This place is lethal!
« on: Fri, 15 February 2013, 06:47:14 »
So I joined the forum about two weeks ago and in that time I've managed to spend around £150 and all I have to show for it is a KeyCool 87 and millions of keycap sets and customs which are hanging round because I have only one board to put them on....  :))

Does everyone have similar experiences or am I just doing it wrong?

You're doing it wrong! Once you spend over 1K, that's when you're successful on here!
Oh and have about 6+ boards and more cap sets than boards.

Definitely the same experience for me! Initially it seems worse as well because everything seems really good. After a while you do seem to get more selective, but there is still an awful lot of nice stuff to spend money on  :)

Similar experience here... I don't  like telling others how much I've spent and it's still not as much as some of you guys here. :p

Two months ago I was hesitating to click "Purchase" for a $35 ducky from pchome. One month ago I bought a Filco with the yao "**** this ****" face and a few days ago I bought a set of pbts for $35 with this thought in my mind: "OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH **** it's such an awesome price!!!!".
So yeah, I went retarded in less than two months. A price, which was big for a keyboard is now a pocket change for keycaps alone.

I know. But the switch from "keyboard for 35 bucks is expensive" to "35 for cosmetic change is nothing" is imho quite big for two months.

Don't worry so much. After some time, you'll become more selective, as Dgsbllx already mentioned. As long as you enjoy it, this will have lots of benefits, mostly allowing you to know yourself better. You can sell them back, if you give up. Maybe it's lethal, but nobody died yet.

It normally begins with...

wow, that looks interesting - > let me think about it - > oh, its just one more -> let's get it -> since we're down the rabbit hole anyway -> I GOTS TO KNOW!

after the final stage is reached, anytime something mildly keyboard shaped and sparkly comes along, the wallet opens up.

14 within a year. And I thought I was bad. Looks like I'm in good company.

My current Topre boards alone cost me $1000 altogether. In the past 2.5 years I've easily dropped $3k on keyboards, but I've sold a bunch too, so I have no idea what the total damage is.

Electronics are an expense.  I probably spend over $10/yr on PC parts & peripherals.

lol It's just that people have this backwards idea of electronics ever being a cheap hobby.  People will see that I probably spend over $10/yr on PC parts and go, "Pffttt of course you do!"

A console gamer friend of mine asked me once what it would take him to get into the PC gaming world for the next 4 years.  I showed him the minimum PC only sort of stuff without going nuts on peripherals and he told me if he was gonna spend that money it would be on something like an upgrade for a car stereo system.

Since that time he's been plodding along with his XB360 he got as a gift and asked me about the rumors of the next gen systems and how much they may cost.  He discounts my predictions and says something similar to what he said to the above...

Finally had to explain that the guy needs to understand that its obvious he's more into cars and stereos than anything else and until he gets a better job he should just come hang out more often and use my stuff provided he's polite about it.  Different folks different strokes.

Actually I haven't added up how much I have spent on keyboards.  Not as much as some people (wish I had that much disposable income), and I don't think I really want to know.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

I'm at around 1 year mark since I started this hobby.  Hasn't been too bad yet because I'm a bit selective also I'm trying to get 1 switch per board to be a bit economic  :)

At times I also get different switch than the one my g/f has so we get a bit more variety and spend less money lol.

Me:  Das MX Brown  ->  Filco MX Red  ->  Matias Quiet Pro (Where I'm at)  ->  Unicomp Ultra Classic  (Future) ->  Topre Realforce 104U (Future)

My g/f:  Das MX Blue  ->  Filco MX Red  ->  Matias Tactile Pro (Where she's at)  ->  Unicomp Spacesaver M (Future)  ->  HHKB (Future)

Though I did recently blow $200 on PBT Dyesub Keycaps from a group buy.  So I'm estimated at around $750 spent total now that's not bad at all  :P
