GMK - Sky Dolch
« on: Fri, 19 February 2016, 20:17:58 »
Just released on Originative. What do you guys think? I'm tempted to buy a set but the exchange rate for me would mean this set would cost me around $265 which is quite ridiculous.

https://www.originativeco.com/products/sky-dolch?variant=11176278725

I believe these were for dropped on Massdrop around 6 months ago and they just got delivered this week as well.

I think it looks really nice.  Quite a bit better, in fact, than most of the concepts that get made these days.  However, I still prefer the white legends on Dolch.

Sticking to the original cause it's just right. No need to change anything about it IMO.

I like the dark grey and blue combination.  The more I look at this set the more I think it would be perfect if they would just have gone with either dark grey or black lettering on just the letter keycaps.  Hell, somebody slap some regular dolch (whte letter keys) on this set for us and lets see what it looks like then.

Yeah, yay for Aussie dollar exchange rates and international shipping :(

Out of curiosity, how does GMK compare to SP? I've got a set of SP Dolch, which has been holding up nicely.

They're both ABS from what  I can see, so the only real difference seems to be aesthetics and the profile?

Im having similar feelings towards this one.

Loving the colors but don't really think it beats classic OG Dolch.
If my hyperfuse would have arrived by now it would definitely be easier to skip this one xD

Don't forget that tray doesn't hold well during shipping - cue the other GMK set, which I can't recall the name of - which caused scratches!

Sheraton told me that GMK had re-engineered the trays for shipping and these ones don't have the issues of those seen in TA

This is true, I have been in contact with GMK as I was thinking of starting a GB for them, but they are more expensive and have mechanical latches (whatever that means).

There are 6 latches or nubs. They hold the top and bottom tray tight together. You can release the latches to open the tray up. I wouldn't say the quality of the plastic is the best, but it's perfect for storing keysets

Takes too long to fiddle about putting keycaps back in a tray.  Much quicker and easier to chuck them in a sandwich bag :thumb:

Don't forget that tray doesn't hold well during shipping - cue the other GMK set, which I can't recall the name of - which caused scratches!

Sheraton told me that GMK had re-engineered the trays for shipping and these ones don't have the issues of those seen in TA

Pics or I don't believe it.

This is true, I have been in contact with GMK as I was thinking of starting a GB for them, but they are more expensive and have mechanical latches (whatever that means).

https://www.originativeco.com/products/keycap-tray

There are 6 latches or nubs. They hold the top and bottom tray tight together. You can release the latches to open the tray up. I wouldn't say the quality of the plastic is the best, but it's perfect for storing keysets

cool.  the trays that came with TA only had 3 nubs.

i haven't used my tray since i got it, but i'm wondering whether the keys will just fly out everywhere when trying to open the tray.  i'll have to try it out sometime.

I like mine.  I find that adding any sort of mod kit (CMYW, Dolch Colour Pack) makes it very visually crowded.

Looks nice! What about just the cyan modifiers? And maybe a matching artisan on esc?

Here's an album of CMYW and Colour Pack. http://imgur.com/a/hwARl

I pulled out a KatzenKinder blank that matches pretty well.  Might shop around for something else to match it.

I feel like the white legends add just too many colours, especially when they're a main focus.  Overall it's a great set, but I think that mod packs will have to be made specifically for this set.

Slightly unrelated, but I've been thinking of pairing these mods with Miami Odessa, and you've just sealed that decision! And yeah, I agree with you on the fact that the white adds too many colours with sky dolch.

Forgot to post this.  The texture of the keys factory new is great, and GMK seems to break in pretty well, so I'm excited to see how they are in a few months.

Best I could get before my cat needed attention.

Since they're ABS the texture will eventually smooth out, but I enjoy them at that stage as well.

Holy shiiiiit, do u see that sexy tray it comes with!? I want a cpl of those!!

It's the terrible GMK tray that does nothing.
The tray does a fine job when properly packed. But with Triumph Adler, Massdrop's famous fulfillment center basically threw some loose crumpled up packing paper on top in an oversized box and then shipped them around the country.

Yeah, the tray may be great and all, but how about when you open it? Won't you spill your caps all over the place? Even when opening it carefully, there's going to be some Jack-in-the-Box going on.

I ordered two sets of TA, which I think actually helped them arrive safely (thanks to the extra weight against one another). And I didn't experience any problems while opening the trays. In fact I still use them to store the sets.

They seem to be better. I'm going to pick a couple up next time they have a keyset I want, save on shipping a little.

I wonder how the new trays would fare if shipped upside down.

It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

FINE!!!  I have ordered this set and some trays!

I find the old GMK trays rubbish for shipping,  but great for storing/stacking your sets. If these are like those,  I'll still be happy with them for storage purposes....  The pop connectors on the old trays require a little skill though when opening,  or there are caps everywhere :)

I do find the tray even when not shipped and just opened up not good, maybe I was too stupid or did not open the tray careful enough - the keys did never stay where they should stay.

You and I have different experiences.  If I so much as twist the tray a little or tilt it slightly, caps go flying out of place.  A tiny jostle and stuff is flipped.

I think the key is the little bubble-clips in the center of the shell. Between H and J, and to the left of the up arrow key. If those are squished and not properly clipped, you're gonna have a bad time. In my case they are working fine.

So my order arrived from Originative, I love this set,  but I wanted to talk about the key cap tray.

This version of the tray is far better than the older version. The locks are still a pain,  clunky,  but the trays are solid,  way more solid than the others,  the keyset stayed I  place on shipping.

So I think for storage purposes,  this tray is great.

for anyone that actually has the set, do the cyan legends blend with the green dolch caps? In pictures it just looks a bit too close for my liking.

I had my reservations but I broke down yesterday and bought this set, as well as the CMY mods, and the CMK spacebar group buy. I also am in on the GMK cherry logo pack. I am hoping to find some synergy in all of these kits, but after reading some of XX7's comments I am second guessing it. Either way I am excited to receive this set. Eventually it is going on a Winkeyless B.mini EX2 I also just ordered. RIP wallet.

Gets GMK set, talks about tray :))

The cyan on the gray of the alphas doesn't have enough contrast, IMO, especially for the smaller legends.  That combo is why my Hyperfuse stays in the bag.

Cyan on charcoal looks really great though!

i picked up one of these sets.  it's actually quite nice, despite the bars.  note that it's a pretty dark colorway, and it really has a totally different feeling than dolch.  the cyan legends almost look like they glow.

the exchange rate for me would mean this set would cost me around $265 which is quite ridiculous.

Yeah it's pretty painful, poor'ol Canadians suffering the same fate.

And yet I'm still considering it  :'(

No, one huge group buy of GMK keycaps shipped in similar trays that almost all broken open and spilled keycaps all over the place, resulting in scratches on many keycaps during transit.  This is supposed to be second version of the tray that eliminates that problem.

Does anyone have a chance to put some rgb modifiers on the sky dolchie? I really can't decide if it's a yes or a no no...

Can't really get my hands on a classic dolch set with ISO, so wondering if "sky" in sky dolch would play nice with rgb.:)

It does look amazing with ordinary dolch though, so sky symbol colors instead of the white ones should't really stand out...if someone has a chance to try it, please let me know.  :thumb:

Here is mine (from a potato) - the cyan really pops in person. If someone has a "control" R3 caplocks replacement they would be willing to part with, let me know (I believe the massdrop sets came with it). I'll buy or trade for any sky dolch or regular dolch keys that i'm not using.

I hope I see something like this with a green font color, something among the lines of GMK's AE code, some time in the future. But considering that GMK has pretty high MOQ's and ridiculous prices (for me at least) I don't think it will ever happen.

I really love these, but I cannot justify spending more on the keycaps then the board.

but damn, these look sooooooooooo good...

Solution: buy a more expensive board :p
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect.

I wanted to purchase a set but having trouble for the bottom row
1u Alt, 1.5u Meta, 6u space bar
Any suggestion :-[?

Wish I saw this earlier

You can hunt the 1.5u blanks from one of the earlier Dolch extras packs, it was probably Originative, or you can buy/use the dark Gateron blanks, would go well

For spacebar: http://pimpmykeyboard.com/dsa-spacebars-pack-of-1/ - you can select one 6u color from here

As a better suggestion, get the blank from here too: http://pimpmykeyboard.com/dsa-1-5-space-pack-of-4/ - funnily GX is out of stock, it's the color of the Dolch dark

DSA is extremely comfortable for spacebar + bottom modifiers, they just sit a bit higher than Cherry's, but you can sand/shorten them

This is one of my dream keysets. It has just the right amount of color and it's not too "in your face." It's just so expensive

Got the cyan accent pack!

Where did you get those cyan blanks? Those did not come from the accent pack right?

No, they were from the extras of the GMK Cyan, I don't remember how much, but they were probably $4+ ea or sth
