Question: Are the SMD LEDs pre-soldered?
Question 2: What colour will the stickers be? (Will have to see if it clashes with the anodizing. :P Same dark gray-ish colour with white letters?
Included in this set:
Aluminium housing (Aluminum 6061) in black, silver, blue-gray, or red
MX Reinforcement steel plate (STS-304 1.5T)
PCB presoldered
Fixing bolts
Custom metal stickers

MX Reinforcement steel plate (STS-304 1.5T)

Can you at least let us know if this is plain carbon steel which will corrode like hell or is it Stainless Steel which should last for centuries?
Does anyone have a photo of the Blue-Gray case?

Out of curiosity...why is it called octagon? I get that viper and eagle are sort of random names but octagon seems even more random. Trapezoid would have made more sense (albeit a terrible name).
Hello, nice to see that the GB's up!Hmm, I also curious what's ppl gonna map their 75% too. If don't need arrow keys can map them as others too :))
Since 75% keyboards are custom, I've always wondered on what people are thinking for the very RIGHT side of the keyboard.
Ignore improper keycap profile for now, what would you like to use in 1), 2), 3), 4)?
For me, I would definitely put a 1) Del, maybe 2) PgUp, 3) PgDn, not sure what for 4), since I like both Home and End.
Let's discuss the layout! I've made a picture for reference:Show Image(http://i.imgur.com/z59UdwP.png)

why no acrylic accessories? coming later or coming never?
So the original plans for alps switch support went out the window completely? Very disappointing.

It actually went on a few weeks ago:

I don't know if elton plans on doing it again. I guess we'll see after the first batch arrives.
About the sticker; you can have up to 12 characters on it. Not 100% sure if they will include them though. If custom stickers aren't available, their logo may be on the sticker and will be included. That X symbol

Will stickers be pre-applied? Or will they come on a separate sheet?

They usually ship them together at once.
Oh and it will come in only that one colour.

There aren't any ALPs support at all on the PCB. The reason is because of the 1.75x shift..
I'll ask about the sticker thing.
There aren't any ALPs support at all on the PCB. The reason is because of the 1.75x shift..
Not that big a deal. Some old boards come with 1.75 double shot shift keys so you can source them. Somewhat rare I suppose. But that's beside the point.
If the PCB supported both MX and ALPS as originally planned, people could have mixed & matched switches. So you could have all alphas be ALPS and MX in mods..etc. Hell, even a single MX on the 1.75 shift would have been fine. I know this complicates things but that was the biggest selling point for me personally.
These will pretty much have the same type of color and anodized textures as the most recent duck releases won't they?
So in 3 months they will be shipping to our locations unless we encounter any orobles during production?
They're shipped together usually. Eagle/Viper group buy was a bit different as there were so many orders..
These will be ready to ship in about 3 months.
Running pole, everyone is getting the grey blue right? :p
For ordering, should we specify the color in the comments?
The plate allows all 4 options, but will the circuit board layout differ between the options? (i.e. should we specify our desired option in the order?)

So collecting in December means shipping in March? I ask because I may be moving some time before then. Changing shipping address won't be a problem, right?

Thanks for that. My new love for SA caps may make this too tall though. The angle is almost double that of a filco (for comparison).I would be all over this if it didn't have such a huge angle on the case. Ski slope typing. :)
I really think the angle has been over-exaggerated in discussions, and I've posted this sentiment before, but it's not an issue at all with my LightSaver. The front is quite low, and the keyboard can be used very comfortably without a wrist rest. Combine with something like Cherry profile caps, and it's a pleasant typing experience. My LZ-GH has a lower angle, but switches sit higher off the desk surface due to the thick "slab" of a case + feet, so it either requires a wrist rest or very low profile keycaps, like DSA for me to type comfortably. Currently using Cherry profile, and it's not as nice as DSA was (but I love Cherry profile, so it's a sacrifice I was willing to make). Angle is just one aspect of overall ergonomics.

LEDs if you want some."17 RGB SMD LEDs are included!" Do I need more LEDs?
By illuminating under the keycaps, do you mean each individual keycap, or are the 17 LEDs just for the sides? I just want this underglow effect:LEDs if you want some."17 RGB SMD LEDs are included!" Do I need more LEDs?
This does not include custom LEDs if you want to have some for the switches. The LEDs included are the ones on the surroundings for the effect but not ones that will illuminate under your key caps.
Oh I see. I want a stronger underglow between all the keys like the image I linked. So I need to get an LED for each switch? And do the switch LEDs support RGB?
Thanks for all the help guys. One more question. How can I make sure the underglow is nice and bright like in the picture I linked instead of something like the image below. Does it have something to do with transparent switch housings?Show Image(http://i.imgur.com/1tZ9tRq.jpg)

I don't think silver could be hard anodized.Only specific colors can be used for the hard anodized process and there should be a list online of what aluminum could be hard anodized to. I'm not sure if silver is one of them though.

TYPE III "Hard Coating (http://www.anodizing.org/Reference/reference_guide.html#Type3)"Meaning the best you will probably be able to do on these is a 'Titanium'-ish colour but it depends on the alloy (http://aluminumsurface.blogspot.nl/2010/02/color-variation-in-hard-anodizing-of.html) being used.
Color will vary from light tan to black depending on alloy and thickness. Color overtones listed below may vary with the use of additives and/or the process. Can be dyed in darker colors depending on thickness. [...]
About the ALPs..they can offer only one layout and no plate because they would have to make samples and testing of PCBs and plates. That would cost them a lot of money and time. If people still want ALPs, you would need to figure which one layout you want.
I've spoke about other colours and hard anodizing before but they will offer only what is offered right now.

Hi guys,
Are costar stabilizers not possible at all, or not possible when using a led for that switch?
I'm having a hard time find cherry pcb-mounted stabilizers...
Thinking hard about dipping into my savings account for this, as long as it's still open. Any suggestions for case colour to go with the GMK Dolch in the meantime? Likely going to pull the trigger before the end of the week.

@pichu23 Thanks for pointing me to the GON site, didn't know that one. Shipment is not even that steep (to EU).
What is everybody buying as keycaps? DSA because the steep incline of the keyboard? Or full-profile DCS or SA?
I'm undecided between a plain simple look (less is more) or a full retro look. For the less is more I would go for the Dolch color scheme but with blank keys. I can't stand the printscreen/scrollock/pause legacy keys and also find the upperleft alignment of characters annoying :) Does anyone know a place to get blank Dolch DCS keys (PBT, but not to tightly shrinked).
For the full retro-look I really hope the Symbiosis keyset will become reality: http://www.pimpmykeyboard.com/deals/symbiosis/#comment-5381
I even will accept those printscreen/scrollock/pause in that case :) But it needs to come with a 1.75 shift... and and and SUPER/META/HYPER keys. The Symbiosis is planned with all keys being row 3 SA, so it won't add up to the incline of the keyboard, but it does to the overall height.
I tried DSA on my viper, didn't like it much.
I think for steep incline, you need sculpted profile, not flat like DSA.

I would like to second any notion of running another buy for acrylic inserts. I already have a lightsaver and an eagle. Unfortunately I missed the last buy because I didn't check the thread of the viper eagle buy at the right time. Could you organise something like this for us elton? I would really appreciate it.

When i buy this, a whole finished keyboard do i have to build this?. What parts i need?
Be honest with me... How difficult is this going to be for me with little soldering experience? I've repaired guitar pedals before, and soldered speakers into cabinets before, but that's about it. Will I be able to handle a keyboard build?
I've never owned a Duck anything before, what does it use to do its keymapping/layout editing? Does it come with software? Is there a link to software? It says it supports RGB LEDs, to what extent can you control the LEDs? Is there software that handles this?
Also... I don't suppose there's any chance of somehow getting PCB mount stabs + stab wires involved/included is there? ... stabs are so unavailable from anywhere without absurd shipping T_T;; I'm lusting after this board and I really wanna pull the trigger... but with GON's Nerd MX-Mini just released...
I'll just feel incredibly stupid paying shipping twice from korea (once for stabs and once for this)...
Eventually my keyboard lust will get to me and I'll pull the trigger on this. I know it. Every time I look at that case... Especially RED... with that blueish silver coming in second... but red red red... Is red still an option? If it's not, it makes my decision making a whole lot easier.... :)
OK awesome. I missed that the first time. I see it now. Do they just provide a link then when you purchase it, or was the link there? The link was there in the beginning. I would bookmark that website just to be safe.
Is this keyboard programmable? Will the source code be released? How would I be able to set keymappings for different layers? (Sorry, complete noob here)
It is okay that it doesn't but I am having trouble finding an online retailer that sells keys, switches, usb cables, and all that good stuff. I know the type of switch I want but am not sure where to buy them.I got my switches from wasdkeyboards.com, 100 pcs for $60, Cherry stabilizers from gonskeyboardworks.com
Also, what exactly does come with this kit? Is it just a board and a case for it? Any help much appreciated.

Aluminium housing (Aluminum 6061) in black, silver, blue-gray, or red
MX Reinforcement stainless steel plate (STS-304 1.5T)
PCB presoldered (resistors, diodes, smd leds, etc, but not switches)

Custom metal stickers
Hey there... I ordered this a while ago, and I am also a first time group buyer here on geekhack. Thanks so much for the responses. I bookmarked those sites. Any idea how long the production phase usually lasts?Once production has started the Koreans are usually quite fast. I believe the estimate for the Orion was 1-2 months at most but some Koreans received theirs a week after the deadline. They were all shipped within 5 weeks, straight from Korea.
Hokay, cool.
Gives me some time to find switches & LEDs.
Would anyone like to split shipping / take part in a mini group-buy for an order of stabs to Canada? The shipping costs for a set are more than the items are worth. :mad:I could get down with this.
I'm looking at either $10.00 shipping to Canada from imsto.cn for hammer stabs or ~$23 from gonskeyboardworks.com for cherry stabs.

The difference between the two types of stabs seems to be price and quality. I added both types so that if you wanted something other than Cherry stabs, you could get them.

The hard part is done for you, the SMDs. Soldering switches and LEDs is easier than you think.

That is good to know because as of right now now I don't even know what a SMDs is but I am going to google and find out. :D

I have never really soldered anything prior to building my Duck Viper from the last GB. It is actually quite easy and I only had to desolder once because I placed it on the wrong slot for the keyboard layout. All you really need to solder are the LEDs as well as the switches and you are 100% good to go.
It is really easy. Here is someone learning how to solder https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5lCGo_bYqeE (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5lCGo_bYqeE)
While the soldering involved with this kit is simple, the cost of the original materials is high, so I'd suggest a simple kit to start with to "get your feet wet," something like this kit: https://www.sparkfun.com/products/11202 (https://www.sparkfun.com/products/11202)
Still plenty of time to learn before the parts for this board arrive :thumb:
there you go... another wonderful GB that I missed... there's too much noise in GH, darn!

sorry I don't get it. I have to pay import tax, like in any other EU country. I pay VAT on any value you declare, being a one of the kind product there's not way for them to verify the value you put it on.

Hmm that is an interesting way of doing it. Solid. :thumb:

HYPE HYPE HYPEHow do you figure?
I just realized this is called Octagon because it has 8 sides. Unless is was already mentioned in the previous pages.

thought i had this figured out, but now i'm confused. what are the optimal profiles for the arrow cluster and the 4 rightmost nav keys? is it all R4 like in tjweir's photos, or is it
R1
R2
R3
R4
and
R3
R4 R4 R4
?
If anyone is interested in selling their Octagon, holla at me ~_~
It's a balance of profile and legend. I value a legend that describes to function more than uniform profile.fair enough, but if you use the keys often enough it becomes muscle memory, and by that point i'd much rather have it in the right profile than in the correct legend
You may value profile more.

What is aikon? I'm thinking of getting a 75% keyboard but I don't think I need aluminum. If anyone is interested in selling their Octagon, holla at me ~_~
Does it have to be an Octagon, or will a MX-MINI do?
I'm replacing my two Aikon-based MX-MINIs with my two Octagons.

Very excited to get my first Keyboard kit from geekhack... I am such a noob that I have no idea what TKL is... tenkeyless?
Very excited to get my first Keyboard kit from geekhack... I am such a noob that I have no idea what TKL is... tenkeyless?
Just to be sure... this is what I have gotten in addition to the Octagon GB:
Cherry MX Green switches x 100 or so
Micro USB Cable... (hoping that is right)
Ducky Cherry Keyset
A few stabilizers and the little white things that go on the stabilizers
And of course I already have a soldering kit / solder, as well as keypull tool
Anything I am missing? Should I buy LED if I want them or do they come with the kit?
Thanks for any answers, as I said.. first timer here stepping up from just replacing keys to a full kb.

You'll need a mini usb cable, not micro.
You would also need to purchase PCB mount Cherry stabilizers, not Costar ones. The plate doesn't support plate mount / Costar stabs.
Switch LEDs are not included either, so you'll need to source some of those.

Elton: I recall you said something about customizing the metallic sticker for the octagon. Was there a form we were supposed to fill out? Or did duck end up just using an "X"? Hopefully it's not just the username of the order.
In a pm to me Elton said by default they were going to include metal stickers with our usernames on it unless specified otherwise.Very excited to get my first Keyboard kit from geekhack... I am such a noob that I have no idea what TKL is... tenkeyless?

Also need a key set to rock with this. The dream is a GMK classic beige, but I've already got GMK Dolch, and that GMK Hyperfuse is also tempting me. Any opinions from my fellow GB member to go with the blue grey case?i'm waiting for GMK TA, my personal favorite colorscheme. dark teal and blue grey should be a decent match, but in my head i actually think Hyperfuse would fit the blue grey case most. Classic Beige i'm not a fan of, and it's much more picky with case colors than Hyperfuse or TA.

Orion V2?
That`s right. I believe it will be half acrylic/pc with aluminium top. Around half the cost of the V1.
Something like this? Not 100% sure yet as I haven't seen the pictures for the V2.Show Image(http://kbdlab.co.kr/files/attach/images/340/728/088/001/9e187aa9bba7f7eaafb7e7bfff1aa878.jpg)

Thanks a million for the tips everyone. I got myself the right USB cable and PCB mount stabilizers. I have taken one of my switches apart just to see what it was like... do the LEDs go right in the little two hole seat inside the switch? Or do you mount the LEDs to the board? With most electronics modding it is self explanatory when you look at the board you are working with, but I am just excited and thinking ahead. Try to remember the first time you got a keyboard PCB, and that's where I am at.
I ordered both the flat type and the standard diode type, Red in color along with 130ohm resistors... I might not even light the board up, but they were cheap enough to add it into the kit... I am just hoping I don't destroy the beautiful PCB I have on the way when I go to put it all together! I will take it slow and ask before I act. There are some wonderful tutorials and guides on this forum I will be relying on.. thanks again.
The LEDs sit ontop of the switch housing. You insert the legs into the little slit, and it'll pass through the two holes inside and into the PCB. Just make sure you get your polarity right when soldering!
The board also already comes with factory pre-soldered surface mount resistors. For most LEDs, it's not necessary to swap out the resistors unless you want to be super picky about brightness. If you got through-hole resistors, then you won't be able to use them on this PCB. ;)

AAhhh interesting... thanks. I was wondering if the resistors were completely necessary. I am just hoping I get this worked out how I have it in my mind without any huge mistakes... I am the type that would get every switch soldered in and find out after that I did it upside-down or something foolish. :-[
I have never done a GB before and I am sure it will be well worth the wait. I was thinking it came all put together at first, (embarrassing) but the fact that I can really make it mine makes it that much better. I selected the Octagon because it looked extremely nice and well made along with how many key layouts it offered. Being new I wonder what would you experienced kb modders think is one of the best reasons to take this group buy over another? What sets it apart from your run of the mill board on the custom keyboard vendor sites? Just curious... thanks! (sorry for all the questions.. heh)
What can we expect from the pre-installed resistors? I was wanting to use LEDs I got from AliExpress. There aren't many 75% custom cnc'd aluminum keyboards on the market, so that alone sets this GB apart.
Additionally, you'll soon find out the definition of "wallethack". Gotta collect 'em all ;)

[...] Aside from that, ducks cool side windows look awesome, I'll find and link JaccoW [i think] made a guide about diffusing them with sand paper.(https://33.media.tumblr.com/f0d04738182b4b1aa086de652582f318/tumblr_mpyd4sV5Zl1qdae2ro1_500.gif)
There were some delays and problems from the sticker maker and they won't produce our peronsalized stickers. So now Duck is not going to include personalized stickers instead the sets will include kbdlab, octagon, and their "X" logo stickers..That is fine with me. I prefer those than my username haha
Very sorry about that. Because of the stickers, the shipping is delayed a bit. I was told they will be shipped tomorrow or in a few more days..
Sanding the transparent insert with increasingly coarser sandpaper should result in a similar look. I have some spare inserts, I'll run to the hardware store next week and get back to you guys in a while.

It's already Friday afternoon there.
Items move "faster" over the weekend because mail still moves & planes still fly during the weekends. Items just don't get picked up for processing in many countries over Sat/Sun.

The one I have is not sandblasted. I was told they're 3form acrylics?

I am not sure if I missed it but when will these be arriving since there is a slight delay?
Grr. Really want my octagons so I can start building.
I traded away my Eagle but I do have my viper as my current board i am using atm. How did you want yours built? My viper used SIP sockets too but I only used the ones off ebay and they worked fine the way I used them.Grr. Really want my octagons so I can start building.
But what about that viper and eagle haha.
I am actually going to be sending my Octagon and Viper to thechemist to get built. Just waiting on sips and leds from nuclearsandwich

so how do the LEDs work on this keyboard?
a lot of the korean customs i've seen have some weird combination of red lighting on a few rows, and blue on others
is that just due to the taste of the creators of the keyboard, or do they have LEDs that can be changed per each individual row?
Full LED and RGB SMD LED compatible. 17 RGB SMD LEDs are included! The LEDs per switch are up to the assembler, your choice.

They're rated at 20mA current and 3.2 Vf. I'm guessing I would need a 100ohm, 1/8W resistor for those, but I understand there's some wiggle room. I'm not exactly sure how that works. Just don't want to screw it up...
They're getting ready to ship today or tomorrow. Because of the delay, I convinced them to add a set of stabilizer for each order, so hopefully each set will get a stabilizer set each.

Still haven't picked up my LEDs or switches yet. Haha. Oof. Guess I should get on that.I donn't think so. My viper doesn't.
Quick question for anyone who knows - does the plate allow switches to be opened once they're soldered?

I just found this and I'm looking for a 75% if anyone that ordered is no longer interested, I'd possibly be willing to pick it up from you.PM elton and ask, he said there's a chance there will be extras leftover once all the orders are accounted for

so far I've not seen korean customs with plates that allow switch to be opened.
however, there is some boards that has somekinda 'half plate' where only the alphanumericals don't have a plate so you can open them up

When we meet up, I'll bring the blues and whites.
Happy times when USD was 1:1
Gas prices are going up now, so here's hoping that the dollar will even out a little bit more.Happy times when USD was 1:1
Sure was.
Just placed an order for my MX switches from MK.com
Still waiting on my LEDs from the gb here tho *sigh*
I guess mine was the first one to arrive? :p . Some blurry pics incoming. Package arrived safely and I don't see any scratches on the case which is a good thing :thumb: . Nice. Lucky you! No pics of the PCB? I can't wait to see what everyone does with their octagons.
buy a solder kit, watch a couple videos and do it yourself :p the diodes are preinstalled and the smd leds are presoldered, so that's like 50% of the build done for ya.I'm super busy, might break it, and I also want someone to lube the switches and I probably won't be able to do that consistently or properly on my first try :(.

USPS needs to get off their asses and update tracking. I know they're working today...Haha I'm glad to see there are people as impatient as I am.
Got the wrong colour keyboard. Some guy in Milwaukee is gonna get the wrong one too I guess :) Elton check PMs please, it would be great to resolve this quickly :thumb:

Anyway I just received mine just now :D :DShow Image(http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/15/02/17/f4e36648a702f549b0d0c2a068d7111c.jpg)
2 boxes cause I'm special..
Mine is in the truck for delivery. Should I expect any import charges on the spot?
Just got delivered! The blue grey case looks incredible and it weighs a ton!
Since it's my first time doing a custom build (which is the case with a few of us in here), what are the steps that the more experienced builders follow? Does anyone have a previous build log online that you wouldn't mind sharing?

Had everything ready to go, Just needed to pop in the switches and go really :) Spend a lot of time lubing, stickering and re-springing all of the clears though. I make change out to the vintage blacks in the kbd at the top of the frame as I've been getting used to the 75% layout on them.
Wow haha yes that was fast, how long did it take you to solder it up? Most of us haven't even gotten ours haha

Nice. How long did you spend tuning your switches? No LEDs? :p
Mine was supposed to come today.. but I got the supreme luck of having the US shipper of the package becoming DHL. I am not holding my breath... they missed today and never fail to disappoint me. Thanks to the poster above I got the good idea that I can re-spring and lube my switches with the time I had put aside for assembling tonight. Oh well DHL.How did you discover this? I was under the impression that USPS was handling the stateside delivery.
By the way, has anyone had any experience with ordering from gonskeyboardworks.com? I put a parts order in (nothing custom) on Feb 2nd and I still have not received the order, as well as not being able to get replied to by customer service. This is going to delay my build I think... because I wanted to put new springs in my switches and I guess that is where I ordered them from (thought I had some already). If anyone has any experience with them let me know here or in PM. Can you lube and re-spring a keyboard after it has had the switches soldered in? Seems like it would be a bad idea.... thanks.

I ordered some tuned switches in December for my Octagon and just got them today. So not too bad.

Finally figuring out where to get all my parts. Going to be placing an order with Zeal tomorrow for clear switch tops and white LEDs. Is anyone using SIP sockets for their build? If so, where did you source them from? I like the idea of being able to hotswap LEDs rather than soldering them.
Sorry for all of the questions in here. Just really excited to finally have my first custom.
Thanks for that. I'd rather order everything from you anyways. I'll place in order in a few minutes! Finally figuring out where to get all my parts. I suggest you order the clear tops soon, else it might be sold out by tomorrow.
I've got pre-removed SIP sockets available here: http://zealpc.net/collections/accessories/products/led-sockets-for-removable-leds-mod-5
130x per bag, enough for a 60%. You'll need two bags for Octagon.

I called my wife immediately to ask her to call the post office as I cant be on the phone for a long time while at work. No answer, shes in the shower (her work starts after lunch). Waited 20 mins to call again, she picks up, I explained the situation. She told me hold on. Someone rang the doorbell.
Its USPS. They didnt look for what Apt # it is on the shipping label.

Going to be sending mine to Thechemist very shortly. :thumb: excited indeed.I'm thinking about getting mine to someone who knows more about building than I do, but I'd rather not ship out of Canada. What is an approximate cost of getting one built?
The chemist chargers about 15 Bucks an hour for work. But it varies based on complexity of the build. Question for those of you who have done additional LEDs in your build:
If I'm looking at the bottom of the PCB (the side with the RGB LEDs), is it correct that all the top-side LEDs have their positive (+) leg on the RIGHT?
I've scanned the whole board a few times and it looks like they're all on the right. Some are hard to tell. I just don't want to miss anything. :-[
Hey, so with so many of you receiving and building your Octagons, how are you all handling the right side keys?

Another noobie question for you folks... I was trying to program my octagon with the firmware from the authors site (ducky0113 I think). Anyhow, even though it is in Korean I can understand how it basically works, but when I try the option "Upload Firmware" I get the error that I don't have a DFU Programmer. Am I doing this right? I tried looking up DFU programmer and found no results on the board, and a few on google that seems to program firmware for chips but I have no idea if this is what I should use. So it makes me think I am messing with something I shouldn't. Since this is my first custom, I am trying to figure out how to program it to do what I need such as using a function key to switch the mapping out, or being able to launch a program from a keypress.
How do most of you go about programming your keyboards? Thanks again everyone.
edit: I noticed on the firmware site there was a key highlighted called a "Flip" key... what does this mean?
edit: after searching again, I think I found most of the information I needed, no idea why DFU programmer showed no results earlier. I found a thread with a tutorial.
Yup, announced a few days ago.Damn. I haven't even started the build on my first one, and I'm itching to get this one too.

So I have all the files I think I need. I'm in the 02D Keymapper with my custom layout, but it won't let me save to a hex file. When I click Save on the Save dialog screen I get a Run-time Error 76, then the application crashes to desktop. I tried running it in XP compatibility mode (I'm on Win 8.1) with no luck. Any ideas?
I had no problems installing the Atmel driver. They keyboard works great, in fact I'm typing on it right now. It's just those few keys that aren't quite where I want them yet...

Make an empty file, name it whatever.hex, and overwrite it with the hex file you create in the app.

The replies are all correct... like it said in the guide, put them in the same folder on your root drive if possible... I got the same error you are getting until I realized not to use the "default" name (02_Keymapper_map01.hex) or whatever it gives by default, and just put in "keys" or some small word and it worked.

Oh, and make it in the same directory as the O2D mapper exe.
That's how I've had to do it for my viper and butterfly numpad.

I have tmk firmware running on my octagon but only limited control of the rgb leds for now.
What do you want to know? I will push the sources the next days after some more testing.
If you want to try tmk firmware on your Octagon follow this link tmk firmware (https://github.com/xauser/tmk_keyboard/tree/octagon)

Anyone know how to get the LEDs to work in a way where you press the button then it lights up and fades out slowly?\

You need to set the LED controls in the 02D mapper first. Then it's a matter of pressing the right keys to get it in that mode and set the speed.
So, does the PCB come with any preinstalled firmware? Or would I have to install my own before using?Yes, it comes with a default layout and most keys work properly out of the box. You will need the Windows driver, boot loader, and 02D Mapper to customize it further.
I also added support but it is untested
(Attachment Link)
I also added support but it is untestedI would definitely love to try this out. It worked perfectly with my Phantom. The only issue I'm having is that you can't choose different layouts (ie. 1.5u CTL & ALT). With the Phantom layout, you can choose between ANSI 84, ANSI 87, etc.

anything wrong with the Duck firmware aside from being in Korean?
thanks for the info, didn't realize duck's firmware is not cross platform. what programs do the media keys work on?
foobar already let you set (global) shortkeys, just curious if other programs like VLC/MPC-HC/Spotify support your approach and whether they would clash if you have, say, VLC and Spotify on at the same time

I just installed Spotify, and if it's running, play/pause will control Spotify, volume up and down affect the global volume, next/previous do not affect Spotify.thanks. reading around a bit, it seems like media control keys only work for the last program you have active which seems like both a good and bad thing
If you want to set hotkeys in Spotify, you might want to use a program called Toastify. I use it on my HHKB, and Ctrl + Alt + X = Pause, Ctrl + Alt + Z = Previous, and Ctrl + Alt + C = Forward. It seems to be pretty lightweight, and it also shows you the current song playing when you skip it, or pause.I just installed Spotify, and if it's running, play/pause will control Spotify, volume up and down affect the global volume, next/previous do not affect Spotify.thanks. reading around a bit, it seems like media control keys only work for the last program you have active which seems like both a good and bad thing
Figured I would post this now, even though most are done their builds. I went with Cherry tactile greys with 62g springs and clear switchtops. My first build ever. I don't notice too much of a difference to be honest. I would have grabbed clears but they are sold out every where. This was the next best option, since I planned on swapping the springs anyways. I can't stand the tactile greys without the spring swap though. I tried it for a bit on my Phantom and it was an awful typing experience after a week or two.Figured I would post this now, even though most are done their builds. I went with Cherry tactile greys with 62g springs and clear switchtops. My first build ever. Waiting on the classic beige GB to happen until I get the caps on though. Only an iPhone photo for now. How do you like those compared to Clears?

Does anyone know how to get arrows keys to work? It only works when I use the default layout that 02D Keymapper has. When I use my own layout the "?" on the arrow keys keeps going back to "EMPTY" after flashing.
However, there is one bug that I have for arrow keys setting but some people are not having this bug. As you can see the picture below, the arrow keys are shown as “?”. After u set on the “?” arrow keys on some of your layers, the data entry wont be recorded even u have saved the .hex file
Can you add or change the color that the RGB LED in the PCB cycles through? So far it only cycles green, red, purple and blue. No yellow :D

someone on the classifieds is selling their unassembled silver kit: https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=67302.0. a 2nd GB, if it occurs at all, will not happen in the foreseeable future. if you simply want a 75% layout, there are also a number of alternatives but not so many, as 75% is quite unpopular compared to 60% and TKL
Since i missed the groupbuy, would people who have the keyboard agree that $400 is a reasonable amount to pay for one?
this keyboard really looks perfect for me, i think the layout looks absolutely fantastic as well as the case & the fact that everything but the switches are pre-soldered
i plan on combining this with gateron blacks and GMK caps, it would be very costly but i'd be able to sell other keyboards to pay for it.
to people who have built your octagons - is this keyboard worth the money?
Can anyone tell me what DFU programmer build and octagon software version they used? I can update the firmware to the ATmega32U but then every time i go to upload a hex it says no DFU connected...
If you're using 02D keymapper make sure they're in the same folder as the dfu executable
The only 75% boards I've seen with semi-standard key sizes are the Noppoo Choc Mini 84 and the Keycool 84.there aren't any good stock 75% keyboards, koreans are the way to go with this layout. according to this: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1-vxgQLNZY_rUoBRevfYOynOycvSpctOmS2SJDZuJd5A/pubhtml?gid=1468327763&single=true, there are 35 Octagons on geekhack. your chances of finding one is not high, so if you desire this particular board, it's a good idea to get it now (assuming you're cool with the silver housing). if you just want another board with the same layout, you can contact forum member Kaliet, he makes 75% boards and will take your order. or you can purchase an acrylic case from http://hanaacryl.com/product/?s_category=150 and outfit it with a PCB+ parts from http://winkeyless.kr/en/. both options will be cheaper than acquiring an Octagon from the classifieds
I've also seen the Deck 82, but it has an odd layout (tilde down near space bar and off sized 1 key) and the the KBT Race 2, but it has odd key sizes for the keys on the right.
I can't find any Keycool 84s for sale and the only Choc Mini for sale has red switches. I was hoping for MX clears or browns.
Do you know any other alternatives that I don't know about? $400 is pretty steep for a keyboard, especially when it was originally on sale for $295+shipping+fees (were the shipping+fees really $100?).
Thanks for any input.
Thank you very much Whizzard and TJ! I got everything running now and it is working great! Big props to you guys! :thumb:

Would any of the Toronto area GHers in on this buy be willing to meet with me to help get a switch desoldered so I can finish this build? I have a pump to do it, but I can't seem to figure out how to remove the switch.
Once I get home I will. The issue isn't really with the switch, but the LED. One of the leads from the LED broke up when I was desoldering it, and it's now stuck in the PCB with no lead visible from either side. I'm basically screwed if I was an LED in my caps lock switch. Haha.Would any of the Toronto area GHers in on this buy be willing to meet with me to help get a switch desoldered so I can finish this build? Add more solder to the switch in question. Then try to desolder again.
Post a picture of the switch in question.
Just want to let you know that octagon tmk support moved to this new home:

- I changed the build system to support further keymaps without any Makefile changes
- I Added a space fn keymap

Oh ok, grab an app called AppLocale[1] and launch O2D with the Korean locale.
You'll see the actual arrow symbols when it's configured correctly.
Then configure and flash and you should be good.
Let me know if it still fails and I'll email you a keymap .hex

Has anyone have success programming the RGB below the PCB? (Like which color order should display)
Interesting, I just need to learn to convert my current layout to tmk. I'm having no luck with the 02D Keymapper.Show Image(http://i.imgur.com/QtKgDn6.png)
Is this even the right place to program it on 02D?
Edit: does TMK support LED control for each area of the board? (example in 02D has control for LED in alpha, modifer, F row, etc.)
are there any building instructions for the octagon?
i've got mine all ready to build, stabilisers installed and the switches in place ready for soldering, but it feels like the switches are going to fall out at any moment, am i meant to screw the plate to the PCB before soldering?

There are a couple build logs floating around but no official instructions, no. If they exist they're probably in Korean. But you should be able to figure it out.
It sounds like you may have used plate-mount switches. If you'd used PCB-mount switches then they would attach firmly to both the plate and the PCB, and you'd have a nice stable platform to begin soldering. If you don't have that you'll want to flip it over and support the underside of the plate like tjweir suggested. Make sure all your switches are installed before you begin soldering. If you did it right the switches will be supported by the plate and shouldn't fall out.
I did switches and LEDs all at once because I'm impatient. But it worked out. :P

I am using PCB-mounted gateron switches that i clipped the feet off of to make them plate-mounted, though i have quite a lot of pcb-mounted ones leftover, should i use those instead?

So I read this, and also looked ta the doc in google translate and it doesn't really help with anything. Maybe I'm just dumb but how in the world do we change any of the settings? I set it so all of the LED keys are assigned in my FN layer. I played around with them but I can't figure out what's up. I just want the RGB to always be orange.
I noticed when building mine that the pcb supported doing a 2,75x right shift layout, but it seems to me that the plate doesn't support this, am I right?
Hello everyone! If it's not too much to ask, would anyone be willing to sell a metal sticker? I just purchased an Octagon second-hand, but it does not come with the metal stickers.

Hey again, fellow Octagon owners. I have a predicament! I tried flashing the firmware of my Octagon and now it won't get out of flash mode. It's always recognized as an ATmega32U4 no matter what I do. Can anyone help me with this?
I update my Octagons the same way I used to update my (now sold) Viper: https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=65036.msg1656094#msg1656094
How are you doing it? What OS, what .hex file? tmk or O2D?

Hey tjweir. :)
I'm using Windows 7 as my OS, and going through O2D (Layout: Octagon_Custom, Firmware Type: O2D Custom). I created my own .hex file by editing the defaut Octagon layout. Saved it, uploaded it. It said that the flash was successful, but after restarting, disconnecting, reconnecting, uninstalling the Atmel drivers, it still isn't recognized as a keyboard. Did I seriously break something? D:
i've got an issue and i've no clue how to fix it, my octagon has stopped working. when i plug it in, the lights do not come on and the keyboard doesn't function.
i think it might be an issue with the USB port, could someone advise me on how i could fix this?
When are we going to start the Round 2 Hype?

I should say firstly that I managed to fix my issue and reflash my Octagon to function correctly again. For me, I had a bad flash apparently. Whizzard helped me by providing the original stock .hex file for the Octagon plus his cool layout set up to configure the LED settings.
So by beginning with that, I have to say that your problem sounds remarkably similar to mine, Snipars. It might be that your keyboard is stuck in "flash mode" and is being read as a microcontroller instead of a keyboard. Download the O2D software if you haven't already, get a DFU programmer.
Actually, whizzard's build log and guide is perfect to get all that if you haven't already: http://www.adamfalwell.com/projects/octagon/firmware-setup.html
If you need the original .hex, I'm sure you can contact either me or whizzard. I do hope that this is the problem you're having and not something else! I've read how much you dig the Octagon (I love mine too), so I'd hate for yours to be bricked, but I doubt that's the case! :thumb:

it will be octagon 2 according to what i've been toldFor serious?the rumor is that Duck himself mistakenly posted some sort of render/mockup of the new octagon here. it was deleted soon enough but not before the person whom i conversed with caught wind of it.

Well, guess I'll be getting that! :thumb:
EDIT: If you are correct though, I must say that it's a little soon considering the Octagon release is less than a year old. He must really have some ideas for it. Maaan.

Fantastic board, man! :thumb: Triumph Adler is lookin' good. 75% layouts are so hard to cover properly.
As far as what's up with Duck's future plans, there was speculation in the Lightsaver V2 r2 thread that his next project is the Octagon v2. I know, so soon right? Who knows. I guess we'll have to wait and see. There have been claims that Duck himself accidentally posted mock-ups of Octagon v2 but I've never seen them and it's all through the grapevine.
I'm trying to program the keyboard to have capslock as ctrl. I'm getting an error when I try to save the layout in Duck's software, anyone have a solution?
Sorry if this has been already asked but... will there be another group buy going on anytime soon?

You'll have to map the key or use the default on the octagon. I believe its layer 3 then its Fn + 1 in the number row if I'm not wrong. (Also need to map the Fn key and the right layer to point it at)
The #4 item on my previous post is based on the colors you picked in the 02D mapper.

I think have both but make sure you pick up the v2 in alps config.
So my keyboard feet seem to have lost their grip on the keyboard, what's best to do, buy new ones?

I suppose so! I'd use some foam silicone rubber or neoprene to make the feet and cut it to shape

You'll be looking ~$350 is my guess after shipping and pp fees maybe a little more depending on where you live.
Edit: It'll probably end up closer to $400 than anything if it is similar to Duck's GBs.
And this still doesn't support iso :'(

385000 South Korean Won equals
331.68520 US Dollar
The price for the whole package with the aluminum bottom. From the original's price of $295, it's about $36 more expensive. Shipping to the US for the last buy was $57. So... We can expect a price around $390.
I guess the two piece design is more expensive to mill? The original Orion was a lot more expensive than the Orion v2.
Original was a comparatively simple 1-part case. The 2-part case is more complex and therefore more expensive.
the obvious guess would be that he found some way to lower costs, either from experience or long term deals with other partners

Whatever shop he's dealing with I hope he keeps. The quality and anodizing of the Orion v2 is superb. So good in fact that I've been debating joining the Octagon v2 sale even though I'm not a fan of 75% layouts.
Are you guys using the 7x spacebar layout? I tried it and I thought I would be in heaven but there is hangup: you have to move your left thumb so much to reach the alt since it has been shifted to the left, has any of you guys got used to this or is there an alternative solution?

I'm trying to assign an arrow button on a key and I can't seem to do it since there is a question mark on the buttons in the keymapper, anyone know the solution?

If you're using Windows, then using App Locale to change language settings to Korean would solve the problem. Otherwise, just try and find a way to set the program's language to Korean.
I've been playing around with the 02 KeyMapper. I was able to change the layout but couldn't get the arrow keys to assign them, it keeps going back to "EMPTY"
So I flashed it back to the default by going to File -> New - > 02D Octagon Custom v1.x then saving it as a new hex file
After I flashed it the keyboard is now 'stuck' in DFU mode. When I unplug and plug it again without hitting the DFU key it still goes to DFU mode
When I flashed it manually in command prompt still no luck and keept getting this:Code: [Select]D:\Keyboard programming\DFU\dfu-prog-usb-1.2.2>dfu-programmer atmega32u4 flash main.hex
Checking memory from 0x0 to 0x6FFF... Empty.
0% 100% Programming 0x7000 bytes...
[ X ERROR
Memory write error, use debug for more info.
Am I in big trouble here?
EDIT: Fixed it, I did an erase --forceCode: [Select]D:\Keyboard programming\DFU\dfu-prog-usb-1.2.2>dfu-programmer atmega32u4 erase --force
Erasing flash... Success
Checking memory from 0x0 to 0x6FFF... Empty.
Does anyone know how to get arrows keys to work? It only works when I use the default layout that 02D Keymapper has. When I use my own layout the "?" on the arrow keys keeps going back to "EMPTY" after flashing.
Keep trying the erase force, it should work. It might also be a good idea to restart computer or power cycle completely.
If its loose then it could be possible that its the connector.
Also the atmel drivers I used were from this link http://www.adamfalwell.com/projects/octagon/firmware-setup.html

Seems to be the connector, the keyboard won't connect to any device now. I've tried resolder the connector, it is not loose anymore, but it doesn't work. Do I need to buy a new receptor? Where would a buy the correct receptor for this board?
I think the problem is that one/some of the pins which connect to the pcb got desoldered when the receptor got loose, the thing is the pins are so small I can't get to the with my soldering iron, any trick I can use to reach them?

seems like there should be 5 pins but I only see 3, maybe the 2 are recessed inbetween the others? in any case I can't reach them with my chiseled iron :/
here is a pic, it's a mess I know lol http://i.imgur.com/D8DgWGR.jpg

Is that a V1 PCB?
Hi. I just got the Octagon V2. I am currently using QMK firmware. Is there anyway to make the media keys and volume adjust keys work on windows for this keyboard?
Thank you in advance for your help.
