Yep, I was just wondering this too. I would say quite different depending on the surface you have it on. I'd like to hear it on a wooden surface and then on a gaming mat. I figure those two surfaces would include the majority of users interested in the board.

just thinking like if we are able have a full rectangular ring of rubber (black or clear in color) instead of some rubber bump-ons, which will eliminate the gap between the board and the table.

Thanks for the input! I'll see what I can do there but it's hard to make the surrounded rubber feet happen though. Rubber feet will have to be customized and it might cost quite a lot.

@Icy, any chance you could perhaps add an Acrylic or Polycarbonate diffuser to the bottom? Nothing massive, just to cover the bottom? I like the design, but having a fully open bottom makes me think I’ll type solder onto my deskmat eventually. :(

Without a bottom, doesn't the sound resonate off the desk and make it much louder? Seems like a strange design choice.

I think it would be a good idea to use a smaller logo or at least have some spacing above the logo. As you can see on the linked picture the upper edge is not straight because the engraving of the logo starts there, for me this is pretty ugly.

For anyone worried about the PCB being exposed, could just make a transparent acrylic / polycarbonate sheet layer that goes under the PCB and gets screwed on to the case with the same bolts as those connecting the switch plate/PCB (probably with some spacers inserted between the switch plate and the acrylic sheet). Can add some underglow LEDs to the PCB to illuminate it when in use.

interesting design.. I like its overall look .... unsure about how the lack of bottom would impact the sound, which is important to many..... less so worried about endangering the PCB, but that is also a concern

Agree with this... I think the logo design is just fine, and suits the theme of the project -- but being able to see its edges like this from the 'seated' position is a but less desirable to me.
If it were just a uniform cutout..... |____________| .....itd be *slightly* better..
as is |___||___||__||_____| is kind of bleh to me.
I don't think you're going to see the cut edges from a normal seated position, because of the bevel on the rear edge.

It's definitely a unique design I will be curious on how final prototype looks. to be honest I'm not the biggest fan of the large logo on the back but probably not a deal-breaker. Always nice to see something different thanks for thinking outside the box. Could be interesting

Second CNC sample completed. There are few places still need to be fixed and I will be placing another sample soon.
This...sounds like a recipe for disaster. Particularly with an unprotected PCB. Messy eaters beware!

Go with your original design. Not really sure how the pcb will get damaged in real world use unless youre constantly transporting it. Of course any exposed electronics will be at risk but if the guy wants to make a bottomless board then he should....

On the renders, the switches are facing with the LEDs up, not down. This can cause interference with cherry profile caps. If you're not including a PCB you can disregard all of this.
Also, as long as the PCB is completely standard, it might be better to not include a PCB and suggest people buy the h87a instead, as it's part of a larger GB and will be cheaper.

Ah well, its a minor thing tho, don't mind it. But still would be nice if the logo is just slightly smaller so it doesnt sit so much on the edge.

for pcb protection, just add an acrylic to the bottom of the pcb like all the bent steel case. Look up bent steel case if you want to see an example.
Basically use the same mounting holes for the plate and just add spacers in between.
