Hey!

Allow me to introduce you to GMK Minimal, a set with minimal looks and minimal cost!



Inspiration

We have a lot of colourful keysets in this hobby with very feature rich base kits. These can be great, but let's face it: sometimes less really is more. Sometimes you don't want a super "loud" keyboard, and many times people pay for a lot of keys they never end up using. Furthermore, white keyboard finishes have been on the rise but sadly we don't have a lot of sets that match this very well. This is when me and Ryan (/u/quaddepo) came together and decided to bring you this set.

Kit design

This kit features all keys to cover the most popular layouts in this community while cutting out keys that aren't often used. To keep in line with the Minimal theme we decided on all text modifiers with a timeless black on white colourway. This set uses GMK stock colours, WS1 and CR respectively. WS1 is the perfect white for this set, since it's purer than CP while not being as "in your face" as WS2. This also plays along nicely with the fact that most keyboard finishes are a more dull white, compared to the very bright WS2.

If you're using less common layouts, don't worry! We've got you covered with this kit! The + kit adds support for both ISO and numpad users. This kit can also be purchased separately for those of you that just want to cover a numpad.

We're super excited to hit the price point for this set. The base kit will be $109,99 at the start of the GB in the US and drop down to $99,99 when we hit 500 sold!!!!! Rest of proxy pricing is still TBD, but we're aiming for equally low pricing! At $99,99 it would be a solid $50 cheaper than your average GMK GB!

One of those is a dead IC, other isn't easy to find (let alone at 109,99 or 99,99) and the other is beige (same colour as 9009 alphas), none of them have all text mods. Obviously this isn't the first BoW keyset, and it probably won't be the last. There also is an obvious demand for both clean and affordable sets, and like I said this will pair great with all the white keyboards coming out.

Text mods are a bit of a fresh take + I think the uniform look fits the theme very well since you'll always have some all text mods when going with icon.

It definitely does exist In gmk molds but I don't think enough people use numpad to drive the price up for the general buyers, which is unfortunate since I use numpad

I think the kits are great as they cover most 60/65/80 percent layouts although I do agree the 2u shift "could" be removed but only should if it lowers the price.

I like the pricing strategy and color choices for the set.  It opens up some cost-effective mix-and-match options.  Specifically, because it's CR and WS1, it would be possible to combine a set of this with a set of WoB to obtain a WS1 version of Monochrome (and a WS1 inverse Monochrome).

• GMK Calm Depths on Kono was a 3-color set with more compatibility and was $125 @ MOQ 250 during GB
• GMK Jamon on Massdrop has similar compatibility but is a 3-color set and is $99 @ MOQ 500 during GB
• GMK WoB on Massdrop was another 2-color set with more compatibility and was $110 sold at retail and $99 during GB

Good point about WoB! It says 709 sold so I presume thats for MOQ 1000 then (if not more).

Big difference in feel, I'm 100% sure you would notice the difference between the materials on your fingertips. Plus, very good chance color isn't the same as well.

It's nice to see this, especially since the GMK Paper IC has stagnated. Renders look great, and I like the text-only aesthetic.

A few suggestions:

• Add R3 PgUp and R4 PgDn to the base kit.
• Use Fn instead of Menu.
• Consider text legends for the arrow keys.
• Consider having at least one of the Alts (either 1.25u or 1.5u) be AltGr, or offer AltGr in the + kit as part of ISO compat.

Different colors, for one. Pristine uses L9 which is an off-white color. This set will use W1 which is closer to a pure white.

The base set also excludes the numpad keys and a few other lesser used ones, bringing the cost down.

Also little thing about the mono kit, I've showed it on Discord and it seems to be super polarising. Some people absolutely love it, others hate it. The reason I think it looks weird is because the numbers are aligned top left, bottom right might look more "normal" if you're used to GMK however it wouldn't make any sense IMO since all alphas are top left. I'll do a render on a TKL too where the entire row is alphas instead of having Esc next to it.

Also little thing about the mono kit, I've showed it on Discord and it seems to be super polarising. Some people absolutely love it, others hate it. The reason I think it looks weird is because the numbers are aligned top left, bottom right might look more "normal" if you're used to GMK however it wouldn't make any sense IMO since all alphas are top left. I'll do a render on a TKL too where the entire row is alphas instead of having Esc next to it.

RE space bar kit - looks good, albeit I personally have absolutely zero need nor interest far as the ortho keys go; any chance of adding in a 1.25 blank, though? I'm aware GMK doesn't own convex moulds for that just yet unlike the 2.25 and 2.75 counterparts but still, I'm not a fan of having a key with legend(s) in between two blank space bars.

I like the mono kit a lot, I've purchased mono kits before (eg. XDA Canvas) and I think it fits the set here, definitely will purchase if the price is reasonable.

Far as removing the 2u shift I have no use for it, I also don't like homing of any kind so it doesn't affect me either way.

Spacebar kit - yes please. I have no use for ortho keys but I don't mind them being there.

2u shift vs barred keys - I have no real use for either of these, but I use homing keys because I like how they look. Will there be a homing 5 in the numpad kit too?

Agreed, a 1.25u blank would complete the split spacebar look. My daily work board is BananaSplit 60 with this bottom row layout:
1.25 - 1.25 - 1.25 - 2.25 - 1.25 - 2.75 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 1
I would definitely get this kit if you'd offered it during the GB and it included that extra 1.25 blank

I agree - unfortunately it's a cycle of ISO layouts being less popular, meaning less ISO kits are sold, meaning more people switch to ANSI, meaning that even less ISO kits get sold.
Complain to any keycap designer and they'll likely go "look at set x's numbers"

sure, but that's only the physical layout - any actual ISO layout will involve other keys and thus legends.

I know, but those could be ignored. Those 4 are the minimum to simply make it work. Yes legends will be wrong, but that’s the case for a -lot- of European keyboard lay-outs. Iso-de, French, Portugese, Norde, Iso-UK, they all require different legends. A kit to include all of this does make it expensive I can agree on that. Afaik there isn’t a single country in Europe that uses us-ansi, even here in The Netherlands we have custom legends (€ on the E) and you see iso enter on Dutch keyboards often.

But 4....... caps just to make iso enter and split left shift possible, can’t be that hard/expensive? Precisely the 4 that are included in the numpad/iso kit.

With the ortho kit, what row profile are ESC and TAB? The standard Planck has a R2 TAB and R3 ESC… although the render implies the reverse (R2 ESC and R3 TAB). I'm hoping it's the standard… ? Should we also assume that ENTER is the standard R4 (not R3)?
