Thought I would share here how my time has been spent the last couple weeks. I decided I wanted a benchtop injection molder to fool with and prototype with, and with the backing of one of my IRL friends we have decided to go ahead and purchase one of the nicer (in our price range) benchtop injection molding devices.

My first project with this is going to be PCB mount stabs. So before even purchasing the unit I decided to start with the mold design first as the machine itself is much easier to attain then getting a mold done.

My plan is to improve on the cherry PCB stab a little and be able to produce colored, clear and swirled stabs. I have spent a good amount of time so far re-creating a pre-clipped cherry stab in CAD and heres my progress so far:

Wow, I didn't realize something like this could be done. You'd have to have clear/translucent keycaps to make the most of it, but this is amazing!

Definitely make them clipped, would be a shame to have to mangle something so nice!

Been away for a minuet. Basically got burnt out on all the artisans in the game and retreated into keyboard building and had some fun and now im back.


Status updates:

1) Although I put a **** ton of work into my stab design, its on hold indefinitely. I got quotes for tooling that wernt really that bad but were enough to make me realize that I would have to make/market/sell an absolute **** ton of them to make up the costs taking a huge amount of time that I just strait up dont have.
 
2) Due to popular demand, Lucky Cat is coming back with a vengeance, in MX, ALPS and soontm in Topre and/or TMX. The new Lucky Cat has an improved base and more precision in casting.

They are pretty cool when installed thats for sure. Figured out a decent way to make them fit the M3 screws. Bumpons are supposed to be arriving today. My cast Duck feet set will come drilled for screws with 4 flush mount screws and bumpons.

Heres a purple with light purple insert installed on one of my clueboard bottom plates, when i test fit them.

Holy crap, these caps are amazing! The level of detail is gorgeous; I'm afraid my photos don't do it justice. I was also lucky enough to have been sent a bonus orange Eye keycap. Small update on Budai: Ive made some changes to the profile and the width of the cap. Its now lower and more skinny. Working on a TMX stem this and next week that may require me to completely scrap the current version and start over. But thats fine as I want this cap to be perfect!

Ill try and get a pic together comparing the versions I have done and the differences sometime in the near future.  :thumb: :thumb:

The coloring is super sick. The jade is translucent, making the other colors pop out. I agree, a bit chaotic, but the concept is awesome.

Updates:

Ive been slammed at work last last month or so, and I was also forced to move my entire casting operation so I been kinda slacking on getting everything up and going again basically due to working too much. Ive managed to start a few molds but not much too much going on right now.

Currently im still working on Budai, I needed to clear some issues up with how wide he was so I gave him smaller beads and made him lower by a good amount (even though you cant tell in the pic below). Heres a pic of the 3 revisions ive gone thru, and I think I might like the V1.5 the best and would love to hear your guys opinion on which one you like more out of v1.5 or v2. The only difference between v1.5 and v2 is the bead ends and the positioning.

I had some success with a TMX stem and I did some testing and ended up not liking the fit 100% so im in the process of making revisions to the TMX stem. Budai is being produced as MX and ALPS anyway though. I dont really have any type of time for a huge sale for a while until my IRL work cools off unfortunately. v2's smile and cheeks are a little wide. v1.5 is a little less exaggerated and the detail is sharper / less cartoony. Both are great regardless; I could go either though I generally prefer the v1.5, and I would be ecstatic to own such amazing alps artisans. My buddy is a Budai fanatic since a very young age, so he is definitely keeping an eye on this one.

Very cool, most of the colors were sold out by the time I rolled in so I went with a mystery bag. I really like the lucky cats and also really like the Budai. That "Coming Soon" is a tease.

I had some down time last night because I ran out of mold release spray stuff and had to order some new stuff so I decided to try out sculpting on one of my synths, I was having a hard time thinking of an idea so I thought I would re-do one of my old designs, the Ent. The Ent used to be a 1.25 mod cap:

As one of my first sculpts I felt there was so many things wrong with the Ent, so ive set out to keep the same ascetic as the original but refine the shape and height and form factor. So heres my rough start:

These all look great!

On the budai however, the "necklace" around the top of his head sorta makes him look like he's wearing a clown wig.... Maybe that's just me but now I can't unsee it :-[

I think he would look more recognizable with the necklace on the bottom, or maybe ditch that and add big-ass earlobes. Or both I dunno

Any chance there will be any snot nosed Budai's in the store? I'm regrettably trying to stay away from artisans that I cant match to a keyset, but the unicorn snot, it calls to me. (And a keyset similar I'm sure will eventually come out).

Alps yes! The plan is for all 3, MX, ALPS and Topre. Im still working on my Topre stem so that is a little ways out (but i am very close to having the mother done). ALPS is being produced alongside MX but in much much smaller quantities. I definitely learned my lesson with ALPS artisans (there is very low demand) so there is about 1 ALPS cap being produced for every 15 MX right now.

Alright, 97% of packages including international went out this morning! You should all receive your caps soon!


Most all MX caps are sold out accept for a handful of keys! Im going to leave the items up till this evening at 8pm (or if they sell out it will come down sooner), then im going to call this sale over! Time for a much needed break and concentrating on taxes.  :(

I will have pics of the grabbag colorways in a few days once I get a chance to edit the photos. I plan on making some sort of imgur album or google spread sheet to keep track of the Budai colorways.

Glad to hear it arrived safely.

The rubber cases were ordered on ebay. I got the 7ml instead of the 9ml so the cap just barely fits in there haha, but it does fit at least! Also, not everyone got one of the rubber cases, it was kindof a random thing on who got one (there are only 25 of those cases available in this sale.).

samoas, That Mystic Purple one glows purple, not super bright but it does glow, that specific GID powder charges best in direct sunlight ive found

Speaking of things getting places, a new USPS employee scanned ALL the international orders incorrectly. I had a customer let me know that the tracking numbers are showing the packages coming back to me! (yikes!) So I obviously freaked out and went down to the post office, the postmaster told me they were scanned wrong BUT, it shouldn't matter. He told me that he is 99.9% positive that they will go thru just fine but the tracking will be misleading. So, either they will go thru as planned and the tracking will look wrong, OR, they will all show up back at KCD tomorrow and I will have to re-ship them. Either way, you will all get you caps! Dont worry!

Hey, just got my Budai key cap. Got the cloud monk and it looks amazing! Only issue is this that the hole on the stem of the cap is to small and won't fit in a switch. And there is also a black dot on the inside which I usually would care about, but in a translucent keycap you can see it.

Idk what can be done about this? I really want to add this to my Planck.

The stems are a tight fit, and it clearly stated that in the item description, they do fit better once you get them on once. I did test fit them all though and I would not have sent you a bad cap. My advice is to just force it on, and if you somehow manage to mess up your switch, I will personally fix your board!

Could you please either PM me here on GH with a pic of what is wrong with the coloring or email me: badnewscaps@gmx.com and I will try to help you out! But please keep in mind that all artisan caps are unique in some way, i hand pour them all myself so there is bound to be variation in colorways, that is also clearly stated in the terms on the website.
