a short statement on geekhack and its future
« on: Thu, 23 August 2012, 09:38:43 »
Hi folks,

First of all, I want to thank everyone for sticking with us during the downtime, the early uptime bugs, all the recent issues we've been having both with the forum itself, the tardiness of various features, the little arguments, the big arguments, the drama, the sometimes straight-up anger expressed here and in private messages (fun fact: the size of the PM database is something like 2-3x the size of the post database (!!)).

Secondly, I want to say something about why I'm here and why I volunteer to help everyone out, and sometimes get into business I should probably stay away from. In the beginning, in the dark ages of the internet and the inception of geekhack, iMav started the forum because he wanted to buy a keyboard, and there was no other place to talk to people about keyboards. When he first called for volunteers, I volunteered because I wanted to help us have a place where we could talk about keyboards, but more importantly, I saw the potential that geekhack has to be a place where people get together and talk about and make all kinds of cool stuff, not just keyboards, but all kinds of cool geeky stuff, trade that cool stuff with each other, and generally have a geeky spot on the net to congregate and induldge our inner creative engineer, or artist, or both!

That said, I am slowly realizing that my ideal forum, where everyone is happy all the time, everyone's ventures succeed, and we do nothing but make cool stuff and talk about it, won't quite be possible. The internet is not so different from real life in that bugs are inevitable. Some people will lose money. Some projects won't pan out. It's been hard for me to accept all these as inevitabilities, and so I've been poking into lots of places I probably shouldn't be, trying to make sure everyone is always happy.

For those whose business I've poked into where I shouldn't have, I truly apologize. Your business is yours, and just because I provide you a forum doesn't mean I have any right to tell you everything about how you should behave on that forum. And to those of you who I haven't quite satisfied, or I haven't quite had enough attention for but should, I apologize as well (ergo folks in particular).

So, what's the point of all this? Well, my job is to provide you a forum, and from here on, that's what I (and the rest of the admin team), rknize, alaricljs, reaper, and iMav, will be doing as well. We'll provide you the best damn forum we can, but otherwise i'll do my best to stay out of people's business. I may compensate for this in certain ways, but I can't say anything about how I'll do that in definites yet, as I'm still working this out, and there are a large number of moving parts both with the forum and my other efforts (AND NO IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THOSE DAMNED MYSTERY KEYCAPS, PLEASE UNMASK YOURSELF SIR OR SIR-ETTE SO PEOPLE STOP THINKING I'M SENDING THEM CAPS!!!)

Finally, thank you thank you and thank you again for choosing geekhack. I consider you all to be my reallllly extended family, and I was only butting in because I was trying to help -- I apologize for any consternation that caused.

Thanks dudes, and please try your best to have fun here!
-Mystery Kawa

you're doing a great  job, and growing/maturing into an undefined role.  anyone that expects you to get it right on the first go needs to realize that this is no different than learning any other new job (paid or otherwise).

I, for one, am glad you're here, and that you've got the perspective you do.  it makes it very clear that you're the right person for the job (among the others as well, of course).

Well, I have enjoyed Geekhack since I joined. I think Nostalgia should be the default theme for neue Geekhack, though. :)

Geekhack is just a bit different in the post-Ripster era, but not necessarily worse!

I agree; it is a lot different now that Ripster isn't here. But it is what it is, and I still greatly enjoy spending time in this community even without his presence.

we will have left overs later.  if you just need a plate, we will have to see if there is a one off plate left.  we can't sell a PCB without a matching plate, unless someone botch a PCB, which will most likely happen.

Thank you mystery kawa and the other mods for persevering in the face of criticism and complaints when the old geekhack went down (just after I joined by the way - coincidence).

There are other forums out there, and there may be other keyboard-related forums, but geekhack is the one I see linked to and quoted most often.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada
