Title: [GB] The Galaxy Class set (Ordering CLOSED)
Post by: norbauer on Wed, 14 May 2014, 13:53:13
[attachimg=1]

Following on extensive discussions and community collaboration in the "LCARS Keyboard set" interest check (as originally proposed by Moz), I am happy to announce that:

>>> The Group Buy for the "Galaxy Class" set is now live at Pimp My Keyboard! <<< (http://www.pimpmykeyboard.com/deals/the-galaxy-class-keyset)

If you have trouble registering (PMK is experiencing a temporary glitch), just click on the "guest purchase" checkbox when checking out.

The Group Buy closes 9 June 2014, with sets shipping a few weeks after that.

This is a not-for-profit community-driven fan project with a crowdsourced design, comprised of volunteer contributions and ideas from various members of the GeekHack community (special thanks to LechnerDE, Dansor, CPTBadAss, divito, Elrick, jdcarpe, stoic-lemon, and many others) and compiled by me and Moz into a set of design specs and mock-ups. The full history is in the interest check thread (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=48839).

If you're interested

Please join the buy (http://www.pimpmykeyboard.com/deals/the-galaxy-class-keyset) immediately at PMK. It is important to tip the set and get the price tiers down quickly so we can get buzz going for this set, both within and outside the GeekHack community. The more we are able to order, the less we all have to pay.

Sets

DSA profile. PBT with screenprint dyesub.

Design mock-ups/specs are at the end of this post.

Pricing and the Special Features of this Set

Part of the reason it's important to sign up early to drive the tiers down is that this is a relatively expensive set. This is because it employs a combination of technologies and manufacturing processes never before used in a GeekHack Group Buy (or at Signature Plastics more generally, for that matter): PBT resin, DSA key profile, Pantone-matched coloring for fidelity to screen-used props, and in particular a special high-end screenprint process for the legend dye sublimation, yielding much crisper legends than are generally found on any dyesub buy (including the recent Graphite set, which also uses the DSA profile).

Our rationale was that in order to invoke the spirit of the LCARS designs, we needed to pay particular care to rendering the special SWISS 911 font with extreme accuracy (even at small font sizes, tended to be used in such designs). Equally, the muted color tones of the original screen-used designs are an important component of the "look", so we wanted to take the extra step of Pantone-matching for the all-important yellow color, which means a special PBT resin is being custom-mixed just for this set. Feel free to read the whole long history in the IC thread to see the many technical iterations we went through to get to this final (hopefully perfected!) design. I myself must have logged about a hundred hours in Illustrator just working on the mockups. :)

Here is a comparison photo of the dyesub processes (https://geekhack.org/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=48839.0;attach=57723;image). Note how blurry the rightmost and leftmost key legends look compared to those in the center. The ones in the center are using our screenprint process; the outer keys are using the standard Signature Plastics dyesublimation process.

You never know until you see the final set, but hopefully all the long efforts, the unusual manufacturing processes, and the slightly higher than usual expense will yield a set like no other.

MOQ

To keep from scaring people away with a high potential price if buy-in is low, we have set the MOQ relatively high for this Buy (75 sets). This is another reason why it's important to buy in early. Your risk is lower of having to pay an exorbitant price if few sets sell, and the faster the set tips, the more people will be willing to buy into it (it's a sad fact of the psychology of how these things work that people are more likely to buy in only after their buy-in is most needed).

My role

I'm a new(ish) GeekHack member who just happens to have a great enthusiasm for LCARS and Star Trek: The Next Generation. When reading Moz's proposal, I got excited for the possibilities of a community-driven set inspired by late 90s sci-fi computer interface designs, so I offered to step in to help organize things and hopefully help raise the aesthetic bar for the set by working on improved mock-ups. For months now, I have been helping to collate community preferences and ideas for this set in the IC thread into something that can be actually manufactured. I compiled the mock-ups and have been working as a liaison between the GeekHack community and the manufacturer Signature Plastics in Washington state. The Group Buy is actually being run by Signature Plastics through their new Pimp My Keyboard site, and they'll be taking care of all order processing, shipping, etc.

I won't be making any money as a result of this Group Buy. As seems to be a bit of a GH and PMK custom, the Group Buy originators (Moz and myself) will each get a free set—though I'll be buying more myself!—and Signature Plastics is further donating three full sets (assuming the Group Buy tips) to the GeekHack community for subsequent auctioning in support of community projects (Moz will be taking care of this). UPDATE 10/14: they were only able to provide one free core set and Moz isn't able to do the auction, so we're sending it to GeekHack admins for auction directly.

In short: if you have questions about the design specs, feel free to bring them to me (or, preferably, post them in this thread); if you have any questions or problems with ordering, fulfillment, the final manufactured product, or any of the businesses end of things, bring them to Signature Plastics directly via the Pimp My Keyboard support page. ;)

Help us promote this buy

Please tell everyone you know about this set! From fellow Trekkers to other keyboard comrades.

To help spread the word, you can also add a promotional graphic to your signature on GeekHack by going to Profile > Summary > Modify Profile > Forum Profile > Signature and copying and pasting in the following BBCode.

Code: [Select]
[url=http://www.pimpmykeyboard.com/deals/the-galaxy-class-keyset][img width=394 height=80]https://e2ij2g.dm2302.livefilestore.com/y2pRH67ha3l3S3xmkgfQnHnqhaAEOMpMChfJWsvbcCTBYsFkP9TiorRQeLmfvGxISxwZ11mhAO1ERQf4w3puYvEX3F_ZOcuCZMeAYsT4Kds6C4/galaxyclasspromo.gif?psid=1[/img][/url]

This means that every forum post you've ever made will act as a billboard for the set, helping to drive up our numbers (and down the prices)! :D

The resulting banner in your signature will look like this:

A few people have reported hitting snags with the registration process. I have emailed the PMK people to check on what the problem is, but in the meantime please note that it is possible to check out as a guest without having to register.

Very excited about the news and hope for this to be as successful as we had envisioned, as many of you know I am quite busy and had a streak of very bad luck, but thankfully for you all I am not handling any of the logistics for this GB (Signature Plastics will), so need not worry :)). I hope as many of you as possible participate in getting this amazing and unique set.

I would also like to congratulate norbauer for his excellent and the exorbitant amount of effort he has put into this project, I merely started the idea based on a DeviantArt keyboard artwork I saw posted here, but he took it to a different level, one I can't ever imagine myself taking the project too. Well done sir.

I know. =\ Sorry about that. This is something that Moz proposed late in the game when I felt we were a bit too far along in the process to go back to the design phase. However, such a revision would definitely be priority 1 for a subsequent round.

I would really like to place the order with my account, so that the order is listed on file if any issues arise.

I managed to register through PMK home page, but I can not login to my account on the group buy page.

Haha. Your enthusiasm is much appreciated. And if not on a forum for keyboard nerds, I don't know where else "internetness" could possibly be more appropriate.

GB and PMKkeyshop have separate accounts.
At least I had to sign up twice with my same email.
[I know wtf right?]

Also, for the record. I have a blank BDJ set and it appears lighter irl than on this mockup sheet. I have a dell u2312hm.

To proceed I would need:

- a nice background for the keyboard. Ideally ST inspired. Very high quality, better a seamless/tileable bg.
- SVG or PDF of the legends with no other graphics added

I can do a 60% layout pretty quickly, so it won't show up the full set glory... but better than nothing :)

Yes, all the of the colors are sort of fudged in the mock-up as a best-approximation. I have the key rings from SP and based the colors off of that.

Here is an image of the swatches together to get a relative sense of the colors, but monitors are color temperatures of lighting vary tremendously, so without a Pantone book and the swatches in hand, it's really hard to get a sense for how the colors will look, unfortunately.

Nice one, what's with all this sudden PBT goodness being bestowed upon us now?

We haven't even seen what Matt3o's version will be like and SP hasn't even provided any pictures yet of how they'll look, so I wish they would put up some images to show their standards relating to PBT - Dye-sub production.

It's not an easy manufacture, that's why most factories stick with printed caps because they're fast and cheap.  I hope everything comes out perfectly here.

I should be in for one as well for the ergodox set, my only issue is that I am closing on a house soon so I will have a new address to deal with :).

The ergodox set includes all the keys pictured and not just the modifiers, right? Some of the other group buys on there made it seem like you only got the modifier keys (and they seemed expensive too for what you got...).

I would 100% order a set for the ErgoDox I'm building but I have one major problem with the set. The rightmost legended column being 141C Pantone instead of BFE would drive me nuts. That asymmetry would bug me enough I could not use the set. I think it would have looked much better if all the alpha keys were BFE and the entire top row be 141C (including the two 1.5 mods). I know you probably cant change it now but I just wanted to throw my opinion out there.

One thing I noticed, the up arrow key reads 'FOR' and the down arrow reads 'AFT' -- shouldn't it read 'FORE'? I would buy into this if I didn't already have three different new keycap sets incoming (Penumbra, Granite and R5) -- but it's very tempting! I hope this one flips.

I had it as "fore" originally but the visual imbalance made me choose to abbreviate it so that each pair of direction keys had the same number of characters. It just looked better that way. :) starboard is also necessarily abbreviated, so there didn't seem to be any harm.

Any significant errors we can easily tweak before the move to production. I tried to keep everything the same height, but it was a bit tricky after the conversion to outlines.

Will shipping addresses and prices be sorted out closer to the time? Because when I ordered mine it didn't give me a choice of which type of INTL mail to choose from, nor even let me put in a delivery address.

I sent them an email about the shipping issue when you place the order, and asked what shipping would cost. The reply said nothing about shipping cost.

"Thanks for the heads up - not sure what the deal is, but I will have my guys take a look... I wouldn't worry about it from your end :)

When I checked out, a calculated shipping price was included in my order. Did you not get that, or are you just saying that it stayed the same as if you were shipping to a US address?

I have emailed them a follow-up to ask for clarification. Melissa is handling the manufacturing side of things but I'm also in contact with the company that runs the Group Buy site, as they know a bit more about its (apparently slightly buggy) inner workings.

I didn't get that either.
There was no shipping fee at all, just the price of the set.

AFAIK the Granite DSA set was not your normal group buy, where it takes a set amount of orders to put it in production. SP had already created the Granite sets and the the group buy leader took the money and ran off, thus leaving SP and the buyers hanging. So it seems that SP sold the Granite set cheaper simply to make their money back.

SAY WHAT......?!?!?!?!

I thought we could trust SP to do the respectable thing but now you're saying they took our money and are now going to re-sell all our paid for goods, to other strangers on the net?

Gawd damn, this place has either changed completely to RIP-OFF central or something has gone wrong somewhere.  Looks like a visit to Paypal to see what can be done now.

I'm a little ambivalent about the asymmetric layout as well, but I really like the color scheme. Maybe I'll get some of the smaller kits, to use in combination with others.

You mention tiers for the ISO kit above, but on the PMK site there are no tiers given for ISO. Just a glitch?

Lol, that misinformation. People have already corrected it I guess but I havnen't seen the full information as posted by SP.
Mat30 never ran with our cash.
That was the Dolch DSA [in ABS plastic, not PBT and totally different colors]
and they only ever mentioned that on their PMK website.
SP produced the set before collecting money for the order on the Dolch DSA.
That's why they have it up on their website. Nothing to do with granite.

Any ways, nice little derail. It would be cheap to add extra homing keys to this set. Please consider it.

Also, dear everyone, the price tiers are hardly a break on this set, if you plan on buying it later to save $20, you're an idiot.

New marketing technique: if $5 is the difference between them buying or not, they probably weren't going to buy.

I have emailed SP about this possibility. I was thinking we could either add non-bump F and J keys to the small Battle Bridge set of add-ons at no additional cost, or create a new child deal with very low minimum just for those two keys. It may be too late, and I don't know what the (not terribly flexible) PMK system can accommodate, but I'll let you know. Sorry I didn't think of this earlier, but nobody mentioned this as an issue in the IC thread, and I don't use an alternate layout so the issue never occurred to me.

I am also going to see about lowering the minimum on the Ergodox set, as at this rate it is in serious danger of not being made (assuming at we even hit the tipping point for the Core set, which is by no means yet certain).

Understood completely; that would be asking quite a lot!

FWIW, I am actually currently exploring with SP reducing the minimum to 25 on the Ergodox set, if they're willing. The main trouble is that there are already 3 orders, and those folks would be paying more than expected if we did that. If technically feasible, we could probably reset those orders and email the individuals involved. I'll provide an update when we figure out what's possible.

Yes, all the keys pictured in that child deal are included in the Ergodox set. It should be enough to cover a full board (though somebody let me know if this is not the case; I don't own an Ergodox board myself.)
Title: Re: [GB] The Galaxy Class set (Taking orders!)
Post by: norbauer on Fri, 16 May 2014, 14:32:11
I would 100% order a set for the ErgoDox I'm building but I have one major problem with the set.

I see where you're coming from, but bear in mind that the goal of this set was to invoke the feel of the LCARS designs and not just to be inherently appealing as a set unto itself. This kind of right-angle half-arch in yellow was very characteristic of LCARS designs. It was the only way in the Ergodox layout that we could reasonably evoke it (I tried many different permutations). I do agree that on the ANSI layout, this is achieved more successfully, FWIW.

Looks like it' a no-go on this option. We still have plenty of time left though; hopefully enough people will order ErgoDox in time. If not, we'll see what we can do in a follow-up deal with a lower MOQ.

Sorry, 0% for this round. =\

what about a set similar to the lost and found the granite set came with(different colors to mix and match)?

Something like this is coming early next week. We're adding a few small child deals with 1u blanks in selected colors—mainly for people who have gamer add-on boards with 1u keys like the Corsair K95, so they can cover their full board without breaking the color scheme.

How does this work for an extra homing keys set for DVORAK, COLEMAK folks? If somebody can verify for me that this makes sense, I believe I can get this child deal live early next week.

(Deep dish breaks the rounded-rectangles visual consistency the LCARS theme, so we're using homing bump here and deep dish only in the middle of the nav wheel on the numpad.)

Well, I made an account at trekbbs.com -- but they explicitly ask that you not create an account and then immediately push a product (which is precisely my reason for joining) so I emailed the admins. Here are the emails, if others want to start a drumbeat:

news@trektoday.com
articles@treknation.com
christian@trektoday.com

And... I emailed, this guy: tbonz@trekbbs.com

I did my level best not to sound like I was selling oxycontin.  :thumb:

Sorry, not this time around, but this is an open design and I'm happy to make the source files available for future rounds. If the first round is successful I'm sure SP would be happy to run this group buy again with an expanded set of add-ons.

Really worried if we can hit the MOQ sitting on this price.

I'm not really sure about that one. I think it might be the difficulty of making 7u spacebars in PBT. I know that Topre won't do spacebars in PBT, purportedly because plastic shrinkage on so wide a key makes the manufacturing tolerances problematic using PBT instead of ABS. Maybe there are simply more rejects when they make PBT spacebars, which raises the overall cost—just a guess. =\

I haven't been paying attention and missed when sliders became available.
Could you please point me in the right direction? Fun caps was the main thing stopping me from using Topre.

I'll second this! I had no idea I could use the Galaxy Class set on a Topre! (I use a heavily-modded Realforce as my daily driver.) More details please. :)

Matt30 (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=54942.0) has created sliders that allow you to use MX caps on Topre boards. And the new CM Novatouch will have similar sliders. Also there's that....Plum board? Or another Chinese board that has the sliders as well.

Well, one could theoretically buy a CM Novatouch and take the sliders out and fit them into an existing Topre board. Depending on how expensive the 3D printed ones are, it could end up costing less. (The Novatouch boards are rumored to be ~$150.) The advantage of the Novatouch boards would seem to be that they should theoretically be able accommodate even the stabilized keys like spacebar, but I'm not sure. The Galaxy Class set would look kind of lame fitted onto a board without the stabilized keys.

you need the whole switch housing for the stabilizers (not just the sliders), but technically speaking yeah, it's feasible.

Hehe. Well, I'm using a total frankenboard (Korean aluminum housing, swapped-out 30g domes mixed with some 45g on bigger keys). Hopefully the plates and PCB on the Novatouch are similar enough to the 87U that I could just take the board and PCB out of the Novatouch housing, fit it into my aluminum housing, swap out the domes to my liking, and then fit a Galaxy Class set on top. A long-shot maybe, but I'm very excited by even the prospect. Just when I thought my keyboard hobby had stopped giving me new things to obsess over (and spend money on)... :S

So, pardon me if I'm asking a question answered elsewhere, but ... I want the ergodox set, m'kay? Right now it's hovering at 3 ordered, 75 to hit MOQ, if I 'm reading it right.

But the main set, which I'm less enthused about based on actual keyboards in my house, is about halfway to MOQ. So, my question is:

If the main set hits MOQ, will the child deals still be produced? Or do I basically no chance to get this ergodox kit.

Best I can tell you is to order early and order often. :)

If Ergodox doesn't hit the MOQ, we'll see what we can do to get it made. Worst case scenario, we just do a second round with a lower MOQ, which I think SP would be fine with, especially since (as mentioned above) the set as currently designed doesn't require printing much in the way of new legends beyond what is in the base set.

I know for granite because a lot of the keys WERE similar [mostly 1u un-subbed] they ended up producing even the low count blanks.
I feel like it's at their discretion but depending on demand for the set as a whole and for just the kits they're probably inclined to fill everyone's orders.

I had a quick look at the template norbauer sent me.

it's a great set but with the experience I've gathered from the Granite set (I encourage to have a look at the first dyesub legends (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=56354.msg1338823#msg1338823) SP sent me) I dare to give some pieces of advice, take whatever you like, disregard the rest.

- legend thickness
thickness is not constant. The base alpha font is pretty bold, symbols are on the thin side and inconsistent.

It's clear from this picture

_ is too thick compared to + (and - is too small)

- legend size
there's too much variation in size between some legends

It's pretty clear from this pic
(http://i.imgur.com/8e3MfLG.png)

Also very similar legends such as \ and / can be found in very different size and thickness

- baseline
the baseline should be preserved as much as possible. there's too much variation in some legends

- number row
honestly I would reduce the size of the numbers and enlarge the symbols (as per any keyboard). The symbols are too small as they are now.

- mods
from what I've seen sublimation tends to make legends slightly bolder than they are on screen. Those mods are pretty bold and letters very close to each other. They maybe need some review

These are the fist notes that come to my mind, hope this helps.

First of all, thank you for taking a look at the legends so closely!

These are all good suggestions, and all these issues have bothered me as well. I'll take a stab at improving the issues you mentioned and post an updated mock-up soon.

Unfortunately, the problem partly arises from the font itself. With a consistent font size set across all legends, the symbol glyphs look totally out of proportion, so I had just to manually tweak the sizes relative to each other on a key-by-key basis until it looked moderately right to me. My subjective judgment calls in this area will necessarily be different than anyone else's, but I'm happy to concede that I made some poor calls (namely, those that you mentioned).

Also, FWIW, remember that we're trying to keep things in the lower-right corner of every key to stick with the LCARS style—you had the enviable advantage with the Granite set in being able to cover the whole key face, both vertically and horizontally centered, which makes a lot of things easier. ;) The is the main problem. In order to make things look like they're in the lower-right hand corner of the key, some glyphs need to be compressed more than others, depending on the symbol in question. And, as you noted, when you do this, things like the line thicknesses look different. It's a bit of a tricky balance between size, thickness, and alignment. And generally tweaking one variable tends to throw the others off. :S

At any rate, I'll revisit the mock-up and see what improvements I can make. :) Thanks again!

I had similar issues with the Granite. The solution for me was to:

1) redesign from scratch some of the legends (for example ~, @, ½, ų and many other Granite legends are custom)
2) reduce the legends that need to be reduced and then add a small outline to give back some thickness

Also, do no go too close to the edge of the cap, my unproved impression is that they tend to slightly distort on the edges.

#2 is a very good idea. thanks!

Unfortunately, in order to align things properly in illustrator, I had to convert to outlines before doing the alignment. In order to change anything at this point, I have to go back and re-create all the legends from scratch. So it may take me several days before I have a new mock-up.

Yes, we can't add any more child deals for this group buy at this point. However, there may be a supplemental buy at some point in the near future for items like this.

Yea this is making me seriously consider not participating. Even at 75 orders $44 is a ripoff for a tsangan. We are at 8.....

If they want more orders drop the tsangan price somehow or add it into the base set like many of the more modern sales are doing.

I was a bit puzzled by the cost on that set too, but (as I mentioned at some point earlier in the thread—sorry for repeating myself), I think it might be the difficulty of making 7u spacebars in PBT. I know that Topre won't do spacebars in PBT, purportedly because plastic shrinkage on so wide a key makes the manufacturing tolerances problematic using PBT instead of ABS. I'd venture a guess that there are simply more rejects when they make PBT spacebars, which raises the overall cost.

I dunno, even at the 15-buyer tier spacebars were only $8 a piece in the Granite set... Maybe it's the multiple >1u keys, and multiple nonstandard-color keys?

But is this spacebar in PBT? GD is an ABS color, isn't it?

I believe the problems with tsangan are the following:

1) 3 different base colors. Each color is a different setup (=human work). You want to avoid setup costs as much as possible because that is what makes kits expensive at low tier (and by low I mean under 100)
2) the spacebar. I believe spacebar not included in the base kit should be sold separately because it's very likely that each buyer would get more than one making the overall price lower than putting it into a (more expensive) kit

Spacebar will definitely be PBT. I didn't find out until late in the game that this was possible, so the mock-up may still have an ABS color code. We'll pick a PBT equivalent if so.

I'm rather new to all the customizable keyboard stuff so please take it easy on me. :)

I've decided to get a mechanical keyboard and I've been doing a lot of research on the internet. I think I've decided to give the WASD V2 keyboard a try as I love how you can customize each key cap color as well as provide your own legend layout.

But, now I found this cool ST-TNG keycap set and I'd love to order it but I would like to verify that this keycap set would work with the WASD V2 keyboard.

WASD uses a very standard layout, as long as you're getting a ANSI (87 or 104). If you get an ISO layout you'll need to get a child buy.

And you can get WASD keyboards without any caps for a discount.

In case you hadn't taken note these are DSA profile and will be shorter than your standard caps.

I am working on some minor tweaks to make things more internally consistent, but I wouldn't call this a resolution to issues so much as revising a few subjective judgement calls (balancing the variables mentioned in my prior posts), mostly based on feedback from matt3o (creator of the Granite set).

At any rate, my advice is to buy the set based whether you like the mock-up as posted at PMK. There will be some final tweaks, but I can't yet make any promises as to their nature. I've been working on them as I have time over the past week, but I may not be able to post them until the GB has ended, and again they'll just be super tiny adjustments  trying to improve internal consistency, nothing major. After that, there will be a further phase of minor tweaks based on feedback from SP, and if any issues come up during manufacturing.

The only thing that prevent me to order this is the absurd cost of the Tsangan kit (that i need)

Yea this is making me seriously consider not participating. Even at 75 orders $44 is a ripoff for a tsangan. We are at 8.....

If they want more orders drop the tsangan price somehow or add it into the base set like many of the more modern sales are doing.

It's 10 right now, and only 5 days left.
As I pointed out, this may be the first GB doesn't include a tsangan set. I love this color scheme, hope norbauer can find a solution to prevent it from happening.

Yeah, the high price of the Tsangan Kit is probably keeping many people from ordering. Nobody wants to commit to the current price, but it won't get any cheaper if nobody orders - it's a vicious circle.

Maybe it would have been better to start at the 100 sets mark to offer a more attractive price?

I wanted the Tsangan Kit, but the price is to high :( Maybe if it was split in smaller kits ...  who knows. Anyway I hope at least the main kit makes it, this is one key set I really like. At the beginning when I saw the theme I was sure a lot of people will buy it, OMG it's Star Trek The Next Generation !!!!, but now I realize that we are talking about a series 20 years old .... But it does not matter I'm happy Moz and norbauer came up with this key set  :thumb:
So, 11 more to go ! Go ahead and buy more! It has no flaws, and it will be a great set to have  :thumb:

My girlfriend and I are both under 25 and are currently on Season 4 watching it all the way through.
I remember watching episodes when I was a kid, but never a whole season. The show started its run in '87.
That's 27 years. Haha. Still very excited for this set.

Edit: I want to make tsangan happen but $750 is a lot for 16 tsangan kits I'll probably never sell.

All the tiers are too expensive for tsangan, $50 @ 25 (not there yet), $45 @ 50, $44 @ 75 only a dollar reduction when the next 25 is marked down $9 to $35 @ 100 which is approaching reasonable. If someone running the buy would ask PMK to re-evaluate the pricing there may be an error in the price tiers, it wouldn't be the first time. I'm going to flat out say it, I will not participate if I can't get a tsangan for a reasonable price in the low $30 range or less.

It's really strange, but on the other hand I saw that smaller kits tend to be more expensive. But I think we should check with SP, maybe .... 50$ it's a steep price for a bunch of key caps and a space bar.
From that kit I needed only the 1.75u SHIFT and the 1u FN
Anyway 9 more and we reach the MOQ for the base kit  :thumb:

The word from SP is that the unusual Tsangan price is due to the higher quality legend process we are using:

Quote
Unfortunately it is not an error. The reason for the high pricing is mainly due to the custom sublimation paper that we are using. We are purchasing this for your order, where the Granite paper was printed in house at a much lower cost. We can only print one Tsangan set at a time whereas all the other kits (with the exception of the main) are at least 2 or more. ...

In my opinion this is a still a very successful GB especially after many people spent their money on the Granite Set.

I know that every kit counts, I did some PR also on DT :D People tend to forget about these GB's and remember when it's too late. A little inception is always good :P
In the meantime 8 sets to go for the main kit! Buy more  :thumb:

It is worth remembering perhaps that PMK is a relatively new site, as is the whole direct group buy thing for SP. It is surely a work in progress with plenty of kinks to work out, but it is cool that they are willing to deal with hobbyists like this at all. For a company that largely does work for other large manufacturers, a set like this one is a very small order with low margins, I'd guess, given the amount of labor and communication involved relative to the order quantity.

PMK is a great thing and people should be more supportive, it is the first time a company is offering such a service and it opens so many opportunities, this very GB is an example.
Title: Re: [GB] The Galaxy Class set (Taking orders!)

Objects in space: fifteen 1x keys and one 6.2x key - $28 - DCS profile
Galaxy Class tsangan: eight 1x, four 1.5x, two 1.75x (one off-center), and one 7x - $50 - DSA profile

So almost twice the price. I know that larger keys cost a bit more, but this is extreme. Also the Galaxy Class tsangan doesn't have dye sublimation on the spacebar. Additionally I'm not sure on this but I wonder if DSA uses more plastic per key than DCS?

What is the "Higher quality legend process"? Is it something different from normal dye sublimation?

The fact is a lot of people that might buy from PMK are using boards that require a tsangan, and those people are not going to participate if the price is too high. SP sells their "extra" keys at $2.50 a piece, so if there happened to be extras of the tsangan left over I could buy the set that way for $37.50

What is the "Higher quality legend process"? Is it something different from normal dye sublimation?

Absolutely. Because of the smallish legends on this set and the importance of the font to the overall theme, we opted to use a rare high-end screen-printed dye-sublimation process (not used on Granite or, to my knowledge, any other recent GeekHack group buy). It yields much crisper legends.

Here is a photo comparing the two processes. The two outer keys are examples of LCARS legends printed using the normal process. The keys on the inside are keys printed for another job (a phone keypad) using the screenprint process. The difference should be obvious in the picture, but I can vouch that in person the difference is even more noticeable.

So, yes, there is a premium price. But this is a small-run hobbyist project using the highest-end processes available (we're also doing other things like a custom-mixed Pantone-matched resin color), so that's somewhat to be expected. And I take SP at their word about the extra challenges and cost of the Tsangan set in its current configuration. I'm not sure what else to say beyond that. Given that we're doing things that haven't really been done before, I don't think there is a baseline for comparison to decide what is or isn't a fair price. Each person can decide privately whether it's worth it to him or her.

Don't forget, it's not just the size. From what I understand, they make the blank keys, and then separately have to set them up in a printer to print the legends. There's restrictions on which keys can go together and how many can go at one time, so to pull some numbers out of the air, the Galaxy tsangan might take four setups while the Objects only two setups. Matt3o mentioned something similar in the Granite buy: adding the needed smaller shift to the ISO key buy doubled the price, despite it being only one key, purely because of the setup costs.

Tweaked legends attached. The bizarre quirks of this font and the unusual use of bottom-right alignment make many of the super fine details hard to make completely consistent, but hopefully this moves more in the direction of what matt3o had in mind?

If this looks OK, I can work on bringing the other sets in line with this one.

This is admittedly somewhat subjective, but I have somewhat intentionally downplayed the size and boldness of the punctuation glyphs to preserve the overall feel of looking at a alphanumeric-heavy LCARS display panel (see last attachment). However, I have tried to make everything more internally consistent compared to the last version.

In my opinion this is a still a very successful GB especially after many people spent their money on the Granite Set.

I am betting that they'll make the ISO set at the lowest price tier even if it doesn't "tip," since many people will have been banking on getting that set in order to make the core set fit on their boards. I'll certainly make that recommendation anyway. Tsangan is more questionable since it's a larger undertaking; we'll see how many orders we get between now and then.

I really hope they make the Tsangan. I'd even purchase a second or third if they were on the fence.

In regards to the legends, my immediate impressions are it looks fairly uniform except the @ is too thin, the ? is too thick, and the double quotes are too close together.

I think you're right on the @ sign. I added another 0.1pt to the outline.

The question mark is the same point size as the other punctuation marks, but I also agree on that one and will manually downsize it just a little bit. (Swiss 911 is a really weird font.)

Perhaps I should have asked before I ordered :), but, once this deal expires, how long does it take for them to make the sets and ship them out?

4-6 weeks in my experience

Don't nail me down on that! The doubleshot Macross Set was produced in this timeframe - maybe dye subs take longer...

No worries. I just wanted an idea of how long this takes. I didn't know if it would just be a few days, or weeks or months.

It seems they do, as it's a two-step process. Proofs have to be made and checked as well.

For example, Granite ended April 17, so we've just past the 7-week mark. All the keys have been molded, and proofs are being checked. Full scale production should be any day now, but that + shipping also takes time.

Galaxy has a special printing process and a custom color, and I wonder how that will affect things.

Good things come to those who wait  :D

If the problem isn't sorted out after the buy ends, PM me and I'll ping Melissa for help when we're discussing the manufacturing details. Even if the site isn't working, she can probably process an order add-on manually.

Sticking to my word since tsangan was never changed. I struggled with the sets in my cart, but I'll just have to drool over other peoples pictures. Custom colors are free so tsangan being so much more expensive than other similar key count sets just doesn't make sense.

I'm norwegian, and I've just changed to using ANSI.
If you're working with programming or unix the US layout is so much better, also you actually get to buy keycap sets.
It is pretty obvious that the people designing programming languages were using US layout:
Compare []{}@` on nordic and us...
For those few times I need nordic letters, I use the compose key

The problem is that only the main kit has shipping included, when you order some extras, like I did shipping is not included and we get the shipping address1 missing message. The original order went without any issues.
At this moment I really doubt it will be solved until the GB end. There is one way I think, if I get something from an other GB just for the shipping, but I don't want to go that way.

Also for the first time I uderstood from the techical poit of view what DS and what Dye Sub is. It was a pleasure from start to end to read the thread. This set will be special in so many ways, as far as I know is the first time custom Pantone is used, and the printing technique is also a first among GB's.

In case some of you missed the email, I just got this in my inbox:

Quote
Thank you all for another successful group buy! The Galaxy Class keycap set has tipped and is on its way to production. As you may know, Key Collective created this group buy with some specific requirements and as such there will be some time involved in manufacturing this set to make it just right. We are going to be using an outside source for sublimation paper - what this means is that we need to have the paper tested and approved before we send it out to printing. We hope to have this tested and on order by next week. We do have a lead time of 4 weeks from our sublimation paper supplier, so I don't anticipated being able to start printing any sets until the end of July. I know this seems like a long wait, but we want to make sure we get this right.
In the meantime we will be running the blank keycaps and staging them so we are ready to print once the paper is received in house. Please be aware that you won't receive any updates from me during this time. When we start production I will do my best to post some pictures of the progress.
When production is complete, orders will be shipped out via USPS - you will receive a tracking number from stamps.com when they do ship, so be sure to check your spam folders in August.
Thanks for your patience with this one - the wait will be worth it!

Melissa Petersen
Signature Plastics LLC

So, nothing to do now but sit back and wait.

Thanks so much for saying this; it is greatly appreciated, truly.

I do think most people don't quite appreciate how much work goes into one of these things. I certainly didn't beforehand; otherwise I probably wouldn't have gotten myself into the long-running, complicated mess in the first place. ;) All the same, I'm glad I did, and I'm really looking forward to this set.

Incidentally, having PMK on board really made things easier than they could have been if we had to handle all the ordering and fulfillment logistics in addition to the subtleties and complexities of the manufacturing and design stuff. To be sure, their site should be considered in an "early alpha" stage and is extremely buggy (in a way that grievously hinders sales), but the premise is wonderful and I hope they'll persist with it.

I'm super psyched I got in on this group buy.  Number one I love Star Trek.  Number two it's DSA profile, something I don't have.  Number three the more I read about the manufacturing process, the effort and the attention to detail that are going in to this set it sounds like it's going to be something special for sure.

I can't wait to see how this set will look, August seems so far, my set will reach me start of September, Romanian customs take up to 3 weeks to process a package. I guess they wonder why somebody would pay 100-200$ for coloured pieces of plastic, and keep on looking at the package for up to 3 weeks until they are sick of it :D

I guess the waiting time will pay up. The dye sub process that will be used on the Galaxy Class Key Set is a special one. The result of this process are crisp legends, with even better contrast than the standard process. It is the first set that will use this. And not to mention the custom color for the orange keys.
I'm so excited about this set, I bought all the kits main TKL, Numpad, Tsangan, ISO, Battle bridge  :thumb:

Any progress news ?

Not much. We're working on tweaking a few final tiny details where small parts of the glyphs appeared blurry using a standard lower-quality test sublimation  (the exclamation point just looks like a line right now, for example). It would probably be fine, but just to be 100% sure everything looks OK when printed on the higher-quality process, we are fixing these issues anyway. Then the order will be sent off to the specialty screenprint paper provider, which is when the long wait starts. =\ As soon as the screenprint stuff is in, they'll have everything ready to proceed quickly to production at SP. No pics that I can post yet, but I'll post proofs when we have something that looks like what the final product will be—several weeks from now, no doubt.

Indeed it is :D
@norbauer: My favorite board is HHKB, but there is no way I can put this set on it. So at first I planned a hand wired MX version, but in the meantime there is a small GB over on Deskthority for 60% fully programmable PCB's and I will be using that for my board instead. The layout will be HHKB but for the bottom row I'll be using the Tsangan kit (1.5u+1u+1.5u+7u Space+1.5u+1u+1.5u) , yes the expensive Tsangan I got that one :D
For the case I want to make an acrylic one, black shiny acrylic like the LCARS panels.
And because I'm a 60% keyboard user and I bought also the cool numpad kit I'll buy also Leopold 210 numpad next month to go with.

P.S: I'll have to save some money also for customs taxes, I'm expecting at least 24% VAT
P.P.S: I hope we will receive the set also in the cool "Thank you" box

Cool. I was thinking of painting a Filco Ninja tenkey board the sort beige/tan color that is used as the housings for computers on the 1701-D (like the material around the con and ops stations). If I do, I'll post pics with the Galaxy Class set fitted on it.

I'm excited to fit these on my shine 3 tuhaojin. If that doesn't look absolutely beautiful I'll probably strip the anodising and leave it grey. Or re-anodise to some other complimentary colour.

Planning to put this set on a Deck Hassium Pro (http://www.deckkeyboards.com/product/hassium-pro-108-key) in "ripple explosion" mode. W/ that and the sparkly case this board is the best off-the-shelf fit for this set IMHO :D

I saw that mini GB. What GON is creating is pure awesomeness, I was very close to join it but in the meantime there is a small GB over on DT for faceU 60% PCB's, really cheap, so I'm getting 2 of those
Maybe some day I'll have the money for a GON creation, but for now I'm happy with a full programmable 60% PCB. I will use for starters the cases from my Poker X keyboards.

Does that mean they got the paper in and are actually manufacturing? I really hope they create a test set to verify the sets are up to par. I'm currently waiting on some granite replacements due to misalignment.

I don't know, the lead time for the paper is 4 weeks so I guess we have to wait.
As for QC I'm sure that what went on with Granite was a lesson learned and Galaxy will go smooth and will be the perfect set :D

Did I read a while back that someone bought a bunch of extra sets to sell later? Does that include tsangan kits? I didn't order one when I had the chance as I didn't realise my Lightsaver plate would be winkeyless. Will anybody be selling extras?

Well, Techkeys bought a bunge of kits for resale, but I don't know whether these included the Tsangan Kit.

I haven't heard anything yet since the screenprint artwork went out to the third-party printer. Presumably they're still waiting on that process to complete at this point.

It looks like the CM Novatouch release got pushed back two weeks, so I guess I'll manage to wait longer for Galaxy Class. I still can't believe that I'll soon have an LCARS keyset, and on a Topre board no less. :D

Quality control was hit or miss. One of their presses was off so some keys had legends misaligned, keys had uneven spacing due to slightly off stems, keys that had odd warps, etc. The galaxy group buy has a lot of pictures of the misalignment and odd spacings

Ah, interesting. Yes, I suspect that with dye sublimation getting the registration just right is the biggest challenge. Hopefully they've learned some QA lessons that will carry over into this buy.

My own main concern/hope is that the colors on the numpad nav-wheel thing end up looking good. Because we're mixing a dye with an underlying resin color, it's hard to predict what the end-result is going to look like. I specified that ideally the colors on the legends should match the color of the blue resin used elsewhere in the set for key faces to make things visually cohere. However, the ultimate color resulting the combination of pigments is hard to predict. Hopefully it ends up looking good at least, even if not a perfect match.

Also, registration is going to be a concern on the numpad set, since we're bringing the printing right to the edge of the key face. Being off by even a tiny bit will be very obvious there.

Just wanted to give a quick update on the Galaxy Group Buy! We received sublimation paper for the full core set but are still waiting on the others as they involve custom colors (my supplier indicated this will take a bit longer than normal as they had to source the correct colors). I hope to be able to test the core set next week (production schedule willing) and will send a sample image to the Key Collective and pending his approval will hopefully be able to send this picture out to the rest of you. We are still a few weeks away yet and we thank you for your patience on this one!!!
As a side note, to all of you concerned about the issues we had with the Granite set, we have those worked out and this set should hopefully be close to perfect!

So I got the first sample of the Core Set, and I have to say, things are looking amazing. The color-matching has truly exceeded my wildest hopes, and I'm incredibly pleased with the overall color scheme (both the individual matches, and how the colors look together).

[attach=2]

Sorry that the pics I have were hastily taken on my dining room table. I figured everyone would want to see them sooner rather than wait for my light tent to arrive next week. ;)

The legends using this screen-print process are like nothing I've seen in PBT before. Here is a capture from an image with my 58mm lens at 100% zoom (i.e., ultra close-up)

[attach=3]

Here is a high-res of the full set. I tried to massage this one a bit in Photoshop to give the best possible sense of what the colors look like in person (the camera tends to over-saturate them compared to how they look IRL).

[attach=1]

The numpad is causing a bit of a hold-up, unfortunately. The color-matching looks good based on a rough sample they sent me, but I don't want to post it because the registration is off and the sublimation quality not consistent with the rest of the set. Melissa is working hard on improving this before moving to final production. This is going to cause a slight hold-up as they thus have to go back to their sublimation paper supplier's ink supplier (in Europe) to see if a better formulation will be possible. She'll be sending out an update to all buyers to this effect shortly. However, I have reassured to her (and I hope this is OK with the majority of buyers) that we'd prefer to wait to get things right rather than rush to production. This GB has been many months in the making, so we want to make sure everything comes out perfectly (especially given the importance of the numpad to the overall uniqueness of the set's graphic elements). We should have more updates on this subject this coming week.

In short, though, I am stunned at how well this set has come out so far. The Pantone matching was perfect, and I think gets just the right yellow we struggled so long to obtain. And these screenprint legends are crazy awesome; they do a great job of capturing the characteristic details of the tiny Swiss 911 font. Also, FWIW, I can vouch that the PBT DSA caps feel amazing to the touch when typing on an MX Red board (the one you saw in the photos).

I'm feeling very good at this point about all the creative choices we made up to this point. I hope you guys all agree. :)

It is actually less vibrant than it looks in the photos, especially now that I look at them on my phone here. The camera creates a slight over-saturation, for some reason. I tried to correct for this a little in the third image, but you'll mostly just have to take my word for it. ;) monitors vary considerably.

Just got this in my inbox from Melissa:

Quote
Quick update on the Galaxy Group Buy, but first let me thank you for your patience! My supplier sent samples of the custom color sublimation paper last week and I was able to get a test sample off to Key Collective, with my reservations. While the color of the print was good, the saturation of the ink on the paper and thus transferred to the keycap was well below my expectations. In turn I contacted my supplier and was just updated that the ink manufacturer is re-formulating the ink and sending it out next week. I HOPE to have some test paper by the 2nd week of September. I realize this is taking FOREVER and I apologize, but we want to get it right!!
Please let me know if you have any questions - if your delivery address has changed since you ordered, let me know and we can get it updated in our system.
Thanks again!!

I really like it a lot, though the lack of auto-focus is somewhat irritating for everyday photography, so I tend to keep this lens around for specialty macro shots from a tripod like these. Not a common occurrence, frankly. =\ Here (http://ryan.norbauer.com/photography/scott-kemp/) are a few other photos I (mostly) took with this lens, FWIW.

(Apologies for the digression from the thread topic.)

Now I wish I had more time to work on my photo-skills :( What I miss w/ the manual focus is a decent focusing screen, unfortunately swapping screens isn't part of my current camera body's design :/ As a result I use the 2/35 less than I would like to. Good to see an update, by the way is it too late to change FOR to FORE? I know we went through this before but after actually seeing it printed I don't think symmetry is enough to warrant the misspelling

It's admittedly a subjective choice between the two values, but I don't think it's right to call it a misspelling any more than, say, our having used "STBD" for "starboard."

And in any case: "for" is short for "forward," not "fore." The torpedo bays were, for example, always identified by "forward" and "aft."  http://en.memory-alpha.org/wiki/Torpedo_bay

Yea it's just subjective, I'm use to nautical terms where fore and aft reign supreme. STBD is a standard abbreviation but forward tends to be abbreviated "FWD". Certainly for isn't the end of the world but I think it would fit better with stbd/port/aft. Honestly I'm just being picky and you should probably ignore me  ;D

I haven't heard any updates since the last one, but Melissa did say that there would be some delay going back and forth with their paper supplier and their ink vendor in Europe, so I'm not concerned. At this point, I think all that is required of us is patience. :) Though  I am super excited to see the final product, given the encouraging sample set results.

I just got a notification yesterday that SP sent me another parcel. I'm betting this is a sample of the numpad set, which is good news as it was the last remaining unresolved production issue. As usual, I promise to post here as soon as I have anything.

Hi all,

So I need a bit of feedback/advice. They have diligently tried everything they can to get the blue color to saturate fully into the plastic on the numpad set but haven't had any luck. Currently it looks about 90% of the way there, but there are some spots on the keys where the entire surface is covered in dye where the saturation of the dye into the plastic is a bit lighter than in others.

[attachimg=1]

This is most visible on the bottom key in the image above. (Note that the registration is off a little, so don't judge these samples on the basis of how the legend lines up with the edge of the face.)

SP have gone back and forth a number of times with their paper and dye suppliers on this and their vendors tell them that this is "as good as it gets," so there is only so much they can do on their end with their tooling to improve the saturation.

We have some options. We could switch the numpad nav wheel color to black, which should look as good as all the other legends, though it would make the set slightly less visually interesting (in my opinion). We could also switch to gray. These two options would be fast and easy and would almost certainly yield better results from a technical perspective. We could also try for a darker color of blue that might saturate better, but this would mean a delay of yet another few weeks and there is no guarantee that we won't still end up having the same problem. Another option is simply to stick with the current blue that matches the other blue color in the set and simply be OK with the slightly uneven saturation. All of these options are slightly sub-optimal, but I'm sure they'll all still make for an overall awesome set. So I'm conflicted as to what the best course of action is.

I would be interested in thoughts anyone may have.

Unfortunately, that is all that they sent me. It should be somewhat representative, however, as the other legends in the nav wheel are just rotations of the same image.

For me is OK, I'm sure that in reality it looks way better. It doesn't look that bad, I think choosing another color would just not be the same.
So for me is OK :)

I would vote for going with the current color. However, it is essential that the legends line with the edges, even off by a bit and it would look considerably bad.

I totally agree. If the numpad ends up mediocre, I will never use it. This would be really unfortunate because I think this set looks best on a fullsize board!

After waiting for so long we shouldn't take any shortcuts and settle for the second best solution just to get the set a little earlier.

If it doesn't work with blue let's go for black so it's at least consistent with the rest of the alphas.

Title: Re: [GB] The Galaxy Class set (Ordering CLOSED)
Post by: mer on Thu, 25 September 2014, 07:40:54
I'd vote to change it to black. We know the saturation would be good and it'd match the rest of the alpha keys. And, I personally think black may be a better choice any ways as I think LCARS on ST:TNG seemed to always have black legends on all the controls.

One other thing though: I thought the center/5 key was supposed to be a circle legend. From the samples it seems they are making it a square (covers complete key top).
Title: Re: [GB] The Galaxy Class set (Ordering CLOSED)
Post by: animaliaparadoxa on Thu, 25 September 2014, 07:51:19
I would keep the blue we already have. I don't think it looks so bad.

Though It is square-ish instead of a circle as in the renderings. That bothers be more than the saturation.

I think one of the problems is having the "printing" go to the edges of the  top of the keycap, as even the slightest mis-alignment is very discernable. I don't know difficulties in the manufacturing process related to this alignment, so I won't presume to demand that everything perfectly aligned, but it is definitely an issue.
The color seems fine to me.

Would you be able to provide a side-by-side photo of the "blue" keycaps (arrow keys or F1-F4 keys) with these? I would prefer the blue, even if it's 90% so long as it didn't look totally off from the other blue keycaps.

Thanks for all of your hard work on this - these are looking great!

I still prefer the blue even if not saturated, as long it is centered and well done. I feel black would be too much. Maybe we could do a pool, a simple voting would solve this.
The numpad is important, this is maybe one of the most emblematic elements of this set.

My concern with the numpad is not that it's just under-saturated but that it's unevenly saturated. It's admittedly subtle variations in the saturation, but I want this set to look as professional and high-quality as possible, and the uneven saturation looks a little cheap to me. This is why I think I'm leaning slightly toward switching to black dye. I think artistically it's less interesting and a bit of a disappointment, but is our best bet technically--and as another user pointed out, it actually probably more consistent with LCARS graphics.

However, I'm open to persuasion. ;) Maybe we should try to go with a darker blue and if they still have the saturation problems, then just switch to black? It would mean a further delay and we may very well still end up with black, but at least it would give us the sense that we had explored all our options? I'm personally in no rush.

From the photos the print is not OK in blue, that is why I said that "if it's well done" .
If they can make it look crisp and on the spot in black than we go black, but there must be no mistakes, if it's black it must be perfect. And I think it will look good in black, maybe I looked too much at the original mockup and I can't imagine the numpad in other color than blue :)

I believe that would suffer from the same saturation problems. The darker the color the easier it apparently is to get the dye to saturate into the resin properly. I'm also not sure that it would be a good aesthetic choice, as it would mean we'd lose the tone variation between the graphical and textual elements of the numpad.

Maybe we should try to go with a darker blue and if they still have the saturation problems, then just switch to black? It would mean a further delay and we may very well still end up with black, but at least it would give us the sense that we had explored all our options? I'm personally in no rush.

I think that's the best approach! I my opinion further delay doesn't matter at this point and exploring all options is more important  :thumb:

I am leaning in this direction and just made this request to SP. It shouldn't take too much longer, and it at least will allow us to feel like we explored all our options. However, SP have spent a lot of time and resources on test runs and samples for us on this buy, so if they say that two more runs of testing and samples is just too costly, I'm not inclined to push back too hard and would perhaps just tend to try to work with them on getting black legends to look as good as possible (i.e., to ensure that the registration issues are solved, including possibly slightly modifying the graphics to not come quite so close to the key face.)

If a darker color means crisper legends that would be my vote

My understanding is that this is generally the case.

Could you make a quick render with black on the Numpad?

I will definitely do a new render before we finalize the decision. I'm currently traveling in San Francisco and won't be back at my home computer until Sunday, but I should be able to make a new mock-up by early next week.

Thanks for all the input, everyone. Keep any further thoughts coming. This has been very helpful.

Sorry, this is probably a more accurate representation. It turns out their deep dish keys are rounded rectangles, which is different from the CAD drawing I was working from originally.

They're concerned with saturation on the gray also. It should be OK on the small legends around the outside of the numpad (hopefully!), but large areas of full sublimation present the same problem on lighter colors.

OK, looks like black is the way to go then. Let's consider that the plan of record. It's probably more accurate to the original LCARS graphics anyway, which I fully endorse.

If for some reason there are problems with saturation on the gray legends, we may have to fall back to black on those too, but we'll see. If that's the case, we should probably consider colored dyes a no-go option for SP group buys in future.

I'd love to see the full set on a LightSaver!

I would have preferred the blue if it matched the darker blue keys, but am fine with it either way.
@chris: i have a v1 and a v2 lightsaver I'll show it on.
I have a black gon ns87 lined up as its permanent home though. :D So that makes the numpad less important to me.

No, the ordering phase is over.

But since Techkeys will have them in store, you could PM i3oilermaker to reserve one numpad before everything sells out. I have the feeling Techkeys will sellout very quickly because many people regret not joining this GB ;)

This group buy hasn't even went to full production phase yet so I wouldn't hold your breath on that. But as was just mentioned above techkeys.us will have sets once they are done.

The mock up with black stands out like a sore thumb compared to the blue.  It looks completely our of place.

@D01: if you would have followed the discussion in the thread you would have understood why we settled for black... Instead of insisting on blue and ending with a crappy non saturated print we chose black for a crisp legend, besides the black legend is in the trues spirit of the LCARS interface.
If you are part of the GB you should have expressed your opinion before e decision was taken, and come with a proposal for an alternative.
This design created a lot of technological challenges, it was a first from so many points of view and the limits for the dye sub process were pushed to the limit in order to get one amazing key set  :thumb:

Dang, too late. Have to agree, the black printed pad creates a very unpleasant dark spot :( Even w/ slightly uneven saturation the blues look way better. Have to wait to see it in real life, I just hope all the waiting wasn't in vain.

I am extremely sympathetic to where you're coming from on this, but having seen them in person I can say with some confidence that people would have been disappointed by the blue numpad. The uneven saturation looked totally unprofessional, very much not in line with what we're paying for these. And SP's paper supplier was adamant that there was no possible way to get better saturation.

If only they could match dyesub and double shot techniques within one material. Oh well. I think the end result is going to be the best result possible given the materials and methods available to us which we have all, including SP, had to learn along the way.

Fair enough. Could we get a blank numpad "5" cap along w/ the printed one ? (I did order blanks, but the "5" cap is a deep-dish (?)) I like the color balance in the mockup w/ a blank cap better.

I think this deep dish blank would be a good compromise for people who think the black is too much.

I would recommend starting an after-market group buy for this on PMK, like someone recently did  (http://www.pimpmykeyboard.com/deals/nuclear-data-green-re-legendable-sa-row-3-keycaps/)to add relegendables to the Nuclear data set.

I'd be opposed to black except its the same color as the rest of the legends - especially when partnered with the limited accuracy of the blue sublimation

That seems a bit extreme for a single keycap that maxes out at 79 units. Two caps GD blanks sold for $0.60, $0.30 per cap. I would rather have SP not include the fancy "THANK YOU" caps and get the blank deep-dish BFE cap to compensate for the change in colors.

And I can't say how much I appreciate your efforts.
I recently acquired my black GON TKL to put these on.
It's the keyboard I dreamed of using these with, I thought it would emulate the computer screen feel perfectly.
I'm sending it out to be built early next week.
This will be a truly fantastic keyboard.
You've done an excellent job and I think the quality of the set reflects that.
It's too bad about the blue, but honestly I think the black matching the rest of the legends is still very cool.
Especially with the added blank so people can push the color balance whichever way they feel is best.
I think this is hands down my favourite keyboard set.
Bravo.

Last I heard printing was happening this week, so unless there was a delay in getting the ink medium from their paper supplier, I would guess shipping should be happening this week or next.

Here we go, on a Deck Hassium Pro:

(http://s18.postimg.org/3zn1t4eph/MG_1389.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/3zn1t4eph/) (http://s18.postimg.org/sdlc0rbsl/MG_1386.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/sdlc0rbsl/)

(http://s18.postimg.org/9mjeqlh85/MG_1388.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/9mjeqlh85/) (http://s18.postimg.org/shf5h0h9x/MG_1392.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/shf5h0h9x/)

Some quick observations:

The legends are super crisp, " and ? are legible -- well, with a lens ;)

The num-pad sticks out like a (very) sore thumb IMHO. The number keys are just fine, it's the other ones that have two major problems: 1. the light grey legends look out of place and 2. the legends should have been aligned to the lower left like everything else. Have to blame myself, didn't pay attention to that detail when there was a chance to fix it :(

The colors are a lot more subdued in the mockups (http://www.pimpmykeyboard.com/deals/the-galaxy-class-keyset/), not sure I like the baby blue, pink, blue, and purple. Was expecting grey-blue, rose-red, dark teal, and lavender. The set feels very toy-ish as-is IMHO :/

(And yes, I fixed the left/right keys after I took the pics ;) )

Is anyone having trouble with the stems? It's nothing major, but I noticed that my stabilizers were a little loose in a few of the stems, especially the spacebar. I'll probably shore these up with some modeling clay or something similar, though--NBD.

Costar inserts are usually loose in PBT DSA caps, just stick a small square of scotch tape on the insert before installing it. The Deck above uses Cherry stabs, no problems w/ this set :)

I ordered two blanks of the same color and so that'll work perfectly for now but it's pretty obvious with them all together, lol.

Anyway to report this or possibly get a replacement?

This is the first time I've order a keyset. :o

That's odd. Just email Signature Plastics and I'm sure they'll correct the error. sales@solutionsinplastic.com

If you don't get a reply after a few weekdays, post here again and we'll try to get their attention. :)

GREAT first key set, by the way.  :thumb:

Thanks for the kind words and support through this process, taylor, danielT, and everyone else! It has been a long hard process of taking the idea of LCARS and trying to express that in the fairly constrained medium of keycaps given the manufacturing constraints. However, with perhaps the slight exception of the numpad blue-dye disappointment, I'm very happy with the result. Regardless of how one feels about the inherent aesthetics of the set (your points are well taken, Grendel) unto itself, I think it's about as accurate to the colors and graphics of the original show that the tools and materials available to us made possible. In that regard, I feel like the set meets the goals of screen accuracy and subtlety that I set for it at the beginning—whether or not those are the goals everyone might choose—and I'm quite satisfied. I hope everyone ends up liking his or her set too.

Got my set yesterday! I just got the common set and the battle bridge set. Came in two separate bags. I quickly noticed I was missing the "W" from the battle bridge set.  :( It's supposed to have darker blue WASD keys but I only have ASD keys. The common set is complete.

That's odd. Email SP. There are lots of tiny keys flying around for something like this, so I'm not surprised that their fulfillment missed a few here and there. I'm sure this happens not infrequently and that they have a system to deal with it.

After TechKeys.us sells out their inventory, there will probably eventually be a second round. But go to TechKeys first, as it will be a fairly long time before any second round is available.

Mandatory got new keycaps pic.  Code Keyboard.

First impression really cool set, glad I got in on this group buy.  The colors are really nice, and the legends are crisp.  Looks better in person.  I shall be taking this to work to see how I get on with the dsa profile.

A few things could be improved.  Numberpad just doesn't go with the rest of the set.  Like someone else already said previously the light grey doesn't work and things would look better if everything was aligned lower right.  The larger keys, except the space bar for whatever reason, aren't very flat.  My right shift key is warped badly.

Where are you seeing 45% markup?
That would be $72 for a tsangan kit. #maths

edit for two reasons
one: if your **** is so warped it won't sit in the stabilizer inserts properly they will replace it.
two: cause I have an iso kit too. :) put it next to my grey debian swirls and be #RAREBALLER like clacks but cooler.

My right shift is pretty warped. And for some reason they put the wrong homing keys in my base set. Will have to sort this out.

Why, thanks. :) No good pointers, sorry -- I took the board to the porch late afternoon under a cloudy sky, no extra light was added :/ For in-door product photography I would start w/ two lamps left & right betw. the subject and the camera and see how that goes. I did a bit of post-processing w/ LightRoom on these (always take raw pictures ! ;) ) :

- white balanced to the 18% grey patch of the GretagMacbeth color chart
- lens profile correction active
- medium contrast tone curve
- exposure comp. to +.5 or so
- clarity (local contrast) set to 30
- sharpening to 55, mask to 70
- straightened and cropped
- export sharpening for screen, normal
- export re-size to 1024 on the short edge

Looking good on that Lightsaver  :thumb:

Only thing that kinda annoys me is the height difference of the legends on the numpad (backspace vs. div/multi/sub).

What was the reason behind that? I have to admit I didn't even notice it on the mockups, but directly next to the base set it looks a little off.

I haven't used my DAS keyboard in like 2 years, but thought the Galaxy Class Set would look great on it. I think the glossy surface of the case emphasizes the high tech look even more!

I really love how this set turned out. The legends look crisp and the warm colors simply look amazing in combination. It shows how much thought was put into the design. Thank you Norbauer for all the hours you put into research to give us the best possible design  :thumb:

I know how you feel, I would have regretted all my life missing this GB. Norbauer did a great job with this set  :thumb:. The legends are so crisp that you have the feeling that these are double shots and not dye subs. I have a different plan for this set and this keyboard, but after seeing how good they look together I must say this is my ultimate board.
And having ENGAGE on the Enter key is priceless  :thumb:

Thanks so much for the pics and kind words everybody! :D I'm very happy with how this set turned out.

Looks like TechKeys.us are sold out of most of the sets at this point, which I'll take as a good sign of the level of satisfaction.

I'm really pleased with the legend crispness and the muted colors. I personally am using the numpad on a separate number pad keyboard that is on the other side of my mouse along with a TKL keyboard. I think the nav wheel numpad looks best (and makes most sense) in that set up.

OK, folks. Galaxy Class Round 2 is here (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=67995.0), by popular demand from the members over at the MassDrop community. For those of you who have written me that you were sad you missed out on Round 1, now is your chance. :)

There have been some improvements this time, including the addition of the much-requested BLANKS set.

Please move any further discussion on the Round 2 set over to the thread linked above. We can leave this thread for questions and posts about Round 1.

I really like this set and if there is another sale in the future I will for sure be in it. It was unfortunate that my money is so slim right now. Great work though :thumb:
