Title: HHKB 2020 lineup to Europe? (Is it coming at all? If, when?)
Post by: YesThisIs on Mon, 11 May 2020, 13:41:56
Hi,

Does anyone have any info about the HHKB's 2020 lineup coming to Europe, possibly in 2020 or at all?

Mainly interested to in DE-layout Classic. Pro2 is outdated in terms of connectivity and build quality is arguably better.

As far as I know, HHKB hasn’t been made in ISO. I doubt the market is really large enough especially since there are multiple ISOs. ANSI is used in their two largest markets (USA/China) so that’s why they manufacture it.

You may be able to work around using JIS for ISO, but it requires some workarounds for the tiny spacebar.

HHKB with Topre switches has only ever been available in HHKB's own layout, and in Japanese layout. That's it.
But if you would be happy with a horizontal Enter key, a large left Shift and lack of physical < key, you could set the keymap in your OS and either use blank keycaps or just ignore that what's printed on some keys is different from what you type.

The Pro2's Bluetooth version may be the older 3.0 but it should be compatible with also newer devices, while the HYBRID is not backwards-compatible with Bluetooth dongles with less than Bluetooth 4.0.
There are also replacement controller boards (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=12047.0) for the non-BT keyboards of the previous generation, programmable and with either USB C or Bluetooth.

There is allready DE-ANSI layout of the HHKB Pro 2.  Blank switches would be fine, but ordering from overseas would cost me almost 300€. This is for the classic version, including shipping and VAT. Pro 2 is sold in Amazon.de for 210€.

If somebody is selling blank switched inside of EU, that would be good aswell, but have found absolutely 0 so far.

Well there is ANSI and ISO layouts. HHKB layout is 90% ANSI.

Also with that PRO2 that amazon.de sells, there is Ä-Ö-Ü buttons printed on to the caps.
Boards that you can get from japan or USA doesn't have these.

E: https://deskthority.net/wiki/HHKB_Professional "Modified US ANSI". And its DE-layout so "DE-ANSI". Got it?

I'm pretty sure that that is just the windows layout and not the physical one. 2 very different things. I've never seen any HHKB with DE caps and I highly doubt that amazon.de sells these.

As aslan pointed out, you're wrong. That's the ANSI layout (it's kind of surprising you can't recognize that) and there are no printing differences, it's printed US ANSI. The German keys will register if you switch it to a German layout, but they're not printed like that.

yup, it's just software side. i wouldn't expect pfu to carve out an official eu presence at any point, the market is just too small.
