USA Does Not Lose In World Cup!
« on: Sun, 13 June 2010, 02:28:50 »
You know how England always comes into World Cups with a lot of talk and then fails miserably? Well, yeah, that happens often. So I was chilling the other day and a friend said that England would be the team to watch. I died inside a little and laughed at him but he said something about the English side's coach being pretty beastly.

Fast forward a day and I was watching the match. After the 4th minute Gerrard goal, I was ready to really consider what my friend has said, but then:

Sorry England, another wasted World Cup. Get good next time.

I watched the game at a "British Pub."  You know, the ones in the US where they wear kilts?  Yeah.

Anyway, it was surprisingly packed for being the US and Texas, for that matter.  It was a good game, and I don't really like soccer.  I joked saying that the only reason Texans came to the bar to watch was because they were showing "Football."

I think Brazil will have a hard time beating any decent team this year if a country ranked 105th in the world managed to penetrate their defense.

Reasons why football should be called football and not soccer:

1) It is the oldest sport to call itself football
2) It is the most popular sport in the world to call itself football
3) It is called football in 98% of the world
4) They use their feet more than any other game called football

The reason is simply and surprisingly, the US leads the group C, UK comes
at second place.. this is absolutely remarkable, because US soccer was
not taken seriously initially.. here in europe.

The US reached the top 4 once in the 1960s. It's not like they're COMPLETELY new to the game. And they have a strong enough team to make the top 4 IMO. European and South American teams can learn a lot from how gentlemanly the US coach (and US players) behave.

I agree this US team are good sports, in their behaviour.  The world will still hate us no matter what though.  Its the lot of the US to be hated (often for no good reason) or envied (usually for good reason) in the world. They love to hate us. Hating us is the one thing that seems to reliably unite the rest of the world. If the US wins they'll call it "soccer imperialism" or something. Or blame it on steroids. God forbid Americans should ever get credit for hard work and discipline ;)

Scratch that, I meant 1930s*, not 1960s.

@wellington1869
The Algerian player Boughera summed it up nicely before their game. He said something like "This isn't a game between superstars. This is a game between patriots." I think the US have a lot to be hated for but their soccer team shouldn't be one of them.

Whether we are win or lose, in any case we have seen exciting soccer matches
and this is the essential point. One has voted for US, another for GHA, not that
I care, but i have waited until the end for an "headed" equalizing goal..

I'm an atheist but today, I'm praying for Germany. However, England do the job of losing well enough for me not to have to pray too hard for Germany to make them lose. Seriously. What makes a good team for me this their delivery:hype* ratio. Germany has a MASSIVE d:h ratio, about 4. England has a puny one; 0.3 at best. Brazil has a hefty amount of hype but an infinite amount of delivery by default. Italy, although I dislike them and they just got owned in 2010, have a d:h of > 1 because they have delivered. I'll give France an even 1 because when they had Zidane, they wrecked.

Last but not least, Ghana just achieved a d:h of 24.

*Disclaimer: all the d:h numbers I list are subjective and based on my opinions

Honestly, the only thing England has brought to the past few World Cups has been beautiful slow-mo shots of Rooney yelling after he failed to score over and over. I feel bad for Gerrard and Lampard because they deserve a better team.

That call was complete bull**** from the linesman, Lampard's goal should have been allowed, but the Germans erased all doubts with style (as opposed to letting the game end 2-1). Beautiful counter-attack work from Ozil.

I still am a firm believer that if a team deserves a win, they'll overcome all the odds (like, England beating Germany 3-2 even with that disallowed goal). However, referee blunders also affect players psychologically and the team morale and that's a factor nobody can anticipate or calculate.

I think it depends on the kind of blunder we're talking about and the style of tournament. If we're talking about a goal, then I'd have to disagree when we're talking about a sport in which goals are so hard to come by and so many games (especially at the elite level) end in ties. In a points based tournment, I could see a case for a better team being able to overcome the odds, but in an elimination tournment, luck can overpower skill because at this level of the game, the difference between the great teams and the average teams isn't overwhelming.

I still think that if it was Germany down 2-1 and they had a disallowed equalizer before the second half, they would still win the game because of how well they play.

Philly was rowdy when the Phillies won the world series a couple years back (it was CRAZY - people knocking over streetlamps, flipping over news trucks, etc.) but in general Philly sports fans don't touch a lot of international fans.

I'm still not convinced about Villa. He reminds me of Higuain. Doesn't do much but gets his name on the score sheet. That goal was all Iniesta. However, I won't say that being the right man at the right time (like Villa was) is based on luck. I admit that Villa has the skill and vision to place himself where it matters.

Still, he's overrated.

I'm probably more tense than the Germans and Spaniards that will actually be playing today. I'm also eventually going to have to move to Germany so that I can somewhat justify my fanatical support of their football team, but for now, I'll have to put up with the "ur not even german u noob y do u care so much!!!!" comments. Today is your day, Nationalmannschaft. If you win today, you will beat the Netherlands. If Spain wins today, the Netherlands will beat them.

Missed all of the tournament. Right now Germany vs Spain is on a side window and I haven't been interested yet.

Still, as a Dutch citizen I'm obliged to hope for a Netherlands vs Germany final. I wouldn't bother about it at all, but I'm giving a party next sunday, and I want people to have fun, instead of moping about losing (and Germans have an irritating tendency to win against the Netherlands, which is why my fellow Dutchmen want to play against them some more - we're masochists).

Edit: Oh. Spain won.

Hell, I watched the game even though I had no intention to. (If you can't beat them, join them)
It was a tense game. Still they held out until the second round of overtime with 10 minutes to go. The goal should not have been allowed because he was out, but hey.
If he were more strict quite a few more players should have gotten a yellow or red card.

He just wanted it over with.

If the referee had made his job, there wouldn't have been many Dutch left on the pitch in the first place.

It was an ugly match. The side that contributed less to the ugliness won. I'm fine with that.

And de Jong should have been dragged outside and shot behind the stadium. It's rather a miracle Alonso wasn't injured at all. A kick like that can be lethal.

Can a German help me out here. When I watch Bayern matches with German play-by-play (always more entertaining than English play-by-plays), I keep hearing an expression after a goal: "dreitze goal", or something that sounds like it. I tried putting the word "dreitze" through a German to English translator but it gave me nothing so I guess I'm hearing it wrong.
