Turbo charging Ipad Mini Gen5? How many watts will it take?
« on: Sun, 15 September 2019, 07:31:55 »
I have an 18.8 watt charger that already cut the time down by an hour. AFAIK it cannot accept more than 20 watts? If that is the case, it makes no sense to spend $50 on a USB C charger than?
The Ipad Pro is indeed a very nice tablet but it is physically too large for my needs. Luckily with the Mini Gen5 they have put a fairly capable processor in it. Plus it has higher PPI but nothing like a phone. It suits me fine but I would like the fastest possible charging without wasting money or risking damaging it. Thank you

It is not that simple. The 5th gen iPad Mini still has a Lightning connector, not a Type C.

I read in a review that the iPad Mini should support some type of "fast charging", but that the included charger does not... The question is what kind of charging that actually is.
The official tech specs on Apple's web sites does not mention it. *sigh*

is this info not available online for your device? on tests with the iphone an 87w charger is only slightly faster than a 20w one. it's diminishing returns so i wouldn't recommend it since you're concerned about the price

A USB Type A connector is limited to a max of 2.7 amps, or about 18 watts, to go higher you have to eliminate that connector.

That being said, lipo cells actually do not like charging at more than 1 amp, we do it, but the harder you push them the shorter their lifespan, most packs are 12-18 volt, which works at to 2.7 amps @ 5 volts...  So anything more than a Type A connector is actually hurting your pack.

Some cells claim to handle more, however it's really a matter of tolerance, how long they can do it before degradation starts.

Yes, my understanding is it will not accept more than 20W but that was not entirely clear. Hence 87W barely charged faster than 30W. I think because of degradation and not being spec'd with USB-C 18W would be the safe limit? As it is that knocked an hour off the included 12W charger. I am pretty happy with that. I would prefer not to kill it. In fact, I do not think it will allow you to. Hence MFC. S10 and Note 10 have USB C and do not charge all that fast but do have larger batteries than the Mini as well. They do not use MFC but must employ some sort of protection I imagine. Otherwise if you just let 87W Mac charger go on the Mini it would likely explode. I was hoping for 30W but probably not possible. I doubt it will be any faster than 18W, so a waste of my money as I had figured. I am just guessing about 18-20W is the limit on it. I would be willing to try a 30W if anyone thinks it will accept it. It is about $50 so I do not want it to be useless though. Also, as stated more importantly I do not wish to kill it but I am pretty sure it is protected from overcurrent and overheat.

It will only pull what the system allows, provided they put a limit, this is the problem with type A to Type C cables.
I'm not sure about the Lightning connector but it is certainly below Type C which is around 300 watts.

It is nowhere close to 300 watts LOL. I am pretty convinced it is 20W but to be safe stick with 18W. Knocking off an hour is good enough for me. I am pretty sure 30W will charge no faster than 20W because it must be limited to 20W. That is my conclusion thus far.
