I'm waiting for two black with white LED first gen Ducky One's, one for home and one for work.

Home: MX Green's
Work: MX Clears (and will be adding O-Rings for silence)

I ordered them after testing the ONe 2, and being very positively surprised by its build quality. I opted for the first gen One for a couple of reasons:

1.) The first gen comes with the switches I want (MX Green for home.  MX Clears for work.  I would have preferred tactile whites though)
2.) Single color scheme.   The One 2 looks a little crazy with the dual tones and big colorful lettering

I ordered them on Thursday Jan 10th, but after more than a week of hearing nothing from Mechanicalkeyboards.com I contacted them.  Apparently they were backordered, and will ship at the end of the month.   (the order page said nothing about this)

I'm excitedly looking forward to testing them though.   I consider buckling springs to be the ideal key feel, and have used nothing but Model M type keyboards (either original IBM or Lexmark/Unicomp) at home for almost 20 years, but apart from a short 2 year stint at work when I had my own office and could get away with making noise, I've used rubber domes at work, which is dissatisfying.

Time will tell if I like them.  Certainly the MX Clears with O-Rings will be an upgrade over the ****ty Logitech rubber dome I have at work, but for home we will have to see.  Time will tell if the MX Greens will make me happy.   If they don't I don't think any Cherry MX switch or 3rd party clone could.

It was time to try something new though.   I've been hoping that Unicomp would either themselves design a modern buckling spring keyboard, or partner with someone in industry with the money to do so.  You know, modern sleek industrial design, backlighting, NKRO, good build quality (my Unicomps have worse fit and finish than a Tesla) a functional USB controller (with Unicomps currently it's a gamble if they will initialize in time for me to press DEL to enter bios).

I'd go with a classic Model M ( love that solid feel) but I hate the old beige/grey color schemes, and for me a windows key is a must.  I use it every few minutes when launching programs.  (press windows key, start typing program name, hit enter)

I know the black Model M13's exist (I have one), but no windows key, nad having to use a PS2 to USB adapter is a bummer.

I love the feel of Model F switches, but the layout just doesn't work for me.   I want the full size layout started by the IBM AT Enhanced keyboard on anything I use.

If I ever win the lottery, or come into some unexpected mega inheritance from a relative I didn't know I had, first thing I would do as a passion project is to contact Unicomp and try to either license the buckling spring switch and build my own keyboard company, or invest in them, and start a project to create this new modern buckling spring board.

Until that happens, I guess I'll try the MX Greens?

From what I can see, they’re just stickers on top of the keycaps, they weren’t there on the original K104. Debating whether I should leave them on or remove them though! :))

Nice! I think you're really going to like it, providing the switches are smooth.

I have a pretty dirty IBM Model F AT on the way. I'll probably get it the week after next.. (because everything is always in the bloody US!)

Thanks.  :D

I got it today, it's a joy to type on, and it's also the latest Model M I've typed on that wasn't a Unicomp, you can really tell the difference from early Model M's from IBM to this, to Unicomps. It feels like a midway point.

It is quite impressive with how much performance can be packed into such a tiny graphics card. I've always liked to build my computers around having the smallest form factor with the most performance.

I do love that period of keyboard making, the design looks so good.

I think I remember seeing the AT's auction listing on Ebay, I thought about that one quite a bit.

I'd love if the AT design came back with tiny changes, and maybe a smaller chassis. (I seem to remember a guy on Reddit making CAD files for a keyboard chassis and board that was Model F AT like, I'll have to look for it.)

I agree. It does seem that once everyone went to cheap rubber domes that nobody cared to put in the effort to design a unique case anymore, although it is also fair to say that most just copied IBM's designs in the 80s as well anyway. A modernized F AT chassis would be wonderful, just with more metal. I started taking apart one of those K151Ls today. I swear that the thick switch plate alone flexes less than most complete keyboards do.

I like the AT layout, but I think it is a bit outdated. Personally, I would like something with the heft of a K151 or a Model F, with a thick bezeled 60% case. I think that would be my end game layout. I guess the modern Model Fs offer something like that, but I would like Alps customizability. Not saying that other keyboards aren't good, but I would like to see thicker bezels and MORE METAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That was posted a year ago. I was certainly surprised to see that people cerakote keyboards though. I imagine it would be a fantastic finish.

Wow, I was unobservant as hell. I saw "January" and then my mind went directly to "OOoo I wonder what the design is."

All in all, thanks! I will pay close attention to that now.

Those were some dark times, and I can't say we are completely out of them, but we are getting there quickly, the keyboard market is becoming gigantic, and I hear more people than I've ever heard before talk about a quality keyboard.

But the quality back then was just staggering, It's really a night and day thing for me going from a cheap Lenovo rubber dome at work, back to my F122 in the evening. I'm starting to enjoy coming home to a good keyboard, it's such a difference.

Oh, don't get me started on the flex, so many keyboards are just so cheap in material, it sucks, and shows in how ugly they get so fast. (Dirt, grime, scratches, you name it.)

I mean, the At layout really misses only a few keys, but I don't find it too scary, since it has most of the rest of the modern layout. The arrow keys are sorely missed though. as well as F11 and F12, since you never realize how much you need them UNTIL you don't have them.

But I'm 100% with you on wanting more metal keyboard cases, especially the older fashioned steel and zinc monstrosities, these things will survive a war, and possibly win the war.

Is there a particular reason that you're using a rubber dome at work? Noise? I know your coworkers can't stomach the mighty buckling spring, but you would think they would at least be ok with some linears or something. Some of the older Lenovo rubber domes aren't half bad at least. I think I have one with a fingerprint reader somewhere.

I'm almost considering maybe buying an extra F77 case or two from Ellipse to build my first custom keyboard in, with some box jades, maybe even blue alps. I don't know of any other case in production today that you could probably run over with an 18 wheeler and it would shrug it off.

I feel like this should be something stipulated in job listings, like all other requirements.

"You must accept the use of garbage keyboards in the workplace."

There are mechanicals that can get really close to rubber domes in noise though, sometimes even quieter I think. Chyros has at least one good video with comparisons.
