Title: [IC] Hackdura 70%
Post by: mrbishop on Tue, 31 May 2016, 22:54:50
The Hackdura originated as project Ultrahack an idea to give more function to a compact style keyboard. I have teamed up with Van Keyboards to bring a new van to the the world.  In a tribute to the A-Team TV show this  keyboard is themed around the 1983 GMC Vandura that BA drives in the show.

Features
Open Source
PCB with built on controller (TMK Firmware compatible)
Custom key cap set with extras
*case to be determined in this IC
(sandwich acrylic, acrylic/aluminum sandwich, all aluminum custom machined and anodized)

minimum GB entry level will be 50 orders.
cost is always a factor. we are working hard to ensure affordability as well as tools to ensure everyone can enjoy this board to its full potential.
future revisions of this board will be determined by its initial success.

UPDATED LAYOUT

It's a pretty cool design, but it might be hard for people to commit to a board and a set of caps.
There will likely be those who want one but not the other.

However, Matt3o did pull off something similar to this with his Whitefox keyboard.

Right here :blank:

Not really into the keycaps but I like where the switches are placed :)

This layout is awesome. Really digging it. The caps are so so. I like the teal and gray but the OG colors are meh. But honestly, I think if there are 10 replies, there will be 10 different opinions on the colors. I really think the layout and board speaks for itself.

Heh, much better ;).

Is that backspace intentionally smaller than normal? I guess it would have to be to fit the layout but where would you be source the caps. Plus with the two big thumb keys on the bottom row, it might be fun to experiment with moving backspace next to space.

Layout looks good. If you somehow shave off another 0.25U, this could fit the plethora of 60% cases.

hehe post happy?

we are intending to do a custom key cap set for this. so far color is the biggest factor at the moment but the idea of having the keys and the modifiers 2 different colors allows us up to 4 different key cap set combinations.

Might be cool to see you offer a little adapter kit to fit current GMK/SP/JTK sets to this board instead of going all out with a whole set.

we were going to do that however the switch position covers many of the mounting holes in the 60% cases ending up with only 2 that would actually work. we decided to scrap the idea of hitting the 60% market as to ensure a quality pcb hold down solution. the only way to achieve this, as far as we could decipher, was to do our own mounting points on the PCB and have a custom case created to match.

we may have been able to get 3 total but the concern was a flappy PCB inside the case. long term issues and feel of use was a concern.

that is a great idea. tricky to match all the colors tho. but its defiantly something to consider ;)

Wouldn't this be the size of a 65%?

Ahh. Yea the only gripe I have is some of the caps, such as backspace and tab. By having those sizes, it makes buying a keycap set for this much more expensive as you'd have to buy a Planck set as well or something of the sort on top of non-standard kits.

yeah we are working on re working the key sizes to add compatibility with standard sets or at least more compatibility anyway .

updated Layout:
this will add compatibility for more keys and more already available key profiles and cap sizes.

Seems perfect to me, split backspace, split Spacebar, a few extra keys for fn layers and such, and arrow keys. Colour me interested  :thumb:

Also, I would vote for the sandwich acrylic.

Lovely layout, the keys are cool as well especially the purple ones (purple is my favourite colour, both the teal and black alphas look great with it too) - I'd buy it with or without caps.

Edit: Any idea how much this would be priced at roughly? Just curious so I can start preparing the ole wallet haha.

well anything is one - off at the moment i may be willing to do a group buy for hand wired kits in the near future. i'm currently running a hand wired kit now.

as for cost it would probalby be around 200 ea for a full kit with out key caps. (switches, diodes, teensy, plate, case, etc) assembly services would be offered. i enjoy hand wiring for some reason.  :))

Oh that's great price-wise! I've no experience assembling boards and I'm usually very busy so the fact you offer that for your kits is really cool; had to have the MiniVan kit shipped to a friend so that she can assemble it for me. Maybe I'd have fun learning to do it but I'm lazy, may give it a shot at some point!
