Title: [IC] GMK Retrotrip | Now in GROUP BUY!

This set takes most of its inspiration from some of the more vibrant colours used in the 80s, specifically deriving them from windbreakers and ski wear.


Of course, these sorts of colours aren’t exclusive to fashion, with neons and pastels heavily inspiring other aspects of culture in that era and beyond. This prominent style still held influence well past the 80s, carrying through into the early/mid 90s by way of TV shows, technology and interior design.


Ultimately, despite seeming to clash at first glance, I find these colours still hold up with time, and with the resurgence of 80s fashion and inspiration in the modern era, really wanted to bring them into keycap form.

I chose to use GMK WS1, PANTONE  224 C, PANTONE  2725 C and PANTONE  3275 C respectively

I did attempt to use RAL colours, which are preferred by GMK, but felt there were too many compromises in the colours which would end up losing the heart of the set.

Not sure how I feel about the 3 color spacebar kit and accent esc in 40s. I feel that it drives up the cost for a small addition. Other than that IC looks good and well fleshed out. Nice job and glwic!

For the 3 colour spacebars, I really wanted accent spacebars, and then to cover both the base kit and the alt alphas, I included the other 2 colours. Definitely considering removing some support somewhere in there though! As for the 40s kit, I am very 50/50 on the inclusion of the accent esc in the 40s too, so depending on how the IC form goes, the accents might disappear

It’s a nice colourway, not too in your face while still having nice contrasts and a retro feel.

It does make me think a little of a desaturated GMK Future Funk, but that’s just me.

Oh and a 1.25U enter in the 40s kit for UT47.2/Whimsy support would be lovely.

I can't believe I missed Whimsy support! Its one of my most anticipated boards this year and the 1.25u enter isn't there. Its something I'll definitely look at including in the next revision of the 40s kit!

I really wanted to be as inclusive as possible with my kitting options and did think of including the Norde kit, but for a first time designer, it unfortunately probably wouldn't make MOQ, so I didn't think it would be fair to include it in the IC. You could say the same of the 40s kit, but I made steps to make it as light as possible without missing any important keys in order to keep costs down, which can't really be achieved with a Norde kit I'm afraid.

Its something I considered early on, but I found the green was a little too bold as an accent colour, clashing a little bit with the other colours. The set has evolved a lot since those early stages, so I'll give it a 2nd look and see if it works a bit better now!

I tried to cover as much as I could without massively bloating the set. Keep your eyes peeled for novelties in the next week or so

Thank you so much! Like I said before, not 100% where the comparison even came from, but I'm super glad the colours match the theme, was something I fretted over for a while pre-IC!

I have never once seen a GMK set with a 3U spacebar (with the exception of ThinkCaps which had one in the extension kit), so that seems very unlikely.

Hi! I really considered 3u space, but I felt the spacebar kit was already chunky enough as it was, and I really didn't want to further bloat it. The kits went through several iterations but honestly there was never a way for me to happily fit 3u space in, so even though ideally I do want to include it, I really don't think I can.

3u isn't an issue for me personally and I'm not sure if you are being serious or not (if so apologies). But here are some gmk sets with 3u spacebars starting from most recent, a full list would go much further back.  :-X
