Just get yourself an iPhone :)  Mashby takes some amazing photographs with his!  This is my camera, and it's far from top of the line.  Was a more budget-friendly bridge camera when I got it in 2011.

The most important thing I've found is 1. knowing your "instrument" well (manual + lots of practice), 2. strategic lighting, 3. composition.  You don't need a fancy DSLR to take good photographs.  I think $80-100 can get a "good enough" camera these days, and the rest would be well spent on some lamps and a tripod.

Tried that, it is worse than my current setup.

My current setup: http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=39675.msg783890#msg783890

Except that one of the legs on the tripod is loose and it won't stand up by itself any more.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Hehe, I mean a "real" tripod.  Something that could be compact or extend when needed to stand on the floor and be tall.  Also for macro photos, it's definitely better to have more powerful zoom and place your camera a bit farther away.  Another note: taking a photograph of an extended object (like a long keyboard) from above and too close results in some curvature distortion: the keyboard will look curved and warped.  Better to take the photo from farther away, zoomed in, such that the focal length >> length of the object.  Example in the first image here.

I think most of you have better cameras than me.
I certainly don't.
I just have a m4/3 I got off of Craigslist for 160 bucks, and a 45mm lens, which isn't very good for taking pictures of keyboards.

Not to mention I'm in dire need of a tripod...

I wish, it's just the 18-55mm kit lens from the d3100.
I want a macro lens though, once I upgrade my camera I suppose  :p

that makes it more amazing then!
well done sir!

nice pic! very sharp. are you using macro lens?
Thank you :)

I wish, it's just the 18-55mm kit lens from the d3100.

I want a macro lens though, once I upgrade my camera I suppose  :p

I have a Nikon DSLR as well, and that 18-55mm lens is an excellent all-rounder!  I probably use it more than any of the other lenses I've accumulated.  I even bought a dedicated macro lens, but it's a bit fiddly to set it up, so I use the 18-55 for documenting projects and miscellaneous shots far more than I use the macro lens.

You should check out manual Nikon lenses.  Not sure about D3100 compatibility, but on mine I can use anything that has a Nikon mount, so all the old F-mount lenses work just fine.  You have to use the fully manual setting, which for me means a lot of test shots while I fiddle with aperture and exposure, but it's a lot of fun once it's dialed in correctly.  Just don't forget to set white balance using a sheet of paper or something, auto white balance doesn't work very well with older glass.

The best part is the price to play; old lenses go for pennies on eBay, I've gotten several for the price of shipping plus a dollar.  Pawn shops are eager to move old lenses out of their display cases, usually for ten bucks or so.  My local camera shop has a case of old camera lenses, and I've bought quite a few of the old Nikon Micro lenses from them - no one is interested in them since they think they're just for film cameras.

Although I'm not sure I did the dyesubs justice - I haven't even pulled them off the typewriter yet; they should look much better after soaking overnight in denture cleaner (Efferdent tabs works wonders on dirty PBT caps).

Yeah I got like a 10x zoom lens add on thing for my 18-55mm and it works pretty good. You just need stable hands and/or a tripod.

I guess people make their own, but I would need to buy a real camera first.  Instead I use either paper wrapped around a desk lamp, or this app on my iPad.  I'm guessing you have something better than my ghetto fabulous setup, though. :)
