Title: [IC] GMK Space Pepe (Charity update)

Update 3/25/20: Project is dead due to Nova leaving to work on ePBT Mint

Update 1/20/20: Artist is still working on novelties. Several users expressed concern with this set being associated with hate and alt right groups. To avoid this association, Nova and I have selected several charities that you guys can vote on for us to donate a portion of the profits to. After popular demand, we have paid an artist to design normal pepe, space pepe, and angry pepe novelties as well as :feelsbadman:  and :thinking_pepe:. Furthermore, we have hired another artist to design the Space Pepe mat

Hello Geekhack!

This is a collaboration between NovaKB and I, tnquntumink and it also happens to be my first keyset design.

Design and Inspiration:
This project was born out of the MechKeys Discord's excessive use of the pepe emoji. At first we came up with a horrendous design matched only by Handarbeit, but it has since evolved into Space Pepe.

It is quite literally impossible to misconstrue this set as supporting hate and alt-right groups since I state my inspiration right there in the first couple lines.

It's supposed to be icon only. The kits have been edited to remove the legends and we will redo the renders ASAP.

Honestly, this set looks pretty neat. Memey name but the colour is nice. Really hoping for the background to become the deskmat because i would 100% buy that.

Dude, I just want to make sure this set got the approval from Matt Furie.
He CREATED Pepe. He DESERVED to get a cut from any commercial products based off of it.
And he SURE AS HELL should have a say if said product goes against his intentions for Pepe in any way.

I was referring to the faux political outrage over a meme that is used by literally half the internet, including a few nutjobs. But ok I'll concede that, that wasn't really the core of your argument. I agree that they should probably ask whether they can use pepes name, which they seem to have done.

Question: The renders don't look like "Dark/Black Blue" aka. "RAL 5004" ? is this just different (gray) exploration or render issues?

Its a bad render I did myself since this started as a joke and we didnt want to invest immediately, the alphas are supposed to be cobalt blue.

Pepe memes are generally allowed to exist because of the “fair use” doctrine of US copyright law

Fair use is shorthand for the fair use clause of US copyright law, which allows a copyrighted work to be remixed or reproduced as long as it’s for a “transformative” purpose like commentary, education, or parody. Thus, fair use is the protection under which memes and remixes of other people’s work are able to flourish online.

This is a parody on Pepe The Frog therefore it falls under the fair use doctrine of US copyright law.
Even so we still contacted Matt Furie and are awaiting his reply.

Sorry, no. While the line between infringement and non-infringement in this kind of things is rather fuzzy, this "space Pepe" is clearly NOT a parody of Pepe the Frog. If you do get permission from its creator to do this variation of the original, then great! But don't say it's a parody when it truly isn't.

The above post does read as hostile, but the comment never accuses this set of supporting hate or alt-right, only Pepe has that association. I have never thought about the character like that, only one Trump failed to use to appeal to a younger audience. I also don't call kids dressed as ghosts for Halloween white supremacists (Maybe they are, ****!). I'm glad to know the content creator is working to disassociate it with anything like that. Maybe next time a simple "Have you contacted the copyright owner, Matt Furie?". We threw flags on the Zelda set (GMK Hero) and the Formula1 set (GMK Silver Arrows) for possible, and glaring, trademark infringement. Why would this set be any different?

I am only a few months old here, but in the last few months I've experienced this community doing such donations as GMK Shark Bait (for sharks), GMK Coral (for the reef foundation), and recently the Australia Fire deskmats and RAMA keycaps. And now this set, which is really cool. (I'm sorry if I missed any others, these were off the top of my head)

Count me in.

Can the NASA logo on Pepe's suit be changed to 'PASA'? Pepe Aeronautical Space Alliance?

For those unaware of the origins of Pepe, its adoption by internet trolls and the alt-right, and the currently-active "take back Pepe" campaign, the second half of this Reply All episode covers it nicely: https://gimletmedia.com/shows/reply-all/76h56o/81-in-the-tall-grass

That also includes an interview with the creator, Matt Furie, who describes his current efforts to reclaim the character.  What Furie is trying to do, primarily, is put out so much "good Pepe", that it overwhelms the bad.  The vast majority of the "good Pepe" content being generated is from folks other than Furie himself, so I think this set would add very nicely to that effort and not be frowned upon at all by the creator.

Relevant quote from Matt Furie:

“As the creator of Pepe, I condemn the illegal and repulsive appropriations of the character by racist and fringe groups. The true nature of Pepe, as featured in my comic book, ‘Boys Club,’ celebrates peace, togetherness and fun.
