Interested in a G80-1800?
« on: Tue, 19 January 2010, 02:54:41 »
Today Tipro (http://www.tipro.si/) sent me a response to my enquery, stating that they have some Cherry G80-1800LPCEU-2 on stock for 79,00 EUR + DDV (DDV=20%), which would equal 136,5 USD. But in the same mail, some rabate was mentioned:

1 to 5 -- 10%
6 to 15 -- 15%
16 to 25 -- 20%
26 to 35 -- 25%
>35 -- 30%

Anyone interested? Although I think it is a little pricy, especially if you take in account the shipping (mine is just a few EUR, as I'm in the same country)

Two questions:

-What color switches do they have?
-Is the layout ANSI?

If the answers to these two questions are "brown" and "yes," I'm interested.

Looking at my model number for my G80-3000, I bet these 1800s have black switches.  It's hard to tell on the layout though.

This is the exact layout. I'm not sure about the switches. And I asked them just that... did not reply yet.

The layout works for me.  I guess we'll just wait to find out about the switches.

LPCEU has black switches. Not plate mounted, easy to mod.

For $130, I'm going to hold out for browns.  I would have modded one of the keyboards from the lot on eBay.de but not one of these.  For a few more dollars, there are the ones with brown switches, a USB hub and "NKRO" (however they define that).

That image isn't a g80-1800 layout either.  You might like to confirm if they have the model number wrong, or sent you the wrong drawing.

Is the one they are selling the new version (with windows keys) or possibly the older one without windows keys? If there are no windows keys I might be interested.

The nubs are called "Fühlbalken" in Cherry speak. :-)

But ecru is right, that's a 3000 or similar layout, not an 1800.

Could someone roughly translate for the dumb American?  Google chokes on it.

A direct translation could be "feel bar", or even "sense scantling", maybe. Just sounds odd.
It sounds like an awkward attempt to invent some German technical word for something that doesn't need a technical word.

Feel beam?

A "Balken" usually means this:

OK, that makes sense.  I see them working.  Overworking, that is.  "Nubs" is good enough.

This invariably leads to the question how Cherry calls center-dot nubs
and curved F/J-keys.

This model is equipped with Windows keys.

Maybe I was a little optimistic, when I thought it was easy to gather a large enough number of orders, to get some significant rabate. :)

One thing you'll learn about GH is that it's very difficult to get a consensus on anything. Other sites, like AVSForum, have an easier time setting up things like "power buys" as they either have enough user-base that they can get enough people to buy even if said item has limited appeal, or they offer power-buys on products everyone likes. We certainly don't have the first, and there hasn't been a product, yet, that the majority of members can get behind, so I wouldn't be suprised or hurt if you can't get the interest you're looking for.

Starting to realise that, yeah.

Now even I am not so sure I'd like to spend so much money for the blacks.

Group buy for Unicomp to re-produce IBM Industrial-colored keyboard enclosures, if not complete keyboards?  I wonder what it would take for Unicomp to do a custom color run of Customizer 104/105 cases...

That would be interesting. They would have to lose that lame graphic on the lock lights for it not to look silly, though. Even so, if I were still using Model Ms, I would be in for one anyway. I could deal with the logo.

They (still?) have a logo-less cover on the black Eudorapro, so that might work.  IBM Industrial color Customizer with blank black keys and solid black LED area.  Unicomp even produced an Industrial version of the M13/Eudorapro at one point in the past.

I don't understand why they don't put a middle click on the Endurapro.

Because that would require a new Trackpoint pcb, a new mouse switch pcb and new mouse button molds.

This and a good understanding of Unicomp's business practices.
