Performance of Windows XP, 7, 8, 10 (old and new) and just how bad was Vista.

My future (fantasy?) project that I keep thinking about is building a "classic" PC to use for basic things like word processing and spreadsheets only, and never connect it to the internet at all.
I have legit M$ installation media going all the way back to about DOS 3.3, but I might be inclined to run something up to XP or 7 if I knew how to activate it.

There's a PC in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl that's kind of like that.
In the first village, in the bunker, the guy who sells you stuff has an old beige PC with a CRT monitor and everything. It looks like its running some variant of Norton Utilities for the file system - you know, the 2-column one with the blue UI.
Anyway, that's from memory, but there's a classic PC being used for local archiving that definitely isn't connected to the internet. And it's supposed to take place in 2012 or something.
It's best to look for LGR on Youtube to see these classic PCs in action today.

I know, I know...
Initially I was just going to do one version of Vista vs one version of 10. I could knock that out pretty fast, assuming I could find a benchmark.
Believe it or not FINDING Vista was the most difficult part of Vista or the benchmark.
You can find copies but I needed similar copies, I didn't want home edition 32 and ultimate 64bit, or one being SP1 and another RTM or SP2. It was unloved so few kept copies. Even the benchmark was easier. I think I had 10 copies of Vista before I found a matched pair.
But you're right with Win 10.
Maybe it's just me (doubtful) but Win 10 just fights me every step of the way. I'm starting to think it's like HP printers, you have to eject your brain before using it or you will over think it and cause no end of problems for yourself.

I half expected it to just disappear into the abyss with almost no one paying attention, anything remotely on topic at least lets me know someone got something out of it rather than me just spewing nonsense to myself.
Old hardware is a hassle, IRQs are the devil and don't get me started on cooling, finding a good motherboard or oh gawd... a power supply. What's worse than old hardware? old software. As much as I complain about Win 10 and it's problems even i have to admit it's still better than old software. Sure MS tested it properly (unlike win 10), but it was NOT held to the standards of today and a lot of it had memory leaks. There was a reason people used to reboot multiple times a day to avoid losing their work. That and trying to work around memory limitations to begin with. As odd as it may seem, you can probably get a better "old" Windows or DOS experience using virtualization in Linux than using old hardware or Windows virtualization.

That is interesting, you must have been very bored :D
Years of being system admin gave me similar impressions. Never liked Vista, or Me.
I loved the times when we had Windows 2000, with last SPs it was great OS.
