I think I'm going to go ahead and order one to try out. At $40, I won't take a big hit if I don't like it. I find that the palm grip actually makes my fingers hurt when I hit high APM in starcraft and I feel like switching to a claw grip will help. We'll see!

I love that guy! GAH! I just switched to terran after a 5 month hiatus, but whenever I play zerg (still in the offline stages of the game - I don't want to go online until I can beat an insane AI every time) I feel like I want to go right back to speedling/bling/roaches... <3 Zerg

Saw that on slickdeals early but didn't pull the trigger until I read this thread.  Will be comparing the G9x with my Sidewinder X8.

What's the difference between the G9 (which I've had for quite some time) and the G9x?

I really like my g9 but the sensor is simply horrible for a low sensitivity fps player imo. I can't seem to find any good comparisons between the g9 and g9x sensors.

G9x has better quality laser. Browsing for reviews earlier today I read people raving about it for FPS, so I guess the low sens is better than the G9. The general consensus was this was a much better mouse than the G9.

Crap, now you've got me shopping for a new mouse even though I had no need to do so before.

That Roccat Kone Plus looks mighty tempting at this point in my research, too bad it seems to be sold in Europe only.

That's the only reason I bought it too haha...I have my brother's old Imperator but I just don't like the feel of it, I don't know what it is.

The Kone+ can be bought off armygroup.com.tw but it's around $100 before shipping.

At this point I'm thinking I'll just go ahead and buy the G9x, and sell my G9 (mainly because of how cheap that price is, I think its cheaper than I paid for the G9 to begin with). I should get at least something for it. Then I can go ahead and get something else.

That's what I'm hoping to do with my Mamba. It's got a squeaky wheel so I think if I sell it for ~$30 + shipping it'd be a fair price.

Interesting. $40.  I've always been tempted to move up to a better mouse.

I've been using a Microsoft Basic Optical Mouse, bought for around $10, for probable 6 years.  I'm assuming it's a very low dpi mouse probable 400 dpi.  I game heavily and havn't had any problems using it.  I have to wonder if I'd benefit from a higher dpi mouse.

I guess it's about the same question as gaming on a mechanical keyboard.  For the last 6 years I've used the $15 Dell L100 membrane keyboard just fine, until I discovered geekhack.

decisions, decisions.

A good mouse makes the same amount of difference as a good keyboard IMHO, and the choice can be just as hard.

I was on a gaming mouse long before I had mech boards.

I decided not to get it because I didn't want to wait on the rebate. Esp since I've added the sidewinder x 8 (always wanted to try one), the gigabyte 'ghost', and the cyborg R.A.T. 7 to what I'd like to have. I'm not used to having this many choices of things I think I'd like because when I got the G9 that I have it was pretty much the only choice at the time (I've never liked razer stuff). I think I'll be limiting myself to two tops.

@jnewkirk
You need to decide if you like claw-grip or palm-grip best (google if you don't know what that means), then buy something. Or buy something that's supposed to be good for both, like the roccat kone or cyborg R.A.T. 7. I'd also go to a local store to check the feel of stuff to see what you generally like as well, because while they may not have the exact ones you're looking at online; they should have something good enough for you to tell general trends.

I use a something between the finger-tip grip and palm. The mouse sometimes touches my palm, it is a small mouse though.  I very rarely move my arm while gaming, just my hand.

The mouse wheel is very hard to click.  I actually changed my scroll lock in scII to the ctrl button and I actually love it.  Took a moment to get used to but it has made me a much quicker player.

Why do you need scroll lock in SC II (do you move screens with the click drag)? Also how do you bind control groups?

I assigned ctrl to scroll lock so all I have to do now is hold control and move my mouse to zoom across the map.  It works much better for me than the wheel.  This config still allows you to bind control groups.  The controls are technically conflicting but it doesnt cancel anything out.

I got my G9x yesterday and I like the scroll wheel better than the one on my G500.  Have them side by side, two computers, and each one is nice in their own right.  Since I use the finger tip grip I figured the G9x would be better on my gaming computer.  Taking me a little bit to get used to it after years of MX510, MX518 and G5 usage, but it's growing on me.

I ended up going with the Roccat Kone. I bought it from Isreal, for $100 shipped. I'll post in the appropriate place about it when it gets here if people want me to.
