Last February, Trump issued an executive order declaring that, essentially, he is the law:
“No employee of the executive branch acting in their official capacity may advance an interpretation of the law as the position of the United States that contravenes the President or the Attorney General’s opinion on a matter of law.”

Trump has previous years refused to hold the otherwise traditionally yearly press dinner because he despises press that he can't control. The shooting was at the beginning of the event. How convenient. Now he can claim that he held it but had a good excuse to abort it, while making everyone attending feel less secure.
And what a convenient excuse this could be for imposing more stringent security, and thus more armed guards and whatnot. Remember that more armed thugs and more militarisation is classic fascist MO.
