60% pcb with arrows suggestion
« on: Thu, 25 January 2018, 18:20:47 »
Hello, I'm looking for a pcb with arrows in the bottom line (5 1u keycaps on the bottom row, at the right of the spacebar, vim style).

What pcb can you suggest?

I'd like something not too difficult to configure; if possible I'd like some leds on the bottom of the keyboard (not under the keycaps).

The DZ60 will be able to do that layout, and has RGB underglow that is quite nice.  Plus it's available now as opposed to waiting a few months for a group buy.

That DZ60 has so many holes

Slightly unrelated but does it not allow for standard ISO left shift area (1.25u then 1u)?  Seems a strange one to miss when the ISO enter is supported...

In the drawing they inverted the position of 1.25 shift and the 1 unit key, but it's compatible with 1.25 shift on the left plus a 1 unit key.

I've built a couple of DZ60s.  One of them did have a couple of minor defects, so you'll want to check it carefully.

I also have a couple of Banana Split 60 kits pre-ordered, which should be shipping pretty soon—and there will be extras for sale at thevankeyboards.com.  It's more expensive than the DZ60 but should be higher quality.

Incidentally, both of these boards also support split spacebars, which I am a fan of.  I don't even have arrow keys on mine, but I did this instead, and I like it pretty well…

Nice! What keycaps did you use for the spacebars? I see probably a g20 keycap in the middle.

Those are XDA spacebars.  They're available on AliExpress in a bunch of different sizes, but only in gray.

For my next build I'm going to give G20 profile a try for the whole thing, from end to end, and see how I like it.  However, I know that G20 is not always the most popular…

That is a pretty nice setup! although I'd probably have a hard time getting used to ESDF as my arrow cluster on a Fn layer. I mostly prefer 65% boards for the arrow cluster & a Delete key on the top layer (delete is the key I need to get into my mobo's BIOS). Then have gotten used either WASD or IJKL as my arrow cluster on the Fn layer with the couple 60% boards I got.

On topic I used a GazzeW66 PCB to achieve this layout in a 60% FF,

The only goofy thing about this layout is that I mapped the ? key to R Alt so I could have 1.75u R Shift instead of a 1u one. I find it it to actually be a more convenient & ergonomic position for the ? key since I very rarely use my R Alt but I don't know how well it would suit or feel to others. I believe I heard they are looking to do another run of these PCBs soon, although they are not as flashy as the DZ60 or Banana Split 60 PCBs. Mine just has white SMD LEDs for underglow & you can add per key LEDs if you wanted. All in all though I'm very happy with that build & it has stayed in my rotation since I built it, so I'd recommend the GazzeW66 PCB if they run again or you find one 2nd hand.

here's the DZ60 I just built.  I didn't split the left shift, but I have the delete key on the right, under the enter key (red 1u key).  Also with QMK, I have the right shift set as a dual role shift key.  If I tap it, I get the slash/question mark key, but if I hold it down, it becomes right shift.
