Keycap set question
« on: Fri, 20 August 2021, 12:08:11 »
I recently bought these keycaps https://kbdfans.com/products/dsa-ergo?variant=21329987141690 and was wondering why it came with an extra set of F and J, I have seen this in a few sets and thought it was because one set would have the bump and one wouldn't. But both of my F and J keys were flat with no bump so now I am confused at the real reason.

Maybe the 2nd F and J have deeper scoops?

That is possible I guess. I didn't compare them directly to each other. I will have to check that out. I just compared them enough to know neither had the "bump" can't remember the official term for that.

There are a few versions of these homing keys - some have bumps, dots or big dips in the top of the cap.  If they are the same there is no point having two sets...

Glad to know I am at least not crazy about the fact that I have two similar sets. But yeah when I get home I am going to check if there is a bigger dip on one of them.

I have few DSA sets, but from memory you (used to) get an F and J with no scoop at all (perhaps for alternative layouts, for which DSA profile is ideal, where F/J are not the homing keys), and an F/J with scoops.

Personally I prefer bars, but do tend to use the scoops if they are available.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

I also prefer bars, but after I got home and checked my keys the other two F and Js have really deep scoops and the two I put on to test my keyboard does not. So now I know to switch those two out for the scoops.
