Metal Filco is a pleasure to type on. Zinc keycaps are cool to the touch and seem to be resistant to fingerprints. The Dolch keyboard with possibly vintage mx blues felt much different than regular blues -- much softer and less of a pronounced bump.

Edit: Thanks for the free keyboard brush, l3oilermaker!

Great meetup, just got home.  A bit odd to put names to faces.  Boards and keycaps galore.  Did not except the proprietor of Techkeys to show up and display his vast collection of keycaps, clacks, and more.

Not sure how long it's gonna take to recover from this keyboard overload.  Perhaps by this time next week, I will be able to function normally.

Also, Dianoda brought his fancy camera and took some great pics.  Cannot wait to see those.  I took many low quality pictures that will a complete insult to everything taken by Dianoda.

Smallfry, not only did i notice your Taylor Swift shirt, I pulled up a TS song for you to listen to on my Grados!

Deepthawt, your G80-5000 and Tipo's Zero were my want to steal boards. OMG, I need one noww!

Dante, Im really happy you liked the G84-4100 so much. Hope your TKL board comes true.

Tipo, you need to do more tricep extensions with that FMF ha. And I'm glad your lady liked her caps so much. I demand pics of her board later!

I had a blast kids. Can we do this again next weekend?? I'll drive up again. And please tell me someone got pics for i3oiler's Stormtrooper army. That function row was out of bounds. I'll do a proper writeup with my thoughts on boards. Waiting on dianoda's pics. He had an AMAZING setup and took super hot pics.

Did Tipo ever tell you the story of how he got his Zero?

One night just for the hell of it I sent an e-mail to Diatec asking if they knew any vendors in Japan who had any remaining Zero's in inventory.  The told me that their vendors were completely sold out but they had one Zero still at Diatec that had been sitting for month's waiting for someone to buy it.

Well anyway shortly thereafter I had to bail some family out of their situation and let Tipo know he could step in if he wanted it.

It just surprised the hell out of me noone at GH bothered to contact them up until that point.

Ok, I'll take pity and post some of the swag I got.

Focus FK-2001 with Clicky White Alps. This is probably going to be a donor board for my Wannabe Filco Zero Board: Ducky 1087XM body pcb, clicky white Alps switches, and Dell AT101W caps/cut down case.

Orange on Black Alps GH cap. SmallFry really came through for me :D If I can't have that Filco Zero right now, at least I got you baby. CPTBadAss cuddles with Alps GH cap

i3oiler was giving out the new TechKeys keyboard brushes

And I got an Orange R3 Gamer Kit in a trade.

I'll load in more pics later.

Edit: Since I'm not sure we got a group picture, I'll load this little people review up. A mashby-esque play-by-play will come later as well as my thoughts on some of the boards I liked. Although I'm sure by now, everyone knows how bad I want a Filco Zero :P If anyone I talked about is uncomfortable with this, I can take it down. Just let me know.

SmallFry: We literally were all waiting for him to come. If that’s not a serious bro status, I don't know what is. He was pretty cool in person and he has nice boards. That 122 is an aircraft carrier! Hilarious, he was there for 2 minutes and he was already trying to hustle to get trades going. Someone gift that boy some boxes though ‘cause he was wrapping boards in towels!

Dante: Softspoken guy and he was REALLY into the keyboards. Gave all the boards a once over and really put them through their paces. Definitely a true fan of boards, I’m really glad he liked the G84 that I gave him. I wasn’t really using it and now it’s going to a great home. For anyone who wanted to know, Dianoda lubed his G84 and it only slightly improved it. But he was really cool to talk to since he knows a lot about boards and I wish he came to the MK.com meet. Next time buddy!

Dianoda: Another cool guy who chatted with me about boards and showed me the delights of how good a macro lens could be. I’m now ultra ashamed that I’ve been posting potatoes when I know that I’ve been denying GH proper pictures.

Keymaster: I’m giving him the award for best dressed followed closely by SmallFry’s all red taylor swift outfit. I’m sorry bro, but how are you gonna beat nice pointed leather shoes, a peacoat, I think an American apparel hoodie, and a proper haircut. We all looked like bums compared to him. Myself the most XD. His Leopold has the putty mod and it was AMAZING. He was saying that the worst part was that the spacebar was off a bit on it? Don’t even worry about it, that thing is so cool.

i3oilermaker: This guy is a riot. Definitely not what I was expecting and I think he loved the litster/hapster caps and story more than anyone else there. We had a blast recounting the thread and I snapped up a ton of his caps. I also liked his business model a lot: F*ck it, we’re buying them and seeing if they sell. If they don’t? Then too bad.

Trent: Apparently this man knows where all the IBM BS boards are located within a 50 mile radius of Chicago because he and Tipo brought in SO many of those for show and for sale. If I didn’t play with Beast and Tipo’s SSKs, I would’ve insta-bought one. Trent and Tipo were really tight so it was fun to see the bromance unfold. Plus he showed me a rollermouse which was a little unnecessary and amazing at the same time.

Prdlm2009: I’m really glad someone else likes Alps as much as I do. He had some amazing Alps boards and we both super enjoyed the Zero. He was super stoked to try out Akimbo’s Dell AT101.

The_Beast: He looked a little tired but I would be too if I had his backpack full of amazing. The dude has prototype numpad plates, switch lube plate, a 60% plate, a TON of switch opening tools, and his IBM boards. I’m tired just thinking about it. He also had that amazing Tipro with all the Clacks and the purple boost superhero. And he was really chill. Cheers

Deepthawt: This guy had some super cool boards. Matias Quiet Pro and the G80-5000 were my favorites out of his collection. Had a lot of fun explaining to him my collection and talking about the switch wobble and novelty cap ideas. Plus, he brought Keypop’s coffee set which looks incredible.

Tipo: This guy is a riot; he was so cool, he convinced me not to lift his Zero! And he brought in sooo many boxes/boards. It was like he was running his own eBay shop. And we all had a good laugh with his self typing Full Metal Filco. He’s got stock browns in it so if you shake the board a little some of the caps will type on their own. Plus I managed to get K really excited about getting a mechanical keyboard so I was excited as well. Tipo, I’m apologize in advance if this hacks your wallet even more. :P

To the guys who run Cyber Arena: Thank you so much for having us. It was a cool space and you guys were so gracious and tolerant of us just invading your store for way too long :D  If you’re ever in the area, go check the place out. They’re really cool dudes.

I'll post more later. I'm tired. In case anyone was wondering, driving 1000 miles in 2 weekends can do that to you. :D

mee too (LOL) and I was there!.
Seriously, SmallFrys' 122 key model F (aka aircraft carrier) with its bold red keys left a lasting impression, the FMF seemed to pose in all of its metal pride,  there was a beautiful WASD with side print keys, kbtalkings, a Dolche with pale blue MX swithes, a phantom, some pokers, CM quickfire, TOPRE keypads, 104 key mechanicals in all of their varied glory each as interesting as the next, mini keyboards and plenty more that I can't put names to and.... keycaps, keycaps and more keycaps,  a 'roller mouse free' with a unique design, some nice headphones and more private trades and deals that I didn't get to see.
As the event progressed people opened up, engaged and smiles were as plentiful as curiosity and conversation.  it was great to see folks picking up and examining the boards.  Everyone treated all the equipment (and each other) with care and respect.

You can post picks of me, I don't really mind, but I know that there were some people there that were opposed to having their picks posted.  Please PM anybody you post picks of to get their consent to do so.

You are all a bunch of paparazzi!

If Northern Illinois is still a good place to hold another meetup let me know and I'll do the legwork on the next gathering.  I know there has been some interest in Wisconsin but I'm not familiar with that area.

I will definitely brings some boards next time to share!

Also, what were some of the "illuminati secretive" trades that went down? :p

Maybe the next one could be closer to the middle of the country... idk... maybe in Sioux Falls :p :D Jk, but I'd love to attend the next one if it is a little closer this time!

Fun meetup, I had a great time meeting everyone and testing out so many boards/switches.  My favorite was probably that cherry ergonomic split board, need to find one of those.  Also, the magenta leds on the KBTalking board were really hot, as was that plate mounted poker in the green anodized case.  Lots of good stuff.

I was trying to upload my photos from the meetup into the thread, but the files are possibly a bit too large, so here's a link to an album instead:

We should definitely do this again, maybe over the summer.

Hats off to tipo33 for hosting and making this meet-up happen; to l3oilermaker for running TechKeys; to Dianoda for the professional photos; to CPTBadAss for complementing my attire; and to everyone for coming, especially those of you who brought multiple keyboards.

I have a feeling many of us will be making new purchases based on what we saw and felt at the meet. Now I definitely want a keyboard with ergo-clears -- these switches are pretty much perfect. According to Rajiv from Cooler Master, they've ordered a 'small' shipment of MX Clear switches, so hopefully they'll be available on a Quickfire.

My combined Chicago Diary/Keyboard Impression writeup

So as promised, I’d do my diary of the Chicago/Great Lakes meetup. I drove in Friday night after work and unfortunately, I got held up at work so instead of having a 5 hour drive, I got stuck in Indianapolis rush-hour traffic and that added an extra hour to my drive. Got to my hotel room, cleaned some boards, called some people to let them know I didn’t die, and then tried to sleep for the meet.

Next morning I snagged some delicious food from a diner then drove to the Gurnee Mall. I stayed at a hotel about an half-an-hour away and it wasn’t a bad drive until I got to the Mall itself. I got super lost and didn’t realize where exactly where the Cyber Arena store was so I ended up parking and moving like three different times.

Cyber Arena in Gurnee Mills Mall

SmallFry had joked that there might be security so I was pretty worried for no reason. I simply waltzed into the mall with all of my boards stuffed in a huge backpack, a box that I use to keep my cap collection, and Akimbo’s AT101.

I had called/scared Tipo33 earlier just to let him know that I was going to show up soon, thinking that most people wouldn’t even show up until 11 or so. I was wrong. I walked in to see this:

On the left is Tipo33’s collection, on the right is prdlm2009’s boards

And chatting in a circle were Tipo33, prdlm2009, Trent, Dianoda, and dante. I set my stuff down and everyone blitzed me with real name/GeekHack IDs. But almost instantly, I got to try out Trent’s unicorn vomit Model M. Incidently, I would later learn that Trent invented the term “unicorn vomit” when he was joking around with Tipo. Guys…I met a legend! :P  I also tried an SSK out that Tipo had. Let me just say that if you haven’t tried out a Buckling Spring board yet, do it. They feel amazing. They’re a bit heavy but when the spring snaps againist the cylinder as you press down, the ping (in the best way) feels amazing as tactile  and auditory feedback. Touching a BS board was like touching that BlackWidow for the first time. Just incredible. I need one so bad. Anyone wanna hook me up with an SSK? :D

Prdlm’s collection of Alps boards was super nice. He was really stoked to try out the AT101 and I gravitated towards the AEKs and of course the Full Metal Filco. The switches in the AEK were nice but they were like lighter Tactile Black Alps. And I discovered from the switch try bag that I prefer clicky Alps switches. The Full Metal Filco was ridiculous. First off the thing weighed about 2-3 Model Ms. Second, the F and J caps didn’t have any nips or scoops so locating your hands was a bit hard. But the feel of the smooth metal and the solidity of the board was unmatched. Best part though? The caps were too heavy for the brown springs and if you picked up the board and shook it a bit, the keys would actuate and the joke was born: The FMF is self-typing!

Then I HAD to test out the Maltron with Clears and Kinesis with reds. They were just too crazy for me to pass up. Immediately, I ran into an issue with the Kinesis since it has a nonstandard layout and blank caps. I struggled the whole day with figuring out where exactly my hands should go so that I could properly type on the Kinesis, but  I never figured it out. I did like the Maltron though, it could take some getting used to but I could easily learn to like it. What I didn’t like about the Maltron was that Prdlm modded it with clears and the clears seemed a bit off. A lot of them were sticky or weren’t tactile at all for some reason. And the Kinesis was so odd that it distracted me from my hate for Reds.

But guys….I fell in love with that Filco Zero. Holy sh*t. Everything aesthetically good about a Filco but with XM Alps. Soooo clicky. And nice and solid in the Filco case. Its literally everything great about the alps switch: clicky, crisp, actuation at the top, not too heavy; with the amazing looks and feel of a filco. And the HID liberator works with it?? Why did i even bother snagging a ducky/dell at101/focus 2001?? When my mods done, I'll be happy i made this amazing board but it still won’t match the Zero. Another dream board. I was so taken with this board that Tipo came up to me at one point and said, “Hey, I’m going for a smoke break….is this going to be here when I come back or what?” Sigh. If Tipo and K weren’t so cool and I could run faster….I’d have a Zero right now. Oh well.

So right after that, deepthawt and G came in with this ENORMOUS dufflebag of goodies.

This doesn’t show the best board in Deep’s collection

HERE IT IS! That G80-5000[/img]

I’m a little embarrassed that I thought deepthawt was Smallfry’s parents but its ok. He was an amazing guy and his collection was sweet. That G80-5000….it’s like Microsoft stole the idea for their Ergo 4K. Seriously, look at it. And it felt INCREDIBLE to type on. It was the first MX Browns board I liked. Plus it had a sweet coffee set that Keypop is selling and I hadn’t seen that in real life until then. I had a lot of fun with deepthawt talking about Dalek novelty caps, laughing at the Super Blacks on the G80-5000, and trying to figure out which caps are the most wobbly.

So at this point I’m enjoying the happiness that comes with too many boards and GH bros. As I find myself gravitating towards the Zero again, I realize that keymaster and i3oilermaker had arrived. Keymaster had done a sweet Leopold putty mod on his spacebar and I took some time to go and admire it. It’s so simple but it’s ingenious, just a bit of putty and some donor stems, and he managed to mod his imsto spacebar. I need to do this. And keymaster, don’t even worry about the “uneven-ness”, it’s all good. Also, I dress like a bum and it really showed when I met keymaster. When I’m not at work, I usually wear skate shoes, band t-shirts, and jeans. Keymaster shows up in a nice American Apparel hoodie, peacoat thingy, nice leather shoes, and his lovely lady A was dressed up nice too. Definitely the classiest dresser there, sorry everyone else :P.

Most of me, proving that I dress like a bum. I’m in the Born Low shirt (Albany hardcore represent) watching over my collection and Tipo’s G80-1800 ISO DE/My Collection

i3oilermaker was definitely not how I pictured him in my head. He was also really chill and unassuming. I didn’t even get a proper introduction because we were too busy admiring his case o’ caps and laughing at the Hapsters. And the center well of his goodie box had all the rarest and most awesome caps: Saw see/speak/see no evil, rag mods, the Zerg mods I want so bad, April nuclear cap, the sick Wario caps. He had a Candy Corn Topre Clack just lying about. I never dove for anything that fast ever. I had to know what it was like. And it was glorious. Felt like a harder PBT, maybe it was a solid chunk at one point and they really are hard-carved. Regardless, I want one even worse now. And his KBTalking Bluetooth keyboard was so ****ing cool. After admiring the caps, of course I had to buy some so i3oiler popped in a Square-like device. I paid for my caps right on his iPhone; just swiped my card phone. Technology is marvelous and horrible for my wallet. Wallethack indeed.

Side note: it cracked me up the i3oiler called Imsto “I-M-S-T-O” and would spell out a lot of other names instead of trying to pronounce IDs.

Check out the board that i3oiler brought in. Greatest QFR ever?

So after laughing with i3oiler, Dianoda and Trent and I went to get some lunch; nothing special, just some Americanized Japanese food at the mall’s food court. Dianoda then introduced me to the real Wallethack hobby: photography. His DSLR, macro lens, and tripod cost like triple of my keyboard collection. Dat Wallethack.
After chilling and eating, I walked in to find The_Beast and these goodies.

That Tipro

Beast has every high-end novelty cap I ever wanted: P1 purple, Orangesicle, Octopink, purple Superhero. The Tipros are really cool, they had MX Blacks. And he had some other amazing goodies including an Imsto case for his poker, plates (60% and GHPad), lube station, and switch opening tools. He was a really cool guy and we chatting about the GH_60 case we worked on together. I also might’ve snatched the Poker out of his hand because that Imsto case was so cool. I’m sorry man!!

And then SmallFry himself walked in and looked a bit shocked. I think it was because we all mobbed him. I heard at least 5 times, “Where’s SmallFry??” and I was actually in mid-text asking him where he was when he showed up. The kid had the biggest duffle bag ever and he wraps his boards in towels!! Please guys, let’s start a GB for him: boxes for SmallFry. He needs em bad. And  guys, I’m not even ashamed to say it but he has more facial hair than I do, and I’m a bit older than he is. That’s obviously how he got his lovely girlfriend S :P. He brought his aircraft carrier of a 122 Model M, a Phantom, and his QFRs with graphite and unicorn vomit. He had other boards but those stuck with me the most. The Phantom had 65g MX Blues which felt INCREDIBLE. I was like oh man, this board feels CLICKIER somehow. And there was this lovely bottom out. It was almost as if the springs were cushioned somehow and the resistance built at the bottom. And it wasn’t too heavy. Nothing else seemed different until I asked him later and SmallFry told me about the springs. I really liked those and hope to mod my Leopold with those springs now. The 122 had these amazing self-dyed red caps. But seriously, be careful with your things around SmallFry. That kid tried to hustle i3oilermaker 2 minutes after he walked in (JK <3, but he really does like his trades).

So the next hour or so was filled with us happily nerding out about boards, me drooling all over the Filco Zero/G80-5000/ SSK, and just hanging out. Around 3 pm, Cyber Arena said they were closing or wanted us to wrap up so we all packed up our stuff and moved to the food court. Some topics of note while sitting around at the food court was the size of Tipo33’s hands, tattoos, Dalek novelty caps, The_Beast’s plates and switch lube station, Boost’s obsession with speeding, Litster’s custom caps, hi end audio equipment, and how I’m a showoff for going to 2 meets in 2 weekends. It was a lot of fun just shooting the **** and unfortunately, we all decided it was time to leave around 4 pm.

At this point I got a text from my friend who asked how everything was going and I was so sad that I didn’t have a third meet lined up for the following weekend. Seriously, GHers are nice online and amazing in person. It was such a diverse group of people brought together by our silly love of keyboards. I’m glad I drove all the way to Chicago to meet all you keybros. And I’d do it again this weekend if you guys said something else was going on.

Dante, I’m so happy that you love your G84 and I’m even more excited that you’re inspired to make a TKL and GH60-ML board. I can’t wait to see what you come up with in the future. As always, I demand pics of your future projects.

K, if I don’t see you with a mech board with those caps at the next meet, I’ll be very disappointed in you. :P

To everyone else I didn’t mention, forgot about, or didn’t get a shout-out, you are all amazing and I better see you in 6 months when we meet again. And yes, the  Zero, G80-5000, and SSK will remain safe. I like you all enough that I won’t steal em. Plus Tipo and you other lanky kids could outrun me (I’m looking at you i3oilermaker, prdlm2009, and keymaster). For anyone who wants pics, please check out dianoda’s amazing work (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=40116.msg852563#msg852563). And we decided not to take group shots. If you want my silly impressions of everyone, check this out (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=40116.msg852138#msg852138).

Oh and for anyone who cares, SR60s are super nice entry level “hi-end” headphones. I liked my SR80i’s more but they’re pretty similar.

That was Prdlm.  It was indeed sweet to type on,  I have been looking for some switches to swap into the Filco Zero, and I think these are it!

I really like the switches in the Matias Tactile Pro. Or Complicated Blue Alps. I'd probably swap those in to the Zero if I had one.

And it was fun to have all the significant others at the meet. Made it feel more normal :P  Plus it was fun watching A and K really get into the boards. I'm still super jealous G has that G80-5000...

Funny story behind that Apple IIGS, actually.  A few months ago when I was getting into the habit, I recalled this keyboard from my elementary school with the greatest key feel of my entire life.  That was at least 15 years ago.  All I remembered about the keyboard was the keycaps which were shaped like a top hat.  So after some googling, I found the board on Ebay and immediately made an offer.  I thought it was rubber dome, but I removed the keycaps to discover it had some SMK Alps mount switches.  What a surprise!  Love that board.  It's like a stuffed animal from my childhood.  There always are a few floating around Ebay.

CPTbadass, great review by the way. Can't wait for part two.

Regarding the Maltron and Kinesis, they take some adjustment, but once you make the adjustment, flat keyboards feel archaic. In the Maltron, the metals contacts of most switches are worn, so it affects the tactility quite a bit on some keys. As a result, the keys feel less sharp than most MX Clear boards.  Also, the F keys and shift keys had the stock MX black.

I kick myself for not keeping the Black springs with Clear sliders, or a lighter spring in general, but life goes on, I suppose. And I always could reopen the switches for some more fun.

Regarding the Alps boards, i was excited to see all the different Alps boards as well.  I envisioned myself as a vintage Alps man before the meetup.  After the meetup and trying out deepthrawt's Matias Quiet Pro and the Tipo33's Filco Zero, my views have changed towards Alps.  Out with the old, in with the new!

I also really was thrilled to take the HHKB for a spin, and I must admit, the Topre switches lived up to the hype. The combination of lightness, smoothness and tactility are unparalleled.  Smooth like melted butter.  Also, I loved the aesthetics, form factor and layout of the HHKB, with the exception of those FN layer arrow.  I know some folks dismiss Topre as overhyped, overpriced rubber dome, but darn it, that HHKB was nice (but the price still seems a little steep for what you get.  I guess a company can jack up prices for such a small, loyal market.

I thought it was rubber dome, but I removed the keycaps to discover it had some SMK Alps mount switches.

Does this mean those SMK switches can't be mounted on any other non-SMK Alps board?  My only issue would have to be page up/page down/home/end.  Normally you could Autohotkey the capslock with this functionality but it's out of the way on this board.

Are you able to say what model # yours is?

I commented to deepthrawt on how his Quiet Pro switches were much smoother feeling than the one I had.  We both had the same experience with switches initially sticking but because he persevered his felt much better after being broken in.  His keycaps were also in much better condition then mine after a few days.  I wonder if quality improved after the first few batches were produced? [Steelseries 6gv2 still takes it for WORST CAPS EVER!]

I loved the HHKB also; much better than any Realforce board I have ever tried.  What I like about it most is - and is very difficult to articulate - how much more gentle it seems on the hands.  Almost like the difference between plate and pcb mounted.  If I had to nitpick I'd say I'm not a fan of the detachable cable; but for $250+ I'd like to think the hub is extremely durable.  I've never heard of anyone having any complaints.

I wish I had brought a USB drive with a text document filled with errors.  I'd like to see what it looks like when someone corrects them on the HHKB layout.  Perhaps even make a contest of it!

Oh yea, the Cherry G80-5000.  Legendary board.  Because i used to have a Kinesis Freestyle, I had some experience with the split keyboard design.  But the G80-5000 with the Cherry browns is a different ballgame.

However, after messing around on non-staggered columns for a few months now, the regular, old split staggered feels like an outdated concept.  I spoil myself.

EDIT:  Model# is A9M0330.  Made in Taiwan.  Some models are made in Japan.

I'm not sure if the switches can be mounted on another board.  I bet they can. I will check model # when I get home, but I know mine was made in Taiwan.

For home/end, I discovered that you use command+up/down for those actions.  On we pages and PDFs, I can use spacebar and spacebar+shift for page up/page down.  Maybe there is some combo of modifiers that can mimick page up/page down.
