I have been wanting to build something like this for a while now, but can anyone tell me why? I'm on the fence with that one.

Because your macbook has a ribbon cable connector missing from all other macbooks that you are dying to use?  =-D

I just think it's a cool thing, maybe because it would seem to define the word retro.
