It was just a small glimpse. Good pictures that better represent the color of the pcb inbound. Spoiler: it's purple.

Will make a video once I get them on hand next week. By design, the goal is to be the same or dampen even more as we're finding softer rubbers.

Other than the clear look and screw, is there something else special about the stabilizers? Why the screw?
Title: Re: Sneak Peek
Post by: Zeal on Thu, 04 August 2016, 13:57:29
Other than the clear look and screw, is there something else special about the stabilizers? Why the screw?

PCB mount stabilizers have been reported in the past for popping out in certain keyboards when fitted with tight keycaps. Having a screw secures the housing down so that doesn't happen. :)

In the past, vintage Cherry stabilizers had a screw that screwed into plastic; however, overtime the plastic would strip and the stabilizer wouldn't be usable anymore. My stabilizer is the solution for both issues.

Price will be announced at GB launch.
Silencing clips will be sold in quantities of 70x, 100x, 120x

Clear stabilizers will be sold as "one bundle"
8x 2u, 1x 6.25u, 1x 7u. This is enough for 1x winkey, 1x WKL 60%/TKL board; OR 1x full size/ Compact 1800 layout w/ 2x 2u thumb spaces.

The PCB already has 70+ RGB LEDs = over 210x "individual" LEDs. It's already approaching the maximum current allowed per USB 2.0 spec. USB 3.1/C needs to mature a bit more and stabilize before venturing into it.

will it support qmk, tmk, or easy avr?

TMK port. Future revisions of the firmware will include a fancier UI.

Any chance of a 2.75u stab as well to cover the VE.A keyboard's right spacebar? Though I would understand if the answer would be no since only 103 people participated on the Massdrop group buy so there probably won't be much demand to begin with.

Actually scratch that, I just looked at the build guide and they're all the same stabs, silly me.

Is there a difference between the two clips? It looks like one is clear and the other silver.

It's a frosted transparent cover. One is on a Zealio, the other on a Cherry switch to show my clips work on both switches. Due to the way I lit the picture with my camera flash, the white light scattered as it travelled through the silencing clips, making them look whiter than they should be.

Holy...
PCB with LEDs and silencers that work with a plate. Apart from a split spacebar you checked all the boxes on my wishlist. After 3 boards I thought: that's it, but now i think I see my dream ISO HHKB-ish-y keyboard on the horizon... (here (http://www.keyboard-layout-editor.com/#/gists/195b5833a13dfa3331c5d01b882968a4))
Also: would be awesome if the next PCB of yours could handle split spacebars (one can dream)

No, there are no plans to make Plate mounted stabilizers as of right now. Most "end game" / high end custom keyboards use PCB mount Cherry stabilizers only. The only issue at hand with PCB mount Cherry stabs were that they sometimes popped out, and screw in types would strip the plastic. My PCB stabilizer solves both issues present on PCB Cherry stabilizers.

Take my money! This will be my first 60% keyboard.

Any chance for a 1800 layout?  ;D

Nothing in the roadmap. If it does happen, would be next year. :P

Screw in stabs work with the standard holes for non-screw in so one can only presume so.

White/Black PCBs are a bit overdone...So it'll be purple for the time being. Will consider other colours in future revisions.

Your assumption is correct, and it'll be produced in a dark-ish purple colour.

Will be GB'd along with R4 Zealios, Zeal60 RGB PCB, silencing clips, etc, sometime this month.

How about under glow support for this PCB?

The Zeal60 RGB PCB is already approaching maximum current allowed per USB 2.0 spec. 70+ RGB LEDs = 210+ "individual" LEDs being lit up on a 60%. Until USB 3.1/C matures/stabilizes a bit more, this is the most that can be done for now. There are USB breakout pins for the user to mod and attach RGB LED strips if they so desire...But that's not recommended unless you know what you're doing. :P

Woah, the new Zealencios sound pretty good.  :thumb:

Personally I have to say that I'm more of a fan of the unsilenced more than the silenced. I dunno, with linears I think a lot of the appeal for me is the bottoming out sound. I'd probably use them on something like Blues or Aristotles to highlight the clicky sound more than the bottom out sound.

Either way I'm sure I'll pick some up.  :p

I need those stabilisers. Got a CPSQ in the works and it is getting a little bit of an ultimate everything board. I missed I think a massdrop for clear/gold stabs and kind or regret it as now that parts are starting to arrive for the CPSQ and gold springs and gold sip sockets look a little out of place next to black and blank steel stab wire. I assume the screw in is compatible with regular PCB cutouts for cherry stabs, will it fir in the chunky CPSQ plate/frame?

Is there a way to know when these are up so I don't miss them?

EDIT:

These take down the return top click that the switches make when you let off them, so together with orings this should really help bring down the sound a bit.

My screw in style stabilizers fit in regular PCB mount stab holes.

The silencing clips reduce both bottom out and up stroke noise, without giving users the mushy feeling with o-rings.

This is one my dream layouts also!! Hope is becomes possible:)

Maybe look into the 62/60, that may be more up your alley. Though, I still wouldn't skip out on Zeal's new stuff.

With iss being mia it sadly seems like the 62/60 is rather dead atm.

62 keyboad looks good and it has the arrow that I wanted.
However, I am not a fan of the winkeyless style keyboard. I am heavy window user and Windows is one of the most key I use. Plus, I dont have to buy extra for another winkeyless keycap.

Having tried QMX silencers only to find that they don't work with the combination Zealios+SA... Do these?
Also, the name is now official Zealencios.

I would also like to know this.

I don't have any SA caps to test, but would imagine that it would only be partially silenced due to SA keycaps lacking the cross on the stem. Only the upstroke would be silenced.

Is it possible to achieve this layout with your PCB, Zeal?

No, however if you're not a heavy right_shift user, you could do something like this:

It had nothing to do with the cross, the Zealios housing were thicker than the Gaterons, so when the QMX-thingies were on the SA caps became stuck when depressed. Works fine on gateron blues.

Sounds like you didn't have the QMX clip on properly. Zealio/Gateron housings share the same footprint, and are a slightly wider base than Cherry.

Regardless, the Zealencio clips fit on Zealios, Gateron and Cherry switches without issue.

I can somewhat confirm this. Cherry POM/GMK caps feel "sticky" when QMX clips are used, possibly due to greater wobbling in Zealios. This does not happen with Gateron caps because they have narrower stems.

Oh man.  I guess I better stop buying **** I don't need off the classifieds.  I was just thinking of building a new 60... Now I have a fantastic reason.  +1 for those stabs!  Thanks for all your hard work and dedication! R4 Black Bird and now a Zeal 60.  Now I just need to figure out how to cook the books for my wife... So I see a 8x 2u 1x 6.25u 1x 7u stab set listed for 50 - is there any chance of getting a 8x 2u 2x 6.25u for 50 as well? Don't have any 7u boards but would love to kit out all my boards in those sexy stabs.

Also, how does the PCB work? Are the RGB LEDs presoldered? I was looking for 4 pin holes but didn't see those.

Unfortunately due to MOQ reasons, 7u needs some more love and that's why the larger bundled option features 1x 6.25 and 1x 7u. For the GB stage, 8x 2u, 2x 6.25u will not be offered, sorry.

This is what I am most interested in as well. Will we be able to get a confirmation of results of tweaking (whether positive or not) before the group buy closes? I would order a ton of them if the wobble was addressed as this has so far been the no.1 reason for me not to use the switches anymore.

Most definitely. Would take a week or two before the moulds will be back in service.

Too bad the stabs ended up being that expensive. I totally understand why they had to be, but still...
I'll end up with one set of stabs and one set of zealencios to try out both. I'm fine with the 3 identical MX 60% boards I have right now, otherwise I'd end up buying more.

I should really branch out my keyboard game, there's so much out there! 65%... 75%... 84%...

These barely reduce the travel, and dampen upstroke and downstroke.

Ah darn - can I swap in a standard Cherry 6.25u wire into the stab mounts? Won't look as pretty, but a bit more economical I guess.

Also had another question I edited into my original post but you might have missed - how does the PCB work? Are the RGB LEDs presoldered? I was looking for 4 pin holes but didn't see those. If it's SMD LEDs, do the housings have to be the SMD compatible housings? Sorry if this is mentioned somewhere, just trying to wrap my head around this and couldn't figure it out from the picture.

Yes, my stabilizers should be compatible with any other PCB that uses PCB mounted Cherry stabs.

Yes, Zeal60 supports ANSI, ISO, HHKB, Winkey, Winkeyless, short_right shift, etc...

I really have to overthink this once again.

Try not to think of it as an o-ring that only dampens/mushes the bottom out. The whole rubber part is barely 1mm thick, so it won't affect travel as badly as O-rings. They're also doubleshot into the plastic to provide a firm but steady bottom out, so that adds to the cost (think of all the doubleshot keycaps...). These clips also silence upstroke, which o-rings don't do. Works with plates and PCB mounted keyboards as well. Nothing like it on the market.

Yes, it'll work if you swap wires. PCB has everything but switches pre-soldered. RGB LEDs are SMD on the back end, through a hole in the PCB. Doesn't need SMD compatible switches, unlike other PCB designs.

There's a bit of rubber in the Zealencio clip underneath that acts as a "stopper" and dampens the stem when it rebounds up.

I don't use SA caps nor know anyone around me that uses/has SA caps...so I can't comment on that.

Zealencios won't work with the Aristotle+Gateron / Zealiostotle mod due to the way the Aristotle stem protrudes out the top housing more than other MX compatible switches.

No, the Zeal60 uses surface mount RGB LEDs that are factory soldered. The 4-pin RGB LEDs I sell are for DIYers/people that want to make their own PCBs and give it a shot.

Will we have a white version of the PCB?

White/Black PCBs are a bit overdone...So it'll be purple for the time being. Will consider other colours in future revisions.

I would absolutely love to see a bright orange PCB and a toxic green (as long as it doesn't look like the mass produced hideous green color) PCB in the future! My VE.A will most likely be my endgame (just waiting on my clear stabs to get here to build it and then all I will be missing is the spacebar kit since Massdrop waited until the base set shipped out to drop the spacebars) that I would use on my main rig but I have 3 other rigs that need sexy keyboards and orange themed and/or toxic green themed keyboards would be sweet!

There aren't enough brightly or oddly colored custom PCBs on the market. It is usually either black, white, and (very rarely) blue; there are also the hideous pale green PCBs that look like the PCBs you find in cheap and/or mass produced electronics. Your purple PCB is the first purple PCB I have seen on the custom market lately, I feel like I have seen another light purple or lavender PCB but I can't remember where it was at, and I would love to see this open the door for more custom colored PCBs!
