Hello everyone, I'm xiamu. Today, I'm bringing you the keycaps - Laser.
The LASER310 computer was produced by VTech in Hong Kong in the 1980s. Like the ZX COLOR, it adopted the Z80A processor. I happened to see a blogger on a certain website restoring this old computer before. After watching it carefully, I was deeply touched and decided to turn this set of designs that I personally liked very much into keycaps that can be used nowadays.
LASER is also a series of retro computer-themed keycaps. In terms of the design concept, colors, and patterns, while paying tribute, I've also added my own understanding and expression, hoping to let you experience the aesthetic sense of that era.
This time, I've conceived and designed two color schemes with their own characteristics. One is the light-colored retro style. When I started to adjust the colors, I referred to the appearance of the original LASER310 and tried to add some of my own understanding of retro colors on the basis of the original version, striving to restore that classic color tone as much as possible.
The other dark-colored version is my attempt when exploring the diversity of retro collocation styles. I think that retro can be bright and fresh, or it can also be deep and somber. So I chose to present it with a pure dark color tone, which is also the effect I wanted.
Originally, the Laser, from the perspective of functionality, only had the alphabet area and some function keys on the keycaps, which obviously couldn't meet the current keyboard layouts. On the basis of paying tribute to the original version, some design style elements of that time should be added. So, let's add some novelty keycaps!
For the novelty keycaps, I wanted to break away from the previous design ideas. At this step, I remembered that the 1980s was an era of rapid development of electronic products. A large number of computer devices came with a large number of interfaces and function buttons. However, the learning cost was very high, and people often had to read thick instruction manuals to barely operate them. In that era, an annotation form of design emerged. To better facilitate users, it also became a classic product design element. I think that adding such patterns can make the design of LASER more abundant and integrated.
So I decided to continue the unified style of the main alphabet area, use this annotation word graphically, combine it with the style of LASER310, and add these novelty patterns.
In the color matching of keycaps, I think that color distinction and the construction of layers are very important. Retro main colors such as beige, brown, and gray are often soft and low-key. After adding some embellishments, they can form a visual extension with the main colors. This extension is not only reflected in the function keys and the alphabet area but can also enhance the sense of hierarchy and three-dimensionality between the keycaps and the whole keyboard. It takes both aesthetics and practicality into account, making the visual perception reach a better balance.
And it allows you to freely match the keycaps. Everyone can explore more unique personality and color matching combinations according to personal preferences and creativity, further highlighting your own style and making the keyboard, on the basis of meeting practical needs, become a symbol showing your unique taste. You can match them like this, and you're also welcome to try to match your own Laser.
