Title: [IC] Smart 68 Keyboard Set (GB is live)
Post by: feng on Wed, 13 August 2014, 00:35:56
GB link: https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=83442.0

We've come to the conclusion that we'll be providing three layouts for this keyboard as shown below. The only difference between these three layouts is the bottom row. Please keep in mind that the 6x spacebar in layout #2 isn't that hard to find. It comes in most of the full thick PBT keyset I have for sale on geekkeys.com, as well as most  Gateron keysets. I can also source some PBT 6x spacebar in many colors if necessary.

1. 1.5x, 1.25x, 1.5x, 6.25x, 1.25x, 1.25x, 1.0x, 1.0x, 1.0x
2. 1.5x, 1.0x, 1.5x, 6x, 1.5x, 1.5x, 1.0x, 1.0x, 1.0x
3. 1.5x, 1.5x, 7x, 1.5x, 1.5x, 1.0x, 1.0x, 1.0x

VOTE HERE (https://docs.google.com/forms/d/18I626EUHTvlP_NR_wtrk123NMjrPKQikJ1WLsXHf7SU/viewform?c=0&w=1)

We'll need you to vote which type of carbon fiber plates you'd prefer for layout #2 and #3, as we'll decide which type of plate we're gonna produce. If you like layout #1, you don't need to vote. If the vote is like 50/50, we'll make two different plates for layout #2 and #3. If it's not, we'll consider making a compatible plate that fits both layout as shown in the 2nd attachment below (the bottom row is separete from the main plate, and it can be installed individually).

Here's a video showing the firmness of switch (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_P7iBCCO-cI&feature=youtu.be)

DeeLonG has been preparing for this Smart 68 keyboard set for almost two years. Another product from him would be his aluminum keychain that I introduced to GH about one and a half years ago. Here's the link: http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=38841.0
[attach=1][attach=2][attach=3][attach=15]

The most important selling point for this keyboard: hot-plugging (hot swapping). No soldering needed at all. You can install any MX switches to the PCB slots, and you can change the MX switches anytime you want even while it’s still connected to the computer. After countless testing, you don’t need to worry about their firmness. Once the MX switch is properly installed, it fits stably on the slot. LEDs are hot swappable as well.
[attach=4][attach=5][attach=6]

Another selling point is the carbon fiber plate which goes on the PCB. Carbon fiber is really strong and more flexible than other materials used for keyboard plates such as aluminum, steel, stainless steel, etc. It also provides a new typing experience that you’ve probably never felt before.
[attach=7][attach=8][attach=9]

It's also  fully programmable. Instructions will be posted once the group buy starts.

Personally I really like the size of 60% keyboards, but there’s just one important thing missing – arrow keys. You don’t really need them a lot, but once a while they just become essential to use. That’s how the producer came up with the current layout – 68-key. He adds arrow keys and some function keys into the regular 61-key layout.
[attach=10][attach=11]

Here’s a list showing the length of some keycaps
Spacebar - 6.25x
Left Ctrl – 1.5x
Left Win – 1.25x
Left Alt – 1.5x
Right Alt – 1.25x
Right Ctrl – 1.25x
Right Shift – 1.75x

Capslock – you can choose between regular capslock and stepped capslock
[attach=12]

In the upper right area, the positions of backspace and “~`” key can be switched to the way you prefer.
[attach=13][attach=14]

The FN key was placed on the front side of the keyboard in order to allow your thumb switch faster between FN and spacebar.
[attach=15][attach=16]

Finally, the group buy price for this keyboard set will be around $300.

What’s included:
Aluminum case
PCB
Carbon Fiber Plate
Stabilizer Set

Please post in this thread if you’re interested or you have any suggestions.

I like the concept of the folding feet. Not something I've seen in a 60%. I'd probably be down for one. I love the carbon fiber plate and the hot swap option is an amazing feature.

I like all the features but the layout is pretty much exactly what Kaliet's 22mini-ex is.  Heh.  That fn key...I can't tell if I'd like it or if it'd bug me with its placement.  I'd still be interested, most likely.  For me, this is the perfect board size.

Interesting! Does the FN key also use a Cherry switch? Was the plate also cut on finished carbon fibre, or was it glazed again with resin after the switch cuts?

Assuming the hot swapable switches are like SIP sockets on a PCB, and that switches should still be removable by hand-- How do the switches stand up to swapping out keycaps? Would the switch get pulled out with the keycaps (especially tighter fitting ones like DSA on MX Clear)?

And if I had my board upside-down and gave it a little jostle, would they come lose?
Also, how rigid will the carbon fibre be? Bendable? Still heavy?

Also, is backspace splitable?
Can we move it back in line with the rest of the mods and put tilde on the far right?

A suggestion for the FN key -- would it be possible to have it aligned with the spacebar? It may not be in the centre of the case, but the staggered alignment with the spacebar seems awkward IMO.

this is pretty cool. I remember the thread when the concept was introduced some time ago. Glad to see it has come to fruition.

I'm going to assume the space bar is 6.75x?

The bottom row having a mix of both 1.5x and 1.25x is a little iffy but given today's many group buys it should be easier to source a matching set. I also agree it would be visually cleaner if the FN lined up with the space bar.

I like this, it's like a compact 75%. I may get one in the far future. The carbon fiber plate is a nice cherry-on-top too.

Interesting! Does the FN key also use a Cherry switch? Was the plate also cut on finished carbon fibre, or was it glazed again with resin after the switch cuts?

No the FN key uses a micro switch (usually used on mouse). The plate was cut on finished carbon fiber.

Assuming the hot swapable switches are like SIP sockets on a PCB, and that switches should still be removable by hand-- How do the switches stand up to swapping out keycaps? Would the switch get pulled out with the keycaps (especially tighter fitting ones like DSA on MX Clear)?

The switches are not removable by hand, you'll have to use a tool. Therefore they won't get pulled out with the keycaps.

And if I had my board upside-down and gave it a little jostle, would they come lose?
Also, how rigid will the carbon fibre be? Bendable? Still heavy?

Also, is backspace splitable?
Can we move it back in line with the rest of the mods and put tilde on the far right?

They won't come lose that easily. The carbon fiber is not bendable, it's really strong. The backspace is splitable, check the 2nd picture carefully (where it says In the upper right area, the positions of backspace and “~`” key can be switched to the way you prefer.) and you'll see the tilde key is located on the far right.

A suggestion for the FN key -- would it be possible to have it aligned with the spacebar? It may not be in the centre of the case, but the staggered alignment with the spacebar seems awkward IMO.

That sounds a really good idea. Unfortunaly the producer said we're not able to change the location of the FN key. It's not easy to do. However he said it doesn't affect the efficiency of using the key even though it's not aligned with the spacebar.

this is pretty cool. I remember the thread when the concept was introduced some time ago. Glad to see it has come to fruition.

The spacebar is standard 6.25x

Same here, Feng you've done it again here.  Definitely will be buying one to add to my collection  :thumb: .

I think this will be the FIRST keyboard to fit into the casing itself, a real FN key actuation, which is truly untold  :o .  This makes it a unique keyboard about to be sold here on Geekhack, please make it happen soon.

I'm still working on it. I think I'll let Massdrop handle this group buy since the factory requires 100 pcs MOQ and it's hard for me to make it happen on my own. If everything goes well, we might be able to see the group buy starting in 3 weeks.

Sad about the fn key being centered on the case instead of in line with the space bar, but that's okay.
Sorry I missed the picutre and comment about the layout, too excited for the board.  :-[
About the colors: I doubt we could make MOQ on funky colors, not everyone wants vibrant. [unless MOQs were much smaller than the board itself]
I had something else to say but I'm very tired.
Take my money.

edit: is it possible to have 3 1u keys where backspace is? or one has to be 2u?
Title: Re: [IC] Smart 68 Keyboard Set
Post by: geniekid on Wed, 13 August 2014, 10:29:34
I think a 60% layout would be better for this board.  Why not take advantage of the super accessible Fn key?  Fn+IJKL is the perfect replacement for the arrow keys.  It seems a shame to make this keyboard wider for dedicated navigation keys when the great Fn placement is begging to be used instead.

With regard to hot swappable/solderless switches,  :thumb: :thumb: :thumb:

Final question,
is it all programmable-- Can I change those fn keys under delete to pg up/pg dwn?
Can I split back space to two 1u keys?
I think I'm sold.

I really like the idea of this but won't likely be able to afford it for a while.

Defiantly needs to be fully programmable I for one would reperpus the entire nav cluster and replace Caps Lock with a FN layer if possable. It's not the best for everyone, but for me having FN instead of capslock is working great on my Poker II.

Omg, this is my next board! (and more if it can do more

1)
So, with the layouts. I see the bottom row has
1.5, 1.25, 1.5, 6.25, 1.25, 1.25, (arrows 1, 1, 1)

In another photo with the screen in it
1.25, 1.25, 1.25, 6.75, 1.25, 1.25, 1.25, (arrows 1, 1, 1)
With the difference being the larger spacebar and the extra modifier on the right.

a) Is this layout possible too? or it is only a developmental example.
b) does the PCB support multiple bottom row layouts? and what can it support?) -
c) Is there a photo of the (final) PCB, which should answer the above 2 questions.

2) Remapping support - will it support remapping the Fn Key to any of the conventional keys?

3) You said the Fn button was a momentary tactile button (conventional mouse type). Will this be soft enough to press without moving the keyboard along the table?

Title: Re: [IC] Smart 68 Keyboard Set
Post by: qwack on Thu, 14 August 2014, 07:34:43
Awesome concept. The full set will be too expensive for me (I'd gladly have taken one PCB and perhaps a plate, although I'm not too fond of carbon fiber), but I hope you'll be able to reach the MOQ. This project really deserves it.

I've been using custom footprints for IC pads on PCB to allow for easy hot-swapping without a socket for a while, but it looks like you brought it to the next level. I'd be curious to know what kind of inserts you are using, but I understand if it's something you don't want to talk about too much  ;D In any case, I love the fact that with your system, switches can easily be removed with an IC extractor.

Also, what kind of control will the user have over backlighting — how many levels of brightness, setting saved when powered off/on?

Wow, this looks fantastic, definitely interested, physical build looks close to perfect!

That being said, I'd definitely want to be able to customize the layout in a lot of ways (caps->ctrl or fn, windows key to fn, being able to customize the fn layer). Programmable would be great, but firmware customizability would be even better.

THIS!

1.5 1.5 7 1.5 1.5 1 1 1 for life

But... how will I do Win+L and Win+R?   :-[

I have never found a need for right ctrl or right alt to exist, so I would make one of those an fn key and the other the win key.

In the above, hyper would be win and code would be fn.

It makes win+E a bit more awkward, but I'm okay with that.

Exactly. I just two hand most win combos now. No problem really, left hand is always over there anyway. :P

Have one of them as a hidden windows key! CTRL ALT space WIN (CTRL/ALT/MENU/FN)
Your keyboard has never looked prettier! [I use win+E all the time, R, didn't know about L!]

So you're saying I should trade a 2-key combo for a 4-key combo?

You're not a big fan of efficiency I take it?  ;D

Yeah, maybe.  I don't really use the R-Alt or R-Ctrl.  Would make Win+L a lot easier, but shifts the hand acrobatics over to Win+R.  Not sure how I feel about two-handing a Win+R combination.  I'd have to try it.

I'm sorry, four key combo? It's still just win+r.
I'm saying remove the superfluous 1.25 mods [right win, right ctrl, right alt]
I wrote (CTRL/ALT/MENU/FN) to mean your last 1.5 mod could be whatever you wanted.
On a tkl you don't need FN.
As Hoff pointed out, r-Alt and r-Ctrl are nearly useless.
And I personally don't use the menu key, but some people might.

OK, I totally misunderstood what you were suggesting.  When you said a hidden Windows key, I thought you were saying it could be the spacebar and Ctrl+Alt+Space would simulate the Win key.  That would make Win+R (for example) a 4-key combo.

Thanks for clearing it up for me.

I am relieved to see that it is a 68key.

Please continue making small keyboards, Feng.

As long as it doesn't offer enough keys (functionality) for me, I will not spend my $300. Whew.

otherwise the design features are too awesome to miss. I'd be overspending as usual...

I almost can't imagine spending that much on a keyboard, but then I read the description again, and I can't imagine not getting this. Consider me very interested. I've been looking for a 60%-ish layout + arrow keys that is both aesthetically appealing and customizable. You are making all my dreams come true.

Absolutely stunning design, and a 60% layout that is both sensible, familiar and useful for those who rely heavily on home, end, delete and arrow keys. This is the best 60% board I've ever seen and I want one now, gorramit!

Would love a PCB mount version with a PCB flush case, and the ability to use 1.25x modifiers on the left so as to have room for 3 1x modifiers on the right with a standard size spacebar. Otherwise this is perfect.

I think the key of solder-free pcb is these little guys, shouldn't be hard if we had anybody doing this in GB so we could buy and put into our own keyboard (we already had hot-swapable led now, just the sw pin that need making)

I think there are two good reasons for it.

2-I think it looks pretty awesome

Perhaps there is also something to do with the actual hot swapping?

I'm still working on it. I think I'll let Massdrop handle this group buy since the factory requires 100 pcs MOQ and it's hard for me to make it happen on my own. If everything goes well, we might be able to see the group buy starting in 3 weeks.

Thinking about the Fn key location (on a lateral aspect), it makes more sense where it is now, than the supposedly aesthetically balanced position aligned to the spacebar. Alignment vs symmetry to the case.

The left thumb rests within the left side of the spacebar, and the right thumb will require more reach than the , key when reaching the far top right hand corner of the keyboard. Aesthetics aside, the functionality of its location is where its beauty is at.

On another thought, I would still much prefer to have the option to move the fn key to the normal switches. Using a wrist rest would make the current side FN a difficult button to reach!

The video showing the switch insertion, keycap removal and fn key pressing, seems to suggest that the fn key is lighter than a conventional tactile mouse switch, more more like a longer throw microswitch?? If you had pictures of the actual switch used, or its implementation, it would be nice.
Secondly, the video shows a case that has 4 rubber feet, and no extendable legs.

I am waiting for this board to become reality! I want two right now :(  (and I have put off buying any more 60% boards in expectation of this one becoming real)

What are the color options? Would love something more than the typical black, red, grey or silver. Would love some more vibrant options.

We don't know yet what colors wil be available. I hope there're more vibrant options too. Like blue, purple, orange, green? :D

Any of those would be awesome! Very excited for this!

Any idea how long till a GB would be possible to start?

I'm still working on it. I think I'll let Massdrop handle this group buy since the factory requires 100 pcs MOQ and it's hard for me to make it happen on my own. If everything goes well, we might be able to see the group buy starting in 3 weeks.

How accurate is this at the moment? Is it looking likely that a GB of this be released this week on massdrop? Because I can't wait any longer for this  ;D

Also a few questions.
1. Are there any plans to sell the carbon fibre plate separately? (thinking of getting an extra plate depending on price/ shipping cost)
2. What's the situation with the case? Will there be choice of different colored cases?
3. Following question 2, will there be different colored choices for the FN button

Still trying to get things work with Massdrop. But I don't know for sure yet. They need a sample first before doing the group buy, but we won't be able to get a sample until the next round of production is done in at least 1-2 months. If they can't do the group buy without a sample, I will consider running a GB here on GH for the first round.

Hahahaha... I think I am already mentally preparing to buy all three....

Interesting to note - MicroUSB - I will need to be getting more cables or change it to miniUSB, but I think the pads are not compatible?
Also trying to work out what the round hole in the case is, under the space bar. Access to the PCB for something...

A BIG question that remains unanswered, is - Can the FN be re-programmed to any other key?

And will there be a different bottom row layout options?

I personally would Love to see the following, but I would imagine that there would not be much demand for it. As a OSX user, the following wolud be nice...

1-1-1-1.25-6.25-1-1-1-1-1

Hot swappable LEDs, but I wonder how the current to the LED is managed. In a conventional voltage controlled output we need different resistors for different voltage drop LEDs otherwise brightness will not be appropriately matched.

For a given resistance, a red LED will be over drive, while a white one might be very dim if it lights up at all. Unless it has a constant current drive, or a swappable resistor too.

I'm just speculating here too, lets see how it pans out when it happens :)

AFAIK, MD limitations are based on their need for working sample. As this board hasn't reached manufacturing yet, a sample was not possible according to feng, therefore its of higher likelihood that the first run is not going to be MD.

We just need to wait for news about where this is going. Either way… theres going to need to be a lot of money ready

Please post in this thread if you’re interested or you have any suggestions.

I love this design, as well as the Matias 60% design. Will this keyboard support the Matias switches? I'm not clear on that compatibility question yet.

I love how you use the previously-unused FRONT of the keyboard by the space bar. Ingenius and I think this may be copied more in the future, but it adds no volume but lots of functionality.

The aluminum looks amazing. It and the carbon fiber SEEM totally unnecessary, but also seem totally awesome.

I strongly suggest you apply your work to a higher-volume lower-cost version after this group buy. This synergy will allow you to make more money and gain more influence among the peasants. Soon we will all be chanting your song.  Don't let your work go to waste -- bring it to as many people as possible, but in a different way.

I have a question about keyboard technology which has probably been asked a million times on this forum. Since you've got fully custom firmware anyway, why can't you make the "Shift" key modify the PgUp+PgDn buttons into Home+End? Etc. I'm a newbie, but it seems strange to me to have modifiers already present on the keyboard (shift, ctrl, alt) and yet they're unused. If we're improving the old key layout, can't we improve the old modifiers too?

The groupbuy just ended on the Chinese keyboard forum enjoyclick on 09/20 I believe.

GB thread here I believe:

http://www.enjoyclick.org/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=7602&extra=page%3D1

My gf isn't around, and I'm on my work computer, so I can't easily translate the Chinese, so I'm not 100% sure that this is the GB thread. I think it is though.

Which means we might be able to get a physical sample organised for the western mass drop at some stage in the not to distant future, I'm hoping…

Appears that the GB has 2 PCB options - with or without the hot swappable, and 2 different layout options for the CF plate. There were a few colour options, but I don't have an account, so I can't see the pictures that I would guess stipulate the differences.

The price is very reasonable too. Basically exactly $200 USD, which for this board, is amazing.

Can't wait to see if anybody on here can get a physical sample to MassDrop, or possibility rerun the group buy here.

DeelonG did a great job on the board, and hopefully we can get him to run it over here as well.

How's the production of these keyboards going along, are you guys close to sending massdrop a sample? Or are you leaning towards a GH GB for R1.

Not sure if anyone saw or read this but MassDrop has been working on getting a GB started for the Smart68 but the factory that produced the Chinese group buy apparently doesn't exist anymore.

So.... there's more work to be done to get this in production for us outside of China...

That's a real shame to hear =(

I wonder what the biggest issues are for the production of this.

Is it the carbon fibre plate or the PCB?

Is it the carbon fibre plate or the PCB?

I believe it's neither.

Two main issues I see now...

They need to first get a sample of the keyboard sent to their offices in California (with the original factory out of the picture, this is not as simple as asking for a production sample). I doubt any of the buyers in the original GB would be willing to part with their keyboards for the sake of us not in the PRC.

The only way around this would be if the designer or Feng had a production sample and could ship it to MD.

I'm not sure if MD has managed to get a production sample yet but let's assume they have one right now.

Then they need to find a factory to actually produce the boards for a GB on MassDrop.

This essentially means, where two weeks ago, it was almost certain that a GB would happen soon in the US because there was a factory ready to produce the board (machinery and tooling and logistics ready to go to production), there is no such factory now and so that takes the GB back a few steps.

This keyboard looks so promising but in my opinion it might be doubtful that a drop would happen for us as soon as we had originally anticipated.

There's that and the fact that MassDrop now has the Infinity Keyboard to build upon.

Is there really any specific tooling involved? Excuse my naivety to manufacturing processes, but apart from the PCB and the aluminium CNC pattern, the only main part that could require less-standard tooling could be the brass inserts and its insertion process? (if there are any for the switches/LEDs)

Well heres hoping that its as simple as that, because I would imagine that the rest of the PCB should be fairly normal to manufacture, and the CNC case should also be manufacturable as per most cases that we already have. It's a matter of having access, limited or otherwise, to the design files.

Yes. Definitely possible.

But whoever ends up running the GB will have to comb through the countless electronics factories in China to find one that can produce the board for a price low enough that enough people will join to meet MOQ.   :-[

In terms of aesthetics, I absolutely agree with you. Through a business perspective, that metal plate that serves as the feet (in some layouts) is really genius for saving money and resources. But still, I didn't buy it and most likely won't unless its PCB only.

They offered just the PCB and normal plate to use with other cases in the initial group buy.

There was no need to buy the bent frame/case.

No =[

I mean anything is possible with enough money I have to consider what will be the most popular without creating a whole new product (since that would require a new set of tools and such)

From what I read so far, the manufacturer is testing hot swapping on one of their current models. So hopefully if they can streamline the entire group buy or w.e we could get the price down.

The 68% is really the first compact idea that I've seen that I feel would be really usable for me (the 660 form factor is close, but just not quite there). As long as the controller on this is programmable (and hot swap switches/leds? WHAAAAAT?), I would buy this in a heartbeat.

Although they did have a very limited run on some asian forum (I can't recall the name sorry). You're only chance to ever get this would probably if someone who was in the limited run GB decided to sell theirs, but that is very unlikely.

I might have to do this along with DeeLong. Massdrop says they don't have the confidence to do the group buy yet since it's a new product. They might consider in the future if a GB on GH goes well.

How hard it's to get he keycaps set that fits this keyboard?

This is one of the most beautiful boards I've seen.  If I had the money, I'd be all over this when it becomes available.  But I do have reservations about the function bar.  I have large hands and I find it a bit awkward to put my thumbs on the side of my keyboard case and reach my fingers beyond the home row.  Still, it's a really nice board.

Very easy, most new keysets have a short shift.

You can also put a FN key on a regular switch.

Quick message about this before i leave town again for work and won't have a computer.

My theory on how this works is with the use of something like this. https://www.mill-max.com/new_products/detail/2
Now obviously these need to be large enough to fit the switch pins but also small enough to fit the PCB holes, now these specific mill-max through hole sockets have a lip on this which i think is a good idea but leaves less room for tolerances as i think the fatter lip part should fit INTO the PCB holes to make the switch side of the PCB perfectly flush rather than having the lip sit above it, by having this lip here it'll hopefully leave a little crevice where solder can help make the connection between the PCB and socket.

Now this will also have to be plate mounted so that the switches will "lock" in place which makes it removable as well so the plate can't be thicker than 1.5mm or will have to have the lock points milled out like GON plates.

Unfortunately i don't have time to explain more but hopefully this is enough information for someone to work with and test since there's many people here smarter than i.

explain it to me easily, i don't understand this too much.

thanks.

Socket connectors are used in the circuit board for the connections instead of soldering! Because sockets are used, that means you can change them at any time. The same applies to the MX switches with this board.

Hello,

I'm a new member who was previously very interested in buying Pok3r but now this.  :p
Just curious if I buy this I would need to buy my own Cherry MX switches and LEDs as well as keycaps?

Can anyone confirm that installation or learning to put together a keyboard especially this one without soldering is not too complicated?
As in you just have to carefully place the right components into the right sockets?

Cheers All and can't wait!

Too bad that the bottom row is non standard. Plus I'm not sure about the carbon fiber plate. I've only seen one group buy with carbon fiber plates
If you make the switches removable using sip sockets, how many insertions can they stand? I'm asking that because it seems that to remove on switch, you actually need to open completely the keyboard and detach all the switches?

In addition, how secure are the LEDs and would it be a problem if they are lose and hit the bottom of keycaps to reduce their lifespan?

Title: Re: [IC] Smart 68 Keyboard Set (updated LED swapping video)
Post by: KHAANNN on Wed, 22 July 2015, 18:16:14
the firmware for this keyboard would need some serious debouncing logic tho

I sometimes use cables instead of switches to test pcb's, if the firmware doesn't handle debouncing well, a manual connection generally registers 4-5 characters
Since there is no solder involved with this keyboard, loose switches could cause the same issues

Quick Question:
Is it possible to program the smart68 into an ISO version? Or is it possible to have ISO out of the box?
What about transportability? This is so perfect to take it with you, will the hot swapple switches and LEDs take any damage whatsoever if put into a normal case in your bag?
What about ordering just specific parts of this board? Like only the PCB or no casing/no carbon fibre and stuff?
Is it possible to get the PCB schematics? Like the GH60 rev.c when it finally gets shipped?

I'm really so into this, but this kind of pricetag just kills me everytime I look it up  :'(

This is the first custom board I might get so I'm still quite inexperienced with boards I have to assemble myself. Because of this I have two questions:

Do I basically only need switches and keycaps (and maybe LED's) or is there something else I will need? And is there any soldering left for me to do or is it just plugging and screwing together stuff?

If I remember correctly it should be plugging/screwing it together. Switches, LEDs and stuff can be plugged in without soldering as you can see in the video in the first post.

Also, is there any hope of getting the Massdrop buy to include an optional LED set? Obviously listing every type of switch or keycap is useless, but just a good multicolor or even just white LED set?

I might have to do this along with DeeLong. Massdrop says they don't have the confidence to do the group buy yet since it's a new product. They might consider in the future if a GB on GH goes well.

Here you go guys and gals. He also said he would run this GB in August so we still have some time.

Massdrop isn't great and it showed recently with the TA buy.  I really don't want to see them running something like this.

Excuse the dumb question but what would be the difference in a Massdrop group buy compared to one that is run somewhere else? As someone who never participated in something like this I'm really curious! I only saw some of the shipping problems with some MD stuff on reddit, is there another upside on a group buy run via GH?

It's far better to use MassDrop. They're a company with a reputation beyond these forums and a vested interest in keeping their customers happy. Obviously I'm new here, and you guys might have excellent experiences with Feng, but to me he's just an anonymous user on an internet forum who, if this happens, wants me to send him 300 USD plus postage, without giving me any guarantee that I get anything in return.

Ask yourselves, would you trust me with your 300 USD, or would you prefer Massdrop?

Would I trust you, no, but that is because I don't know you. And I don't mean that as any kind of knock against you. Would I trust Feng? Yes. In fact, I'd much prefer this be run on GH than on MD. MD says they are all about community, but in practice they are more about business. I'm not saying that isn't their right, or that they are doing something wrong. I'm just saying that I think there is real benefit to having a real community focused group buy. I'd love to see this go through without MD involvement.

No, I don't. I'm okay with that. Sometimes you gotta take a little risk. If that is too much for someone, and I understand that it very well may be, that is unfortunate for them, cause this could be something great. I don't mean to be dismissive, because I do understand what you are saying. However, if there is a feeling it won't meet MOQ without MD, then certainly MD is a viable and good solution. But if it can be done without that platform then I think it should be.

In the end each buyer will have to decide for themselves. And in a forum such as this, if Feng was dodgy everyone would know it. But I think Massdrop is a far better option for most GBs. If MD said no, which it seems like it did, then that obviously changes things, but I still like MD.

Of course, if there were more GB sites out there so that MD got some competition, that would be even better. Free market and all that capitalist propaganda ;)

Same.  They have really done a piss poor job listening to the keyboard community lately.

@tofgerl - Nobody's forcing you to join the group buy.  If you have a problem you're welcome to wait on Massdrop for a (possible) Round 2.  It takes some big ****ing balls to come on here and your first post is questioning the reputation of a long-time member.  WTF dude?

Heyyy, whoa whoa.  No need to get hostile with a newbie asking perfectly fair questions.  When I was new I was hesitant to send hundreds of dollars to someone I just met on the internet.  It's a perfectly natural concern.  We know feng's reputation, but someone new to the forum does not, and we can't hold that against them.

I also don't know feng, but heard a lot about him being a long-time member here and putting up GBs successfully and all. But at first I would like to hear about what is up with the GB, if August is still viable and if the GB starts how many would want the smart board as I think this is a great board for what I have seen so far.

Of course, I also am reserved doing this here rather than on MD as I am still a beginner / newbie in the mech board scene (don't know feng at all despite hearing a lot) and 300 USD is a pretty hefty pricetag, though I partially can understand why that is. And seeing the GH60 GB going such a long strech with the PCBs, Cases etc. I'm a little more scared, though I know that a GB probably always will be behind some timetable which is perfectly fine. Another example why I also am a reserved is the TaiHao GB as it looked like the money was gone and stuff and fortunately the GB runner picked it up and got it going again.
I am not trying to say that GB runs are bad or anything, I don't mind spending a small amount if there is a risk of losing it. I only find the pricetag for this particular board pretty high (for myself). And to finally get to the point, I'm sorry I'm a little tipsy, I would like some kind of assurance or so? Is it possible if at all?
Maybe telling or seeing some GB experiences from the past feng ran would lighten up the concerns and apparently the offense on fengs reputation?

I don't know, I just know I want this board badly.

Maybe just as an update concerning when the GB will happen:
I messaged feng a few days ago and asked some stuff including when the buy will go live. He said it will most likely still be August but he wants to launch the POM Jelly group buy first.

Just wanted to share that information with you guys because this thread got no official reply concerning that for quite some time.

I just want to point out that my point wasn't about Feng at all. In fact, the only reason I mentioned him was because he was organizing this particular GB. My point was about Massdrop and why many people would presumably be far more likely to buy the board if the GB was organized through them.

Even if you did I sort of doubt that international shipping is an option.  These are usually run through an English-speaking proxy for shipping.

I've been pretty interested in this board since I saw it on a poll at Massdrop. All the space savings of a 60%, but with arrow keys. Which raises a question: will a standard order of keycaps fit this board? I love my FC660m, but dealing with the spacebar and right shift changes is a pain.

There are options listed at 1400 yuan on the Taobao link a few posts up.  That's only about $219 US.  The most expensive option I see is 1700 yuan, which is roughly $266 US.  Figure about $30 for shipping and it might be possible to get one of these shipped for less than $300.  That's a steal considering what you get, and almost $100 cheaper than many Korean customs.  Not bad.

Well buying the 1400 kuai one is probably not worth it because it lacks the hot swapping feature and all the hot swapping ones cost 1700 kuai which I think is only worth it if you order it in China. Anyway I consider not joining the drop right now because I might me in China soon an then buying it there would save me lots of taxes :)

Taobao is under the Alibaba empire, so the site is definitely legit, but that's like saying eBay is legit - the actual auction is still highly dubious.

However, these pictures look AOK to me. I wouldn't buy it since there's going to be a GB soon, but honestly, if that falls through, I might hazard it...

I second that, would be nice to know.

I can see that you could code the ISO layout yourself as this is fully programmable (right?). It only depends if the PCB layout is compatible, doesn't it?

Tight tolerances on the SIP sockets on the PCB. If Gaterons have looser tolerance than cherry switches, or they move pins around by fractions of a millimeter you may not get the contact you need for a working switch. It depends on how much variance the sockets allow.

Symmetry! My vote goes for 7u spacebar / WKL layout.

Considering that center stemmed 6u spacebar only exists via enjoypbt/Gateron's 6u new center-stemmed spacebar, it would be hard or even impossible to find other high-quality aftermarket caps. I don't see why 6u bottom row is even offered at all. It should only be option #1 and #3.

If the third layout gets selected then I might join this buy.
Why have 1.25 mods if I need a tsangan set anyway for those two 1.5 mods?
It doesn't matter if most people have 6.25u spacebars. They would get a 7u spacebar with the tsangan sets they have to buy for this regardless.
It seems like it would both lower compatibility and make the board look ugly.

On all the layouts proposed you encounter the problem that 75% and 65% boards encounter, the 3 keys above the arrows that are hard to find in correct legend & profile since it will only be found in mod kit designed for 75%.

Layout #2 with 6u spacebar is the hardest, even with the recent addition of gateron 6u spacebars, this is still an uncomman keycap sizing. And there's also the problem of centered/offcenter stem.

Layout #1 & #3 can be filled with any recent GB that offer both 1.25 & 1.5 bottom row. Only the 3keys problem remains.

Just voted for bottom row Layout #3.  :thumb:

One thing I was reminded of, but can't remember the verdict: is there support for split backspace?  I see a couple different layouts, both with regular backspace placement and a "shifted" (1u to the right) backspace placement, which looks promising, but the plates mockups don't show support for split backspace.  Was this discussed before?

I too was hoping for a split backspace. I thought that was in the original design, but maybe I'm wrong.  I hadn't looked in a while.

I can't decide between options 2 and 3. Aesthetically I like 2 better, but I know that I already have, and can continue to find, caps to support 3 easier. I'll probably go with 3...

I don't believe there was ever any intended support for a split backspace - but I would be incredibly excited if there were. The differences between #s 1-3 are comparatively trivial. Allowing a short spacebar would be huge - and yet another way to make this project attractive.

I'm actually kinda surprised that a 1.25 + 1.25 + 1.25 + 6.25 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 bottom row layout isn't supported.  That seems like kind of a no-brainer for this setup.  Did I just miss it?  Am I blind?

True. That is why there is an Interest Check though, to get feed back from the consumer and make sure you are meeting the need. Will everyone be happy? No, but that doesn't mean people shouldn't offer suggestions. Plus people like getting their voice heard. Makes us all feel like special snowflakes.  :p

Sorry guys, made a mistake here. I meant to ask which type of carbon fiber plates you'd prefer, not which layout you like. Here's two options.

1. Two separate plates, meaning that if you want both layouts, you would have to buy two plates for better compatibility.
2. One plate with separate bottom row, meaning that you only need to buy one plate which is compatible for both layout #2 and #3. The bottom row is installed separately from the main plate. But it's kinda a new thing, so we don't know if it would be accepted by most people.

I love the idea of having a separate plate just for the bottom row! Experimenting with new things is the way to foster more innovation. I'm all for it. :)

What about stability? Isn't the extra plate kinda loose?

No need to worry about stability. That worried me at first but the producer said it's not loose at all since there's 4 screws to support the bottom row plate.

Does this affect transportability of the board, carrying in a backpack? Or is this already answered through the stability questions?  :-[

Two plates might be better for key stability.

But, one universal plate might be better and cheaper for most people.

It doesn't look like it is based on the plate renders.

Does the plate with the separate bottom row include all three layouts or only #2 and #3?

What kind of case will be used in the buy? Is it the one shown in the OP or is it the taller and thicker one as seen here: https://i.imgur.com/AG0pAFX.jpg

I totally agree... Reminds me of Ducky's Shine4 case design. This actually makes me re=think if I am gonna spend my hard earned cash on this board. When looking at it on Taobao there seems to be options of case color. Might look better if the case is black imo. There are no pictures of the black option though. Contemplating if a future hot swap board might look better and wait for it to happen.

Yeah. When it's available you will probably fill out a form about what layout and case color you want, then you get an invoice sent to you.
When the groupbuy ends, the groupbuy leader (feng) puts in an order at the factory, the parts are made and then finally shipped to you.

Taobao only sells the 22mini hotswappable, and not the original 68 mini. =\

I see :(

So they do the non-hotswappable smart68 but not the hotswappable?

I just talked to the producer but unfortunately he's too busy with a project fund raising lately and he doesn't have time to deal with Smart 68. Although I was planning on doing a group buy in December, it seems it has to be delayed until further notice from the producer. For now we just don't know yet when this can happen. Sorry for the bad news. :(

Hello, is there any chance that we could buy the hot swap pcb / led "tools" and  without the keyboard ? I was looking to use it for a modding project. So that i could just swap led / switch to have some test done ?

Thanks

Not the same layout, but the same idea of hot-swappable switches. Massdrop has the Team Wolf Swappable Switch Keyboard Bundle (https://www.massdrop.com/buy/team-wolf-swappable-switch-mechanical-keyboard) posted today.

There also appears to be a plastic insert that the switches use before they are inserted into the plate and the PCB appears to be screwed into the plate as well.

Looks interesting.

I believe you can remap the front Omron switch as your 'Fn' key. Instead using up one of your keyboard switches.

Matt3o's keyboard does not feature hotswappable switches though. But the plate is notched so you can swap sliders instead of whole switches.

Oh man, between this and the White Fox, it's a hard decision. I don't really care about the hot-swapping aspect of this keyboard--it's that FN key that's most compelling to me. It's a more elegant solution than my current one of using TouchCursor and using the spacebar as the fn key.

I just got one of these in today from Taobao for just shy of 210 USD. The thing is gorgeous. My biggest issue at the moment is that I need a new plate so my backspace and tilde keys are in the right places, as well as (imo) better bottom row sizes. Is there a CAD file for this layout (https://geekhack.org/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=61714.0;attach=109896;image)? I'd love to get one done in aluminum.

The plate I have now is this one (https://geekhack.org/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=61714.0;attach=74314;image).

Horribly focused cell phone pics of the board (no switches or caps yet. Hopefully she'll be done by Monday):

Looks like yours is version 1 of the smart 68 and if I remember correctly that may have been the one with the front fn switch that looked messed up from soldering? You might want to check the PCB.

Yeah, that's the one! It seems he relisted it at a lower price, as the link you put up was for 1800 RMB and I got this for ~1300. It is a version 1, and the front switch did look a bit botched when I got it in. It was mostly just flux residue luckily, and after some cleaning and a resolder, looks and works like it's brand new! I had to put my light (Blue springs) Blacks in it as I don't have any clears on hand, and I really hate linear switches, so that's no good, but the keyboard itself is really nice. Having dedicated arrow keys and a caps lock again is gonna take some getting used to, as opposed to using my Pok3r.

What is your takeaway from it so far? Build quality is alright? Etc.

So far, I'm enjoying it a lot. Having arrow keys again is an adjustment for sure, and I wish I had a plate with the backspace and tilde keys in the opposite positions, but I can work around that. I also wish the board was Mini USB instead of Micro, but I digress. As far as build uality goes, the letter between "Tab and "W" seems to be non-functional, which I'll be trying to work out in just a minute (I didn't notice it until I had to use it just now). As far as concerns about pulling out switches when changing caps, I wouldn't be. The switches seem to grab the plate well enough to avoid being pulled out and they feel very solid.

The plate is extraordinarily light, but feels solid (it should, it's carbon fiber). The case feels great and the Fn button is a very thick aluminum rod and feels incredibly durable. The PCB is attached to the case via a handful of brass standoffs, then the plate is held down with a set of screws into the standoffs. My gripe with the standoffs is that if you use the plate I have, there's a standoff directly under the "Backspace" key that can interfere with the stabilizer and make the key stick. With a different layout, this wouldn't be problematic at all, though.

Overall, I'm loving the board and would absolutely recommend it if you're willing to spend some time figuring out a couple of the quirks of the board. I'd say another revision with slightly better thought put toward layout and standoff spacing would bump it from a 9.4 to a perfect 10/10.

Sure can! It's dressed in Dolch as it's the only set I have with a 1.75u Shift (I have Vortex RGBY mods, but I don't care for a lot of different colors).

More
The back of the board has a very clean and simple look:

Here's the board before it got any caps:

All the blues I use nowadays have springs from blacks in them, it's a comfort thing. I also decided to add white LEDs for the hell of it. Unfortunately, these switches already had SIP sockets in them, and the legs aren't long enough to play well with the hot-swapping feature. This basically means that not all of my LEDs are working 100% of the time.

The Micro-USB port is machined out and has a nice look/feel to it. I personally prefer my cables on the left (like the Pok3r), but centered is fine and doesn't get in the way of anything. The case is actually machined a little lower internally right where the connector comes off the PCB to accommodate the extra depth, which I find interesting. (I still prefer Mini connectors.)

Here's the board after having caps put on. I need to find two GMK blanks for the keys that have "Delete" and "End" living on them for convenience sake, but as of right now, it's working perfectly.

The case profile is actually very similar to the Pok3r's stock case. The edges are all sharper, though.

If you have any specific questions or want to see anything specific, let me know!

Edit: I actually forgot to mention that the plate > standoff > PCB design makes taking the thing apart a real chore, as you need to remove a lot (about half) of keys in order to get the force required to pull the plate off low enough to feel comfortable. I think if I messed with some of my screw holes having standoffs with the threads cut off and the rest just having longer screws, I could make it a lot more user-friendly.

2nd edit: Feng, if there are any LED controls or a way to program them, could you let me know? Having them all on all the time is a bit annoying.

How thick is the case it looks very thin on the V1 and the V2 looks too thick.

I was hesitant to buy it at the time due the the fn switch's appearance of damage but man I wish I snatched it up when he lowered the price.

I think I may go with a V2 in a few months if the GB does not start after breaking in my novatouch but I am not sure I will like the ~ switch being on the top right.  :-X

Since I need to do a bit of modding and trial/error on my board anyway, I'll take some more detailed shots of the interior of the case (wall thickness and whatnot). I don't really see the thickness of the aluminum becoming a problem at any point.

As for the ~ key position, I still don't really like it the way it is now. I'm looking into getting an aluminum plate made that would give me my preferred switch positions, but I think I'd still need programming instructions if I want to make the most of the board.

Group buy will be available real soon in probably a week. In the mean time, I'll list 5 pcs of Smart 68 V2 on my site tomorrow.

How long will the group buy be open for?

Did you not end up listing them on your site, or did I just miss them?

On which site? I'm sorry, I just went for the ones in your signature. Couldn't find anything there.

So it'll be a Smart68 v2 GB? Still compatible for ISO layout?

How quickly did they sell out? It's great news that this keyboard is entering mass production! Will there be a fully-loaded product with key caps, switches, etc?

No,, the "kit" is a soldered PCB (hot-swap sockets are soldered into it), the aluminum case, and the carbon fiber plate. Switches and keycaps will have to be sourced on your own.

I don't think there's any indication that they ever actually went up.

I kept my eyes on the site since that post, didn't see anything listed. Maybe something got in the way.
