I only press the spacebar with my right thumb. I touch type, and always have my fingers over the home keys, so my thumb presses the spacebar below the "N" key.
I am not sure what I would use all the extra pace for if I had a smaller spacebar. I try to press as many keys as possible with my right hand, so anything in that bottom row probably wouldn't get used.

Does that mean you use right handed shift, alt and ctrl keys? Personally I find that I never use them really, AltGr, Menu and Ctrl never get used while RightShift is sometimes useful for 1-hand typing for capitals.
I feel like there could be an extra thumb key left side for sure, I dont really know what it would be used for in a more practical enviroment (eg.. Not gaming), but it should have a good use I feel. Im on a mission at the moment to use AutoHotKey to replace those right hand keys with some useful functions - although so far I am off to a poor start. Possibly macroing them for common unix commands or something, but its not all the time that I find myself using Unix terminal and the common commands are either too plentiful or too short to warrant a dedicated key.
I press spacebar on a standard layout keyboard mainly under the V key. About 1.5u would be long enough.
In past polls, the right/left spacer split was about 60/40, with a small handful of people regularly using both thumbs.
The spacebar should definitely be either further from the keyboard (for thumb use) or wider (to support both thumb and index finger use), and certainly no more than 5u wide. A split pair of 2.5x1.5u spacebars is great. Use these keycaps:Show Image(http://i.imgur.com/NfvHT7K.jpg)
I wonder if anyone actually uses both spacebars [for typing], it seems like the only reason for 2 is to accommodate for everyone, but any single person will only use 1 side. For this reason it seems that even on traditional keyboards the spacebar should be split with the second half being set to another key - and then add the option to swap the functions on each of the spacebars to fit the needs of a particular person.A small handful of people do actually use both thumbs for pressing the spacebar when typing.
