prototype first
the proto will be WKL and it will be mine
protos ordered and in. everything is great, I had to make two small changes to the case itself and I also modified the weight a bit to add some more screws (the weight screws are all internal).
I am planning on starting the group buy in mid/late June of this year (2020).
the PCB (h87c-hsp) prototypes are good to go.

yea proto plate will be wkl ansi only since it's for me, but the actual normal version will have option for fixed wkl and universal. will likely do fr4 full + half at least.

also the goal of the smaller 30-40 unit quantity is to let myself do stuff more frequently. QC/final assembly/packing/shipping takes a while as I've learned with hbcp and I'd like to not have so many boards to do at one time.

it's a normal tkl, f13 is neat but not within the scope of this. plus it allows me the possiblity of doing a special edition in the future :cool:

so manufacturing isnt the problem. it's how much time i am willing to take out of my day (free time otherwise, usually, or time i spend designing stuff like this for myself and others) to QC, ship, deal with issues, etc.
it's easier and gives me more peace of mind to not deal with larger scale orders at once, because i like to live my life as well

Trust me. The last thing you want is China QCing these boards. At least not as the sole QCers. And most designers don't make livable profits (or sometimes even profits) off their GBs. Having never designed or manufactured myself, what are the main reasons for low-batch runs? If anybody could manufacture at scale with QC, it would be China, right? There's clearly more work on your end with say a 500-run batch vs a 100 run batch, but aside from that, are there genuine manufacturing concerns with quality? Upfront manufacturing deposits? I'm starting to get the design itch....

QC from the factory is usually physical defects etc. with less emphasis on finish or coating issues. you can always pay to have better QC done (which I did with hbcp, and others have done) which is nice, but will drive the overall cost up.

Yeah. I'd def take that pale gold and throw on some vint blacks and some old cherry caps I harvested. Def a very traditional layout. Love it.

They're two different materials with different properties and dense-ness. Polycarbonate is kinda soft and flexible while acrylic is more fragile. People mix them up because they only notice that it's a translucent material usually...

I haven't seen a PCB that would offer USB connector on both sides of it. Which board needs it the other way around?
yup and besides this isn't designed to be a fit for older cases, as the normal h87a is. the Type C port is wider and wouldn't work with cases that have a tight fitment

yea. it will be available with one of the runs. the official color name is "goldish" aka RAL 1035 Perlbeige. I incorrectly included a reference to RAL 7048 earlier.

I love this color. My first mech was a CM Quickfire Rapid in a very light gold. But it seems every custom I find in this color is unobtainable. It'll be nice to have another option that I can't obtain.

I feel this, and also every time 4 colors are picked in a poll and I didn't want any of them. There's some colors available in cerakote that might be a work around. Sometimes some boards with irregular finish are available cheaper too which might dovetail into a recolor

It would likely be a ~$180-200 addition to the tkl one itself. maybe a bit cheaper depending on if i want to make less money or not. i would offer it in the same colors as the tkl during each run.

I will run the buy as a raffle. It will be a bit more involved (on my end) than a normal take-all-entries-and-pick-the-top-X-as-winners style. I would like to do a "multi-stage" raffle, randomizing entried and eliminating X% per "round" until it's at the desired number of winners. It won't operate differently than others since it'll still be fully random. I may add something like, people who progress further in the process but don't win have additional entries into future raffles/buys of mine. Not sure how that would all work but it'd be interesting I think.
I'm unsure if I will run that process via Google Form or if I'll have to get a raffle form set up through a somewhat nicer front end. I'll look into it.

protos ordered and in. everything is great, I had to make two small changes to the case itself and I also modified the weight a bit to add some more screws (the weight screws are all internal).
I am planning on starting the group buy in mid/late June of this year (2020).

Suggestion to make it easier would just be to make everyone who entered the first lottery and didnt win would have double the odds the next round, and double again after that etc so your odds go up even if more people are entering next rounds.
