Warning of Intel Core i5 - yours might be dual core!
« on: Thu, 03 October 2019, 11:44:48 »
I was browsing my sister's twitter account and found someone complaining how they couldn't run games. They had the Intel Core I5 4300-U.
 That processor was dual core.

I heard on a youtube video that most people try to sell the same i5 desktop variant.

I think it's the I5 that gets people scammed. Don't fall for this.

I would not consider this a scam at all. Intel has never stated that all i5 series CPUs means it is a quad-core. It is the responsibility of the customer to do their research. The CPU you listed and it's related Haswell i5s are all typically put in very budget-friendly laptops. You can't expect to get a good gaming experience, with any modern game, out of a laptop that costs a couple of hundred dollars.

It is a 4th gen mobile CPU. How could you possibly expect more out of it?

It's a deliberate obfuscation to project good-better-best,   so the consumer can instantly identify how much LUXURY they can afford.

i3 is the base toyota,

  i5 is the loaded toyota,

   i7 is the Lexus,

i9 is the Lexus + Exotic Trim pack.

Mmmm...  I'd still say Intel quads/hex are the ferrari, because they're much faster in a line due to high overclock + single thread advantage.

Ryzen 3rd is more like an 18 wheeler,  it'll get things done.. you can move your whole house..   It's not fast off the line though.

MAYYYbe in the future, when we get to 5ghz ryzen ,  we can have an 18wheel ferrari..  but not YET.

Even 6th gen mobile i7s are dual core w/ hyper-threading

would definitely not consider it a scam, i5s never have hyper-threading, therefor a mobile i5 older than 7th gen will only have 2 cores (only one mobile 7th gen i5 had quad cores)

it's once you get to 8th gen that the mobile i5s started having quad cores as a standard, and even some of those were still dual core (the Y variations only, the U variations are all quad core)
tp thread is tp thread

Yeah, I can honestly say that I am a bit disappointed in my R9 3900x. The highest boost clock I've seen just barely touched 4.5ghz. It's still more than sufficient for the applications I use it for but it is a bit disappointing that it doesn't hit their rated clocks they advertised them at. For single core, Intel is still most definitely the king.

I mean, you absolutely made the correct decision in going AMD 3900x,  Intel is faster for specific tasks,  but it's still a HUGE RIPOFF when amd gives you so much more for the same price.

If you went with 9900k, you'd have to buy a new socket for the next one.

If I were building a new pc today, I wouldn't hesitate, 3900x.

Everything is in line,  if they slot the next 5ghz Ryzen into the X570 plat,  GG-intel..

Dual-core i5s are usually employed only in laptops, afaik.
To echo Steezus, Shmintel has never claimed that the i5 was a strictly quad-core chip and you oughta do your own research next time.

Big difference between desktop and mobile.

"The majority of previous-generation Core i7 and i5 desktop CPUs are quad-core processors, while mobile versions of both processors from previous generations are dual-core. ... The latest mobile Core i5 processors, meanwhile, mostly have four cores."

Comparing one i5 to another i5 can be hard to do unless you do some research. Within each of the Intel CPU families (i3, i5, i7,etc) are processors of varying clock speeds. The main thing the i7 has over i5 is hyperthreading and perhaps a bit more more cache memory. There are some high end i5's that will outperform lower end i7's on certain tasks.

AMD does this, too. I assumed a laptop with a 3200 would follow their naming structure, but it is a dual core.
