[IC] Transparent MX switch top cover --multiple color
« on: Sun, 17 February 2013, 01:43:12 »

7/29/2013 Update
Samples will arrive today!  and Group Buy thread will be released soon

7/24/2013 Update

The reason why i decide to pack every 200 in one is that

200=104/105+87+some left over
200= 3*GH60 +some left over also

generally one bag will be enough for two boards.(or three small boards) there will be about 10 left overs in case if you lost or break a couple of them

7/22/2013 Update
200 pieces a package, will be around 80$ without shipping and PP fee

danielucf is going to do proxy jobs for me. say thank u to him.

7/19/2013 Update
This group buy is decided! will be on in a couple monthes due to manufacturing
There will be three colors available: MX RED, MX White and Transparent]

pictures will be provided ASAP

i am looking for a CONUS distributor who ships all of them for me, very thank you!!

Notice! i am only the North American Distributor.
Any buyer who is located in Korea, Vietnam.... except Europe, due to Policy i can't sell them to u, very sorry, but there is an Asia Distributor starting a GB soon

hi, everyone
as we know, there are some rare switches with transparent top cover, most of them are black switches. i saw the last picture several days ago and i have one idea:

WHY NOT MAKE THESE TRANSPARENT COVER MYSELF?
if we have a red steel plate, red switches, and a red aluminum case, WHY WE LEAVE THE SWITCHES BLACK ??!!

YES, WE WANT THEM RED!!!!

i mean like this!

for one second, i think i am a talent  :p

Covers won't have cherry logo, but fit all the current MX switches

nothing has started yet, and i think i need to reach a minimum of 20,000
yeah, that is a lot.. but if everyone get 500, 100 of you will take 50,000 and they won't be expensive at all!!!!

and i am looking for someone hold this GB if it is a GB,

oh, ok.. before u get exciting,
please take one minute to fill in this IC form!

Attention! Colors such as "RED for MX Red" is pure unclear Red as same as the MX red switch, if u want transparent red, plz choose the transparent one
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/18zQ-mV05pnRHYQWkejVM6b66yQDWxCvZBDBS5p0mYBQ/viewform

and see results here
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AtbJB-WCUPFidGFsY3h5eTkyclA0dXV1NmlsU0RTZ0E&usp=sharing

--------------------------------------------ALL Updates--------------------------------------------------

2/16
about 5000$ to make a nice model for this, won't cost too much for just producing pieces
they are made of ABS, so far.

and i am thinking about making every 200 a pack, so it is just enough for a 87 and a 104. any good suggestion? tell me here!

ALSO, i want it be global, get my point? sell to Europe/ Vietnam / Korea !! so that it may be easier to reach the minimum.  Looking for host.

GOOGLE FORM UPDATED

2/17 for silver, i am sorry there is no silver ABS. it also means, all ABS color is possible!

very thank you every GHer,
Best Regard,
i am one mamber of KeySign FacTory

This is real interesting.  I am in for a bunch of these.  I had the same idea actually, and I think many people are interested in this.  The only thing to finish this off are clear keycaps.

what would be the difference between clear and transparent? is the transparent just frosted/textured?

MX clear is more like white/clear and Transparent is very clear as pictures showed
see the first picture, there is the transparent cover on a MX clear, the clear switch is like white. there is the difference.

MX clear is more like white/clear and Transparent is very clear as pictures showed

so transparent is frosted, and clear is a milky one. got it.
i still want a clear one as in clear clear.

won't you run into patent issues from Cherry with doing this in the US or EU?

Might be worthwhile to look into the Kailh Cherry MX Clone switches: http://www.reddit.com/r/MechanicalKeyboards/comments/147w7i/the_ripster_switch_guide_to_the_kailh_cherry_mx/
As they already have the basic shape clone. I'm not sure if the top housing is the same and would fit into a cherry base, but if it does this likely would be the cheapest way to-do this

p.s. a little bird told me that there will be extremely limited quantities of the real transparent cherry switches for sale at GH in March sometime....

i see the pictures, Kailh is a Chinese keyboard company, be famous of its bad quality of the clone switches, really....

what i want is just a top cover fitting all the MX switches, no logo, no any marker, it is just  a replacement piece, like all keycaps, i don't really think it will run into patent. anyway i will ask someone professional, thank u for ur attention.

Good idea, but switch tops won't even been seen unless you get transparent caps, which I don't think most people like.

I think something more useful is for you to get mx stems made for cheap. It's ridiculous to pay 80cents for a whole mx clear switch to only harvest the stems. So maybe make duplicates of stems in mx reds, clears, and browns. I'm guessing blue/green will be much more expensive because it's a 2-piece design.

Copyright infringement is another story.

think about all the color is the same under your keycaps, that is really cool, and i believe many people will like it.

and two main reaseons i don't want to make any stems are: 1. quality. These stuff will be produced by a great chinese plastic factory. it is OK to make the top but not the stem. A stem is a moving part under high pressure, There have been a lot of clone switches such as Kailh above, but it is really easy to break, we don't have that kind of German industrial ability. instead, a top cover is so simple, we don't push it, or use it. it is only for good looking and keep dust away.
2. keep the stem market simple,  i don't want to clone any of the stems since they are made by Cherry, not by someone else and not replaceable, switches stem is the most important part of a mechanical keyboard. i  somehow " respect" the stems. if i made exactly the same stem, like the reworked cherry red ESC, everything will be massed up

It's like people know info on what's coming and don't divulge it. Similar to GMK with the authentic cherry DS. My guess is that these clear housing will come from sherryton in March, because they were already planned a long time ago and either being produced right now or sorted/shipping.

Ok I think some folks are getting the wrong idea. If anyone frequents DT, you'll see someone there has several pcbs of clear housed blacks.
Those are the ones being mentioned, that will be spread around GH in march by someone who is buying a pcb. It really has nothing to do with this, just very limited and original cherry.

You know, since Cherry made them at one point as a I guess 'custom' order for Nixdorf, maybe we can get them to make some again, though the order would probably need to be excessively large like 10,000 switch.
While I can see the arguement that color ones will really make no difference, the clear top do help for backlight as it help spreads the light more evenly. Truly I am surprised one of the bigger lots of backlight board company like Ducky hasn't requested them from Cherry already.

I filled out the form as well, only for transparent like the OP. The first question of "Are you interested in it? Yes/No" is a bit superfluous. If we fill out all the options in the form, we're obvious interested.

That is true, but if you just pick the most popular color and then just decide on 1 switch type... you could end up with lower cost in the end possibly. Also the possibility of having the entire housing in X color top and bottom. It is just a thought and might be worth a check.

no, i am looking for a good plasctic factory to hold this. seems like the model will be very complex and hard to make. i have asked two and they can't do this.

3D printers are not really accurate enough for these, even when ordering from professional services such as shapeways. Kinruan, have you checked out www.protomold.com? You can get a quote immediately by just uploading your CAD files, and it seems like the molds can be made pretty cheaply too, but it all depends on the complexity of the design (obviously). I know for a fact that parts of the upper housing can be simplified... as long as the design is not overly complex it shouldn't be too expensive. Btw, I'm not a newbie, I'm just a lurker here, I'm more of a DT guy.

very thank u for ur advice. i will check on the website and see how it goes. At least i have to keep the LED whole on the top, and i am thinking about reduce a lot of details of it. u can just open one and see how complex the switch top is. it is small and accurate. that is Germany industry. that is cherry.

That is true, but if you just pick the most popular color and then just decide on 1 switch type... you could end up with lower cost in the end possibly. Also the possibility of having the entire housing in X color top and bottom. It is just a thought and might be worth a check.

Getting the whole thing in transparent would certainly be interesting, and I'm sure you'd be able to get other forums interested and on-board too.

I heard back from Cherry rep, Cherry does not want to make them at all, and claimed they never have even though I gave picture proof LOL! So I guess press on with the 3rd party and new molds and stuff.

If we are doing a custom mold, why not make the mold friendly to switch modding when LED's are installed?  ie, similar to WFD's mod where he dremels out the LED section of the cover so the cover can be removed without needing to desolder the LED.  Would be super hot for those that like LED'ed keyboards.

That is really weird they claim not to have made them, maybe Nixdorf got someone else to do it, while lending the drawings for the mould from cherry?

I really, really dig the idea about the modded LED holes incorporated in this!

Well, I think it is more that ZF has no idea what Cherry was doing back in the 90's and before. Who knows what kind of records they kept on custom order stuff and where or what state those records would be if they haven't shredded them after the required record keeping period.

Not sure if this was brought up before, but it may be a good idea to run a second GB at the same time for the piece that easily removes the switch tops. Just throwing this out there as I would be interested in both that, and the new covers.

You'd be referring to Beast's switch tools which are all handmade by The_Beast himself. I believe he was planning on doing an R2 of the GB for them sometime soon but not sure when.

no word on an R3 but I'm hoping in R4 for wood handles to be added.

80$ for 200, ouch.. that is quite pricy, almost the costs of the entire switch. 0.40$ each.

I have to do a bit of rethinking here.

Yeah the cost is pretty high, so this is more for those who love pure visuals lol. I must say though, I bet this will allow for some sick customization.

R2 kind of already happened it was a fairly quick, "get em outta here" done in his classified thread.

no word on an R3 but I'm hoping in R4 for wood handles to be added.

Ohhh so this is how that worked. Alright, I am still fairly new around here lol. Guess i'll just have to watch the classifieds.

ah, so that means the more orders we get the cheaper it will become? because the model fee will be divided into different orders?

so lets hype this thing guys!!! ;)

I would be interested in a package of 100 or 65, but I have no use for 200. Why not smaller packages? Oh and you need to advertise this so we can reduce the price, it's a bit high atm but I think a lot more people are actually interested in this, they just haven't seen it yet. Maybe put a link in your signature or sth.

I'm still interested.  Any idea when the GB will be up?  Also, we'd probably get way more order volume with $40 100/pc sets instead of $80 200/pc sets...

Agreed. I'd like to get all three colors and I'll only be using these on 60% boards, so 100/pc sets would work better for me.

Makes sense. However, I would be more inclined to get all three colors, and thus 300 vs. just 200 in one color. Just a thought.

Apparently Korea already had a small run of these, they do look pretty damned amazing. They did alps first, but I think my friend has one with MX. White is honestly the only color we need, it'll look like whatever color the pcb is underneath
Keyboards:
Filco Majestouch 2 - Sakura Edition [MX Blue]
Filco Majestouch 2 - Lotus Edition [MX Brown]
Realforce 23ub - Modded with 55g Domes.

Did you mean transparent? Transparent will kinda look like the slider underneath, the PCB will not be visible at all since you still have the bottom part of the switch.

what if someone want 104 or 105? that will take a lot of time packing specific numbers of covers in one single bag,

200=104/105+87+some left over( if you lost or break a couple of them)
200= 3*GH60 +some left over also!

Most of the time when you see springs or switches for sale it's 100, the reason is that most mech users have a TKL or even a 60%, the full size boards are simply not as popular.

Your argument is that somebody with a full size has not enough, and if he has a TKL as well 200 would be pretty perfect. Well why should that person not be able to buy 2x100? By forcing 200 per order you only get that people are splitting up orders, and that will end in less ordered covers:
With 200, one order is enough for 3 60% boards, so three people with each a 60% can split up that order. Then you sold 200 covers.
With 100 pieces per bag you will have 3 people who each buy a bag, they won't split orders because there is not enough for two boards, and the buyers probably won't mind having a few in spare. Then you sold 300 covers.

Yeah it does seem like people are more inclined to order multiple 100 packs instead of just a single 200 pack.

How easy will these be to break? I'm guessing there will be a small prototype batch or something to test?

or... this might be a bad idea but. why not sell in different packages ie. 65, 90, 110, with 3 different prices.

60% kit = 65 pieces = 26$
80% kit = 90 pieces = 36$
fullsize  = 110 pieces = 44$

so people can choose a color for that particular board. I think like would encurage more people to buy. but again that puts more work to the proxy person.

What would have been great if we ordered our own molds would be to modify them to allow for the LED to slide through the switch top cover. This post illustrates it quite well:

I used a dremel to grind it down like that.  I still had to trim off some of the extra plastic with a small cutter when I was done...but I only did 3 pieces for my QFR. :))

It would be awesome if these switch tops were pre-modified...that would save me A LOT of time when I mod my Shine 2.

Problem with a prototype is that the mold itself already costs 5000$ according to the OP.

Without the cherry logo, that would cause problems with copyright. Kinruan has no mockup, but apart from the missing logo I think they will be pretty much the same. However I wonder if cherry would actually make a run of colored covers? Anybody got contacts at cherry? I could ask at ZF but the factuory they have here is producing transmissions so I don't think they could help me out.

I heard back from Cherry rep, Cherry does not want to make them at all, and claimed they never have even though I gave picture proof LOL! So I guess press on with the 3rd party and new molds and stuff.

Curious about how brittle these will be.  It's easy to bend the tabs on the housing tops when opening switches with a mini screwdriver, and if one is not careful, those tabs can bend farther than seems safe.  But normal black housing is quite flexible, so no harm is done.  For some reason I associate clear like that with more brittle plastics.

Yeah, Plastic flexibility is important.
Don't want them to crack if we try to open them repeatedly.
