Title: [GB] Aegis: Left Hand 1800 [SHIPPED]
Post by: aeryxz on Tue, 30 October 2018, 08:14:48

IMPORTANT: Please read this thread regarding the Aegis PCB Support. Thank you!

Hello Geekhack!

We are a small group of keyboard enthusiasts from the Australian community who are collaborating together as aeboards to design and manufacture our dream keyboard. With this keyboard, we wanted to bring together a popular layout, in this case it was the 1800, and give it a modern twist to create a tool befitting of the modern software and applications one might find in a workplace.

After months of design, feedback and iteration, we present to you our board.

I've been dreaming about something like this for a long time. Looks like you got further than some dodgy keyboard layout editor stuff. :) Hope I have the funds for this.

Thanks for the kind words everyone. It took some months to get here, but yeah, all the designers on the team want this board and not just a KLE idea. We had to deal with compromises throughout the project in regards to some of the layout support, we did several iterations getting feedback and changing them. I know it's not a board for everybody, but I hope those who are interested will be happy with what we are making.

Where's the ISO mate ?
It's impossible due to the small left shift.  I suppose you could put the extra key where FN goes on a 60% if you can get your head around shift not being where it should be...

Only gripe is no 1.5-1.5-7-1.5-1.5 bottom row option, but aside from that I'm definitely interested in the board.

Do you have color samples / swatches of the navy?

We are working on getting one. Our original sample was pretty dark, but still quite nice. We are looking at getting something more blue navy then dark navy thought. I'll let you know more details when we have that information.

Our tentative date for the gb form opening will be at Midnight AEST, 10th of November.
This would be 9:00 AM (9:00) on the Previous Day for Eastern Standard Time, or  6:00 AM (6:00) on the Previous Day for Pacific.

As you may have seen, interpretations of 'dark or navy or blue' has varied so wildly from maker to maker, far more than it should, considering.

Personally whatever dark sample you had could never be too dark for me --- most of the ano processes seem like they lighten and end nowhere close to their intended navy, deep, or dark, by the time they ship..... stoked to likely get in on your version of dark navy, soon.

I have attached the colours samples we have received.
Our prototype unit is the gray we are offering, the other colours from left to right are - black, silver, rose gold and navy.

I am coming around to liking this navy more for the board, since it would match the brass accent. We are not doing rose gold for that reason.

If people are happy with this navy (it's grown on me), then we will run it as navy.

The Navy looks fantastic! From the photo it reads as almost a blue-gray. Would it be possible to get a couple more photos of that sample at different angles relative to the light?

Just a day and bit before I open up the forms. Thanks for the patience everyone!

Just to reiterate our colour intentions, we'll be running Navy in the sample colour as shown above, which is closer to a dark navy than a blue steel. Added the samples under different angles and light.

[attach=5]
[attach=6]
[attach=7]

We will NOT be running rose gold for this buy, the sample is nice but we felt like it took away from the brass accent.

There's also some collaborations to go with the Aegis:

First up, we are in talks with rama.works to design a nice little memento of our brand launch, a nice aluminium cap with AE logo with an enamel fill. This cap will only be available with purchases for the aegis for now, but I may order a few extras depending on how we go. Big shout out to rama.works for talking and designing the cap with us, especially in their busy schedule. Legends.

Next, is a braided cable with tech flex from Australia's own DMacMakes. Cable quality is great and he also does colour matching custom cables upon request. The cable in the set will match your aegis chosen colour. They will be USB A -> XLR, and XLR -> USB C, with gold connectors.

[attach=1]
[attach=2]
[attach=3]

Finally, a custom sleeve for the aegis, with aegis art on the back and logo on the front.

[attach=4]

All of these collabs are option and limited for this aegis run, and entirely up to you if you want them. I'm excited to be able to bring these to you with the gb launch!

Yes. Shipping is invoiced later, once I have the keyboard in my hands and the team starts quality checking. So there's the initial order invoice to get the group buy started, then one later to get the keyboard from me to you. I hope that clears it up.

Invoices are out! Please pay asap so I can start talking to the manufacturer. If you want a colour change, email or pm me on discord using the details in your invoice.

Here's a pie chart of the colour popularity, so if you wanted something a bit more unique then maybe silver is the way to go. Personally, I'm going for navy.

Hi all. Just wanted to give a quick update.

The packaging is underway. I've got foam samplee coming in to test fit, which means that your aegis will be safe when being transported.

Pcb have been finalised and ordered, and this should arrive in a month. I'll be sure to take pics when they arrive.

I've has the manufacturer to produce a navy sample. The reason for this is that I wanted to finalise the design and ensure the quality and perfect fit. They have sent me pictures and it looks real nice. But they have requested me Not to run navy, as their anno shop said it was too hard to achieve the quality I want (just as well as I wanted to test navy sample). I've got pictures of the current anno and I agree with them, there are internal splotches and streaking. I've asked for them to try again with another pantone that is close to the original navy colour and see how those colours turn out. It's a big disappointment to not only me, but also the anno shop since the colour chip they provided was perfectly fine. I'll keep you all in the loop as we try to make the navy one work out.
Once I get the sample and everything fits, I'll start the manufacturing of the complete lot and other colours, while we sort out the navy colour problem.

Rama caps should be starting real soon. I've got half black and half navy made, so if you wanted a cap I'll be in touch later for colour choice. I'll be sure to post pics when I get them.

Cable man has my colour chips and will start on cables (except navy as we sort this out)

Sleeve sample is being sown and sent this weekend.

As for timeline, I think we are on track since I did buffer extra time for these problems and grabbing samples. But as things happens and normal gb ways, postage dates may slip a bit.

In any case, please do not let this bum you out, I'll try find a good compromise between us, me and the manufacturers. Enjoy your Christmas/end of year holidays and spend time with your family and forget about the gb. Keep safe.

Ps: the prototype aegis will be at the Sydney meet. I'll probably bring some cherry caps to fit on this so there's pics of cherry aegis floating around online.

Take care and be nice to each other!

Another update for you all:

My concern about the navy colour was not warranted. It seems like the potato pictures didn't do justice to the anno finish. Have a look at my potato pictures instead. From my pixel 2

[attachurl=1]
[attachurl=2]
[attachurl=3]
[attachurl=4]

With a bit softer lighting

[attachurl=5]
[attachurl=6]

And a weird flex from me, because it was an epic mail day

[attachurl=7]

So I am pretty happy how the navy turned out. I will meet the rest of the aeboards team and pic it apart for some rigorous QC'ing, but from the surface level, it looks pretty dope.

Once we have the PCBS in, I will test fit, then once we are happy with everything being perfect, we will start manufacturing.

So far, our communication with the manufacturer has been excellent and clear, and it shows in the delivery of this production sample.  It's still in the manufacturing stage and so I hope we keep this relationship in tiptop shape!

This is the last call for colour changes. Please mention if you bought a cable, so I can update the cable guy to do the same colour. LAST CALL!

Have a safe holiday everyone.

PS: I messed up and now you have to click the links. I am sorry. I uploaded some thumbnails at the end.

The foam boxes are being shipped. The boxes itself is in production, and hopefully I will get a sample image soon.

Oh and also a big shoutout to Wilba for putting the aegis into the VIA configurator. This means you should have a great user experience in programming the board. Thanks a lot!

Have a merry christmas all.

Yeap!
PCBs are done! Boxes are done! They are being shipped as we speak.
Cases and Plates are being manufactured.
There's a few bits and pieces left to buy (screws, bumpons, electrostatic bag).

Not sure yet. Once the boards are out in the wild and opinions are set, we can think about running r2 if the desire is there.
Aegis is almost at a wrap, manufacturing is done and being shipped to me. I've received all the pcbs and packaging materials, and cables. Caps and sleeves should be here in the next week or so. There's still a tonne of work to do of course, QCing the boards, flashing the firmware, packing and invoicing for shipping, and I'm keen to see it all end soon and get these in the hands of our fans who joined us in the gb.

So sad I missed this, I really hope there is a r2. I just realized about 2 days ago this is probably my grail layout. Before I thought a standard 1800 compact would do it but having it southpaw means it's the functional width of a 60% keyboard and that's perfect.

I got plenty! Black and navy. I guess the best way is to put a form up that you can request one with your shipping invoice?

I will sell the excess rama caps when the boards have been shipped out, so gb joiners have priority. There was a limited moq on these and mostly likely won't run the same design again.

Hey all GB participants,
We were almost at the home stretch with out any major hiccups. Too good to be true I thought, as what can go wrong will go wrong.

The PCBs being shipped out do not support 6.25u correctly. This is a major bummer for us, since we built the aegis with the prototype with single layout support for 6.25.

In between adding more layouts, including 7u, something went wrong between prototype and production. We accept the human error and have learnt that even triple checking things isn't enough, you need to build all the layouts possible.

We are opening the forum to discussion about what we should do, rerunning pcbs at this low moq and reshipping is quite expensive but is a reasonable expectation to have.

Is it acceptable to have r1 of aegis as 7u only? In the interim we will try to make things right and have a chat with the team and decided where to go from here. We welcome any feedback.

We were planning a new board that we think people will love in the near future but I want to solve this problem first and keep all our supporters as happy as possible.

To be clear, there is a missing footprint for the switch on the bottom left control, which means you cannot put a switch in the right place for the cap to fit.

Ok, I built a board today with the intention of getting 6.25U working.

[attachimg=1]
[attachimg=2]

I'll show you how I achieved this, it's not super perfect but it's doable. There's also another way, to do this, I'll outline it below
As you can see it's about 1mm higher than it should be, due to the pins.
[attachimg=3]

---

[attachimg=4]

First thing first, I prepared all the things I need. For this, I used HOLTITES (not neccessary) and some wire. I got the wire from a ethernet cable, you will be stripping it so you have a conductive wire, the idea behind this is that you want to get the switch pin touching the footprint using this wire.

The next thing is, putting all the stabilisers. I do this first, because I tend to FORGET about it until it is TOO LATE.

[attachimg=5]

I then did a quick test to see if my theory would work. You don't need to do this, but it will give you an idea what I'm trying to do.

 [attachimg=6]

I used VIA configurator (https://rama.works/configurator) to configure this button to control for testing, since it is flashed as MO1 (momentary layer 1). Tapping the switch actives this key, so the theory works.

[attachimg=7]

Next is to apply this theory to the build.

I put in holtites, not necessary, bit it adds extra area for contact for the wire. The best way to install holtites is to tin the pad a little bit first, then press down on the holtite.

[attachimg=8]

The next things you want to do is:

Cut open the hole for the stem of the switch, as this will be blocking the switch from clipping to the plate.

[attachimg=9]

I use it using wire cutters and a small conical file. BEWARE OF THE TRACES. But if you did cut up the trace, not all is lost, you can use the same lan cable wire to bridge the switch to the diode.

Cut the switch pcb mount stems, making it plate mount.
[attachimg=10]

Bend pins and solder the wire to the pins.
[attachimg=11]
I did is this way, so the pin on top has a wire coming out from the top, and bottom pin is going through the middle, and they will not cross over, and avoid any chattering.

[attachimg=12]
I did add solder to the mix, to make sure nothing got loose when positioning

[attachimg=13]

Bend the wire into the holtites.
[attachimg=14]
Kind of like this, except I found that insulation of the wire made the gap between pin and pcb too big (this was an earlier attempt, as I didn't take a photo of the above switch solder design)

[attachimg=15]

Test / Solder the holtites if you wish.
[attachimg=16]
[attachimg=17]

THE OTHER EASIER WAY TO DO IT REQUIRES A DRILL....

Basically, enlarge the footprints about 3mm to the right, both the switch pins, and the stem hole. Avoid traces, but you can always bridge the connection if you do.
Then put your switch in, make sure you remove the pcb pins.

I will attempt to do this later, right now I'm gonig to ship more orders out.

Oh man. Your email then reading the start of the posts scared the crap out of me, with ~80% of my cap sets not supporting 7u. Please next time, say that it's just one footprint that's wrong! 6.25u is definitely still usable, even if that key is rendered totally useless, which it shouldn't be with your wires solution.

Would you consider sending out a couple of holtites to help us out and make it a little easier? I haven't done anything like this and I feel like I'll end up shorting something  :))

Haha sorry for the alarm. For me, it's a major disappointment because it's not the experience I wanted the gb participants to have. However the good thing is that of all the things that could have gone wrong (which is MANY in a typical group buy), at least it wasn't that bad in hindsight. The PCB is s definitely usable and if you have a drill with a small bit, it will be easier (which I don't have). Hopefully Wilba has time to show you how it's done, I am shipping his board on Monday and should arrive to him on Wednesday if you want to hold off.

I've already sent your board but I can send out the next ones with holtites and wires. Shipping such a small thing is not really cost effective from Australia (it's 15+ for anything really), so maybe you can source somewhere locally? I don't even think you NEED holtites to do it, I just used them so I could remove wires testing my theory (which I wrecked about 4 switches and pulled about 15 wires trying all sorts of angles).

I hope this doesn't detract your opinions and love for the board, it is a beautiful board and would like to thank you for supporting us.
Cheers,
Eric

It's only a fairly minor thing, you guys will learn from it and hopefully keep coming with some more great designs  :thumb:

If you could get him to detail the bit sizes he uses, how successful it was and any issues arising that would be fantastic and help us make a choice on what we want to do. And also maybe where the bridging should be routed if the trace is damaged (I can't tell from looking at the pcb pictures). Thanks!

I wrote an email to the gb participants and the cost of running pcbs again is not cost effective especially at the low moq we ran for this buy.

If you use 6.25, there will be a gap since you an only use 1u.
If you use 7u, it's the right key to use and won't have a gap.

Please be extremely careful when making the new hole.
These are the traces, do not cut into them! Take your time to extend and do not get bigger than the reference hole to the side. Only attempt if you know what you're doing, and good at hacking things!
If you are not confident with this, I suggest to stay to 7U.

The rest of the boards will shipping out in the next few days.

if you were looking for an extra, pm me on geekhack. I have about 7 left, no silvers are left though.

I will be raising the price to 420USD for the base, but the pcb/plate kits stay at 90 and rama caps at 45.
This is to cover a bit of estimated costs that blew over (and gb participants took the risk of joining us, an unknown gb buyer)
I will also have a kit of Bstock at the gb price of 380, which have slight anno problems. If you're happy to take one, I'll send over pics. From memory, is it a black kit.

After this, AEGIS GB will be closed and complete.
Will like to thank everyone involved. It was a year long project, on and off, and thank my partners in crime, SolidSnake and Xelus.
I'll be writing a blog soon about our adventure, our design challenges, and what our next steps are, stay tuned all.

Once again: a big apology for the missing footprint on 6.25U. I will have extra steps in place to ensure that this kind of thing doesn't happen again.

Thanks for the support. There's a few coming projects that are mine/aeboard related.
Alice Wrist Rest r3, maybe an April 1st board, and a new aeboard design that's in the ideation phase.

Keep it real and thanks for joining :)

Just an update on shipping:

I have signed up to DHL business account and that's taking time. The reason why I wanted to do that is that they do 2 day shipping (or claimed to), and right now my other service takes up to two weeks. So once I have the account set up (which is today, hopefully, fingers cross), the labels get whacked on the boxes and get shipped out tomorrow. Tracking should go to your emails as well. I have trust in DHL, I've used them before, AND they have an option to carbon neutral.

Sorry, I know that you all have been expected tracking, but I do think that using DHL would be quicker and less stressful smashing that f5 button on tracking.

Take care all :)

Yeah!
DHL Finally got back to me mid way through the shipping process. But for the most part sendle has been quick as well, and ahead of estimations. Hopefully will arrive to you soon in all it's glory :)

Yeap, there should be done uhhh... soonish. Parts are coming and Taekeyboards will be doing a build video for it. So it might take some time for the build + editing and publishing.

So I'm getting ready to put mine together and just realized that the 2u caps in the numpad have their switches rotated 90 degrees from normal. Is anyone worried about that possibly damaging keycaps? I've never tried mounting them that way so not sure if it would be an issue or not. Is it possibly worth trying to shave down the stems a bit?

Or are those caps designed to be put on that way? I've never built a board with a numpad before.

The switch stems should be the same regardless of orientation.
I've already built my Aegis and a number of numpads and this has never been an issue for me.

Well the reason I bring it up is that mx switch stems aren't the same either orientation, you can even visually tell that the cruciform is thicker horizontally than it is vertically. Maybe keycap stems are the same though, I don't know what kind of tolerances the manufacturers use. Even then it might not matter enough to be an issue, I'm not really sure.
Title: Flashing PCB
Post by: ACTOR_of_VALOR on Sun, 03 March 2019, 20:11:05
I soldered the board today, and upon creating my layout with QMK, I realized that I could not find the microcontroller for the PCB or instructions on how to put the keyboard into reset mode for flashing anywhere on this forum or the website.

This is my first time flashing a board, so I may be mistaken, but could someone point me in the right direction as to how to flash a new layout onto the board? The video below mentions that you need to connect it in reset mode.

Thanks!

In order to into reset mode, you need to press the reset button on the back of the PCB.

I am still getting used to mine, loving it though! I messed up a bit around the screw holes because I didn't realize just how small they are. Oh well, it's very minor and IMO something bound to happen. Unfortunately my anodization doesn't match top to bottom, the top is much deeper colored. I got the navy blue color. I think I am going to opt for getting a cerakote done instead. If I do, I'll post pictures here. It'll be a cerakote of both the case and plate, specifically to match modern dolch.

No plans to run aegis again yet.

The new June July (Maybe August?) will be revealed soon, but as I said above, I have a lot of things going on in my life at the moment - but I would like to reveal some more information to people who are still in this thread.

We have a new board coming out soon, and it shares DNA with the aegis in terms of the design language, but it will feature a different layout that I feel is less divisive than the aegis.
I was actually carrying it at a university recently (https://www.instagram.com/p/ByKJTW1nEhB/ (https://www.instagram.com/p/ByKJTW1nEhB/)).

We will have more key information soon but here's some of the main points:

- Left hand numberpad (2u's on the left reverse numpad style OR ortholinear grid of 1u)
- 65% on the right (fixed bottom row, normal or split backspace compat)
- designed to feel solid on your desk but light enough for portability. All boards will come with a sleeve so you can carry it in your bag. This board is definitely a user, not just to look good on your shelf.
- Gasket (it is 2019, year of them gaskets https://www.instagram.com/p/Bye4l1tHe9Q/ (https://www.instagram.com/p/Bye4l1tHe9Q/))
- QMK/VIA
- Black, Dark Gray, and 'aegis' Navy
- no GB -> Parts are being machined at the moment out of my pocket, so there is little risk as a gb buyer, and when you buy it, it will get to you asap!

+++ even more exciting things!

and there will be reviews and videos soon. I'm looking forward to reveal more to you all and hope you will also love this board too.

A big thanks to aeboard members (solidsnake, xelus), wilba, my family (who are supporting me in this busy time of my life), and the cool community of people who keep this hobby interesting.

If you bought one and are interested in a fixed PCB that you would have to self assemble, please fill out this form:

https://forms.gle/8LTDzhXdcD5ENvra8

Price TBD, but since it's self-assembled, shouldn't be too expensive. Note: You need to be able to solder small components, this isn't an easy soldering job.
