I bought two of these for $19.99 shipped from the same seller; the second one arrived today.  The first one must have come from a cleaners; it had 4-5 stickpins rattling around inside along with some dryer lint.  Haven't unpacked the second one yet.

great find!  this could be the answer to my mx1800 with dead keys on the top of the num pad.  Does anyone know how usable a brown switch with black springs would be?  I'm definitely using the brown stems for the tactile bump, but a stiffer brown might be fun.  Now I have to remember my ebay login... it's been a long time indeed.

Hmm... I was hoping the increased spring resistance from a black would mean more noticeable tactile bump with a brown stem.  From your post it appears the opposite is true.  I suppose what I really want is a cherry clear with it's native spring ;)  

Oh well, I'm happy with putting the brown stems and springs from my mx11800 on the mx11900 and having a Cherry labeled MX11800 with the track pad of the MX11900, or something like that. :D

Ok, mine arrived today very clean plus one free paper clip under the number pad.  I'm surprised by the smoothness of these switches.  I supposed the increased spring tension over browns makes them feel a bit "tighter", but the experience is far nicer than I had anticipated.  Plans for the combination and redistribution of these switches and browns from another board are now on hold while I spend a few more days using these blacks exclusively to make sure I utilize them to their full potential.  By the way, this board is QUIET!  After typing on a Model M, Northgate, a couple of NMB boards, and an MX11800 with cherry browns, I'm loving the silence and total lack of bottoming out.  I feel like my fingers are resting on the small of the back of a 21 year old Brazilian female gymnast.  Smooth yet firm, very responsive, but also quite comfortable.  More to follow in other threads...

Got mine today, had a staple in it which was annoying as crap but aside from that and some discolouration on the external casing it's pretty much new.  Nice deal, sure is a lot different than the alps and buckling spring kbs I'm used to.

I agree.  My boards are ALPS, Model M, NMB, and a very similar MX11800 with browns instead of blacks (my only other non-clicky board).  I'm still typing on this new Cherry and my opinion hasn't really changed in the last couple of days.  The thing just feels solid, the lack of a click / tactile bump really adds to the solid feeling of the keys.  I've decided that if I do indeed do a switch swap of brown stems onto this board, I'm sticking with the black springs to see if it makes the browns feel a bit more sturdy.  Thumbs up to chicagoliquidators on these boards at this price!

kohan: that looks to be a rubber dome if i understand KSI's web page correctly.  I'm assuming that's what they mean by "membrane switches"  it might be mechanical over membrane, but I doubt it.

By the way, this board is the best board I've purchased for the money.  I'm curious about the case and PCB layout in comparison to the 11800.  I opened my 11800 yesterday, and I'm convinced that PCB flex is the cause of the "unstable" feeling of that board compared to this one.  Cherry must have improved the mounting of the PCB or the snugness of the case when moving to the 11900.  I feel zero flex when typing on the 11900, which is so much more pleasant and predictable when entering any string of characters.

I agree with your statement.  Although I have not owned a 11900, keyboard flex is a huge determinant in how a brown cherry board will feel.  It may also be that the two boards have the same amount of flex, but given you are pressing on black cherry switches the amount of flex in the board is less important (higher forces required in general)

While technically true, in the strictest, most narrow definition, the keyboard can certainly have a major effect on how well you can apply those skilz- effectively improving your skilz.  I can type considerably faster (prolly ups me to almost 20 WPM =P) on my MX-8100 w/ browns than I can could on the cheap-ass rubber-dome keyboard that I sent to the place where bad keyboards go after being broken into many small pieces.

Once you're talking about actual outcomes, it becomes kind of meaningless whether it improves your skills or only allows you to apply them more effectively- the end result is that you're typing faster.

I wonder why the keycaps are all scratched up as if the seller used a brillo pad on them.  There are marks along the sides where they are exposed above the case.  Anyone else observe this?

Mine, too. Doesn't bother me. Hardly noticeable and probably better than if they haven't been cleaned.

I just took mine apart for the first time since it arrived and it was very clean inside as well... the only problem is that now after reassembling it, it won't sit level on the desk!!!  I've tried feet in and out, no help.  I suppose I'll have to remove all the screws again and make sure I don't over-tighten any before I get all 4 corners started.  Well, at least I finally have a complaint about this board!

My key caps are damn near new condition.  I finally did the switch swap tonight, and my mx11900 now has cherry brown stems with cherry black springs.  Very cool swap in my opinion...  just need to find a way to stiffen up this space bar.  The gray switch just doesn't fit in with the feel of the brown/black hybrids.

Another nooB question.   Where is the color guide for cherry switch mods??  For example, how does a cherry black  + cherry brown = cherry red??

I think I got lucky, but my board looks almost new.  Typing on it right now and I have to say that it takes a LOT of pressure for me to type with these Cherry black switches.   I keep missing the A and I now realize how wimpy my left pinky is.  

Layout on this board is REALLY nice and the touchpad works well too.  It doesn't replace my Logitech G9 by any means, but I could work with it if I had no other choice.  

The space bar on my unit has got to be the world's stiffest space bar.   My thumb is already tired from typing on it.   Now I know why people dislike typing on Cherry blacks.  

My keyboard is clean inside/out.   No dust bunnies, cheese nips or donut crumbs.  

Just a GREAT deal!!!   I should have picked up a few more of these!!

On a sidenote, this keyboard is almost the same size as the Model M Space Saving Mni.  Yet it includes a touchpad and a full numpad.   I still much prefer my Mini over this board.......

Okay, I'll bite.   So......

Cherry brown stem + cherry black spring (what's left over) = ???

So far I have tried black, brown, and blue.  

No red....no white and no other combinations.


What combinations are worth trying?   Red cherry??   So I'm guessing red cherry is a slightly stiffer brown?

A true MX Red is not stiffer than an MX Brown...
trievalot would be the best person to ask as he has boards with both reds and browns (though I bought both of them for him).
I just have an MX Red board on hand.
chao also has both, but I haven't seen him around lately.

Incidentally I also picked up one of the $15 boards, and the "u" was chattering pretty bad (which is what you call it when it repeats, aye?). I mailed them and mentioned it, saying not to worry about it since it was just 15 bucks so whatever. They're sending me an additional one. Decent folks.

Wait so Cherry Black + Cherry Blue - Cherry Red???

I'm so confused.......

Let me put it this way.   If I don't like the Cherry Blacks as it is now, what should I do??   I could swap in Browns  (just stem, just springs or both stems and springs)  

I need to find some Cherry Whites......

Cherry reds are linear like blacks.  Therefore, if you take a black switch and put the spring from a brown switch in the black switch, you have effectively made a Cherry red switch.

Cherry red: 45g. Linear
Cherry brown: 45g. Tactile, no click
Cherry black: 60g. Linear
Cherry blue: 55g. Tactile, click
Cherry clear: 60g.(?) Tactile, no click

I get it.......I think??  I'm a little slow....

So how did Ripster get a Cherry Red by combining a blue and black switch??  That's what's throwing me off.  

So a Cherry Red is a linear Cherry Brown.   The haze is starting to clear.   Interesting how everyone likes a different Cherry switch.   I'm really enjoying my Cherry Blue Filco, but that's the only board I've logged any real time on.

Ripster used a black stem and blue spring.  The blue and brown springs are the same; something else causes the difference in force between the blue and brown switches.
