How thick was round 1 case?

They were 3/16" thick.

I wonder if the poker case has the same elevated design as the race. Imsto, could you post a picture of the bottom of the aluminium poker case?
I'm afraid that the two case designs are not identical.

I don't really see a pink on that list you have. They are all too close to the blue scale, which makes them look more purple. Maybe it's just my screen :) .

Ordering before the deadline, so don't cut it short, please :p.

HMMMMMM This one or trebs?
Trebs V2 supports Pure and Poker, but have they relocated their equipment and resumed production yet?

Also for the record I don't personally consider these types of sales group buys if there are no discount tiers. The sample does look real nice though. Why only a 9 day window from today?

The R1 seems to be 3/16" thick with less beveled edges, whereas the R2 is 2/16" with more beveled edges.  I think the overall design is better, as it incorporates built in screw holes and additional support ledges for the pcb... also, this is a better price and with better anodizing.

If we can get some confirmation it fits the pure im in for one all day

The Pure will almost certainly fit as the pcb size, screws, usb connector and dip switch locations are identical from my observations, minus the one center screw on the Pure.

Post by: imsto on Tue, 04 September 2012, 11:24:14
there's support ledges in the middle, so there's no problem  if put a pure pcb in the casing

just keep the hole in the middle empty.

Yes, the Pure will definitely fit. You just won't be able to use the mount screw in the very center of the Pure PCB.

Yes, the Pure will definitely fit. You just won't be able to use the mount screw in the very center of the Pure PCB.

For extra support, you can probably use a piece of hard foam, rubber or plastic in the center attached with a shallow screw.

anyone else going blue prefer the blue pictured in the OP?
i'll go with whatever blue is happening right at the deadline but it seems like the blue on the chart is pretty ordinary and the pictured blue looks awesome
what are the chances of us going with the same blue as the case in the picture?

My sentiments as well. I love the blue in the pic and would be down for one. I was excited at a gun metal one as well but again not too fond of the colour chosen. Just my personal quirks I guess. ):

Imsto, could you kindly share with us which blue and silver paints were used for the cases shown? That would help us kinda imagine what the other colours would look like.

i just got one of those and would love a pink case.

Yes, the Pure will definitely fit. You just won't be able to use the mount screw in the very center of the Pure PCB.

With pokers seeming to be out of stock everywhere, I don't want to wait for another chance.  Pink 4003 is listed in the RAL chart as "heather violet".  It looks nice on my monitor (who knows what that means) and its definitely not hot pink.  I think I will go for it.

What makes me laugh is how many people said they'd "guaranteed order" one of these if they came up again and even pulled out of other aluminum case GBs because of the interest check for this one and now the price is way cheaper and look how few orders are in.

well for me i only found out about this not long ago, and at first i was just OVERWHELMED with the choice of color, maybe thats a factor? im sure lots of people want one but can't decide on a color!

either way there are a few of us that want pink, so if it comes down to it im willing to order 2 or 3 if everyone else who wants a pink one does as well to get over the 10 needed.

The poker case will be the same fit as the pure, the race is a bigger board.

they will be calculated together with the orders inside China
the red blue silver ones will be made 100% sure, the question is about the metal gun/ pink /purple etc. so  red/blue/silver are the basic color

That is a trade off from this redesign...while you have more PCB supports (more important for typing) the new case appears to be 1/16" thinner (less aesthetic to some).

If only 1 pink was special enough to count as 10 itself :( Guess I'll have to hope gunmetal made it for race case somehow. Looking forward to an update, hoping folks from outside of GeekHack have helped the numbers of these colours.

I think the 10 minimum is counting both trays, Halverson. They probably had to set a minimum of ten to be able to justify buying the color at all. Gun metal is two away from hitting ten, so I hope I am correct :)).

Anything that will fit a Poker PCB should fit the GH60 PCB.

Not necessarily implied by that statement alone, but yes, I agree. I really think it will be since the controller will be soldered on the top surface without the entire teensy it seems. Perhaps there will be some resistors or diodes which will interfere with something, I am still a bit worried.

I would probably get a silver or black one if I decided to.

I checked his taobao and they are indeed listed there. Don't know if he's selling already made samples but he's got race case listed at 699yuan ~ 110usd and poker one at 599yuan~95usd.  Not sure why we're paying significantly more in this so called 'group buy'...but whatever.

this is an international site, it's pretty much understated that dollars mean US dollars.

It will be $0 fee for you if you Pay For Goods or Service, but he (imsto) will be charged a fee.
So upon payment you should select Gift, so this fee is inflicted upon you instead.

then get off the GB as that's not what's going to happen. imsto sends his paypal info through PM and you pay as a gift to avoid paypals nasty seller fee's. this is how most GB's are performed on geekhack.

i've been part of a heap of GBs since i've been here and every single one have issued actual paypal invoices, dont see the issue with doing that?

anyway if thats the case and he can't be bothered to issue an actual invoice so we have a record that we are paying for a product we expect delivery on im just gonna cancel.

Actually, almost every professional forum's GB is based on trust, we believe imsto because he did same things many times already, and others as well, I would not bother myself if there is no such trust. imsto has good reputation as well. I never buy anything from him yet, this is my first time payment for GB from imsto but I sent it when I got PM. If you don't believe any, you will not able to participate GB here. Maybe not all, but at least most interesting GBs here. Good luck.

I feel ya.  I've had mixed results as far as invoicing goes.  Most people do it but a few don't.  I've participated in imsto's group buys before and felt slightly miffed about communication issues, but I got my products 100% okay every time and expect the same in this group buy.  I would say I have a similar experience across the board dealing with our vendors and GB-runners out of Asia on this site.  I've yet to be ripped off though.

Basically I'm saying that the seller here has a good reputation and has as far as we know up to now been trustworthy - the issue is standard of service.  Given the limited availability of this kind of product, it's something a lot of us are willing to put up with but I can understand not everyone feels that way.  I had a similar reaction to yours (as did other folks) in another group buy run by someone else on the site.
Title: Re: Aluminum alloy anodizing shell for poker and race round 2,start paying
Post by: Cindori on Sun, 07 October 2012, 17:28:23
The reason sellers prefer un-invoiced Gift payments is because it provides an easy way for the buyer to pay for paypal fees. If invoiced, and seller want you to pay the fee, you would have to add some 1.25% number of like 2 dollars 74 cents which just makes a headache when people count wrong or forget it.

That aside, I would like imsto to give an update considering it has been almost a month since the order phase ended...

So true.  Imsto has a good reputation on here hence when he run's a Group Buy we all adhere to his/her rules and regulations.  Because all Group Buy's on this forum is based solely upon "trust" you quickly find out who is worth that accolade.

Anyone failing to deliver on their Group Buy gets noticed and will be shunned in all possible future Group Buys, it's that simple.  All it takes is to "rip-off" one individual and that will quickly do the rounds through our PM service.  Even though there is NO current feedback system here on Geekhack, pm's still aren't filtered or monitored, hence ask around from others here before handing over your loose change.

Hey korne, it is easy to send PM to imsto for ask any possibility of extra order. Although I've sent personal e-mail to him and get answer at least 2 or 3 days later, sometimes a day only. It is easy way to communicate with him privately if you prefer to do it.

i don't think you have to send a gift payment.. i am pretty sure i didn't because i almost never do that (always pay 3.5% tax on goods/services, it's a paltry amount to insure yourself).
if you aren't willing to "gamble" with $100 for a poker case you will NEVER get a kmac. that's just how this stuff works. i hate to use the word gamble because it's not a gamble, but it seems like that is how you are seeing it.

And what does that have to do with imsto?

You brought up an issue from another group buy/vendor. How about responding to that? Better yet, stop mucking imsto's forum up with issues from other group buys and drop the subject.

bad day? :D
someone wrote
"please pack these properly when shipping them out!"
then someone wrote
"not sure how this was randomly brought up "
then i wrote
"probably because someone got a dented alu case in Fengs group buy"

and yeah I think it's relevant because
a. Not everyone knows if this is imstos first time shipping alu cases
b. It was a fact showing that alu cases can be damaged really easy by just missing a couple of square cm of bubblewrap

thats it... no, its not about imstos shipping policies, just a general advice/request... not really sure why you want to make a big deal about it... it's not like imsto's here to read it anyways :D

and btw, its not imstos forum :)

No, a great day, actually. But thanks for looking into my well being.

It was perpetuated by one person bringing up an issue from another group buy, and now you and others continue the trend of feeling the need to discuss it in a thread that has nothing to do with that other group buy/issue. It isn't relevant, regardless of how you want to justify it in your mind. imsto packages his shipments well, and trying to say 'well, someone else did this, so it's definitely relevant to imsto' is like saying 'well some people receive jacked up packages from Wal-Mart... so let's definitely put Target under the bus for Wal-Mart's actions'.... yea, doesn't make sense, does it?

Thanks for the correction - I meant thread.

If people are so afraid please don't shop online

No reason for anyone to worry then :)

don't worry about the package, I never get a feedback about anybroken keys or something.

I didn't think me expressing my feelings on receiving damaged packages (feelings that are shared by anyone I'd think) and asking imsto to pack them properly would result in someone generalizing it to a fear of online shopping. It is definitely not random and I did not buy a case from him in round 1 and would have no way of knowing that.

I'm sorry I'd have to disagree about how I mentioned it in 'a thread that has nothing to do with that other groupbuy/issue' because the seller might be different but the product being sold is very similar. Hence if one case could be damaged in the post, what is to stop the same from happening here? Only one thing and that is extra care being taken by the seller when packaging it. That's all I want.

I think there is a misconception here that I was implicitly attacking a seller's reputation and that is just not true. Both sellers, Feng and imsto are fantastic but **** happens and that's what I want to avoid as much as possible. I've bought tons of stuff from imsto and they were all great. Have I bought an aluminum case before? No. Do I want it to arrive safely after seeing a similar case albeit from a different seller be damaged? Hell yes. Did I think a simple, 'pack it well please!' would result in so much drama. Nope.

ha thanks guys, everything's going well   the CNC almost finished,  we'd thought it might be done in a month but one month is not enough for these casing.

Awesome! This is all I was looking for, a little reassurance from the man himself that these cases are gonna arrive safely! Thank you imsto.

Hooray! So we can see this case before Thanksgiving day, definately...! ha ha.
I have a question. Is there any possibilities that imsto could make race case like pure? You know, pure case has less height than normal case
so all the switches are exposed, I like that. So called "Nude" case... Of course it need plate, actually plate and case must be one set...
Any idea or... huh?

I think it does not matter since they are already being produced anyway...

But it would be nice if IMSTO could give a estimated time to shipping... if it was "CNC almost finished" 16th October then it should ship next week maybe?

I had made CNC case and plate myself a while ago, it really does take time.
If, IMSTO almost finish all the CNC work, he has to do SANDING and ANODIZING (Coloring) procedure... it takes time as well.
If all the color is plane and good finish, then he has to do PACKING and SENDING.
But... in my experience, sometimes I can get 100% satisfied product, but many time, I had to do RE-ANODIZING.
So, it will takes time, it is not easy job. I think that we all need little patient.
Personally, If I can get this from IMSTO before Thanksgiving day, we are all lucky. ;)

The OP stated the case would ship 3-6 weeks after 15th October. Which is now.

Now, he explained the estimate was wrong and the shipping is delayed. I think I speak for everyone when I say thats completely OK. All we care about is that things are proceeding as planned...

Waiting is fine honestly, but not knowing what is happening is not.
Now, imsto has been pretty good with updates, so dont get me wrong, im not complaining ^^

I GOT MINE. SO QUICK!!!! Thanks IMSTO....!!
It has nice quality but... small thing, has little scraches and melted point inside of case, it doesn't matter because when you put everything
together, almost you can't see this, however, 2 points are so near by top... I know what it is...
During the anodizing process, case must be hanging in the chemical, when you hang it, use sort of metal clip, and the process use high
voltage of current so point of clip which hold the case will be melted if you don't be careful... becasue I know this, I understand this.

But.. little sad because mine is not that PERFECT... it's ok though. Nice job, imsto. Thanks a lot.

Everything is OK except this is what I've mentioned at my last post.

This is not a scraches or bad spek. It is from CNC work mistake.

This is from Anodizing process. It is made by hanger clip. You can see each point is mented down.

This is same point but another degree shot. This kind of "Melted and non-coloured point" is at each inside of case.

Little sad... :(

I know, imsto. I'm not blaming you. I told you that I did this kind of work myself for my custom keyboard, so I know how much it is
difficult. Moreover, you did these cases, not only one. So it is very hard to control everything, every step and procedures. However,
you can ask and complaint to person or company who did this, so they can do it again if it is really their mistake.
Then you can have more perfect product and everybody will be more happy. Anyway, good job and many thanks, dude.

So, even if it does, who cares? Your PCB? The air between PCB and case wall? Your surface of choice where you put the keyboard?
Ever looked into a wheel case of a car? It's pretty ugly down there compared to the other surfaces of the car. Why is that? Because it doesn't need to be pretty. Noone fukking cares for parts which aren't visible to the viewer...

So the question would be: Why do you care?
stephenpark already stated that those marks can be a side effect of the production process.
Another question: When you buy new keycaps, do you also hope for no sprue marks?

TL;DR:  ::)

^^^ It's part of the process. Those are some of the best spots to hide these unavoidable deflects. I've seen anoidizers (****ty ones) weld the hooks onto the exterior/showing face and not give two bothers. The spots that this anodizer has chosen are pretty good if you ask me.
Title: Re: Aluminum alloy anodizing shell for poker and race round 2,finished,start package
Post by: WhiteFireDragon on Mon, 12 November 2012, 14:50:39
For those "scratch" marks, that's unavoidable. During anodizing, there will HAVE to be some part of the case that does not get etched to take up color because the connection wire has to make contact somewhere. One possible workaround is to hook the wire inside a screw hole. That screw hole won't take up the color, but the mandatory screw will cover it up anyways.

TL;DR:  ::)

do you even own a Race? You can see the inner part of the sides pretty easily when backlit. And yeah I would too care if there was "cnc mistakes" on the back of the case. If you don't then good for you... I agree it's probably impossible to achieve perfect quality, especially in this price range, but it's still a premium product and I will join h2oxide in his prayers for silver cases not having as obvious markings.

I really don't want be a part of thses arguments, but frankly, yes, I do care even inside or wherever any mistake.
My car? Car is different, is outdoor thing, there will be lots of dirt if you drive.
I and many others "collect" the rare keyboard part and "we" do care about inside and outside, it doesn't matter whether it's exposed or not. Becasue it must be my "PERFECT COLLECTION"
These "melted spot" is unavoidable? Yes, it is not avoidable but can be really "Minimized" if maker does care.
And you must not use "screw hole" for this because you can not put the bolt after anodizing.

I will SANDING and ANODIZING again my case, for me, important is the case itself.

No I don't. And I don't see how this correlates with my context.
All I did was mocking h2oxide for his wording. Especially the "ouch" angered me a little.

I fully understand that people want the best for their money and seek perfection as close as possible.
What I don't like is the ratio of complaining vs. complementing.
stephenpark had a healthy mix. h2oxide didn't. That's all.

Again, I fully understand your point on the case being as close to perfection as humanly possible.
I know how crazy someone can get for that drive to perfection. For some things I also have this "madness".
I also know many keyboard enthusiasts over at Korea take this drive very seriously.
But, in all respect, if you do so, take more money and ensure yourself getting a perfect case.
If you buy a Daewoo you also shouldn't expect the quality of a Porsche.
If you want the quality of a Porsche, get more money and buy one. Simple.

As for the car reference: I took a brandnew car into account. The cases are brandnew as well. If the cases are already in use for a couple of months signs of wear are inevitable.

!!! This is Porsche, man!
Do you know where I can buy ALUMINUM RACE CASE except imsto? Let me know, plz.
This case is ONLY alu-case for Race at this very moment. You compare Daewoo and Porsche, this case is as same as Porsche.
Do you wanna buy any ABS or Plastic case for over 180$???
Yes, I am keyboard enthusiasts but don't have that madness. I said to everyone that I know the process, and how this kind of thing
should happen, so I understand. Not complaining.
If I want complain any, I would like to send personal e-mail to imsto, not here.
I explain everything here because I know somebody else may have same thing, I want make sure that these things are understandable.

Ok, if nobody has same problem like me, then mine is real bad one and I'm so unlucky. In this case, I'll ask Imsto that I want change.
If I don't, I'm just an idiot.
But there should be many like mine, so I gave information and advice that these things are not big deal, just take it easy and enjoy.

However, the turth is, Imsto did a tremendous job. I would like to give thanks to him. That's it. No more argument.

P.S. There is no more Daewoo Motors in Korea. GM has bought it so now it is Chevrolet. ;)

I'm aware of that. I may worded my post too inaccurate, sry.
I meant, if you truly want it to be perfect, make it yourself. Designing the case in CAD (or whatever is required for a CNC maschine), find a place which CNCs for you, and let it get anodized. All done in specific instructions by you. This way I hardly believe you will get a imperfect case.
But moneywise it's another dimension ;)

But we just blabla around now. Back to topic!

Neat photos, assemble those badboys and take more pics!

My red Poker case is flawless. Absolute perfection. The blue case has a few scratches from the anodizing process on the left side interior wall, extending to the top of the case. You can just see them on top of the left wall in the photo below. Does not detract from the appeal of the case at all, for me.

Has anyone else noticed the seal of the anodizing process isn't quite finished -- meaning after anodizing and dyeing it, there's a step in which you have to seal the metal's pores for it to 'lock' it in properly and when not sealed properly if you look extremely closely you can see tiny little pores in the metal.

As for scratches or marks mines immaculate and looks very smooth/nice. Sorry to see that guys.

Title: Re: Aluminum alloy anodizing shell for poker and race round 2,finished,start package
Post by: h2oxide on Thu, 29 November 2012, 22:47:59
Nope. Properly sealed anodized aluminum closes off the pores, locks the dye in and further protects the material from corrosion, and absorbing; dirt, grime etc. I've just finished sealing it using the boiling water method and lightly rubbed in some WD40 to finish it off. Its now better than ever. Very happy with the finish.

Here's an extremely brief explanation; Googling it yields several results
http://www.ehow.com/info_8759480_sealing-methods-aluminum-anodizing.html

I personally boiled it for roughly 40-50 minutes on top of (I'm presuming) some previous sealing where it was manufactured.

Wow. Just wow. 15 minutes ago I recieved the case, and I just finished assembling it. KBT Race Silver case.

I have to say, the quality is amazing. The finish and color is just perfect. And the weight!! It feels like a block of silver. It makes the keyboard super solid, and it feels ALOT different typing on it. Almost like a new switch. Or a new keyboard.

The packaging was great. Would probably survive a drop from an airplane. And the accessories was neatly packaged in separate plastic bags. I even recieved two different sets of feet! One raised alu with rubber tip and one simply in rubber. They give you diferent kinds of elevation of the back of the keyboard. Superb! Every screw I also recieved more numbers of then needed!

I will be selling my white limited edition plastic case, so anyone interested in creating an unique look for their KBT Race, send a PM. You could recolor the case in any color you'd like. I'm thinking $20 or something, but unfortunately the shipping might be just as much if you are in the US...

I'm kicking myself for not ordering a Race case now. Of course, I didn't own a Race when this was ordered, but still. Someone sell me their aluminum Race case! Please?

:D

Same boat - didn't own a Poker when this was ordered! Is i3oiler the only one who got green?

I too am willing to go in on a 3rd group buy for a Race chassis.

I'm also willing to buy any usable Race chassis (any color, any flaw, so long as it is usable). Hey, you could get a nicer one in round 3. :)

Just too beautiful. The pink is gorgeous, and immaculate. Packing was amazing. The box took a beating but the yards of bubble wrap kept it very safe.
Will definitely be looking forward to round 3!

Poker cases won't, as they're a much smaller board.  The Race case, though, I'm not sure about.

And I need to start saving for round 3.  This Poker is in bad need of a hard shell.

Twould be imstos! Identical to my hot pink one, the most sexy race case. Imsto sells his things on taobao, so that's why they are on there.

Unless someone has his exact design and made some of their own. But they look identical, possibly the same photos.

On a side note, it's a little late, but did anyone have issues with the little rectangle rubber feet? The stickers on both came off completely wrong and I couldn't use them. Was wondering if anyone had spares, or knew where I could pick some up.

Yeah, Halverson. The same thing happened to me, but I caught it before they got too messed up and managed to save them enough to use them.
Having access to spares would be great just in case they need to be replaced.

I had the exact same problem. Went down to a nearby hardware shop that sells alot of 3M products but couldn't find a suitable one. Might have to cut a different type to fit the shape unless I can find the same one.

It's open in R3, but you can't get a green one from imsto anymore. Check this link (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=44619.0) for more info.
