Now you're talking about foobar2000, on my Mac I cannot live without VLC. QuickTime is useless. VLC even relies on ffmpeg libraries I believe.

I have some programs that I really enjoy using, but god tier isn't something I would give to anything. But Foobar2000, notepad++, mp3tag, audacity. are atleast four I find to be really good at what they do. I feel like I'm missing one but whatever.

*edit* I have heard alot about vim before. I think I need to look into it.

Foobar2000 and VLC are must haves.

CCleaner is also useful, especially if you don't want to have to completely wipe a new computer to get all the bloatware off, and I don't think I've seen it listed here yet.

Great little program (with a portable version) for making USB bootable drives, which I do on a semi-regular basis (the house gnomes have eaten most of my thumb drives.) It does exactly what it needs to do with absolutely no fluff.

I used to love arch linux, but it is a pain in the *ass to keep it running for me personally. Yes I know I should check out posts on archlinux site before updating but I just don't want to. But I guess it's fairly typical for rolling release distros.

It is really fast though.

For me, at work, I have to code/script in JSP, PHP, JS, XML, MSSQL. For my keyboard hobby, I dabble in C/C++/Python/MD. So rather than having multiple IDEs specific to a language, I like to use NP++. I also use it as a daily dairy, TODO list, code snippet board, etc.

Interesting to know, thanks! I hated it in the earlier versions that it didn't use fixed space font like wtf a code editor with a non-fixed space font.

Notepad++ annoys me every single day, but other text editors annoy me more.  If you're expecting an IDE, you're gonna have a bad time.  It's just a text editor with some extra features.

Also I like to use open source software when I can.

Steam may be a great system for buying cheap games but I expect god tier programs to be free of annoyances, old bugs and limitations. Steam lacks the goods to make such a list imo.

You can't control game patches or updates, which is ridiculous. Let alone that some games prevent you from launching them without forced updates even when playing offline and when you don't want the latest changes (I'm looking at you MGSV v1.07).

Steam multiple user support in Windows suuuuuuuucks.

Most of the others I'd have listed have already been mentionned, but one missing from the thread that's been showing a lot of promise is Atom.io. While the idea of building a text editor on top what is essentially a Javascript engine still sounds odd to me, it's cross-platform and has TONs of plugins for it. I still tend to pick Notepad++ over it on Windows, out of habit; but it's my go-to text editor on the Linux side.

KeePass 2 and PasswordSafe.

Quassel-core + clients for IRC.

On the commercial side I'd say:
Beyond Compare - programming context aware and you can roll your own grammar if whatever you're coding in is missing / needs customization.
Start8 - has allowed me to take advantage of the actual improvements Windows 8.1 has over 7 without the vast majority of the inconveniences.

Arch linux is kill, void is the only way now.

And steam is the best. I almost never have any issues with it or have issues with multiuser support. Add me tho, same name - jaffers

Forgot two truly god tier programs, Everything and Launchy. I have both mapped to hotkeys.

Every time I use someone else's machine that doesn't have these, press the hotkey combo and nothing happens, a little part inside me dies thinking I'll have to use the Windows Search.

2) xbps - a nice package manager with an option to build packages from source code.
3) sublitting packages to the official repo is easy, meaning there's no point for an equivalent of AUR
4) has an actual installer(in curses even!) so you can go straight into making your system as you want
5) the said installer can either make it either a complete instalation with all the stuff it boots with on the liveCD/USB/whatever, or a bare-bones one without GUI(not sure if it includes X)
6) really light and fast
7) gives you a lot more choice(kernels from 3.16 LTS to 4.5, glibc or musl, and so on)

Not really, Mint is based on Ubuntu while Void doesn't have any relation with Arch.

And it's as stable as you want it really. Just be prepared to xbps-install a lot, even stuff like alsamixer(part of alsa-utils) was missing when I last checked.

Interesting project.. I once switched to penguin linux for half a year. Back then, it felt like a sweet spot: a merger between arch linux and gentoo. Felt like the speediness of arch but still be able to compile and custom tweak to death like gentoo. And a community as friendly as GH. No idea where the distro is now though.

VLC - Plays anything,  I use it daily.
Octopi - runs and streams 3d printing
TeamViewer - remote control system, it's saved my behind many times.
Cura - easy to use 3d printer slicing.
Mint Cinnamon - my laptop and desktop are both running it. I was using Pear Linux for a while, but it's gone now and Elementary is not a replacement.

Android
Xiaa Live - I use it to stream several radio stations, best I've have found. Almost as versatile as VLC on computers.
Tempest Free - fantastic weather map (a lot of tornado chasers use it). A bit data heavy
Radar Now! - another weather map, rather basic, but fast and low bandwidth.
Nova Launcher
Remote Keyboard (input from your computer to your phone)

I don't think we hear much about Void on this side of the pond, but it seems like it has a lot of potential and works well.
