UPDATE
Hey guys, I know it's been a while. I'd like to update this thread by letting you all know that for the forseeable future, this project is on hold/canceled. I'm at a point in my life where I just don't have time to be held accountable for a group buy and would rather not let a buy happen that I wouldn't be able to dedicate more of my time to.
I'm very sorry if you were looking forward to this and saving up for it. Hopefully in the future I will be able to come back to this or a new design. If you were saving money for me, i'm flattered, but go spend it on Yuktsi or someone ;)
Staccato: (adverb&adjective)
with each sound or note sharply detached or separated from the others.

Detailed view of assembly ^
Hello All,
Staccato is a 60% hhkb/wkl layout board i've been designing for the better part of this year. The name "Staccato" refers to extremely short and isolated notes in the music world and the goal of these gaskets is to isolate the plate from the other parts of the case. Increasing the torque on the screws will increase the amount of sound transferred through the gaskets to the plate and will inherently change the sound. I will provide a video in the future to illustrate this a bit better. Currently I have nitrile gaskets (the same material as o-rings) but I have ordered a few different materials including foam to test. Upon reception of the initial prototype, I discovered a few errors in my design that have since been fixed. The blockers on the hhkb version were .5mm to big, the usb port was too small to support all cable types. The 2nd prototype has been ordered and I will report back with more photos once I have that in my hands.
Pricing - TBD depending on units sold (most likely below 300 usd excluding shipping)
Angle - The case is at a 6.66 degree angle
NE ISO AVAIL? - No I will not support ISO or any other layouts than what the plate shows (7u hhkb/wkl with split backspace, stepped caps, and split r shift support. If you MUST have an ISO plate, I will post a plate file here and you can get it cut with laserboost or lasergist :)
What colors will be available - None have been selected yet, but i will ask the factory for a list of all they offer (i just submitted a pantone to get my prototype)
What materials will you offer? - aluminum only for the case, brass only for the weight, and aluminum or brass for the plate. Possibly a copper plate at a higher cost
What pcb works with this? - any universal poker style pcb (gh60,dz60,panc60,b.face,etc)
I will update this with a google form to formally record questions and answers, but in the meantime please leave your comments and concerns below.
Thank you :)

Mi piace molto.
I'm in for wkl one when the time comes
-
Looks really cool!
I’d love to see a nice beige colour option with the ability to mix top and bottom colours. Looking forward to your updates and a chance to hear what this sounds like!
-
Hermano damelo ahora.
-
WKL option is nice. :thumb:
-
I’m in
-
Colour me terminally interested.
-
Gasket mount? Yes please! That price sounds pretty appealing too. As for colors, I’d love to see some sort of Dark blue (like the QXP) or a cool grey. Obviously that depends on what the factory can reasonably offer. This looks really exciting! Will definitely be following this IC.
-
ne iso avail
-
This is it chief.
Im in for WKL.
-
Love to see designers consider sound more specifically and finding innovative ways to give us a choice in sound.
Also would love to see a dark blue such that it could be paired with blue samurai
-
This looks very interesting! I'd probably join in for that price.
-
I am interested
-
Very interested!
-
I have plenty of boards, but I am interested.
-
Will pair perfectly with GMK Wavez :))

Shouldn't the Staccato be under the note tho, for the weight design I mean 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔

Good eye my man, that was also fixed :) I'll add a render soon!
To be fair, as a percussionist, a lot of my modifier markings were always on the top of the staff so that's how i'm used to writing them haha.

Hehe was the first thing I noticed :D
Nice work tho! One thing tho, altho I love the look of the "exposed" plate I'm not sure if it's the best combination with gasket mount since that would create a gap between the top and plate and one between the bottom and the plate no?

That was my worry, but with the current 1mm nitrile gaskets, they compress just enough to make the gap extremely hard to notice. In the 2nd photo, the screws are pretty loosely tightened and that's the size of the gap. Once fully tightened the gaskets are completely compressed in the channels and it basically becomes a normal sandwich mount.
-
Still want to try out a gasket mount.
-
Good work. I’m definitely interested.

Cool, I think I'm in

Below $300, compatible with standard 60% PCBs, and gasket mount? Wow, will be watching this one closely!
-
If I got it right, there are 2 gaskets on top (care to show the top?) and 2 gaskets on bottom and these 4 gaskets compress the plate.
Not sure if i understood how your design works, care to explain?

I'm thinking instead of using screws for the plate, you could instead just do gasket insert cuts on the plate for mounting like you did with the inserts on the bottom and top case. That way the plate wouldn't require screws and it would be mostly mounted by the gaskets instead of having the gaskets just support the screws in mounting the plate, if that makes sense.
-
im in this looks great
-
Love this!

I’m a classically trained musician (masters of music performance), so I think the concept is pretty cool. But I think the weight needs work. Yes, the dot needs to go below the note in this stem orientation. But I think it’s weird to have a dot weight. Why not make the weight in a large rectangle or circle and then engrave the staccato note on it? In fact, it would probably be pretty cool to design a logo for staccato using the word with a music note integrated. I’m just not a fan of a single note. If you are set on just a note, maybe you could add a few more surrounding staccato notes and a staff and clef?

This is really nice. Looks like my kn2.10 as well -- https://imgur.com/a/4lrEgpz

I'll come up with a few ideas. I tried doing triplets and it just seemed a little to busy. I had someone suggest doing a single eighth note with a tail and maybe that'll make it a bit more interesting. I could maybe do a staff, but the clef is tricky to do while keeping it machinable, unless a bass clef or something. I'll design a few other options and maybe do a poll or something!

kn 2.10 was a huge inspiration ;) i love that board.
-
Dat is one exotic weight. I'm in :))
-
I'm game for pure HHKB style

-
I usually want a KN2.10 but couldn't get one. This looks like an improved version. I like the ideas of gasket mount, music concept and the shape. Very interested.
I hope there would be many colors for the GB. And we could have different colors for top part, bottom part and alu plate. It's cool to do color mixing for bottom part/top part/alu or brass plate.
-
Looks nice. Interested in colors.
-
Very interesting and at that price, I'd probably be in.
-
wow, this looks super. loving the relatively understated design, and i've been very keen to try a gasket mount. guess i better start saving now
-
This looks nice, the price is tempting as well.
-
Are there plans for a top with no blockers (normal layout)? If so, definitely in.
-
Really interested in this. How many other gasket mount cases are out there?
-
Will this be alps compatible?
-
Really interested in this. How many other gasket mount cases are out there?
As far as I know only the OTD 356mini and the Meme are gasket mount. The 356mini is exceptionally rare and expensive. Plus it was made back in 2010. The Meme was recently run through a private group buy so there were only a handful (10?) made.
There may be more but I think these are the two most well known gasket mount boards.

don't forget the Keycult No1 and the OTD 360 corsa (I believe), though those are TKLs

I had no idea the No.1 was gasket mount. Good to know. Glad you both could fill in my gaps in knowledge.

OP mentioned in the first post that he'd post a plate file. So I imagine, with that, it wouldn't be difficult to design an alps-compatible plate.
-
Really interested in this. Can’t wait for more updates
-
Definitely interested! Rose Gold / White / Gray would be nice, along with some poly-carbonate plate :thumb:
-
Would love to see some interesting colours like blue-grey (forgot to put that in the form) but definitely interested!
-
Hope this can successfully go into a group buy, id definitely buy in!
-
Certainly interested. HHKB. Forgive my ignorance, I'm new- do you have any prior experience producing a board?
Thanks! Looking forward to future updates.
-
Estimated time frame?
-
I'm also interested in alps option. Do you have any plan to make some alps plate?
-
Would a WHITE version be possible?
-
Looks really interesting, i'd be totally down if there's a dark red version and a split spacebar plate option for my DZ60
-
Would be super interested in buying at least one of these (if there were multiple colors I wanted) in the HHKB format! Hope we can get enough interest to go to GB.
-
Great looking board. I know I'm not the first one to state this, but colors similar to the QXP's blue grey or some kind of velvet red would look incredibly stunning. At a price of <$300 I'd probably be in. Looking forward to the GB! :thumb:
-
i'm definitely in for this
-
Would love an Alps PCB for this board :)
-
Now that the whole gasket mount market is coming in, how might the mounting of the gaskets on this board changes things compared to the GSKT00? From what I have seen of that it is situated between the plate and the pcb for that, but here it seems to be in the rims of the case. I would love to know more since this is one hell of a beauty and the HHKB layout looks like a dream.
-
I am in for HHKB layout wohoo!

Alps plate would be nice

In that case, will we be able to buy the case without the ANSI plate at a reduced price? Would help a bit to offset the cost of getting a custom plate cut :)
-
What sized space bar is used on the HHKB layout?
-

Should be 7u, it isn't a true hhkb
-
Any updates?
-
Interested for sure, a blue-grey color would be cool.
-
a champagne gold one would look awesome on this i think. definitely keeping an eye on this
-
Interested, def hoping for a rose gold
-
Are there still plans for this to go to GB?
-
I know some photos were made, but that doesn't mean a lot these days

Last I heard was late Q1... March or so.

356Mini but it's a 60%.

Is the gasket going to be "tuned" for flex, or a vibration/sound isolation?
Also if polycarbonate plates happen, I would be interested in a thick one, not 1.5mm

theres some meme potential here

Looking spicy

Looking forward to GB and final details. Any idea when you'll start the GB phase?
-
I’m interested. Any idea what the weight of this case will be?
-
would it be possible to install a 5mm brass plate with the plate file you release?
-
Someone suggested that maybe the target price was too low to assure proper QC and leave buffer for mistakes. If that is indeed the case, I personally would be willing to pay a bit more to ensure this comes out good.
-
Would also really love to see alps plates/pcb available for this!

Will the plate support switch top removal?

-
Hi kristmascane,
as you have no time and interest to run a group buy now or later, can you release the the CAD files instead? Then we can do our own prototype instead.
It might also live on and become a base for the community, similar to the famous and highly successful GH60 PCB.. I think there is a beautiful and open source standard 60% board missing in the community..
Thanks for consideration and all the best.
-
Since there might be considerable interest in this board (I personally would definitely but one), would you ever consider handing the design off to vendor (like The Key Company) or something to let a GB be run? I literally just discovered this board and I think it looks beautiful. I'm sure there would be plenty of interest especially with the amount of reach a decently large vendor would have.
