The commentary about the color being too dark is not an argument that it is the same as black. It is to make the point that it will "appear black" in most lighting conditions, other than bright sunlight and studio lighting. This render pretty much confirms that thought.

Look at the earlier post that shows the samples in indirect sunlight; the brown looks black. Which, again, is fine if thats the look designers are going for.

Also, I am not suggesting it should be as light as DSA Coffee House or GMK Chocolatier, but something like RAL 8014 would be a more "practical" dark brown that actually "looks" dark brown in more lighting conditions.

Anyway, OP and several people seem to like the design, which is all that matters. 👍

Why take coffee as inspiration if the set turns out black and white in normal lighting

Either the renders are misleading or the colors you picked aren't very reminiscent of coffee or are too dark
I don't type outdoors, so it appears it's gonna look like gmk monochrome for me

Careful now, last time I compared it to Monochrome, I got almost laughed at.

This is exactly my point though. Nobody types with perfect lightning and as such, it's going to look black and white 99.99% of the time, no matter what the "real" color is, which is sad.

Personally I like the idea of a deep rich brown but looking at the renders provided it is very very hard to tell it is actually a brown. A shade or two lighter would be a major improvement in my opinion. However being a monochrome collector I wouldn't complain at the current design as I think it would match most of my collection very well

What if the alpha and accent colors were swapped around? I think it would make it more distinct of a set.

I think a lot of the color discrepancies come from inaccurate and/or not color-accurate monitors. To my eye on my monitors it is clearly a very dark brown.

I also think it's hard to account for lighting condition as there isn't an official definition of normal. For example, I only use my keyboards in brightly-lit office environments with LED lighting, or brightly-lit spaces with lots of natural sunlight. Others may use it in a basement with lamp light. Or with some combination of RGBW fancy lighting. Or even under fluorescent lights in an office? It's just too much to account for.

I choose to focus less on how "on theme" the set will appear in different lighting and instead focus on whether it will look good in a wide variety of lighting. For me, that answer is yes.

It's great that you will have the samples at the Seattle meetup so people can see them in person. It's a very rare opportunity for those lucky enough to attend.

I haven't weighed in on the color conversation since this is a personal project I feel strongly about and didn't want to respond emotionally. So, I've sat back, read the discussion, and taken it in as best I can.

The passion in the discussion is one of the best things about this community. Lively discussion is not only welcome, but necessary for the best possible result. I don't want this to come across as being snarky or sarcastic - I mean it. Thank you for the attention you've given the set, its colors, and everything else. I recently got a RAL color book and I am pretty impressed with the brownness of RAL 8019! It actually looks more black to me in direct sunlight. I got high expectations for this set now

Like some people in this thread, I do agree with sticking with the current color, and I do think coffee shows as a different color based on the lighting, which adds a unique taste to this set. Can't wait!

Hey man, I'm the render guy for the kits and I was curious about what that was for. I only see it in Zamb kits and very few complaints when it's missing. Could you fill me in?

The legend color for the alphas is the mod color - RAL8019

One thing I noticed - the black alphas kit doesn't provide an option for all black F-row keys. So it would only really work with a 65 or smaller. Not sure how much it is to add F1-4 and F9-12, just figured I'd point it out!

It is for dual 1u fn users. Since double fn in a kit isn't appealing, Hack or Hyper works well.

Really like the colours. I think the dark brown is perfect, like the main part of an americano, with the yellow accents looking like crema on top.
