Title: Anyone knows what layout this is?
Post by: a490906 on Mon, 09 September 2013, 23:29:50
Hi all,

User had the original keyboard swapped in some obscure store. After formatting his computer, I cannot find what this layout is!

In Linux, there is a utility that asks you to press some keys, and then tells you what your keyboard layout is. I cannot find something similar on Windows.

Any help?

Thanks,

Simo

Looks like an azerty layout, mainly used in French.

Yes, this must be a French keyboard. Some of the keys have French translations on them, and the key next to W has guillemets, which are used as quotation marks in French.

It does look like french, but it isn't :

Looks like a modified version of Belgian french layout to me... The shifted numbers are the only real difference that I can see..

In case you are interested, it's very much possible to use a different layout in the system than the one printed on the keys. For example I use both Finnish and English US layouts on all my keyboards, whether they are actually Finnish layout or not. In Windows I switch with Alt-Shift between them. I prefer the symbol placement on English, but often have to use Finnish characters ä and ö when writing emails for instance.

For touch-typing you don't even need to look at what is printed on the keys (although I can't actually touch type myself).

I do know I can use a different layout. Thanks...  :)

However, that is not my computer and she would like to have the keys match the strokes... I guess that's not gonna work. For now, I just set it for her as a French keyboard.

Thanks to all who tried to help  ;)

there should be a few screws underneath that are labeled with little keyboard icons.
remove them and pop the keyboard out and leave the ribbon cable attached.
on the underside of the keyboard should be a sticker with the hp spare parts number.
google that number and it will tell you what it is.
