Cherry Double Shot Keys (US ANSI, Beige)
« on: Tue, 11 January 2011, 09:20:41 »
Up for sale are four sets of Cherry Corp original Double Shot keycaps. The keys have been pulled from various G80s and G81s and were all collected in a giant bucket. This means they are all mixed up and no one gets a "more shiny" or "less shiny" set. Sorry, no extra picking.

They are 101 keys mostly from REUTERS branded G80-308x keyboards, ANSI layout, beige color. The keycaps have been cleaned in bulk and all match in color.

Each set for now is: EUR 22 + shipping cost. Please limit yourself to one set per member for now. There will be more of these coming in future weeks, so keep an eye open.

Shipping:
Germany: EUR 3,90
Europe: EUR 4,90 ~ EUR 8,60
USA: Please ask.

Would be interested, but don't love to pay so much for potentially shiny keys!

What about a surprise package, where we have to sort out the keys by ourselves?

US ANSI layout
Show Image

As far as I understsand, these are 101-US-ANSI layout, meaning, they lack those Windows keys and have 1 1/2 sized modifier keys.

I can tell you the difference:

The Cherrys have razor-sharp edges at their bottom, while the SP-caps fulfill all modern safety regulations.

On the other hand, don't open a window when you have SP caps lying around. They might be blown away, while the Cherry ones are so heavy that the small little bag in the picture weights 5kg!

Does the stem have to be removed from the cap first, of can i keep the original stem and transplant from another key. So there will be 2 stems ?

Can post a pic later. And yeah, that actually is the Reuters board. Just without all the burn marks :P

Reuters is the biggest news agency, Cherry made these keyboards for them in the early 90s.

For the ones that don't fit, 7Bit may be able to make them with SP's help.

A general approximation of the font, and color for keys such as alt, shift, tab, spacebar etc.

Also he can do the F1-F7 with media symbols for a Ducky with matching colors for Sixtys set. As well as the 4 extra media keys such as calculator, pc, mail and home.

For those that sent in PMs, I will be checking stock tonight and respond to PMs.

Some asked, so quick FAQ:

Q: Are these keycaps clean?
A: Yes, the keycaps have been cleaned, but in bulk and roughly. I suggest giving them another clean before actually using them.

Q: Are these keys used and shiny?
A: Some are, some are not. The keys have been collected in a giant  bucket and are all mixed up. I guarantee that they will all match in color and will replace varying keys if needed (should not happen, I have decent eyes). You will most likely receive a few shiny keys, mainly in the F keys and number pad area, since these keyboard are from stock trading equipment. Some keys may have tiny scratches or scuff marks. These are used after all, but generally in good shape.

Q: ZOMG DOES THIS FIT MY KEYBOARd, ITS THE _____________???
A: Compatibility varies. Please keep in mind that these are vintage keycaps and lack windows keys. Therefore the CTRL/ALT keys are of a bigger size than on most modern boards and will likely not fit on your board (there are some exceptions like the Black Widow and most iOne boards, modifiers will fit these fine!). The same goes for the spacebar, which is also wider due to the lack of windows keys. Original Cherry Corp. keys have the caps lock key  stepped and therefore with an offcenter stem. This can be modded to fit centered stems somewhat easily. Please check the wiki here.

Q: How much is shipping to __________???
A: I can offer flatrate express shipping for EUR 7.00 to most places. Some obscure islands and such may be excluded. Cheaper shipping starts at EUR 3.90 EUR. Anything in Asia and the US will go for these flatrate prices. Tracking is available on express shipping, but some places are excluded from the online tracking (for example: Singapore).

Q: MY KEYCAPS ARE NOT HERE YET OMG YOU F#O#$ SCAMMER
A: Express shipping takes between 3-7 days on avg. Most keys leave Germany within 12 hours after being posted. The rest highly depends on whoever takes care of DHL orders in your country.

Thanks!

I just received and installed my new double shot set on the ducky dk-9008.

I'll post some pictures soon.

Anyway for a short review and rating out of 10 being best.

Color: 10 (very classical authentic cherry color scheme)

Font: 10 (thick bolded, excellent uniformity and contrast)

Keycap build and condition of keys: 10 (very thick. Underside seems cleanly double shot molded. Don't notice any shine. Spruce marks on the side at the top barely noticeable and doesn't have a jagged cheap feel like the Duckies did. Condition is excellent seeing as how they've already been cleaned. Any dirt marks are barely perceptible, so honestly don't worry about it. I didn't even bother to wash them, just a quick blow and wipe.)

Compatibility with Ducky dk-9008 keyboard: 8 (no windowed keys; spacebar, alt and control don't fit because they are wider in size; capslock doesn't fit because stem is off center so requires modding; no windows and menu keys seeing as it's a 101 key set. However 7bit has a ducky kit to give it a 100% compatibility so honestly don't worry about it.)

Seller conduct: 10 (answered all legitimate concerns, also very considerate in helping out on my ducky mod; shipping had no issues although tracking to Malaysia doesn't work, but not sellers fault. Over all i would gladly do business with Sixty again :} )

Thick caps :}

Somebody was worried that the keys will fly off the keyboard because of a loose fitting. I've tested that this is untrue for me anyway. After installing them then turning the keyboard upside down and giving it a few hard shakes; no keys fell out. So no problem there. When compared to the SP, the Cherry felt a slightly looser fit when installing (for the small caps), but as my tests proved this was unfounded as they sticked onto the keyboard just fine even after some torture tests.

Colors are refreshingly classic and Cherry authentic. Nice white and beige with black fonts.

Fonts are amazingly bolded/thicker compared to the SP doubleshots. Contrast is very good as expected from doubleshots.

Anyway i have confirmed the following keys are not compatible with the ducky dk-9008

1. spacebar (wider in size by comparison, can't fit)

2. control and alt (wider in size by comparison, can't fit)

3. capslock stem off center. However size fits so with Ripster's help we can modify it so there is a centered stem. The capslock i am using will be from another donor board with a window. It won't be exactly on the ducky led light, but close enough that it not be a big deal.

4. F9, F10, F11, Scroll Lock, Numlock don't have windows. Of course you could use the F9-11 but without windows it's not as cool as it could be. However i fortunately managed to get numlock and scroll lock windows from another donor board. They look simply amazing :} For F9, F10, F11 however i'm still looking for alternatives; already i have a few leads (clickclack, 7bit or another ebay donor boards for keys)

5. it's 101 keys so it's missing the 2 windows and a menu key.

6. the ducky dk-9008 has 108 keys. 4 of these are extra media keys so obviously these are missing.

7bit's ducky kit maybe be able to fix all the incompatible and missing keys.

I can't wait for my set to arrive.

in your opinion do they reduce the noise levels coming from the keycaps when typing compared to the standard Ducky keycaps?

It's hard to put my finger on it exactly but i do find typing on these rather more enjoyable.

The surface of the caps is smooth, but not to the point your finger easily slips. There is sufficient traction even without any grainy texture.

Whereas White Rice's set has a fine grainy texture to it.

Noise level hm... probably slightly more noisy. I'm guessing it's to do with the thickness of the cap and how i tend to press down all the way. Then again it could be a placebo :/ It took me time to replace the key sets, so i don't make it a habit switching between sets on a frequent basis. This is comparing White rice and sixty's double shots. Haven't used the Duckys in a while so can't remember except they weren't as fun to type on that is for sure.

But honestly i don't think the sound is a problem.

I'm typing them on cherry mx browns their quite enjoyable :}

My Ducky pbt lasered caps are just no match against White Rice's and Sixty's doubleshots.

PS: I am not sure what material sixty's double shots are :X but they are fine.

F and J are missing dibs :{ I liked having the dib on those keys when using white rice's set, but i can easily manage without.

the numpad 5 has a nipple on it however. It's very easy to touch type with that.

The arrow keys don't have the crazy steep like white rice's did. Feels more comfortable on my hands. White rice's set makes me have to claw more often compared to Sixty's.

Its nothing to do with the file format, the files are massive and never complete I leave this browser running all the time and since the pics were posted if I try to reload this thread it pegs my ADSL2+ connection and never finishes loading.

I expect the 50 MB I give for the cache cant take it all.

I always crop down and lower the size and colour resolution to save the load on the site
...and I expect it also comes from the days when there used to be 60Kb pic limits :)

/when I was a lad...

I forgot how much better fit and finish the Cherry boards/keys have, Filco and some others might be heavy, but when you look down at the keys on this Ducky or any of my Filcos the gap between each key is large,
and the top to bottom size is much closer.

But the Cherry's are much wider at the base and fit on the board better in relation to each other, on the Cherry boards at least.

I almost feel a bit silly I had never spent the time to put some of my Cherry 2shots on a Filco.
I've got some of the group one 2shot set on this Ducky with the old keys as well to try to see if I can feel and hear the difference.

..and TBH I like the feel of the Ducky keys, well they are ok there is no problem with them apart from the pad printing.
The group one 2shots are a better feel, but I have no problem with the Duckys and would never say that they are no good.

I have a few black Cherry 2shot sets I might try on the Ducky later but I am happy with it ATM.

Well for me, when comparing the ducky lasered pbt to sixty's double shots and even White rice's; makes me not like the lower contrast ducky text :/

Also the spruce marks on both double shots are not as annoying as the Duckys which i can feel especially on the top row of the keyboard. This might not matter when typing, but i factored that into the build quality ratings :/

Also when comparing the ducky windowed key to the Cherry windowed key, i way way prefer the Cherry. The cherry's window is doubleshot molded so it's perfectly shaped to the key, whereas the Ducky's kinda sticks out.

The one part where the Ducky wins is the spacebar. White rice's is too steep to be comfortable even when it's reclined and even with a palm rest. And Sixty's just doesn't fit my Ducky keyboard because the Cherry spacebar is too wide.

So it's not that the Ducky key caps are bad, but compared to these 2 double shots i have, they don't stand a chance.

I'm putting them on a black Filco tenkeyless that's starting to go shiny.  When 7bit's doubleshots eventually turn up I intend to grab myself another Filco, maybe in white, or maybe a G80 and put those on that.  And yes, I'll post a pic.

By the way,

people who are buying Sixty's key set, would you also be interested to participate in ordering a kit from 7bit to make these keys compatible with 104+ keys modern keyboards ?

i'm thinking more specifically for modern keyboards that require 1.25'' sized  ctrl/alt/windows/menu keys and a spacebar that would fit a ducky as well as many other more modern boards (not necessarily a Cherry)

I spoke to 7bit and he reckons Signature Plastic can make a roughly good approximation of keys with matching colors and font to go well with Sixty's kit.

The only problem is we need an order of 25 sets for this to go through.

So if you are interested please post reply in this thread so i can gather names and forward this list of people who are interested to 7bit.

Ok, that's that done.  Pics here, though I'm not keen on the layout I've got at the moment.  Might put a few black Filco caps back on.  The light caps are great for the alphanumerics, but not sure about the modifiers.

10 more sets in, including 2 NIB ones with virgin untouched keys. Those will  be more expensive. Ask if interested. 8 others for the usual price.
