Title: [IC] TGR 910 PCBs and Plates
Post by: reconsiderit on Tue, 06 August 2019, 02:43:17
Replacement PCBs and Plates for the TGR 910

Interest Check form here:  https://forms.gle/6Z3CcviLrx89w52h7

I’m planning to run a small GB for TGR 910 PCBs and plates in a few weeks time. They should be compatible with all models of the 910 (OG, SE, CE, RE, etc…).

PCB designed by kacklappen23. QMK Firmware with support for the layouts in the diagram below. It supports all layouts found on the original 910 plate and PCB save for ISO and split shift. PCB also features horizontal and vertical relief cuts taken from the PCB design of OTD keyboards.

Plate is designed by me with the outline taken from the original 910 plate. Will edit for compatibility based on IC response before the GB.

PCBs will have an MOQ of 20 with a price break at 50. Production time will be around 1-2 months.

This could not have come at a better time. I just purchased a 910 in the aftermarket. Hoping to have some options in the future if the PCB craps out.

What are the chances for a brass plate? Also, as a PCB noob - are there certain benefits to having a 1.6 vs 1.2mm PCB thickness?

Would be in for a couple of each. Would also like to suggest both 6.25u and 7u support. And good ol' aluminum plates. A single fixed color is fine. Like red, or grey, or black.

I'd definitely love to pick up a couple PCBs. Got some plates coming in from Project Keyboard, but no PCBs to use with them, this would be perfect.

Just got into this hobby and would love to pick up a 910 PC version.
Thank you!

Just received my glorious TGR 910 in the mail... and it has a bum PCB. This now HAS to happen. If we're on the button for MOQ, just PM me.

Also another +1 for aluminum or brass options for plate.

Just put this up yesterday (I think) and interest looks good enough to start on the PCB side of things.

Though the PCB is a variant of one that has been produced and tested, I'll be ordering a sample before doing a production run to make sure that it works.

Also seems like there's some interest in Alu/Brass plates. I'm trying to keep the number of options down to get to a somewhat decent qty so that pricing is reasonable.

As a point of reference, PC plates will be $30-40 each at 10qty. Alu will most likely be a little more.

Edit: Right now, looking at the responses, I'm thinking of doing alu and poly plates with support for both 6.25 and 7u space with combo BS. PCB with in 1.2mm with a matte black soldermask.

Haven't even thought about a blocker LED, since the plan was to keep the PCB as clean as possible.

Would you guys be more interested in a RGB LED or in a solid color one?

I like to change my LED with the keysets I use so RGB preferred.
Other than that underglow might also be worth considering for people who have the difuser/acrylic case.

RGB LEDs under the PCB for sure. I thought the original PCBs had those too, no?

I'm fine with no LED in the blocker. I don't think people use that one anyway, or if they do not as many as the under LEDs.

From what I understand, the original Exent and 910 PCBs are interchangeable. (My 910 currently has a black Exent PCB.)

Not sure whether these will be.

These are made to the exact same dimensions to the original quadcube PS2AVR PCB that was shipped with the 910. Should work, but I would double check with someone who has gone the other way and thrown a 910 PCB into an extent.

Aiming at 35ish USD at 50qty. A little more at 30qty.

Going to get a quote with matte black silkscreen and some nice Hirose USB connectors and will report back with an estimated cost once I've crunched some numbers.

I'd rather an RGB LED for the blocker and could care less if there are any LEDs for the bottom for side glow. One downside to the normal 910 & exent PCBs is I can't turn off the underglow/side glow LEDs while having the blocker LED lit up.

Edit: Learning and catching up to the whole custom keyboard thing. BMC is just super buggy on mac computers, so I can't get my current 910 board to properly map.

Looking forward to being able to use QMK firmware on these new PCB boards. That stuff is lightyears ahead.

So was talking to ai03 yesterday and he mentioned USB height for 1.2mm PCBs. Since the USB cutout on the 910 is designed for 1.6mm PCB, using a 1.2mm PCB will not work as the USB connector will sit .4mm higher than needed.

In short, these will be done in 1.6mm.

From another standpoint, a DYI burger mount could lower the connector to the correct level.

So I pulled the 910 out yesterday and took a look at the USB port and it does look like there should be enough room for a 1.2mm PCB to fit. The main issue is the cable as the USB tunnel for the 910 is on the smaller side. The cable pictured is just a simple sleeved cable but anything larger would probably have fitment issues with 1.2

Last picture are calipers opened to 0.45mm. It's on the same focus plane as the USB port to give you guys an idea of how much room you'd be working with.

Good call. I took a look at the pcb and I think right now the Unikorn 1.2 pcb just sits right on top of the brass weight/bottom case with very little gap in between. Anything thicker than 1.2mm 1.6 mm you will probably run into risk of hitting against the bottom case.

EDIT: Sorry I didn't realize it was actually 1.6mm. Thanks Lightning for pointing out.

IIRC the TGR-910 PCB is called TGR-Unicorn v1.2 (with a C) and is 1.6mm, the standard thickness, so otanishock probably meant anything thicker than 1.6mm would have issues.

Is there a timeline for this? Just wondering when a GB would open.

Targeting late next week. Need to do some CAD work on the plate. Looks like most people want a universal plate.

Will also be doing either a brass option on top of Polycarb and maybe FR4.

GB should be open for two weeks or so and production will take about two months at most. Cutting anodizing out of the process saves a ton of time.

After looking at the new IC Form - does anyone know if the original 910 plate was considered uncoated or coated brass?

Actually is this compatible with the EXENT?

I understand the originals were identical between the two boards, but this seems to be missing the key on the top right and has a gap on the bottom row on the right. (Based on the renders on page 1).

Is it possible to support both boards? The EXENT community is badly in need of replacement PCBs.

According to this  https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=87213.msg2799758#msg2799758 (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=87213.msg2799758#msg2799758) post by quadcube, the original 910 and EXENT PCBs are the same “electrical and mechanical” design, but the same does not appear to be true of this replacement design.

If this could work as an Exent replacement as well, it would be an instant buy for me.

Are there details as to why it might (not) work?

At the moment, this has no compat for the key under the 910 blocker. Extent has a key there.

If you guys can confirm that the 910 PCB is the same (save for the corner blocker) I can ask the designer to add compat for it which is just another switch under where the 910 blocker is.

I recently got a 910 RE which came with an original 910 plate and a Exent PCB. I had no issues building it.

If you want to make it Exent-compatible, my instinct is that you have to rework the bottom row too. Right now you have blank space for the half u blocker to the left of the arrow cluster which Exent does not have.

This is probably right - from how I see it on the pic in the OP, the current state of the PCB accounts for a right-side 0.5u blocker, but not for an unblocked bottom row. So that'd have to change in addition to the top right corner key.

Dimension-wise, however, it does look like the EXENT PCB fits the 910, so the reverse might be applicable as well.

As an EXENT owner following this thread, that is definitely an issue that goes through my mind. For me personally that 0.5 U blocker is actually a bigger issue than the top right key. I think it would be easy to find something that visually replaces that corner, but finding/rigging something to visually replace the 0.5 U blocker a the bottom will take some work.

To me though all of that is just visual issues that I'm willing to work around. As long as the PCB fits in the case and plays nicely with most of the switch plate I'll be happy. And from what I can tell the TGR 910 PCB should meet those two criteria. I'll willing to buy one and see, at least.

I know this could be seen as a bit of a rude thread derail (apologies reconsiderit), but for the EXENT crowd, I feel I should mention that there is now a GB up for a re-run of EXENT PCBs by quadcube.

https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=102878.0

Should mean there is less of a need for sourcing odd spacers for us EXENT people, and less of a demand for adding complexity to a 910 specific board as is being discussed here.

(Again, sorry if this is out of line)

If its going to be reworked, I'll ask the designer to add the non-blocked bottom row compatibility. There's not a horrible much amount of complexity in there as there aren't any conflicting key positions between the two boards. If I've correctly looked things over, the PCB should be able to accommodate both the 910 bottom rows and all the extent bottom row options

Redid the plate this morning. Will be submitting for a quote tonight and should have the GB started soon. GB will be a month long.

Plate materials will be 1.5mm black anodized alu and 1.5mm polycarbonate. I may add brass but have to look at prices and MOQ from the factory. These will be cut with a 0.5mm radius so your fingers won't hurt once you've finished putting the board together.

Edit:

Realized that I never posted a pic of the PCB. I'm putting it together this week and throwing it into my 910 to make sure it fits.

Good observation - that seems like a mistake - it should be
- south-facing left shift and backspace
- north-facing enter

It all depends on the plate of course. Just saying that if left shift remains north facing in the PCB, it won't work with original plates which are all south facing.

Starting the GB this weekend or on Monday of next week. Gonna run for 3 or 4 weeks. Need to work out the exact numbers but PCBs will be 45ish. Plates will be offered in the universal layout; similar to the stock 910 plates, but without split space compat and without iso compat. Will have PC, black anodized aluminum, and coated brass plates available.

It should show DHL as the only option right now. Pricing for DHL starts at 40-45 dollars or so due to covid. 51 does sound a tad high. I'll see if I can get product dimensions put into the system to maybe bring it down a little.

I've gotten a few emails regarding USPS. I'll make it an option, but please know that these are untracked and I've had packages go missing on me. USPS First Class should put you around the $15-20 mark for a plate and PCB. Should be available tomorrow or Friday once I've sorted a couple things out.

I'm shipping these out from CA. I'm not sure why it's giving a couple people sky high shipping prices.

I'm not able to input package sizes into shopify so it goes off of weight. I've weighed the PCBs and plates prior to putting them into the website and they're fairly light. If you're getting high shipping prices, please shoot me an email at mill@switchplate.co and I'll see what I can do to sort it out.

There's a GB thread for it, but PCBs are done and shipped if your order did not contain plates. If it did, I made a mistake and they're being made again and should be done this month or next.
