Amazon AWS down, tons of websites and services down.

So Amazon had a problem today with AWS (specifically an the East Coast but effecting everything)...
Rumor is it's bad, really bad and no idea when it will be fixed.

Delivery drivers have been sent home all over, but lest you think it only applies to Amazon here's a list of places and websites also effected... Unsure the extent and this is far from comprehensive.

Makes me glad that I am such a Luddite that I avoid the cloud as storage space. I keep all of my personal data physically and locally, although I do sometimes use Dropbox to exchange files with other people.

Besides both deliberate and accidental catastrophes bringing down data transmission, I can't stop thinking about natural phenomena such as weather and solar flares.

Took 6 hours to get most services back, not sure if everything is back yet or not.
Apparently while AWS has multiple redundancies, this server/center was the one that controlled those redundancies. DOH!

It was bad enough that more than a few CEOs were making calls to find out how to return to their old self hosted systems (should have never switched), turns out even their backups were hosted on AWS so they couldn't switch back and couldn't even get started on breaking away until AWS came back online. Good job, what a sh*show from one end to the other. There's going to be some uncomfortable conversations at board meetings.

unfortunately, AWS does make a lot of sense for a lot of businesses and is already a lot more reliable than other big cloud providers (looking at you azure) and does have competitive pricing for many products, as well as offers a ridiculous amount of managed services, so it's easy to see why everyone uses them. it does create a single point of failure, and while it doesn't fail often, it's definitely becoming more obvious whenever AWS takes a crap. well whatever, life moves onward yeah?

well sadly i feel like the realist’s response to that is, what are ya gonna do about it. google and microsoft’s answer to aws is honestly trash, which is why aws has so much market share in the first place. all this stuff is like talking about the weather, it is what it is at the end of the day. i’d like to see some better options too though.

the response to that is to have smaller hosting companies. AWS is anti competitive like pretty much all of the big ones products and so the smaller ones can't offer a compelling argument and die, we need to use smaller host when we can to make the web a better place.

The correct response is to break up the monopoly.
Amazon more than almost any other company needs to be broken up.

the problem is that no other company offers so many managed services that you can configure with one fell swoop. the fact that AWS is so big is what makes it good. you don't want to have to configure your one service across multiple cloud providers, you want the same cloud provider to do ECS, elasticache, dynamodb, cloudfront, SNS/SQS, and slap it all into one configuration file and deploy, and view all your metrics from cloudwatch. no small provider can offer this and azure and gcp just does the same thing, but less reliably and with less support and fewer services. a lot of providers that do maybe one of the services that AWS provides are often worse and more expensive. one that comes to mind is qubole, which is definitely less reliable and more expensive than AWS EMR for handling ETL jobs. one company that's promising is Lambda Labs, but again, only targets just one service that AWS offers. definitely cheaper than AWS for its purposes though.

Breaking them up won't stop AWS but it would slow it down.
As it stands if they have a problem or Amazon wants to grow it they can siphon money from everything else they have rather than having to stand on it's own.

AWS (and more importantly Amazon itself) has reached the point of "too big to fail", anything too big to fail, especially one that impacts everyone's lives to that extent either needs to be split up or be made a public utility.

only issue, they have enough money and weight to not have to care about regulations... already a few years back microsoft was going to be split up but ended up never doing it, same with the ruling that force them to not ship their browser with windows... now they even force you to use it

I'm not familiar with Google Cloud (and neither is anyone else it seems), but Azure is just a joke. I think it's just a way for Microsoft to pretend they are also a cloud provider and Azure never meant to actually work.

Microsoft is currently the 2nd or 3rd largest infrastructure and cloud provider (depending on who you ask), I'd say it's hardly a joke.
