I'm throwing my vote in for Columbus, OH, and would be happy to help organize. I already ran a mk meetup at the Idea Foundry last September
(pics:https://imgur.com/a/h0493 (https://imgur.com/a/h0493)), and plan to run another in March, so the venue is pretty well sorted. The cost of food/travel/lodging for Columbus is also more than reasonable compared to a lot of other major cities. Also, there's a brewery right next door to the Idea Foundry... which is a point not to be overlooked.

2017 had some really fantastic meet-ups that were very well attended and even sponsored with vendor donations. I think each of the following locations are easy to get to and have a large and active group that would love to host.
New York City
Philadelphia
Los Angeles
Washington DC
Raleigh/Durham
Atlanta
Charleston
Austin
Houston
Seattle
Chicago
Big airports and direct flights are nice but cost of hotel is high and rental cars and such are a factor. We have a large range of people from broke students all the way up. On the other hand, there have been some really great meets that were actually quite difficult to travel to as well - like Asheville, NC where we had no major airport, expensive hotels, long drives, and no real local support group... yet I think we all had a lot of fun and quite a few people made the journey out to the mountains.
I think there is a happy medium for finding a place that has a popular airport with reasonably priced flights and hotels... and just as important, something cool that people would love to go do before/after the meet in smaller groups. Heres some places that have a lot of extracurricular activities and an easy airport but aren't your major metropolitans
Charlotte
Denver
Albuquerque
New Orleans
Nashville
Probably the best flight deals are always to Las Vegas or Orlando... probably have some really easy "group event" options too but I dunno - from what I've found, most of us are the 'chill, craft beer, indie rock, black coffee' kinda crew. I'm fairly confident if we decided to meet in someplace obscure like Wyoming, Utah, or Kentucky.. people would still show up.
I think we'll probably be going Olympics style like last year where locals who are willing to host and make arrangements throw their hat in the ring and we make a vote at some point in the future. I love all these notes though and agree with you on all points.

This gets my +1 easily. Very central location, affordable, and plenty to do. :thumb:

If it's in Columbus we need to roadtrip again.
Another bonus of OH is we can probably get CPT to come out
If you guys are thinking of a central location, I recommend the geographic center of the contiguous United States. The closest town is Lebanon, Kansas, about 10 miles south of the Kansas-Nebraska border. I believe the closest major airport is in Kansas City, so could carpool from there or maybe Denver. The Amtrak also goes through Kansas and Nebraska.

Obviously I'm going to vote of the north east... Driving is SO much easier than flying. That being said, I could understand why people are into cbus.

The North East has "weather" though, so depending on the time of year, people flying in could get screwed. The mid-west should be more forgiving in terms of flights.

Considering that many people will be flying in from many different parts of the country, and potentially, the world. I want to put a recommendation for Las Vegas.
It's a major international airport hub which means cheap flights in and out. Everything you need in Vegas is within close proximity and typically only a $10 cab fare away. It's got world class dining and entertainment for all ages.
I'm not from vegas, but i think it's a convenient place to get more people together. I also don't know who would be able to host, but i can volunteer as an organizer of Vegas is chosen.

Unless you just like drinking, gambling, and sitting in theaters, there's not much to do in Las Vegas. I like the idea of exploring a city if I'm going to travel there for a convention.

Hoff - check out Frontier prices for places like Denver or Vegas. You'd be amazed how cheap you can get somewhere if you can fit what you need in a backpack instead of a suitcase or rollback

Whoa, definitely some cheap flights through Frontier to a few places this weekend (what popped up when I started my search), but looking at a random mid-July date to Denver/Vegas returned some $250+ flights, which is pretty standard if my memory serves. :-/ So that's less than promising. But once we nail down a date and location, I'll give it another shot to see what comes back. :thumb:

Yes, cheaper aeroplane , but How many females is Hoff bringing. ??
Yeah you just kinda have to keep your eye out for deals. I have flown to places for under $100 round trip on Frontier - but the key is you cant really bring much with you cause they charge for everything extra. Anyway, when the time comes i'll help dig around for flight stuff - the wife works for Frontier so i've got the insider info lol.
tp4 - if Hoff brings women, will you show up? :p
Okay, so a couple people have mentioned getting a poll up so we can get the process rolling sooner than later. What cities do we want on the list? I'll go through the thread tonight hopefully and compile a list of locations with hosts, but if anyone else has some free time and wants to help with this I'd appreciate it. :)
I'll throw a name in the hat for Houston or Austin. We have a great local community that spans both so I know we could come up with an appropriate venue. We have had several successful meetups over the past 6 months that have been extremely well organized.

We've talked a lot about place, but what about time? Do we know what dates we hope have it?

I would imagine 'summer' is a good estimate of timeframe.

minneapolis or columbus pls
For people throwing their hat in the ring for their city, please come up with proposals. Venue, costs if any, hotel costs/availability, parking, local entertainment, etc etc should all be thrown in. It's easy to say "we can do it here where I live" but the earnest money, so to speak, is figuring out the bare minimum of specifics. Especially since, if you make a proposal and its accepted, it's gonna be on you/your crew to put it together and help to make it a success.
With that, I love all the ideas coming out! Let's make 2018 a blast!
^ and to that point, I would hope that there is some previous experience in hosting a large scale event on your team. So far i know each of the host offers do (despite post count appearance), but i'm just mentioning that for others.

Last Keycon had like 50 people, if I remember right
Every year people throw out mid-western cities.. Indianapolis, Columbus, etc because they're centrally located and within driving distance to a ton of other large cities (Indy for example could pull drivers from Chicago, Detroit, Cincy, Columbus, St. Louis, Louisville and a even Nashville), there's inexpensive lodging, great food and beer, they're super accessible unlike crowded east coast cities that didn't grow out on farm land, and plenty to do if you look for it. But people inevitably shoot it down because airfare is a little more expensive due to no hubs, and honestly people don't want to take a trip to our neck of the woods. Such is life.
I definitely vote Columbus though. With Denver and Atlanta second and third if people want somewhere with a little more panache and a larger airport.
The NorCal meet was supposedly 100 people
Let's try to get it in the middle of the country so that it's easier and cheaper for people to attend :)
Atlanta
Venue - Computer Museum of America (http://www.computermuseumofamerica.com/) This is a very unique venue. There are many old computers on display. In the past there was an Apple One among other very rare old Apple computers.
Cost - At the moment unknown. Last time I had to only pay for the tables. That might change as this is not in conjunction with VCFSE, but they liked the traffic I brought to the venue, so I think that a cost that is not bank-breaking can be worked out.
Hotels and Accommodations - There are many hotels in the area. (https://imgur.com/47kittp) Some are within walking distance of the venue or a short car ride away.
Flights - Delta has nonstop direct flights from all around the country, as does Southwest (https://imgur.com/g3al5RY) and Frontier. There is no shortage of flights. The airport is quite far away from the venue but there are Train and Bus routes (https://imgur.com/jmE8YUR) that will take you right to the venue. I think most people flying in will (have to) rent a car, but if someone in your party is arriving early, the strangler can take the train to get to the area. https://imgur.com/COhlHN1
Other attractions- World of Coke, Georgia Aquarium, Zoo Atlanta, a lot of KBBQ restaurants 20 minutes away, CNN center, Stone Mountain, MLK Historic Site, Six Flags, High Museum of Art, Delta Flight Museum.
My previous experience- Organized the April 2017 Atlanta Meetup and had over 75 attend. I did the organization of that event myself and made many friends in the area. I think that with the friends I've gained, we should be easily able to accommodate any number of attendees.

I'll see you guys in Columbus in a month and change... I'm up for ATL or Austin as a backup. (maybe we should allow mulitchoice? Cause i would select all 4) :thumb:
I think that having multi choice spreads it out too far and gives a less accurate view of the vote. If more people want multivote I will add it as an option.

I think multi allows people that are willing to travel to more than one of those cities to give an accurate representation of where people want? Also allows for me to cast my vote toward something else that might be a B for me but definitely do not want to go to C.

I agree with this; for instance, I voted for Columbus but Philly is a whole 1 minute further from me as far as traveling goes. I’d definitely attend at either place, but had to make a choice when both are viable options for me.

How many people are to be expected? With more information about the event, we could offer more venues.

I would expect a number close to 100, but recent meetups ( NorCal, SoCal, Seattle, etc) show this number could go up to near 200.
More people need to vote for Texas (Austin)...

I like this post!
I LOVE KEYCOOOON!!!
New Orleans is a really really fun city that is pretty different than most I've been to so it would be fun to go there if a lot of people are going to actually fly out / road trip for the weekend! It has some really great food, culture, art and music! i haven't been down that way in a few years, but I could probably point people to some great bars and activities down there! It's probably in my top 3 favorite cities to experience. Also has an airport!
Denver would be cool! Airport, weed and hiking!? hell yea.
Idk what is in Albuquerque so no comment there except I'm always down for new places!
Nashville I'm not to keen on.. a lot of people seem to like it I guess but I usually find it preeeetty pretty boring. I'd rather do Gatlinburg or (cough cough) Knoxville! If people are coming to Tennessee. Gatlinburg would be cool to like... rent some cabins for the weekend.
I really liked the space / venue / organization last year! buuuut i think it would be cool to move locations every year for keycon! I can see there being yearly city meetups (like seattle and philly/dc) but i like that keycon bounces around so people in various places get a chance to come out without having to trek across the country every time! Also, if it's in the same area every year I would be less inclined to go. I like new places & faces. :) I understand you people wanting it close to home .. but I look at KeyCon as something I plan a little vacation for every year. If there are enough people in Boston to want it in Boston because it's where they live.. than y'all can just have a meetup. KEYCON IS A COMMITMENT. AND IT'S THE BEEEEST.
Either way! I do think we should get moving on the poll and stuff. The earlier we can set a date/location, the more affordable things are!
oh. also... I'd be down to help organize around here and in NOLA if people are into it! If I have a couple months, I can totally find a venue and stuff.
My company, a large NYC-based website creation company, would love to host KeyCon 2018. It would probably not be able to do so before July though, if we want to do it right.
We already have hosted many Meetups and the venue is really nice.
I can talk more about this in private.
Cheers,

There are already pretty large keyboard-related meetups organized in the West Coast, mainly Seattle Summer, Seattle Winter, as well as NorCal and SoCal meetups. There's also a Portland meetup every year.

Portland Keycon would be amazing just saying.
Excellent airport that's usually pretty cheap to fly to and easy to get to/from,
awesome food + drink scene that doesn't break the bank
Legal....herbs
Pretty affordable housing in town!
Badass public transit: no need to rent a car.

Okay so initially this was just a joke, but then jacobsmirror started looking into venue options in Pittsburgh and now he and att1cus have agreed to co-host the meetup in Pittsburgh if desired. So we'd have a slightly more population-central location for those driving in, and a killer combo of hosts for the event. I've never been to Pittsburgh, but I've heard great things about its recent revitalization efforts, so it seems like a great option.
My current thought is to go forward considering Pittsburgh as the final-round city, in place of a merged Columbus and Philadelphia, and have that go against Atlanta for one final round of voting. Does anyone have strong feelings against this? Discuss.

pls 2 b putting austin on the list also tia
Since Philly and Columbus are merging, i will put up a final vote for 7 days with Pittsburgh, Atlanta, and Austin. Dont think it would be fair to keep austin out of the vote since they are technically third place after the merger.
But you forgot to add Milwaukee! :P
Is there even the slightest murmur of the time of year?Like spring, summer, fall?
Anyone from the Boston metro/southern NH area want to carpool? I've got 2 free seats. 3 if you wanna squeeze 3 in the back.
Drive down the day before, drive back the day after.
I'm staying at my brother's, but you'd need a hotel or something I think.

I may or may not take you up on that. Its a 10 hour drive, so I'm certainly hesitant.
Is there a date or time frame established yet?

That's the next thing we vote on

It may be a vote, but not guaranteed. If the venue and organizer's time restrictions only allow one option, then that may be the one. Will have to wait and see what they come up with though, I know they're busy finding the perfect place. :)
ooph... this is gonna be rough, and I hope I can make it. PA meets means we have to show our best!

Really looking forward to this.
Is the actual location and date nailed down yet?
Regardless, I will be attending again.

I'm sooo stoked about KeyCon being in Pittsburgh, it's the city I've been born and raised in. I'm a Pitt alum and lived in the city itself for the past 5.5 years. I'll 100% be there, even though I'm moving to Dayton in two weeks - with that said I can check out venues in the next like, week and a half if needed.
I'm definitely interested in advising on areas of the city to check out (and places to avoid), venues, food, nightlife, and things like that. Let me know if you guys have any questions about anything!

Whoa! What the?? I had no idea about any of that, that's really neat. TIL. :)
I'm definitely in for Pittsburgh. Is there a carpool thread that usually gets started for these?
I'm in the Maryland/DC/Baltimore area, and I'm down for driving a carpool if we can get a group of people together.

We've had successful carpools happen for previous events. I'd suggest showing some interest in here as things progress to see if anybody would be interested in joining. There are plenty of people from that area, so I bet you can harangue some into a road trip!

Sounds like a good idea for a topic

Honestly, the week of is fine. But the sooner the better so we have an idea if we're approaching the max attendance at the venue. I'm pretty confident we'll be more than fine though.
I'm new to KeyCon this year - is there any fee to get in? I live a few hours away and it seems like a fun thing to do.
This sounds excellent. I'm going to try to come out for this!
Just booked my flight and hotel. Can't wait!
I decided to stay at the Ace itself. Anybody else staying there?

So 182 RSVP'd so far and this thread has over 21k views. I think this is going to be an epic turnout.I don't disagree, but... Does the view counter go up each time someone visits, or are those UNIQUE visits?
I think it's the former in terms of view count, so not unique views. So 182 RSVP'd so far and this thread has over 21k views. I think this is going to be an epic turnout.I don't disagree, but... Does the view counter go up each time someone visits, or are those UNIQUE visits?
It'd only take a little under 100 people to check the thread after every new reply (like I do) to get to that view count ;)
I'm still super stoked.
