I've been waiting for another source of clear switch tops. Interested!
According to the manufacturer, they are in Cherry profile, but I'll prefer to verify it myself when I get the samples.

....And the usual question, ISO?
It's a blank set so basically only a Enter-key is needed and some additional blanks.
Form filled, Is there any QC done on clear switch covers? I know there was an late last year but the covers were found to be to brittle and prone to breaking. There were actually two last year. The first one was apparently quite brittle but I never had any problems with the second round.
I'm not going to jump on this yet.
Shadovved have you considered this?

If people can get stuff for under $30 shipped anywhere in the world, a group buy at $40 base price is already a non starter especially if there is no certainty of quality.
If you're just doing nego now, can you help me ask how much a gigantic crap bag of random blank 1u keycaps will be? If I buy, say, 500 or 1000? As long as there's random or equal numbers of each profile that's ok. I am using labels on matrix layout, so I only need each row of blanks to be the same profile. I want lots of white ones at a cheap price because I want to dye them.
:blank: let me announce here in this IC that I am only looking to buy 1u, so anyone who wants to buy mods and multiwides only please speak up and we can make a deal!

So, essentially you are looking for blank alphas in white? New keyboard project? ;D
I'll help you check it out, basically you want multiple alpha kits but not mods?

How about I make my request more focused so easier to figure out when you're talking to the PRC makers.
1) To buy 100 1u keys of each row profile.
OR
2) To buy a crap bag of 500-1000 that has the different profiles fairly evenly distributed.
OR
3) To buy 4 sets of 104/108 keys. After which I'll just dye and sell the mods. So far everybody who has bought or received dyed keys from me has been satisfied.
Option 1 is most sought after by me.
Option 2 is what I hope will be offered at a very cheap price, so that my whole family can have fun dyeing.
Option 3 is what I suspect I will end up with if their machinery auto-sorts and packs.

Once mine get here, I can give info about the quality & more info about them.
Hopefully these don't break as easy as the ones ran before.
When are you planning to turn this into a GB?
Hopefully these don't break as easy as the ones ran before.
After my samples arrive, I'll be sending a few people who signed up in the IC, and since pwnnarwhal has got some as well, we can investigate the durability. When are you planning to turn this into a GB?
Soon? Probably March or so. The fulfillment doesnt take long, I guess.
I signed up for 1k Pieces so I'm hoping these are good indeed are we allowed to order more?

Awesome, just in time to build my upcoming Infinity board.

Orrrrrr. You can count them 1 by 1 to show people u don't give a **** and ur a boss?
Two things I am always looking for, cant wait to add some of these tops to some of my boards :thumb:Once mine come since I ordered directly, I can send you a few if you want to test them or since I know your other ones didn't work too well.
Do these clear switch covers allow opening a plate-mounted switch without desoldering it?
If so, I'm in.
Hi Shadovved, i'm interest a set but i would to know who made it ?
I got some clear top cover and try custom it with Black 59g, it's very good and smooth. Product from Gateron ( not Abostudio)
Filled out the form.
I am especially interested in the thick PBT sets.
I prefer the grey tones, because blank sets in black / white are readily available.
Also, I'd prefer 1tone sets. At these prices I'd prefer to buy two sets for mix 'n' match. This way people can choose between classic and symmectrical look ("`~" and "\|" keys).
Concerning ISO it would be great if each set contained an extra 1.25 key (as left shift) and 2 extra alphas.
People could use the enter keys from other sets. An Enter key in a different color would be a nice accent on a blank set I think :thumb:
When is this IC going to turn into a GB?
What is the purpose of the clear top? For the LED light to shine through the switch? That's purely an aesthetic mod, isn't it?Clear switch tops are purely for aesthetic
Definitely interested in a set of thick dark grey PBT blanks.
I'd consider picking up a set of white mods or even a full white set as long as they are pure white and not a beige or off-white.
When is this IC going to turn into a GB?
Would start the GB probably late Feb, would like the samples to arrive before I jump into GB.

Is the same date for both, the caps and the tops? Please excuse me if this has been explained before.

All the single colour options should be available seeing that interest is mainly in single colour sets.

Yeap, I'll run it together, if the interest for both is sufficient, if not, I'll run the one that is enough.
The clear tops is looking good, if that's what you are asking :))
Will it be $10 to ship the caps internationally?
Can we take part in the GB without participating in the IC?

I think so, they are always independent, however I do not see the point of not participating in the IC if you want to buy them.

Because I am not sure I want to buy them to be honest, so I don't want to twist the number by adding my command as I'm not sure it will be made.

Then there is no rush, just wait until the GB be offered and you could join then, if your mind has arrived at a harbor.

Awesome, I'm in for Dark Grey and White at $31/set for sure. Not sure if you need to update my form entry to reflect that.
Any word yet on whether the stepped caps lock is off centered stem or not?
And it is confirmed, stepped lock side stemmed, non-stepped lock centre stemmed. So quick. Thanks a bunch! :) I'm so in for this.
Any info on the texture on these?

Alright, I'll change your entry to 2 sets instead.
I'll put your colour choice as dark grey first since white has enough votes to survive anyway :))

Sorry random question. Will the mods include the two caps | and ~ in the mod color so we can have a symmetrical layout? Would that be possible to support? Thx...
Ya. That's what I was just thinking. I see in the spreadsheet that the price per set is $40, but in the thread it is $31. I am guessing the $31 number is more current?Sorry random question. Will the mods include the two caps | and ~ in the mod color so we can have a symmetrical layout? Would that be possible to support? Thx...
Probably will have it in both symmetrical layout and non-symmetrical layout, will need to ask the manufacturer to add extra caps.
But if the price goes down further, you guys probably can buy two sets and mix it according to your needs :thumb:

Cool. So do I understand correctly that if we get a bunch more orders we could potentially get additional reductions? This could be one of the best pbt options available right now. Based from the pictures, I'm almost certain this is made from the same factory as IMSTO keycaps.
So they should be cherry profile and the quality should be good too.

I'm hoping to get some blank black PBTs out of this. Have been struggling to find a set.Same here, I've been wanting to try out some cherry profile-like PBT blank black keys. Depending on how this goes I might jump on board for a set; the price is very attractive. I have posted a link to this group buy on a foreign forum to try and raise interest.

Eh, no. When the sample arrives then I can get some close-ups of my own.
Probably can compare with those from swill then.
If they are thick PBT in Cherry profile this was a sweet deal.

On behalf of MK, submitted form for max amount of switch covers...how many would help bring the pricing down another notch or two?
I think he is asking how many more he would need to bring the price down more. How many more need to be ordered for us to hit the next major price break? On behalf of MK, submitted form for max amount of switch covers...how many would help bring the pricing down another notch or two?
Would your actual order be higher than 1000? Since that's the max in the IC.

If the price for the covers gets down, this will be a deal everyone at GH should get. Either, if people want the clear covers for a current project, or they can keep them in stock just in case they need them in the future. I am waiting for a kit now, that I will not assembly until I get these clear covers.

Well not everyone wants to build keyboards themselves. Plus perhaps they don't like the clear look.

Yeah right, maybe the hundreds of DIY keyboard kits that have been sold at GH and now at MD have been all bought by the same dozen of crazy fellows that like to build their own boards.
Does anyone know the brand and quality of these clear switch tops? I've had an abostudio pop while pulling the keycap off the stem and the stem just came straight out of the
switch. Now that I'm using black stems, I noticed they aren't as tight as clear stems and I don't have the issue, but that is pretty disappointing. I've never had a Nixdorf switch
in hand, but I assume the demand for them is partially because the plastic quality is much better.

+1 for this question. I have read people reporting some brittle tops that can be easily break, and others that are made of ABS whose strength is higher.

I'm interested in both a blank whites and clear switch covers. Do they offer other colors, like red?
Heya, just wondering if the clear switch covers are of a transparent finish or like a matte like finish?
I saw the link and it looks exactly like the abostudio ones but I saw some gateron switches have tops like the old nixdorf switches.
Would it be the clear one then I assume?

Go ANSI :P
Seriously, trolls aside, I did it and I don't regret. You have so many keycaps choices now and it is not that hard to accommodate as I would have thought at first.

This is not GMK, this is thick pbt. You would probably need about a million sets to get a 31$ price point for a GMK set.Go ANSI

It does seem that with a lot of GB/IC (and I've only been here 5 minutes) the question of ISO is raised, there seems to be a demand for it and and it gets overlooked even on blank keys. Maybe switching standard is the way to go, but seems a shame. Hey Shadovved, how many sets are to be produced by GMK to achieve $31 a set?

I got confused, substitute "GMK" for "the company what makes thick plastic PBT keys" :thumb:

When are you gonna charge the accounts? The answer may be somewhere already, just to busy, as in lazy, to read the entire thread. :))
Ordered 300,will there be a cheaper price after a certain amount?
Yeah, just wondering, because I can buy 200 of these for the price of 100 that I got off of taobao.Ordered 300,will there be a cheaper price after a certain amount?
It could, but this price is from the projected numbers from the IC + around 20%.
If we exceed the number by really a lot, we could push it down slightly (it's in cents already)

I'll charge you guys around 1 week before the end date, so I can reduce the delay for the turnaround time. And this way you guys can have slightly more time to pay.
PBT Blanks still on?

I will define how many covers and switches I need to set the orders.
I've never changed a switch top. What should I expect? It is stupidly simple. You need a small flathead screwdriver, and a little bit of length to your fingernails, and thats it, as long as the switches are out of the board. If your board supports switch top removal, I do it by sticking the flathead and pushing out, and lifting up each side.
I've never changed a switch top. What should I expect?
I've been waiting for another source of clear switch tops. Interested!
Heard the abostudio ones have longevity issues, hopefully this one is more hardy.
Will post more pics when I get them!

They're total ****.
I've removed countless keycaps with no issues. Used Abostudios clear covers, and on a single board, 2 keys sheared clear from the top while removing a key. Both keys had to be desoldered/resoldered.
I was extremely careful in removing and was extremely slow in wiggling the keys off, didn't matter though.

I hope the ones I got from TB are quality, or at least better than those ones that break. Since these seem to be good ones though, I am excited for that.

They will be here within a day or two. They actually went from New Jersey, to New York, which is kind of weird. I hadn't bothered inquiring about the tracking info, but they shipped from China on the 7th, and I got the tracking number a day or two ago. I am happy I ordered before they all took a break.I hope the ones I got from TB are quality, or at least better than those ones that break. Just ordered 200 of these. Now for some boards to put them on. :D
When should the clear switch tops ship roughly?
Shadovved
Surprised to see so much has changed in the few days since I was last here.
Can I check with you the following:
1) what is the MOQ of the PBT sets?
2) how many more sets do we need to buy to reach MOQ? EG if it's just 10 sets I can try helping everyone by buying the lot
3) is it possible to buy the crap bags still even if PBT moq is not met? Eg I could buy that 1000 1u bag, and for what price then?
Not to be negative, but I'm wondering if there are any problems with these tops, as I've heard that they're not the best. Would anyone care to elaborate and/or correct me?
Thanks

Has anyone actually used these? The previous clear switch tops buys were abostudio products, these are different.
Shadovved, did you realize what you were getting yourself into when you signed up for this job?PBT caps will be at a later time
Over 40k switches ordered with 3 weeks still to go!
Plus all these covers and possibly PBT keycaps too!
I hope that sorting and shipping all these isn't gonna kill you.

Yeap, I dropped the PBT caps due to low interest, possible because a GB just ended.
And no, I doubt it'll kill me to sort some switches, it's gonna take more than that :))
I might take a little longer to sort all packages if the volume is overwhelming, but I'll ship as I go.

An update on the total quantity already ordered would be interesting.
Wait, so are the clear switch tops only compatible with Gateron switches? Or do they work for Cherry MX too? They work for both
Too bad Gateron does not make an equivalent of MX Clears.
Gentle reminder to those who filled up the IC form, you'll need to submit a form for the GB even if you submitted one for the IC.I submitted for the PBT caps and not the clear top. I'll wait for the dedicated GB.

I read in someone's review of the gateron switches that the switch top fits a little more snug on the bottom half that traditional cherry ones. Because of this I think it was mentioned that switch stickers are irrelevant. Is this also the case with these? This looks to be a different material that the stock gateron switches.
Edit: oh, one other question. What is the moq for the next price break?

They share the same molds, thus, their tolerances are the same.

Scale economy is the reference, a plastic molding company does not pay for redundant tooling.

OK. They have different logos on them, so I would have assumed different molds. My experience with the clear tops is that they definitely have a different fit, tighter and narrower clearance. I thought reading up on the mold sourcing might inform me about the different experience I'm having with them.
They share the same molds, thus, their tolerances are the same.
The different logo may be due to an insert in each cavity for part branding -a common practice in small parts injection-, or an entire different mold. The differences in tolerances may be related with part's contractions due to different material molded using the same tooling.
Wait. .... why am I buying things that I don't need !? ... Darn you GH!

Sorry, I'm not following. Do you actually know is they use the same mold or have the same tolerances? It's fine to speculate, as long as we're clear that we're speculating.

It is an educated guess, education learned over some years working in manufacturing.

Right, I've found that the clear tops have zero wobble as well (I previously commented in the thread you linked). I was just intrigued by Ideus's claim that both Gateron and Cherry share the same production molds despite the fit and tolerance differences I have experienced with the Gateron tops. Given his matter of fact tone in his response to swill, I thought he might have some further information.
I did encounter some minor issues with the fit of these tops, but nothing a little dremelling couldn't fix. Overall, I think they are really nice and am looking forward to hearing other's opinions one they receive them.
Will you ship the tops combined with Gateron switches if we ordered them?
If so, do we need to pay the shipping twice?

Has the MOQ been reached for this GB?
Has the MOQ been reached for this GB?
We have reached the MOQ, but not yet for the price for the GB, because the price in the GB is taken from numbers from the IC.
In for 140 to go with 70 blacks and 70 blues in the switch gb :thumb:
Now I just need stickers and springs and lube and a pcb and a case

but they're so purty~~~~~
unless I'm missing something here. Hwood has the entire switch for the same price?Well, the housings of stock gaterons are a milky clear/white, these are completely clear and made out of a somewhat different material.

makes more sense. Ty for the info haha. Just ordered some vintage blacks, so some clear tops might be nice, gotta open em up to switch the springs anyway right. The tops wouldn't affect the smoothness of the vintage blacks right?well, it would depend, but knowing the smoothness of the plastic in gateron switches, I'm sure these will be the same or similar smoothness
So the general consensus, why do people like these better than the abostudio ones?
So the general consensus, why do people like these better than the abostudio ones?
Consensus is one thing we are not very good at GH. Particularly, when most people have not tried Gateron switches yet. However, many have realized the current GB on Gaterons is a good chance to do it, resulting in more than 50,000 units already ordered; you can join, or let it pass. But, if you want to compare Gaterons with other switches there are a few other threads on that, already. If not, you could open a thread on it; this one is to inform about Cover's GB terms and conditions and to discuss them, so we try to keep it on topic.

This answer seems really off-topic.
To answer your question Karura, these ones are made of a better plastic that doesn't crack easily, so the switch covers are much stronger. There have also been reports that they fit the switch tighter, resulting in less side-to-side contact and thus stickers are not required.
I will begin invoicing this Friday, together with the Gateron switch GB.

Shadovved do you still need people to help you reach MOQ?
I need zero clear covers, but if you need someone to buy up to 1000 to meet MOQ I will consider helping as a Buyer/Seller of Last Resort.
Also a reminder, I want to get that 1000 blank bag and pay you in cash.
Final grouse: I dont like it when so many people pop up right after a GB is finished, and ask to buy. Am starting to figure that some people didnt forget; they deliberately forgot, so that they dont have to risk any cash if GB fails and organizer runs off. Maybe this whole thing about BSLR selling stuff to people at GB price is not such a good idea.

We have it the qty required for $0.16 per already YAY! I will probably round off the order to a nice number when the GB ends so it's easier for them too, so I'll definitely have a tiny bit of extras, just in case anything goes wrong.
And PM me regarding your PBT thingy again.
So I've received an invoice saying GClears, I'm thinking those are for the clear switches. I'm not sure if I've placed an order for this too.that's for the switch buy, yes
Sent a last minute change request. I hope it may get through.
Edit: Thank you for the quick answer. :thumb:
Responded to all the PMs
Just got my invoice. Shipping seems to be off. Have you cross referenced the gatorade switches GB aswell?

Any updates or time-line for this now? Ty!
can someone post a link to the "other thread"? sorry I have been away a while and am kinda lost.
GATERON HAS LANDED!My biggest question... does it rattle when you shake it?

P.S. Shadovved is OK and rumors of his demise from carrying everything up to his place on the fourth floor are greatly exaggerated.
P.P.S. There's more that still has to be unloaded from the car.
Goodness me, how many switches was that?
50000 at least?

Wait a moment did the keycaps come also? I could meet up this weekend and relieve you of that burden (and you could relieve me of some of my discretionary funds)
Is there any chance I could up my order of covers from 100 to 2-300?
Are there any switch tops left?
im missed it too. looking for some second-hand sales now..
Will switch top only orders go out after the gateron + switch top orders?

Bummed out that your Gateron clear caps aren't as, well, clear as abostudio caps? There's an inexpensive fix from the Plastic Modeling world. Oldpharts know it as 'Future'; a few years back it was rebranded as 'Pledge Floor Care with Future Shine'. What it is, is a liquid acrylic; dipping clear plastic parts in it (or airbrushing, or even handbrushing; the stuff self-levels) fills in tiny pits, scratches, and imperfections. The end result?Show Image(http://i.imgur.com/58GknBG.jpg)
The left side is stock, the right side dipped once and let dry for 30 minutes. You could do two dips, giving at least four hours cure time (depending on temp and humidity) if you need to. I haven't noticed any catching or binding of the plunger; if you're concerned, a quick swipe around the plunger opening with a cotton or foam swab dipped in isopropyl alcohol will strip the coating. Best of all, it's cheap - it sells for $6/Qt in the US, which is more than enough for thousands of switch covers (or plastic models; I've used less than 10% of a bottle I bought in 2003), but if you know anyone who regularly builds plastic models, odds are they already have some you couldmooch off of themborrow.

Is this the same stuff you use for floor cleaners?
Bummed out that your Gateron clear caps aren't as, well, clear as abostudio caps? There's an inexpensive fix from the Plastic Modeling world. Nice find, Orgell_Evaan! I will have to pick some up at Walmart (http://www.walmart.com/ip/Pledge-Floor-Care-27-fl-oz/15136693) and give it a try.
Pretty sure that isn't what you want! You want it to say 'With future shine', this logo:Show Image(https://coloradoleen.files.wordpress.com/2012/11/go_part2_002.jpg)
According to this site (http://www.swannysmodels.com/TheCompleteFuture.html), it is.It is the same thing.

I really like these clear tops. Besides looking good, its easier to install 2x3x4 LEDs w/ SIP sockets. I used to cut the LEDs just under the notches, so they wouldn't sit loose. This way, installing the LEDs was a PITA! With these abostudio tops, its possible to cut the LEDs above the notches without having it move when seated.
I think you made a typo ;DThese areStill got some available. Better PM me before it runs out.

No I didn't, shadovved ran a GB for Gateron switch tops, not abostudio, unless Freechemicals is posting about abostudio switch tops in the gateron switch tops threadI think you made a typo ;DThese areStill got some available. Better PM me before it runs out.

Oh.. I see, then I need some more.. My bad. I wonder how they will compare to the abostudio tops, then. They aren't as crystal clear as abostudio, but that can be fixed with the Pledge Future Shine. These are a lot better, as they are more flexible and fit better. The abostudio tops are more rigid and are prone to breaking a lot easier.
Still got some available. Better PM me before it runs out.
Still have some available.

How many? I would like 100
Is the tops compatible with Cherry MX? If so, has someone 110 of them? They are fully compatible w/ Cherry MX.

Thanks for your confirmation.
Any suggestion where to buy them now? Will be there another group buy?
Zealpc.net offers one for $0.5 It is quite much since it's only top, not whole switch.

I believe this needs to be here:

Left to right: AboStudio (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=46446.0) Clear tops (R2), Gateron clear switch covers, Standard Gateron tops
It is the whole switch....I don't think so, since it is offered as "Gateron Clear Switch Tops".
Thats the standard price for clear switch tops outside of GBsIf it is really only the top, the price is high since whole cherry MX switches costs the same (http://mechanicalkeyboards.com/shop/index.php?l=product_detail&p=653).
Same for Techkeys (http://techkeys.us/collections/accessories/products/clear-mx-switch-cover). It is the price we pay for being late to a groupbuy. It is the whole switch....I don't think so, since it is offered as "Gateron Clear Switch Tops".Thats the standard price for clear switch tops outside of GBsIf it is really only the top, the price is high since whole cherry MX switches costs the same (http://mechanicalkeyboards.com/shop/index.php?l=product_detail&p=653).
And you are comparing separate switch covers with bulk switches. Separate Cherry switches cost $1.50 (http://www.wasdkeyboards.com/index.php/products/keyboard-parts/cherry-mx-red-keyswitch-mx1a-l1nn-linear.html).I'm interested in 110 pack and there is not quantity discount for tops as is for switches. Who buys only one top?
Ehm ... I ordered and payed in february and lost track of this hole buy. Now I'm wondering: Will I ever receive my clear tops?
Any plans on another GB for clear switch tops?
