GMK Abyssal

“Prepare yourself to face the endless darkness with me.”

Design Inspiration.

GMK Abyssal is a keycap set designed and revolving around Arknights Character; Skadi.
More
I decided to work with Skadi because I adore her character design and illustrations involving her as well as the story she has.
Skadi in the game is a 6-star operator, but if you know a bit about the game you probably know that she is pretty difficult to find  broad use for.

Skadi

Skadi is often portrayed as a very mysterious, careless and cold character, based on how she acts towards others, but once you get to know her you will learn that the reason she acts in this cold unfriendly way towards others really is that she is afraid of losing the ones she cares about.
More
On the battlefield Skadi is extremely efficient, and is often described as inhuman due to her seemingly never-ending stamina and extreme power. She wields a giant sword capable of ripping anyone to pieces, which has led to rumors that she is not 100% human as is also explained in archive file1.
“She will more often try to execute operations single-handedly and leave her teammates to clean up her mess, which has fostered resentment.  Playing off her cold, sarcastic demeanor toward others and her relentlessness in battle, a rumor has emerged that she is part-demon.”
She is often talked about in a way that revolves around the depths of the ocean.

“Down beneath the vast blue sea, below the white waves that lap endlessly at the earth, lies all that I once held dear.”

“I'll show you the dance of the depths.”

“Who knows what lurks within the kelp forest?”

“When you've made the long journey through the dark up to the water's surface”

The design process.

Starting out; choosing colors based on her character design is it's own thing but choosing the proper tones, and making sure everything works well together is another thing.
More
Initially just after starting out I had a good idea of what I wanted from this set based on Skadi’s character design .
For the Alphas i went with a light grey/silver color that matches Skadi's silver hair really well and gives the set a very distinctive look.
For the modifiers I originally started out with a lighter neutral grey but ended up using a dark almost black grey with a cold blue undertone.
A color that really stands out in Skadi’s character design is the blue on her clothing/hat. I decided to use A similar blue for the legends, which really makes the legends stand out on a rather muted grey set and really brings it to life.

Wondering why you chose hiragana for an Arknights character, a game made by a chinese company.

There are several mistakes in your base kit because you used the Dakota Felder files which have some known errors.

Known Issues/required changes include:
- "Capslock" term to "Caps Lock"
- 321 on numpad, order is backwards
- Numpad plus sign is wrong line thickness, should be consistent with other symbols on numpad
- "PrtSc" to "Print" (optional)
- "Num lock" and "Scroll lock" to "Num" and "Scroll" (optional)
- Numpad to just mono legends (optional)

I won't assume this, but I really hope you have purchased the Pantone chips you listed so that you know how they look in person. This part of the color matching process is super important. Some of your Pantones could probably be substituted for GMK stock colors to save you on the pricing for using so many custom colors in your base kit.

I believe your last render is from keyboard simulator as well. Which isn't necessarily bad, but isn't very good either.

Personally, I think this idea could have waited a couple days/weeks before going into IC. Please consider taking a little more time to run your idea past a few people and have them proofread your IC before posting in the future.

When someone posts an IC with a barely fixed Dakota Felder file.... That being said, I think your colors need a lot of tweaking, mainly because of the minimal value differences. I hope you were looking at the physical Pantones or had someone with the Pantone books help you while you decided on colors. The website for Pantone is not accurate to the physical swatches themselves, and if your monitor is uncalibrated, it's even less accurate. I see in your description that you want to purchase the plastic chips, but keep in mind that each chip is 20 USD and you have 5 colors. If you ended up needing to tweak all 5 colors because the physical color isn't to your liking, you may as well have just bought the Formula Guides. Have someone help you with choosing colors, and then update them. GLWIC

i did all of the renders myself, though i did start out with the dakota files which after i found out that they werent the right dimensions i swapped the keycaps out for actual cherry profile caps so the issues listed still remain since i still use the legends. ill fix all of the things you mentioned and im getting pantone chips very soon to look at colors in person

I'm not sure if the designer of SA Abyss set ever wanted to make a GMK version, but out of courtesy you might consider asking them about it. (It was sold at Keyboard Therapy).

Just for a smol update. I'm going to fix some of the legends that are incorrect, try doing some renderes without sub legends and see how how it looks without the purple  and the red since I got the impression that people think the colors are kind of a mess which I can totally understand and ive been considering myself as well.

Nice kit, I mean: dark alphas with dark mods.
But I can't find keys that should land in R3 next to the ISO Return key and in R4 next to the 1.25U Shift key.
Please consider adding some ISO support, for example: R3:Tilde/GraveAccent/ろ and R4:Pipe/Backslash/む  <- OK, this is exotic but would work nicely on 60% ISO.

The alternate alpha's are amazing, the blue seems to pop out of the black. Great color choice!

Thank you so much <3 I had a few forms up where Latin only alphas were an option but ended up not doing anything about it as sub legends had about 70% of the votes, I'll look into it again though as the set has come a long way so stay up to date for new forms or join the discord server if that's more your thing :)

Ty <3 I see a fair bit of interest in mono Latin alphas so I'll look into it again, I initially had a form where sub legends won with about 70% of votes but not sure what the interest is now so there will be new forms up fairly soon :)

Please consider putting mod tilde in the basekit.  Its used for split-backspce/tsangan layouts quite a bit for symmetry.

as it stands right now the vote for a TKL base kit far outweighs the one with numpad, so TKL base kit seems to be guaranteed which will make the base kit cheaper if thats the issue, but im afraid that if i make two base kits both of them probably arent guaranteed to hit moq. when i figure out vendors ill try to get their two cents on it and see if they think its a valid option  :thumb:

Based on how the forms i put up went, yea, but ill ask vendors if they think doing latin alphas will be a possibility.
Just for some closure, i would love to include latin alphas but the chance of them hitting moq would be super low and with dark alphas also being an option  having to include 3 different alternative alphas kits would be really difficult if all of them had to hit moq.

Ive considered it, and will consider it, but I do feel that it will be difficult to meet moq with 2 base kits.
For the hiragana I feel that it's appropriate as the global release of the game is 100% in Japanese so the version of the game most people know is in Japanese. I understand your point but I decided this because of the game content and not based on where the company is located. Thank you for your critique though

I'm not sure if anyone else thought of this but have you considered to add-on white mods to contrast with dark alphas?

Definitely a set that I will be purchasing if this goes live! I'd also prefer having a latin option if possible but you know it is what it is, I'm okay with both either way!

GLWIC and hope it becomes a success :)

thank you very much for the kind words <3
as for the lighter mod colors i hesitate to make this an option as it might not make moq as well as reversed alphas/mods generally being a less popular option. same thing goes for the latin only option.

As of march this year the GMK queue was 170 sets and their average completion rate was 2-4 sets a month. At the optimal 4 sets a month, this puts the wait at 3.5 years. But, hopefully they finally get the second production line running.

I'm fine with waiting a year. Tooling, color matching, samples, shipping, logistics, and other related preproduction is a several month process after all. But going beyond 1-1.5 years is quite literally the sales management team exceeding their current production capabilities. I'd rather just see more sets with other manufacturers at this point is all.

I guess, for me, GMK has just become the "Maybe when it hits extras and I still care in a couple years" manufacturer.

if this GB is a success ill definitely try to run it with other manufacturers. the main reason why i chose gmk initially was that i personally have good experiences with their products (keycaps) and because im confident in the color matching. if i could change it now i probably would, but i think that because this set has been in IC for a long time, most people expect it to run as GMK. but yea i totally agree, and i do think that gmk is stepping up actually, at least from what ive been able to gather, theyre outputting more sets than they have previously :) anyway thanks for the feedback!

Not at all. The only time that goes hand in hand is basically drop and maybe cannon keys. And they still are techy not the manus.
